This was a place we had driven past a couple of times, but haven't gotten a chance to try. We finally were able to give this place a shot and I'm so glad that we did. The food was excellent, the service was outstanding and overall, I had a very good experience here. The first impressions I received was that it seemed very old fashioned because the decor was almost like when you visit your grandmother. The service sort of negates this as the servers are vibrant, attentive and very enthusiastic and were very welcoming to us newcomers. She gave us very cut clear instructions on how their system worked and was always there to keep us happy. The food is absolutely outstanding. They have a Southern/Country cuisine that includes BBQ, fried seafood, and a large array of side dishes. Casey's does a great job with their selections as they are very diverse in what they're serving and gives plenty of options while not having so many options that you are overwhelmed with too many options as you may want to try everything. From the veggies, my favorites were the cabbage, rice and gravy and the boiled potatoes, but many other things such as the mac and cheese, sweet potatoes and fried okra were outstanding as well! One could get a whole plate of just vegetables and be satisfied! Their meat options have a lot of variety as well. There is pulled pork, fried whiting, fried shrimp, and baked spaghetti. For the really daring, there is chitlins (pork intestines) and pigs feet! There is also the option of them making you pork chops, fish filets and even chicken gizzards! We got some of each and they were all fabulous. They are also really known for their banana pudding, but I didn't get to try much of it because I was so full from the meats and vegetables! Long, long, long overdue on a review of Casey's. We have been here at least five or so times since moving to Wilmington in April. We liked it so much the first time that we have taken our guests there on a few occasions now. My husband says that the food and decor remind him of grandma's house and he can't be more right. It's such a cozy place with comforting food. Just great southern, country cooking. The pork is tender, the veggies are perfect and there is a great selection of main entrée items and sides. The service is outstanding! Casey's has some of the friendliest wait staff I've encountered. And what is a buffet without an awesome dessert bar! Try the banana pudding. :) We'll be back. This was the best darn BBQ I've had in a long time. Although there isn't a huge selection, like what you'd expect from a big chain buffet type place, everything you'd want when you think "BBQ" is there and it's all the best you're going to taste. Even the sides were phenomenal. If you're going here, just make sure you save some room on your plate for the Pulled Pork at the end of the buffet. It's easy to fill up on other things before getting to the end of the line for this treat, but it's absolutely worth it. And you can always go back and get the other stuff later :) The service was wonderful, and our waitress was really friends and sweet. She kept our drinks full, made polite conversation, and surprised us with some of their funny hats when we made a joke about them. Couldn't have had a better experience in that regard. The only reason I'm taking off a star is because of the layout. The buffet itself is wedged into a back corner which causes some congestions where a long line forms stretching through the dining room. A minor inconvenience, and the line moves quickly, but I really think there's a better way it could have been organized. Had an absolutely wonderful experience here. Staff was friendly and polite, great service. Food was divine! I wanted to keep eating but was too full. Loved the pulled pork, collards, fried okra, fried chicken, and hushpuppies in particular. Awesome variety on the buffet. The guys at a barbershop in downtown recommended the place, while I was getting a haircut. After a quick check on Yelp, I realized that the reviews are nothing short of spectacular. I found myself back in ole Wilmington North cac-uh-lakey this Memorial Day weekend (paying my respects military style) and I took the opportunity to grab a bite at Casey's buffet. It was only my second time dinning there, and I must say, the food did not disappoint. The setting it self left a little to be desired, however what the structure lacked the food MORE than compensated for. I was there with a party of ten and after a fifteen minute wait we were all belly up to the buffet. The food was hot, plentiful, AND EXACTLY what you would expect from a joint that labels itself barbecue and home cooking. The food ran the gamut from finger licking good fried chicken to catfish, shrimp and a pigs feet everyday. The desserts were also on point. Dinner started at 1620 (that's 4:20 pm for you indoctrinated) and I did not roll out until 1830 (you do the math). The prices are extremely reasonable 11.99 for adults and like 6.00 bucks for kiddos. If you find your self in Wilmington and get hit with a hankering for home cooking. Let you feet take you to Casey's and try some of the pigs feet. My husband and I are from Chicago, and we were taken to Casey's when we visited a friend in Wilmington, after my insistence that I wanted to try NC style BBQ. I detest "normal" BBQ sauce. That thick, gloppy, red, BLEGH. It's awful. I hate the taste, I hate the smell, I cannot stand it. After some google searches in the past, I had stumbled upon the concept of NC BBQ, and how it was supposedly different from the normal dark red sauce BBQ. I was intrigued, the idea of something spicy and vinegar based sounded possibly like the key to my enjoying BBQ. I was told without hesitation that Casey's was the way to go, so away we went. It was divey and difficult to sit at. The tables are wobbly and you can't push up on them to get yourself up because they'll tip right over. The chairs are sitting on torn up carpeting which makes it super hard to push in and out of your table without snagging and being unable to move. I ended up stuck a few times when trying to get up for the buffet, which resulted in our whole table needing to get up so that we could push chairs in and I could scoot out. It was inconvenient and definitely not a comfortable dining experience. That being said, we were there for the food, not comfortable chairs and chair stability. My husband got a whole plate full of meat and I tried NC style vinegar based BBQ for the first time, and it was okay. I didn't love it, it wasn't the mecca of all things BBQ, but it was better than red sauce. And in the interest of fair review, I'm a tough sell for anything BBQ and I will say the meat was tender, and everyone at the table was gorging themselves on it with moans of pleasure. I went to the buffet and stacked my plate high with my BBQ staples. Corn, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, gravy, and hush puppies. And this is where I will happily happily praise the food. WOW was my stuffing and gravy good. In fact the gravy itself was just like the nectar of the gods poured over my whole plate. I ended up back for seconds and thirds and got myself a tiny bowl just of the gravy so that I could continue to spoon it over everything. The corn was yummy and buttery, the potatoes were smooth and creamy, the stuffing oh my goodness the stuffing. Salty, buttery, perfect texture. Everything together was just a giant mess of yum. I ended up leaving the place stuffed almost to sickness, and I was sad that I didn't have more room for the plethora of desserts they offered. I'm giving Casey's three stars, for "Yay I'm a fan". I do so because what I ate was awesome, I can't judge the meat fully (which I am aware is strange for someone reviewing a BBQ place), but if you're someone who doesn't eat a lot of meet, or who tends to favor the side dishes at a BBQ place, then I don't think that Casey's will disappoint. If we had this place in Chicagoland I could see us coming frequently. It is a great mix for a couple where one person is a major meat eater who'd scarf down a whole pig in one sitting, and where one person tends to shy away from the animal dishes. There was a great mix to make us both happy, and both of us left satisfied with our food. I'm unable to give the place five stars because for real, the table/chair setup was a pain in the ass. I understand they aren't a super fancy restaurant, or even a middle end chain that has a ton of room. But seriously, I couldn't even move my chair because the carpet was ripped up and the tables would fall over. If this place ripped up their carpet and laid down some cheap hard flooring, or even just had a cement floor, it would make a huge difference for dining comfort. Being able to slide chairs easily in and out would get rid of probably half of my complaints. It was a bummer that the food was so good and yet I got to a point where I didn't want to go get more because it was such an inconvenient hassle to move around without knocking shit over and running into the person sitting next to me. That being said, I think you should try them out. Just keep that in mind, especially if you have mobility issues and thing that difficult up and down will be rough for you. read more

Maybe Wilmington's selection of country-style buffets is limited, or maybe my experience with them is just that vast, but I don't get the 4.5 star rating. Perhaps I'm, once again, just a victim of my own anticipation. Because it *does* have a 4.5 star rating after 12 reviews - and because there were already 13 cars in the parking lot just 4 minutes after opening for business this last Saturday - I entered Casey's with high expectations. Let me clear the air here so there's no confusion: the food wasn't bad, per se, it just wasn't up to the level I had hoped for. The barbecue, which is usually the highlight of my plate, was just ok. The hushpuppies, almost equally important, were overly dense & dry and lacking in any flavor. The sweet potato casserole was actually runny in texture. The mac-n-cheese was ok, about the same level as the pork. I was excited to see cheese biscuits but, like the puppies, these were too dense and dry (and also hard around the edges). Once you got to the little niblet of cheese in the middle, you couldn't even taste it because of how bland and bready the surrounding biscuit was. I was pleased, however, at the uniquely fried okra. It was pan-fried, without batter, in a method I'd not seen before. It was pretty good. The highlight, though, was probably the fried chicken. I think this was the best thing I had eaten off the buffet. I didn't try the fish, because I wasn't in the mood for it after my experiences thus far (and also because I'm not that crazy about fish fried whole). The desert bar was definitely the most enticing. I have been to Casey's many times, too many actually. Since I have been so many times you can see that this review wasn't made from just one bad experience. I have watched, or tasted the decline in quality with every visit over the last year. Tonight I visited Casey's, many months since my last visit, and it was wrong. The chicken tasted re-fried, everything was very processed, and way too salty. Even the deserts were dried out and just poorly executed. POOR QUALITY. The only thing that was even remotely enjoyable was the pork bbq. I fabricated some mini sandwiches with the slaw, pork and dinner roll and wished that I would have started & stayed with that program. It is sad to say that this is my last visit to Casy's. Like every thing else this year they too have raised their prices, It's not justifiable to continue to dine here for below mediocre food, especially since every time you dine there you take a week off your life span. We just completed a cross country trip from California to North Carolina. We looked up on line for a dive kind of place to eat in Wilmington and came across this place. Casey's turns out to be one of the highlights of our trip! When you walk in, someone from somewhere yells out for you to sit anywhere. Almost immediately a server showed up with a great smile and asked if we had eaten here before and explained how things worked and directed us to the Buffet. Man oh man what a spread! All kinds of great Southern food! Soul food I've never seen before! Thing's I've never eaten before! I loaded my plate and ate all of this gooey goodness. Then went back for more. After all of this, I went back for dessert. The dessert section looked like something you would see in a cruise ship. Everything in this buffet is fresh and hot. The flavors are insane! We ran across Wilimington Brewing by accident and while having a beer and nice conversation with the server, we were talked into abandoning our plans to track down Two Fat Women and instead go to Casey's for dinner. So here is a quick summary of what we sampled on this particular Sunday night. Chopped Eastern NC Barbecue - good pork, but a little over dressed, so a little on the salty side Fried Chicken - also good, but avoid the largish legs, which were dry. Thighs were very good Collards - slightly sweet. I'm still looking for unsweetened collards this trip Turnip Greens - Plenty of turnip flavor, I like collards better Mac 'n' Cheese - I really liked this baked, thick style. Slaw - very good, finally some I don't have to add vinegar to. Creamy, a little sweet, but also a little tart. Nice balance Blackeyed Peas - Very simple, seasoned with salt and that is all Fried Shrimp - although these are small popcorn shrimp, they had excellent flavor. Light coating does not cover anything up Seafood Cake - Kind of like bread dressing made with seafood in it and fried. How could that be bad? Okra - Sautéed fresh, not fried, not frozen. It was nicely done, not slimy. Ms T loved it. Fried Cabbage - Excellent, salted properly, tender. Peach Cobbler - very good Blackberry cobbler - also very good with a hint of cinnamon Banana Pudding - often bland, this was very good with plenty of real banana flavor We were really miserable when we finished. I guess it was the third plate that did it, followed by dessert. This is just a fraction of what was available. This place isn't clean inside which is bad enough, but when I was there a man brought his large German Shepard up to the food bar and allowed it to get really close to the bar and also this man's hands were all over his dog trying to keep it away from the food and then he was touching all of the spoons to the food. Real Southern BBQ. The buffet is huge! Got adventurous and tried pig feet, chitlins, and fatback. The best thing on the buffet was the sweet potatoes in the fried chicken! Hush puppies, the potatoes, stuffing, the coleslaw, the biscuits, and all the beans were all on point. The fish was flavorful too. We liked the seafood cakes also. And the best part was the dessert buffet section. All handcrafted desserts includes ice cream and pies. If you want homemade southern soul food cooking come here. First off - I do not frequent buffets. But if you must go, this is a good one. It's good food. They know how to fry. Very good southern food. Not a huge selection like Golden Corral, but what they have is quite good. I LOVED the whole fried fish. It's a delicious blend of spices with a touch of tart. The catfish is perfectly fried - crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. This was hands down my favorite item there. The fried crab in the shell was also excellent. Other favorites include okra, black eye peas, potatoes, mac+cheese, rolls, and cornbread. I tried pretty much everything and it was all good. The fried chicken was just standard fare. Pulled pork was a bit salty. There's a nice selection of desserts, but I only tried the bread pudding (just okay) and the chocolate chip cookie (tasted store bought, even though it wasn't). I ate here on 9/16/2016. This place is touted as a hometown favorite and my advice is to leave it to the locals. I went on a Friday night with 5 friends. We had to wait 30 minutes to get seated and while I understand it takes time to get a large table opened up we were taken to a nearly empty room. Having stood at the door for so long I can tell you not that many people left. The flow of the buffet is terrible. One has to stand in another long line to get to the food. Maybe it is due to the built up anticipation but the food was so-so at best. Like I said, there were 6 of us so it is safe to say we tried every item offered. For me the pulled pork was bland and the roast beef was dry. There was no one that raved about any menu item. Next time we are in town we will not be coming back. We'd been meaning to make it out to Casey's for a while, and we decided that tonight was the night. We were able to gorge ourselves on some good ol' southern cooking for under $11 per person. This is pretty much the same as what we eat when we meet up for NC family reunions. And it is gooooood. I tried a bunch of their dishes. BBQ (of course), fried chicken, mac and cheese, a cheese biscuit, hushpuppies, baked beans, brunswick stew (that was new to me), a couple of cookies, and banana pudding to top it all off. It was all really good, which is surprising for any type of buffet. What impressed me was that it all tasted fresh, not like it had been sitting in the bar for very long at all. They're good about topping everything off and keeping things coming. The price wasn't too bad for as much food as we had. The exterior and interior decor was casual, cozy, and friendly. Today we stopped at Casyes for the first time. The table seemed great that they have us, close to the buffet, but not too close. It's located in a Crampt area, and be sure to watch your step. They offer a $1 senior discount making the buffet 11.99. Not cheap. I'd go hungry. They highly recommended the mac and cheese, and it was good. Nothing was bad, lots of fried things, turkey and beef was really delish. And so was the peach cobbler. I'm torn on how many stars to give, not the same scale as some restaurants, but great for a really hungry crowd. The people were all really sweet. I think one challenge for me was the line of people standing by our table while we were talking. I felt like I was sitting on the Isle seat by the bathroom on a red eye from LA to NYC - ugh. The outside of this place is rather creepy. It's next to two stores that don't look like they've had business in years. Walking in isn't much better. Up front is okay, regular tables and chairs, but when you get to the back where the buffet is it's fold out table and crummy plastic chairs. Looked like a bingo hall. But looks don't always show the taste of the food. Sat down and went up for first round of food and got a nice plate of mac and cheese, green beans, a biscuit, fried chicken, and okra. The mac and cheese was phenomenal. Green beans, biscuit, and fried chicken were very good. The okra was a tad mushy, but still edible. Second round of food I got more mac and cheese, another biscuit, cole slaw, and BBQ. All the items on my plate vanished just as quick as they came. They were all so excellent I couldn't stop eating. Third plate was probably the worst plate. The food was still awesome, but it wasn't amazing as the rest. I got the chicken salad and potatoes. Chicken salad had too much mayo in it for my liking and the potatoes while good might have been on the line just a little too long. Lastly I got dessert, banana pudding and cherry cheesecake. I wish I got 2 banana puddings. The cheesecake was decent nothing great but the pudding was awesome. The carpet was stank and my six year old daughter told me she didn't feel comfortable eating there. I don't understand how they passed inspection in order to stay open.
