Went here on Sunday for the Mother's Day brunch. The service and atmosphere were great, and our server did a really good job, which is why I still left a $60 tip. Unfortunately, the food itself was disappointing. A lot of it tasted like it had been sitting out and then reheated, and most dishes came out only room temperature. Our bill was around $340 for me, my wife, and my 7-year-old son, so we were expecting a much better food experience for the price. I'm not sure if this was just because of the special Mother's Day brunch setup or if the food is normally like this, but based on this visit, I don't think we'll be coming back. read more

The location is stunning and the views are something. The restaurant is sitting above the Burbank mountainside with a great view of the city. Large parking lot out front but the spaces are very narrow. The food was okay. The calamari were ordered was nothing special, sadly it didn't satisfy my craving for it. The steaks were decent but I didn't even finish mine and heard that the salmon was a much better option. Service was lagging, sauces were forgotten, and our lunch took a lot longer than expected. The dessert tower was a fun variety of mini options but the presentation seemed rushed. Overall, the ambiance it's what makes this place special. I went to Castaway for brunch on a Saturday. It was very crowded. I highly recommend making reservations. For food we ordered Brussels sprout which they were so good. I highly recommend ordering them. We also ordered chicken and waffles. They have a variety selections of coffees and drinks. I am disappointed that I didn't see spiked milk on the menu anymore. It was so good. If you are into taking pictures and videos, this location is for you. The view of this restaurant is breathtaking. It is so picture worthy. read more

We were so excited to come eat here. We have not been in a few years and really looked forward to a beautiful dinner. The hostess is rude and even though we reserved a table for a birthday had us wait for a table for thirty minutes after our reservation. When we asked why , we were told that this is the way they manage the reservations. No apology . And truly made us feel unwelcome. Maybe because they have so many customers they have zero gratitude for good paying clients, and that is a shame! Such a bad attitude and the night started off backwards Finally we were taken to our table but then waited fifteen minutes an no waiter approached us . We actually had to ask a manager that was passing by to please help and she was kind enough to take our order. Food came out with no steak knives and we had to wait 10 minutes for forks and knives. Views are amazing but service is sub-par for this go around - not sure if this was because of the large amount of people there at this time. 1. Drinks were very slow to come out. 2. I ordered steak but the server told me that they were out of steak. This is crazy to me for a Saturday night when it is your busiest time of the week. I took up the salmon option but felt bad for my friends who did not eat fish. They ended up getting a plate of vegetables and one ended up only get a piece of corn bread with Cajun butter. I feel that whoever does the ordering for the products for the week either made an error with their count. I know Castaway has been around for a while so I hope this doesn't happen again to future guests. Parking - Valet Parking. During Summer/Winter - expect traffic coming up the hill during peak dinner hours. Enjoyed a lovely and romantic date at the bar at Castaway recently. Beautiful and romantic night views over the city. I don't drink much these days but the drink menu was substantial and the bartender was making some great drinks. Paid vacation was exactly what I needed to enjoy. I enjoyed bar menu as well, some delicious empanadas and flatbreads were had all while enjoying the beautiful views. Prior to this, I was here for a meeting event. Meeting space was big, in a private room with served plated food. I found the bar experience my favorite as the food was delicious, views were impressive and there was a variety of indoor and moody or outdoor and social setting options available. We've had amazing service here before, but she was on another level. Karen was warm, personable, and genuinely invested in making sure we had a great time. The sweetness and heat are perfectly balanced and honestly we could eat a full plate of these alone. The Caesar salad is always a must. Crisp, refreshing, and always executed consistently well. For entrees, we tried what has now become one of our top recommendations: The Wagyu picanha. Absolutely my favorite now. Incredibly tender, juicy, and bursting with deep flavor. Easily one of the best pieces of meat we've had here. If you love steak, don't skip this. And of course we had to order an all-time must-have: The lobster and truffle mashed potatoes. Every time we have them, we say the same thing, these should never leave the menu. Rich, creamy, and full of flavor. The price is reasonable for the quality of the food. The seafood was fresh! The pasta with mushroom & ricotta sauce was rich and creamy but it might be good to share or pair with a salad since it's a bit heavy. The view never disappoints but the service and food has take a dive. This was our 3rd or 4th time dining here and what a drastic difference from the first. The server was polite and courteous but it came off very disingenuous and forced. It seemed like an overcompensated effort to be professional and lacked the personal and/or human touch. Steaks were not as tender as the cuts are suppose to be, the NY strip was too dry and the wagyu picanha was way too chewy. To top it all off our to go containers were mixed up, one meal was completely missing and instead of the cornbread, which the waiter offered to get us a fresh one from the kitchen, we were given two basic random breadsticks that weren't even part of our order. If you need to celebrate a birthday I would say Castaway does it right! The view here is amazing and the tables are large enough for big parties. This was my first time here and it was for a birthday. At that time there were also three other large groups of people celebrating their friend's birthdays that night. It was a fun event and the food was delicious! I also like how they have a list of nice and delicious alcoholic drinks. The steak platter was amazing! We got it cooked perfectly!! *Delayed post from Dec '24. Came here for the first time to celebrate my anniversary after living in Burbank for almost a decade. The stunning views and atmosphere did not disappoint, but the food had a few misses . Our service was great and I appreciated their willingness to accommodate our request of moving to a table that was closer to the edge to see the sunset. We arrived at 4pm for an early dinner since the sun sets earlier in the winter time and were required to valet the car as expected. The front entrance had a koi pond and was decorated for the holidays. I chuckled at the bird chirp recording playing through the speakers. We were seated within 15 minutes and enjoyed drinks as we watched the sunset disappear over the mountains, then settled in for the meal next to a fire pit and heat lamps for warmth. The complimentary Spicy Jalapeno Corn Bread with Flaked Salt and Whipped Maple Butter was delicious and unexpected! We also really enjoyed the Crab Cake because the lumps of Shrimp gave it a satisfying chew and the crispy crust that was toasted, but not burnt. It was so soft, you could just spoon it straight up along with the lemon dijon sauce underneath. The Brussels Sprout Slaw on the side complimented the cake really well, with pieces of bacon and chives. The Smoked Tomato Salad had fresh Heirloom Tomatoes and the quinoa was surprisingly crispy, but in a good way. The winner for me was the Miso-Marinated Butterfish with Black Thai Rice and Grilled Broccolini, covered in a Sweet Chili Sauce. The fish was softer than butter, which I appreciated given that I don't like flaky fish like salmon, and it didn't have an intense fishy flavor that can be off putting either. The rice was extremely flavorful with a hint of sweet and spicy, probably from the Chili Sauce. I liked the char on the Broccolini, but it could have been blanched beforehand to avoid the toughness of the stems. The Wagyu had a crunchy sear on the outside with large chunks of pepper, but the inside was unpleasantly chewy. While I appreciated the free dessert we received for our anniversary, I was disappointed in the quality because they were super dry and overly sweet. If they hire a professional dessert chef, I think they'd have an even better experience to offer people who would come for drinks + dessert on a random weeknight. read more

Went recently for a 25th anniversary dinner with my wife (because our wedding reception was held at the banquet halls). We ordered the French onion bread appetizer to share. The wife ordered the salmon while I ordered the "steak progressive" (a selection of 4 different steaks that runs $140 (sides were extra). That was one of the worst $140 I've ever spent. I also ordered two sides: the asparagus and 50/50 mashed potatoes. The Food: I had a sense this was not going to go well when my server didn't even ask how I would like my steaks prepared. She just took my order and walked away. When the food arrived, not one of the steaks (filet mignon, hanger, zabuton [fancy name for denver], and ribeye) was even passably seasoned. They were all cooked to a medium rare, which was fine but wouldn't have been my preference for ALL of them, but they had no flavor and had a lot of char on them. And somehow they had managed to overcook the ribeye cap. ‍ The steaks were served on a stone slab with no ridges or guards to prevent juice from the steaks from running off it. Our table had a slight tilt to it and I was sitting on the downhill side of this stone slab. So, while desperately trying to locate the flavor in those steaks, I also had to worry about wearing a lapful of steak juice. The sides were actually pretty good. They were, unfortunately, the best part of the meal. Desserts, much like the meal, were underwhelming. The lava cake tasted like burnt cocoa powder and the cheesecake was just not good. Service / Ambiance: Having gone to this restaurant many times over the years, it was really surprising to see how densely packed they made the old fire pit patio. Now, there are tables everywhere and there is not a lot of room to maneuver - forcing people to squeeze between tables and other seated guests to reach many of the tables. Apparently, our table was next to the controls for the heat lamps in our area and staff were constantly squeezing between our table and the one next to us to reach behind a pole behind our table to turn on the heat lamps and adjust them as the sun set. On one of these trips, a staffer knocked over our bottle of water, spilling it across the table. He apologized profusely and promised to get us more water... and never did. Our waitress started the evening by mentioning that the waiter serving the table next to us was her trainer (I didn't really need to know that and didn't care, but she seemed nervous). When we placed our orders, the way food was handled was strange. Our appetizer came with a side of au jus and, before we could decide whether we wanted to do so, the waitress insisted on pouring it all over our sourdough bread and soaking it. When we ordered our entrees, the sides came out in a couple of minutes while the entrees took... a while. Once everything arrived, our waitress noted that we needed a spoon for our mashed potatoes, said she would get one, and... disappeared. We kept looking for her to flag her down so we could request a spoon, but it seemed like she took a break because she was nowhere to be seen for at least 20 minutes. We eventually caught the eye of her trainer and he got us the spoon. Meanwhile, the potatoes have been sitting uneaten before the entrees arrived, and couldn't be eaten after that without a spoon - getting cold the entire time. Throughout the meal, our waitress kept having to apologize for things - and started getting strangely handsy with me. She was touching my arm, my shoulder, etc. when she talked to us - which was kinda awkward. While I realize different people have different body language styles, touching guests and doing so knowing my wife was sitting right there, and that it was our anniversary, seemed a bit inappropriate. Conclusion: Poor / mediocre food and service with nice atmosphere. If you want food here, order apps or sides. They will be better than any entree you order. read more

We normally stop in for dinner during Christmas whenever we're not traveling. It's easy, don't worry have to clean up and it's always good. That's a win win. This visit, we had a reservation for an early dinner for a friend's birthday. Check in was a breeze. Also left a cake with the hostess for later. We got seated on the patio overlooking the golf course and valley. Perfect as sunset was approaching. Except, it was overcast that evening. Oh well, still a nice views. Majority of the tables were occupied already so we were seated towards the right side on the patio. It did fill up by the time our drinks arrived. Our waitress was the sweetest except I didn't get her name. She took very good care of us that evening. Menu wise, they had their classic items and a dinner special as well. Drink wise, everything you want as it was a full bar. Obviously a couple of drinks were had. I stuck to wine as the selection was quite nice. A few other cocktails were had in the party. Starting off, they alway being the cornbread with the spicy butter and sea salt. It's their signature dish before the meal comes out. Hot and fresh and so good. We also went with the large charcuterie platter with chef choice of meat and cheese and an order of the roasted Brussels sprouts. Meat and cheese, the selection was great. Perfect with the meat choices and fruits and nuts that accompanied them. Baguette was a good choice too which i prefer over crackers. The sprouts were cooked perfectly and topped with coconut I believe. It worked for that dish. Entrees, it was a mixture of everything. The crispy whole fried red snapper. Coconut orzo, arugula and corn salad and a roasted jalapeño line dressing which was the perfect touch for the fish. The filet was already prepared for you but still presented with the whole fish. The flavor and seasoning, highly recommend. Also had the special, the whole branzino. That was also filet on top of pomme fourchette, roasted compari tomatoes and fennel and arugula salad. Another meal that was worth it. Not sure if it's on the main menu. Then for the meats, the short ribs with triple whipped potatoes and ranch onion rings. Cooked perfectly and comes apart right on touch. The flavors were excellent. It's very rich and filling so you'll leave full. And lastly, the rib eye steak. Cooked to our liking and was great. Also had the macaroni and cheese and roasted honey glazed root vegetables side dishes. They were both good but between the two, the root vegetables take the win. Food was excellent and service was top notch. All the staff were amazing and very friendly. Our waitress, which I didn't get her name was the best. The sweetest, friendliest and made us feel welcomed and taken cared of. Didn't go for any of the dessert as we had a birthday cake. But did notice the massive dessert tower from the table next to us. Overall, it was another amazing dinner. The view was beautiful, heat lamps throughout the patio and service was great. This one is tough to write because Castaway has always been a staple in my family since the early 2000s. I've visited a few times within the last year for various occasions and each time the food fell flat. Our most recent visit was about a week ago. We ordered several dishes: 1. Ahi tuna appetizer. 2/5. Not that much flavor and the weird rice cake "chips" were an odd pairing. 2. Popcorn chicken. 1/5. Why did it come with actual popcorn? unnecessary and the popcorn tasted stale. The chicken's seasoning was underwhelming. Very theatrical, no pun intended, instead of just focusing on making the chicken juicy and crispy. 3. Sides: mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and creamed corn. These were all fine because you can't go wrong with buttery, creamy things. 4/5 4. Rib eye: 3/5. Wasn't that tender, lacked flavor. The extra sauces did not help. 5. Miso butterfish: 2.5/5. Very plain. black ink rice was too hard. Very plain dish, lacked flavor. 6. My mom ordered the salmon and they accidentally brought out the swordfish. My mom didn't mind and accepted the swordfish anyway and surprisingly, this mistake was the best outcome of the night. 4/5. Swordfish was very buttery and moist. 7. Child's smashburger. 3.5/5. It was an easy kid's burger, happy it was an option. Kid ate it. Not bad. The service was good and everyone was nice. Of course the ambience and views are phenomenal. If you are asking if it is worth it, you already know that you have heard the hype about Castaway...and yes, it's completely worth it. Tucked in the hills of Burbank with spectacular views of the valley, it is a local's favorite. You really need to book ahead of time as it gets packed during peak hours. If you have the chance, definitely see if you can grab a spot outside as it makes it an even better experience! That is not to say the inside is not great, but you do not get the entire experience. Onto the food, yes, it's not cheap, but I don't think many come here thinking it's a bang for your buck. The food is damn good, and the menu itself makes it easy to share with a small or large group of friends and or family. Simply lovely. Let's talk food. The brunch kicks off family-style, and every bite felt intentional and elevated. Bring your appetite -- or better yet, bring your family -- because it is a LOT of food, and I mean that. We splurged on the Hot Seafood Tower upgrade (highly recommend), which came piled high with melt-in-your-mouth lobster, scallops, crab, oysters, and giant shrimp. Be sure to ask for crackers and fish forks to enjoy it properly. The Shareables were also plentiful and creative -- fresh veggies and three layered hummus!! Delish. And the heirloom pesto tomato caprese bread was plentiful and oh so yummy and mini tea sandwiches were light yet flavorful, but the pistachio sticky bun? Still dreaming about it. The Spring Greens salad was crisp and bright -- the perfect garden pause before the real stars of the show: The Main Event. I went with the Nutella French Toast -- pure decadence. (I never order French toast but this has panko crust!) Thick-cut brioche, roasted golden apples, and a cinnamon-spiced maple syrup that should be bottled and sold. My husband had the Wild Mushroom Pappardelle, which was earthy, rich, and perfectly balanced with truffle whipped ricotta and crispy basil. Both were knockout dishes. Again huge portions. Now, the real tea: The wait was a little long -- about 30 minutes past our prime-time reservation, which wasn't ideal. But it was Easter, and they had over 1,000 reservations that day, so... understandable. What saved the day? Our server, Jonah. An absolute gem. Fun, full of personality, fast, attentive, and upbeat -- no small feat when managing that kind of crowd. He made the experience feel personal, even amidst the holiday rush. You can tell he takes his job seriously. And just when we thought we couldn't eat another bite... Sweet Endings. And let me tell you -- this is not just a dessert sampler. It's a whole other meal. We had to pack it to go because we were absolutely stuffed. A carousel of mini desserts -- from carrot cake to lemon cheesecake mousse to coconut macaroons -- graced the table with something for every taste. View is beautiful. Their food is just ok. Their service is all right. But very beautiful if you're just going for view.

I go to Castaway atleast twice a year and went for the second time earlier this month. I was so disappointed by the service. Our waitress was nice, but she was covering us in a different section and was overbooked. We didn't have a drink menu and had to ask for one, then we received the complimentary corn bread and butter and we realized we were given any silverware. Also, when I and left a previous review earlier this year, I had talked about the limited menu options and was told that in June of 2025, their menu was to be updated and it wasn't. The food was alright, it took a long time to come out, almost like they forgot about us. It was disappointing, but atleast the view was incredible. They have space heaters so if its a chilly night it keeps you warm which I appreciate. Parking is valet only as there isn't anywhere to park sicne it's located at the top of the hill. read more

We were contacted by Managment and we ended up going once again, our second time was perfect, my partner and I had a great time and they definitely made up for the horrible service! Went from a 1 to a 5 star review, the manager who helped us was extremely sweet. First off, I am here right now. The service is horrible. I see a big table getting service quickly but my boyfriend and I are waiting 30 minutes just for our server to come. And before that, we ordered with the manager so our waiter did not even take our order. He did nothing for us the entire night, the food was not very good, the steaks came out and we did not get a fork or knife for 5-10 minutes and I kept looking for someone, only until I got up to go ask someone about it they finally came. This is a 1/10 experience which is very sad because I came here for my graduation dinner. Extremely disappointed in the service, food, and how we were discarded. I came here to enjoy a date night, and instead I had to keep looking around for a server to help us. read more
