Love the decor of this hotel and the rooftop. The rooftop dining is a bit on the smaller side but has gorgeous views of the city nonetheless. Our service was very good. We did have a reservation for a Sunday night, which was fairly easy to get, and we didn't have to wait for our table at all. Order was taken right away and food came out very quickly. Everything on the menu was amazing. I highly recommend getting the hamachi ceviche, grilled octopus, black truffle mac & cheese, and the grilled branzino. The only thing that I had that I didn't love was the spicy vodka pizza. The undercarriage wasn't crispy so everything came right off the dough when you picked it up. I loved this little spot, and was so close to giving it five stars! Let's start with the good, the location inside the Proper Hotel on the rooftop with the views of Los Angeles cannot be beat. It was a warm day and we were able to sit on the patio outside, which was the end to a perfect vacation. We decided to go with apps and these did not disappoint. My favorite was the short rib tacos, followed by the margarita pizza, truffle mac , and broccolini. We topped it off with the Choco flan and split that dessert, which was a great call because we were stuffed! For the Choco flan, I recommend making sure you take every single layer along with a bite of the espresso ice cream together to give you the complete perfect bite. We appreciated the friendly server's recommendations, they were spot on! The only negative was the tables were slatted with big gaps, and we could see old food in the slats below that had not been cleaned out, and when the salsa spilled it actually almost spilled on my white skirt because there wasn't anything to catch the spillage towards the end of the table Parking was next-door and was paid parking only. The mushroom oyster tacos are awesome, my wife had the Grilled Branzino and I had the Porcini Rubbed steak. I just noticed I've never reviewed Cara Cara, despite having dined there a few times and having stayed at the Proper more times than that. It's the rooftop restaurant and bar at the DTLA Proper Hotel, a very stylish spot with killer north and west views, even with partial diminishment by a recently built residential high-rise. The hotel's cute pool is adjacent to Cara Cara, and hotel guests can order drinks (and maybe even food) poolside from the restaurant staff. Cara Cara has 2 levels, the lower level seems to be just for drinks. There's a DJ here some nights. Cara Cara initially was a small plates place overseen by famed chef Suzanne Goin, who also helmed Proper's then signature restaurant Caldo Verde on the ground floor. Suzanne is no longer, Caldo Verde is now named Cabrillo and serves breakfast only. Cara Cara's menu is revamped and includes larger plates on its varied menu. I ordered 2 spirit-free drinks, Passion Fire and Strawberry Lemonade, both appropriately fruity. I started with the Cara Cara Chopped Salad, which is now kind of Southwestern-ish with corn, jicama, avocado, tortilla strips, queso fresco and a tangy chili-shallot vinaigrette. Very tasty, quite different from the previous chopped salad I had here that had beets and sweet potatoes amongst its ingredients. My main choice was the Golden Hour Burger, quite substantial with cheese, lettuce, tomato and grilled onions. The house-made thousand island was flecked with red chiles, a bit too spicy for me. The herbed fries were great. Dessert was a Strawberry Churro Cheesecake Bar, a delicious short-in-height cheesecake atop a traditional graham cracker (I think) crust, topped with lime Chantilly cream, macerated strawberries and bunuelo (churro) crisps. Service was fine. My former regular server at Caldo Verde, Steven, saw me and it was nice to reconnect. Come for the view, stay for the food and drinks. The views at the rooftop hotel are terrific. The DTLA buildings, city's topography, the hotel's rooftop decor, setting, and pool beautifully come together. The cool breeze made this early evening in June delightful. The ambiance and scene is great for photos. I enjoyed the burrata and Calabrian personal pizza. The pizza was tangy, slightly sweet, and overall delicious. The pizza included fresh basil, tomato Ragu, burrata, and spiced honey. The table service is pretty good. A glass of red wine and the pizza was just perfect for a meal . I would like to return here to absorb the DTLA scenery and enjoy a drink/snack/light meal. read more

She is friendly, attentive and knows around the menu. Delivers up to standard hospitality, no pretentious attitude from receptionist either- nice! I hope they maintain their service quality. AMBIENCE I personally prefer the view in here over the Perch rooftop, it's not as spacious as Perch's rooftop, but the interior and decor are better- in my opinion. Curious to come back at night time for a cocktail or two with the view in DTLA! OVERALL I give this place a 5 star not because it's just a very nice place to sit down nicely- have a brunch or some drinks and admire the view. Both of the brunch spots in Beverly Hills Hotel are gonna cost 2x what you pay in here and you still get no city view, and also food quality and service sucks there. We came here for my sister's sweet 16, and the location was beautiful! The rooftop seating made our evening unforgettable, and the service was on point! The servers were kind to accommodate an additional party at the last minute. They also rearranged some of the heating fixtures to keep us warm. Much appreciated! The food was pretty good. Between a burger plate, meat tacos, shrimp tacos, and ceviche, we definitely were full! I'd like to add that the ambiance is very social and lively, making it the perfect venue for a group gathering or a catch-up with a girlfriend. There is no free parking, so plan for that. After arriving and checking into our room at Proper, we were so hungry and went straight to Cara Cara with no reservations. Looked super busy and was worried we would have a long wait but hostess was great and got us in right away. Outdoor rooftop patio with great views of downtown LA and vibes with a DJ spinning vinyl records. Julio came by and introduced himself as the manager and knew our names and even though I had mistaken him as a waiter he still took our orders and even let us order off the happy hour menu that we thought we had missed. The fish tacos and oyster mushroom tacos were absolutely amazing. The best part of the night was Julio and the hospitality and conversation he provided and he made the night even more special with an early bday toast and dessert. Between the stunning skyline backdrop, great service, and excellent food, it's a spot that delivers a memorable dining experience. We started with the cheese and charcuterie board to share. While it was enjoyable, I wish they offered a better cheese selection. The board could definitely benefit from a sharp cheese to round out the flavors. For my entrée, I had the porcini-rubbed steak, which was cooked to perfection. Tender, flavorful, and exactly as ordered. We also tried the spicy vodka pizza, which was decent but not particularly memorable compared to the other dishes. The cocktails were a standout. I especially enjoyed the chili cucumber gimlet and the reposado-based cocktail. Both were well-balanced, refreshing, and expertly crafted. One thing I really appreciated was their special Pride Month cocktail selection. A portion of the proceeds benefited a nonprofit organization supporting LGBTQ+ youth programs throughout Los Angeles, which made the experience feel even more meaningful. This is the first time I came to Cara Cara. The reservation was simple to make. The food was outstanding. Service so alright. I wish they gave us an entire bottle to refill my water. We got Steak 5/5 I love the steak so much. The chimichuri sauce and juice steak complemented each other. The steak wasn't overly spiced and I could taste the beef. Steak was so tender too. Branzino 5/5 the fish was crispy and soft. The branzino tasted so fresh, soft, and sweet. I enjoyed it a lot. Cara cara salad 5/5 was equally refreshing. The combination of these veggies, fruits, and avocado and cheese made it entertaining to eat. Fries 5/5 fries were crispy and my friends said she liked the fries the most haha. One of my friends celebrated her birthday at Cara Cara. She made reservations for midday on a Sunday, but when we arrived, the place was empty. We would have been okay without reservations for that day and time. By the time we were leaving, then the place started filling up. We were seated next to the pool area, which was nice. Everything was beautiful with great views of Downtown L.A.'s skyline. They have outdoor heaters in case it's chilly out and you still want to sit outside. Service here is fantastic, and our waitress was there to help us with anything we needed. Their menu is small, but it has a variety of options to choose from. I ordered their halibut fish tacos, which were battered with tempura, topped with red cabbage, pineapple adobo, and avocado salsa verde. I thought the tacos were good, but I don't think that the price matched the quality of the food. To go along with my meal, I ordered a Passionfruit Freedom cocktail that is made with mezcal. It was a little strong but delicious. We had a great time celebrating my friend's birthday. She received a complimentary dessert for her birthday, which was a nice touch. I've given a week and a half to let my thought settle before this review. I'm torn as my only negative is our server. No rooftop view or wonderful food can change the way you are made to feel. I knew it wasn't just us when a nearby table made a comment "good luck" when trying to get our server, Tony, to come back to finish placing our order and another table with a similar comment when we needed a pen from our server who seemingly avoided for 15+ min after our check was tossed on our table with no thanks or any words. Sad, because the food here.. 5 STARS!!! Hands down some of the best food! Other staff also... 5 STARS!! So welcoming and friendly like the entire hotel staff being guests at the hotel. Our server Tony was 2 stars as he started off ok but ran away mid order thinking it was the loud music and did get drinks delivered very quickly. When he returned with drinks my son was able to finish his menu order that was missed. Tony did explain the small kitchen and items would arrive at different times.. all good and things came out quicker and in sync more than expected. Allergies were noted and accommodated so that was appreciated. After food was delivered and we had time to enjoy our meal, the manager (I presume) was welcoming and interested in asking how we enjoyed our meal. It was all wonderful and told him so.. once he left however, it was as though we didn't exist or were of little importance. Tony came back and tossed the check on the table and turned away quickly, never stopping to see if we actually needed anything else. Had to get his attention to order dessert. My son ordered the strawberry cheesecake bar and I ordered an espresso martini.. this wasn't on the menu and I would NOT recommend an espresso martini. One of my favorite drinks I've had from MANY places. This one was all VERY strong espresso. It looked like a martini but there was NO sweetness of vanilla, chocolate or any other sweet flavor. There was no smooth finish of vodka... literally very harsh espresso with nothing else. I put it to the side hoping our server would come back. My son finished his dessert entirely and we waited... and waited. My drink sat full on the side of the table and Tony tossed our check down without question and turned to run away. I had to nearly chase after him to get his attention when I explained my drink was not good and just wanted it removed from my bill. He asked if I wanted them to remake it and I said no, I wasn't even sure it was the drink I ordered. He did have it removed but literally came back with the check and tossed it on the table and ran away quickly again without a pen so we couldn't sign to our room and leave. It dragged painfully on and on ruining what could have been an amazing experience. My son had to finally get up and ask for a pen which Tony gave him with no words and seemed annoyed. So odd and lacking in hospitality. Is this normal at an upscale restaurant to not care if your customers are satisfied? Coming from the Bay Area and dining at other upscale restaurants I just haven't ever felt "less than" like I did here. I sill left 20% but Tony, I am a 30-50% tipper and you judged us wrong. We may not have been in sequins and tux's after coming off an 8 hour drive and in comfort clothes, but deserved better. Serving is a demanding job, and I appreciate hardworking hospitality professionals as I was once one in my younger years. Customer interactions significantly impact a guest's experience and a server that is dismissive or unfriendly does not reflect the level of service I would expect from a business with such a great atmosphere. Went to Cara Cara for dinner on July 25th and was turned away at the door -- staff said they weren't taking walk-ins. Fair enough, except when I checked their website minutes later, there were plenty of open reservation slots for that exact time. Turning away a customer while your own booking system shows availability just feels like poor front-of-house management. Also Google has a feature that tells you if a place is busy or not and for Cara Cara that day it said "less busy than usual." A part of me wanted to booked the reservation just to see what would happen but I decided to go somewhere else. Disappointing experience -- I wanted to try this place, but the disconnect between what staff said and what their website showed doesn't inspire confidence. Basically, I've never had a bad experience here, and the food is delicious. Whatever you decide to eat for dinner because the steaks delicious, even if it's not on the menu, you need to get their Vanilla Bean ice cream affogado. TDF. We ordered most items in a shared fashion with a few individual exceptions. The Douro almonds and the marinated olives were excellent starter snacks. The cocktails however did not hit it to say it nicely. We otherwise started with Piri Piri Fried chicken, Vegan antipasto, Hokkaido Scallop Crudo, and cauliflower tacos. The grilled albacore, hangover burger, dried figs and prosciutto focaccia, and the trumpet mushroom focaccia were a touch more substantial and filling. All food items were generally delicious but on occasion could've benefited from a tiny touch more salt and flavor. We skipped desserts except for BD surprise as we did have a major one waiting at home. Parenthetically, I was told that the the second Goin restaurant at the bottom of the Proper (Caldo Verde) doesn't have the same great view but serves the better food: to be tested in the near future). Mac & cheese was a little underwhelming and a small portion size.... I would probably opt for something else if I came back. The cheesecake tasted good but it was a bit crumbly and I prefer a creamier cheesecake. The cauliflower tacos were 5/5 though. Great serving size, good flavor, incredible. I've found the food and the service to be hit and miss. On one occasion there was a coursed menu that we chose to do and every dish was incredible, and a great deal. There's something about rooftop dinners in LA that just feels right, and Cara Cara reminded me exactly why. The Food I went with the branzino, perfectly cooked and full of flavor, and also got to sample the fried chicken from across the table, crispy, juicy, and everything you want from a comfort dish elevated just enough for a setting like this. For dessert, the flan was a solid finish, creamy with just the right touch of sweetness. Ambiance The rooftop setting is what really seals the deal here. With soft lighting, a gentle breeze, and the downtown skyline in the background, it creates a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Our table of six couples never felt rushed or cramped, and the layout made it easy to enjoy real conversation without shouting over music. Service Staff kept things moving smoothly even with a large group. Drinks came out at a good pace, and everything from water to cocktails was handled with attention. Speaking of cocktails, the Carajillo and Espresso Martini were both excellent, rich, smooth, and balanced, just like the evening itself. End notes: This spot easily earns a return visit. The restaurant is great and inside the beautiful proper hotel. It's a bit of an odd location for such a nice hotel, given that it's not exactly the best part of town. There is parking right next to the hotel which is convenient and $12. Once you're inside, it's a total oasis. The view of the skyline is nice, and the pool is beautiful. They do change their menu frequently as everything Yelpers recommended were not on the list. We tried the tacos which were delicious (comes with 2 per plate) but not filling enough for one person so u may need some sides for sharing! The truffle fries are great for sharing. What a disappointment. Left feeling very frustrated. Had difficulty getting a table we preferred (we had reservations and it was not super busy). Was offered a blanket bc I was cold. When it never came i asked 2 more times. Still never came. We were told the lovely fire lamp woukd be lit. It never was. A "wellness " charge added to the bill is completely bogus . Such a great Roof top bar ! Really we were here for the vibes. I have the Shrimp Pasta - it was 6.5/10. I kept adding salt. Could benefit from more flavor. A little more on the overpriced but we wanted to experience the roof top experience which did not disappoint. We had cocktails, those were good. read more
