When a friend recommended Kyler's, we knew we had to take a little road trip to check it out. Primarily a fish shop, you know the offerings are going to be local & fresh as soon as you pull up to this harborside location. Fishing boats literally surround the place! But, a huge, inviting outside deck shows that this place is much more than just a fish shop. We were here to eat today, not shop. And, boy, did we eat! On a cold, windy day - that beautiful deck was out. We ordered & grabbed drinks & settled into a small table - one of just a few in a corner of the shop. This time of the year the kitchen seems to do mostly take-out. We started with a New England Clam Chowder & Stuffed Quahog. The chowder was thick, rich & and delicious, though maybe just a tad floury. The stuffie had just the right amount of spice. Loved the thumb print to help aid reheating - an idea I may steal! But, the main event, by far was the amazing Fisherman's Platter! Plenty of food for two to share everything was perfectly cooked & could not have been more fresh. Good, freshly made fries provide a base rather than overwhelming the seafood. The platter included a half dozen each of good-sized scallops & shrimp, fish, more whole-bellied clams than we could count & even a bonus, unexpected crabcake. After sharing the starters, two of us couldn't finish. A walk through the shop after eating continued to impress. Load of prepared items, all manner of local, fresh seafood, huge pools of lobster. On noticing that all of the shrimp were US caught wild & chemical free, I asked if this was true if the kitchen too. So happy to hear it was! While we missed out on them, the extremely knowledgable fishmonger said they often fly in fresh shrimp from the Carolina's on the weekends as well.
