I've been coming here for years, and I have to admit that I am probably the least adventurous customer they have. Every time I visit, I order the same thing: fish and chips and a cup of white clam chowder. When something works, why mess with it? The fish is always crispy without being overly greasy, despite what some reviews might lead you to believe. The portions are generous, and the fries have always reminded me a little of the fries served at Wright's Farm. I'm not sure exactly why, but every time I eat them, that's the comparison that comes to mind. The clam chowder is also very good. As a lifelong Rhode Islander, I'm firmly in the white chowder camp, and theirs is done right. It's flavorful, satisfying, and pairs perfectly with the fish and chips. The setup is simple. You order at the counter when you walk in, they give you your number, and you grab a seat in the dining room while you wait for your food. It's efficient, straightforward, and keeps things moving. The staff has always been friendly, and I've never had an issue with service. Another plus is the value. The prices are very reasonable, especially these days when it feels like every restaurant meal costs twice what it did a few years ago. You get plenty of food for your money, and I've never walked away feeling disappointed. Parking is easy thanks to the large lot, which is a small thing that becomes a big thing when you're hungry and just want to get inside without circling the block looking for a spot. We usually stop in every few weeks, and that's probably the best endorsement I can give. If a restaurant keeps earning repeat visits year after year, they're doing something right. It had been a while since I checked out this RI staple but I've been wanting some fried seafood and figured that today would be the day. When I arrived, around 3pm I was one of only 2 tables there. It's counter service and the teenagers taking my order were respectful but not overly kind. They didn't tell me I needed to wait for my order as they wouldn't call it out. But, I digress. The restaurant itself is small but clean. Dated in a cute way. You can tell they've been in business for a long time and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I had seen online that they had a scallop and shrimp plate but that wasn't offered today so I settled for shrimp and fish along with a cup of chowder. All this and a bottle of soda cost $40. Not an amazing price but I thought it was reasonable as a treat. My food came out quickly and I started with the seafood chowder. This chowder is amazing. Very creamy, decadent, and full of fish. I can not recommend it enough. The shrimp were also delicious. They were fried very well and moist. Not greasy at all. I recommend those as well. I have conflicting thoughts on the fish. On one hand I know that the English preparation is a heavy batter. I'm okay with that. But this batter was borderline soggy. No crisp to it whatsoever and the fish inside was completely lost to the breading. Which was honestly too bad because the fish itself was nice and flaky. Do I recommend Ye Olde Fish and Chips? Sure. I like supporting small business and I in they add a lot to the area. Would I get the fish again? No. But I will be first in line for the scallop and shrimp plate if it ever comes back to the menu! read more

This used to be a favorite of mine and many locals. As far as I'm concerned, to me, the place is now closed permanently. I will never go back. Terribly overpriced now. Over 20 bucks an order now with a very small piece of fish. Fries are either over cooked, or under cooked, no happy medium. Take all the batter off the fish when you get it a see what you're actually paying for. You can't even get coleslaw without paying extra. My grandfather used to own a restaurant with this very same recipe. He would not like this. It's gone downhill. The place is not clean, portions very small. Prices are off the charts and they make you pay their credit/debit fees for accepting those cards for payment. I was here yesterday (7-24-26) for dine in. When I got my regular F&C, the piece of fish was so small I questioned it asking if this was a regular order or small (since they do have small orders now). They said it's a large order. My response was "If this is large, I'd hate to see a small". After removing the greasy batter, I ate the very small piece of fish, a couple of fries and left still hungry ! ( I am 5-10, and 160 lbs, so I'm far from the typical fat person you see at buffets) . If I was the owner, I would not like knowing my patrons left my restaurant still hungry. At $20 an order, is fish really worth it anymore? A few bucks more, you can get a steak or other nice dinner with generous portions and not leave hungry. You can also get swordfish tips at the Lodge in Lincoln in huge portions for around the same price with soup or salad. Or if you still insist on F&C, try the Roast House. Theirs is excellent, much better portion, and it comes with coleslaw. You can even sub a baked potato for fries, no extra cost. read more

Okay ... I am a fish and chip-aholic. I own that. I visit more 'chippies' in London than I should, given that the ones I seek out tend to use beef tallow (fat) which is a practice many restaurants stopped in the early 90's. Remember hoelw chicken McNuggets and french fries at McDonalds tasted so much better in the 80's? They were cooked in beef fat vs. vegetable or corn oil which is more bland. Ye Olde doesn't use beef tallow. I will be straight up ... this wasn't even close to the best fish and chips I've had. The fish was a bit thin and mushy vs. flaky. The fries were soggy and the batter on the fish was overly greasy. It wasn't as bad as it sounds but I've had way better. The price/value is what surprised me. It was very affordable. What I got for $9 would have been $18 at a fancier sit down restaurant. Considering the price and the scarcity of fish and chip stands in the US ... I'd come here again despite the mediocre food. I think the oil might be not hot enough which would account for greasy batter and mushy fish. The restaurant itself is a bit dated inside and feels kind of like a seafood restaurant from the 1970's with wood paneling, various cheesy nautical memorabilia on the walls and a front room which was loaded with boxes of supplies next to tables, etc. The covid protection was great ... hand sanitizer at the door, socially distanced tables and lots of signage. I believe they had limited outdoor seating. Woonsocket itself is a scary place. The buildings are cool in a retro way. It felt like a gritty town in England with all the brick and stone buildings. The people I encountered in town were downright frightening. Lots of bad tattoos and scary piercings. Plenty of neon colored dyed hair. On my way into town, apparently I wasn't going fast enough (5 mph over the limit) because an old SUV started to tailgate me and flash its lights. It pulled into the next lane and two fat gothy looking kids in their early 20's hung out the window and put up their middle fingers. Welcome to Woonsocket. Then in town, a 70 year old woman with neck tattoos stared me down in a pretty scary way. 6/26/2024 Needless to say for 16.95 the fish and chips was not worth it. The fish was small and the portion of fries even smaller. I don't mind paying if I get my monies worth but this definitely was not worth the trip. My wife had the fish and chips and I had a fish cake. The fish cake had very little potato And was small in size. The service was good and the cashiers were very pleasant. I have been here many times and the portions are just a fraction of what they were. I will not be driving from Providence where I live to go here anymore. I like a thick batter and so far have had this here. Easy parking, the inside as stated is a tad retro though adds to the charm. Price wise, works ok. This is a 40 + minute drive for dinner for me , am not sure why have not been visiting alot sooner. The Chips are excellent, my lady mentioned they are not salted, just like they are in the UK, shocking, Ye Olde English Fish N Chips has English chips. If in doubt stop by and give them a try.
