Located in a small plaza on the corner of Wilbur and Roscoe, next to Spiceland. The driveway into the place could be a little confusing since you could enter through Roscoe (by the 7-11), around the corner off of Wilbur, but there is another drive way that has been closed off which leads there the Plaza Signage is located. I had this location saved as one of the local mom and pop restaurants that I wanted to visit since I truly enjoy local small family restaurants. No table service, but able to order at the counter towards the back of the restaurant. Once the food was served, great customer service. The young lady kept checking in on us if we needed anything else. We ordered Menudo which was a little more oily than normal, a bit bland. The meat was fatty, no hominy, and about half of the bowl had meat. Served corn tortillas and with side of cilantro, onions, chile de arbol, lime, and oregano. Also ordered a combo of Chile Colorado with rice and beans. The beef was tender, tasty rice, but the beans tasted like from a can (not homemade), and 4 corn tortillas. 2 large drinks (size of cup were the almost the size of napkin holder - A+). I stopped by Castillo this morning to get a breakfast burrito. I was in the area after visiting Costco and this place was the closest to me. I found parking just fine in the small plaza this place is located in so it will be a hit or miss when you come. I asked what was in the breakfast burrito and just asked for no beans. It didn't take them long to make it and I took it home. The breakfast burrito comes with chips, salsa and red sauce. The customer service was fine when I was here, they handed my order to me when it was ready. I thought the breakfast burrito was very greasy and started dripping when I took the first bite. It also kept dripping while I was eating it so I think all the grease was building up. The chips were stale, so I only ate like 1 piece and I didn't like the red sauce. The pico de gallo was good though. read more

I don't like leaving negative reviews but I am very disappointed this morning with our food from Castillo, it was our first time trying this restaurant too. It was a to-go order so our disappointment initially was when we got home and found NO hominy in the menudo, would have been good to know that's how they make it, then the broth was bland too, not much flavor. We ordered the salsa verde plate too and I think it was just ok, not impressed. The other thing to top it off was that it was overpriced, we wouldn't mind having paid $41 (2 sodas included) for this if the food was actually good. I give it two stars because the service is friendly and the restaurant looks clean. read more

Came here for breakfast. I went with the huevos rancheros. Let me say this they weren't what I expected. Im use to the hard fried tortilla but, the food was great. The rice and beans taste good. Was in the area and craving machaca. So glad I found this place on Yelp. It was early in the day so not crowded. It's a small place, nothing fancy, and pretty hidden. Friendly service, accommodating, and quick. Ordered a machaca plate, an asada burrito, and horchata. Free chips and salsa when dining in. The spicy salsa was so dang good and made my scalp sweat! For years my family dined at Sabroso Mexican Restaurant on Vanowen and Corbin in Canoga Park. We were quite saddened when they were forced to close due to the pandemic. Sabroso was nowhere near fancy, but it was authentic Mexican food with wonderful employees. And its salsa was incomparable. Or so we thought until we found Castillo Mexican Restaurant. The salsa is amazing and they have marvelous carnitas tacos and Chile rellenos which are my personal favorites. Like Sabroso, it has comfortable seating and is very informal. You place your order at the counter and they bring it to your table, freshly made and hot ( heatwise and spicy). Excellent rice and beans and fresh, warm tortillas. Who could ask for anything more? Castillo's will be our new haunt for sure. read more

I thought this was going to be a spot I'd go to a lot since it's close to me. I've tried them out a few times so here it is. The lady at the register definitely has an attitude like a previous review recounted. It's as if you are insulting someone the second you open the door to this place and an attitude is given for you just being there. The second chick that handed me my food both times was dry like their food. Sad environments usually play into the food. The carne asada was not good at all here. Tacos were pretty generous with meat but I didn't like the flavor. I felt like the tacos were super dry even doused with their mediocre salsa. The nachos were very bad. Burritos were just as bland as the tacos. Taquitos with chicken were super dry and were not good. The rice and beans had a weird flavor to them as if they weren't stored correctly and going bad. I just ate there for the first time. Excellent!! I had the beef enchiladas and a carnitas taco. Both were just delicious. The carnitas was crispy just the way I like it. The beef enchiladas came with guac and sour cream along with rice and beans. The beef so so flavorful!! I've eaten Mexican food all over the valley and this is now my go to place. As stated before I been following Castillo since he cooked at the OG Sabrosos he's a good dude and cares about his food. Since he opened we have been supporters since day 1 infact we send alot of friends and friends here. But....Recently we been asking to buy his Mole it's an orange yellow mild mole with carrots and celery in it typically on rice or some enchiladas. Most restaurants serve this type of mole even Senior Sol and sell it. In support of Castillo we asked and bought it twice getting an attitude from his wife every time. Last time I sent my Mom to buy a small side of it and the wife again gave her attitude but this time Castillo was eating lunch. He asked why do you need it and my Mom replied I make enchiladas for my Son but don't know how to make this type of mole. A woman he was sitting with amd the wife said in Spanish "no she is lying they buy it to copy it and sell it". Knowing him for over 15 years and my Mom and knowing you would need a kitchen and a lab to copy it and knowing my kids and parents they really think we have time to copy and sell this somewhere. NO. we're just trying to make some food at home and don't know this type yet. Since we figured it out but my Boy calling my Mom a liar and a thief with you and your wife is NO BUENO. Saturday morning I was looking for some menudo. I called several places until I reached Castillo. The gentlemen who took my order was very nice and was happy to let me know that they did have menudo. I headed out to pick up my breakfast! My order was ready to go as soon as I arrived. They stated that they placed everything that I needed in the bag. I should've checked. I got home to find a very greasy soup and only half a lime. No where near enough lime to cut the grease. The soup was not enjoyable. I had a small serving and tossed the rest. Yuck Felp! It has turned into complete garbage. I went to this place based on the reviews and I was so disappointed. I hate Felpers! I go out of my way to find new places and give my business to small mom and pop shops. I love Mexican food, I have my go to places but I am always on the hunt to find the next unknown gem. I am so upset about this experience. Food: I had the chicken and it was gross. I took one bite and left the rest. The rice and beans were mediocre at best. I literally paid $10 to eat rice and beans I could not eat the chicken. I helped myself to the salsa bar, and after getting some salsa I found a nice long hair in it; nope, wasn't mind. Place: When I walked in there were several flies in the restaurant, I should have walked out and I didn't. Otherwise the place seems clean... Castillo Mexican restaurant has a very family oriented staff. They all were in sync with each other. Everyone was extremely polite and welcoming. We had a big group of 8 and we were hungry. They greeted us when we walked in. Politely explained their menu and answered any questions we had. The owner was a shorter man but he was ON IT. I mean everything, from refilling our waters to getting us tortillas chips salsa salt I mean he didn't have us wait for more then 1 minute to get us taken care of. I ordered the steak and eggs breakfast plate with a breakfast burrito on the side. The steak was cooked perfect as well as my eggs. The steak wasn't that cheap steak it was grade A ranchero carne with breakfast We were from out of town and this was one of the first places we ate when we got in. Absolutely loved it. This is a good spot for a Mexican breakfast if you're in the neighborhood. There aren't any bells and whistles but Juan will make you feel at home. We had the chorizo and egg and the huevos rancheros. Our food was made to order and tasted like homemade Mexican food. I got the breakfast burrito and usually at Mexicans restaurants breakfast burritos are full of flavor but honestly breakfast was extremely mid. didn't really have much flavor and the salsas aren't that good that come with it. One of the pieces of meat was completely fat and I had to spit it out. Overall though it gets you by if you're hungry but would've just preferred getting something else.
