Service was great. Clean place and that's good. Food was ok, but I can only guess that the ingredients used must contain preservatives and flavor enhancements. Wife and I try to eat food that is not processed and no chemicals. I think that a well trained chef could easily turn this place into a great restaurant. I ran a family owned business but assuming family favorites will please the general population or love of cooking are not good reasons to have a family restaurant. Hate making these kind of reviews. Genuinely was hoping this would be a good spot. But this is what yelp is for. Honest reviews. Was on a bit of a time crunch, Walked in, place was empty so felt somewhat hopeful I'd be out of there quick, ordered 3 breakfast tacos (lady was on phone) $17 later....yes seventeen for 3 tacos.....I got my order (didn't take that long) but one of my tacos was wrong (mind you I was the only one there. Only order lol). They said they could correct it but it was a start it from scratch kind of deal which I had no time for. I just took the taco since I know remaking it or refunding it would add to my commute to work so I just took my tacos and my big L and left. Tacos were mid at best. Not the worst I've had in Katy (there's some bad ones out there for sure) but definitely not worth the price. I'd give them a good 5/10. Not sure if the tortillas were hand/home made but could be wrong but if you can't tell then they're just as bad as tortilla from a bag. I tried but couldn't eat the taco they got wrong so definitely took a $6 loss there. Had a sausage and egg one that was decent. Most likely will just stick to 7-Eleven tacos (Laredo taco co) next time. It is much more worth the value (under $3) and they're good. Better tortilla. Bigger. Faster. Cheaper and they have specials pretty often. I know this place isn't a breakfast taco spot which probably means I need to check their actual lunch/dinner food out but if the lunch price point is similarly scaled as the breakfast I probably won't be coming back at all and this place will be like its predecessor: Overpriced mediocre Mexican food. Time will tell. Shame cuz it's on my way to work but again this is just my experience doesn't mean you won't have a better one or that it will be the same on my next trip but the bar is set low for me. read more

From the outside it looks like it could be a hole in the wall, but the inside is very clean, new, and comfortable. Finally someone has awesome breakfast tacos in this town!!! We had carne guisada, migas, picadillo, chorizo and egg, and chicharron. We liked the migas best, but the carne guisada was a close second. They serve your food with warmed red salsa...the way it should be served! They also have a spicy green salsa that isn't just spicy but has delicious flavor. The staff is super friendly and makes sure you are enjoying everything and feel welcomed. Ever since moving from San Antonio we've struggled to find great tacos, but I think we've done it! First time eating here and the ambiance is beautifully decorated and the place is really clean. I ordered at the counter and food came out quickly. Pros: The Carne Guisada, is the best I've had in Katy. It reminds me of my mom's and that's always plus. Cons: The tortilla looked and tasted like it was a day old and I wasn't offered chips and salsa. The staff were very friendly and I would recommend this place to everyone. I can't believe all of the four-star and five-star reviews on here. If Yelp allowed a ZERO star that would be my rating. We live in Cypress, but were in the area and I looked at Yelp and saw this restaurant had high ratings, so we thought we would give it a try. We went there about 3PM (lunch/dinner time). That may be part of the problem, but I don't think so. I should have gone with my first instinct. We open the door and there were no other customers. This is family owned and some 60ish guy (I assume one of the owners), was sitting at one of the tables with his hair net on and waved us in. It felt like we were walking into someone else's house unannounced. No one really greeted us and we took our own seat. A younger lady came to our table and gave us menus and told us when ready to get up and walk to the bar to order. There was a tall ladder right next to our table (the dinner area isn't that big) and as we were eating our queso and chips, a man was drilling a hole in the wall standing at the top of the ladder. Not exactly ideal to be doing that while a customer is in the restaurant. It was really loud and my wife and I looked up at him and he looked back and said, "is that too loud?" duh Meanwhile other workers that looked like family just seem to be hanging out (one sitting at another table while looking at her phone) Another lady that worked there (I assume another family member) had her laptop out and seems to be handling some restaurant business. meanwhile the hair net man sat at the same table the entire time we were there. Now the worst part. We ordered chicken and beef fajitas. This had to be the worst restaurants fajitas we've ever eaten My wife looked at me and asked what I thought and I nodded "so-so" I was being nice. Both the beef and chicken meat were very dry. The pico de gallo looked old, the refried beans were ok. Meanwhile the guy drilling a hole in the wall (turns out he may have been dismounting a TV) was installing a TV in the back of the restaurant. The service was next to nothing. They delivered our food and we had to call the waiter (another person than the person who delivered our food) to get a to go cup for my wife's soda. The fountain drinks are self-serve. And to top it all off, the food was higher priced than most good Mexican food restaurants. I don't normally write reviews or bad reviews, but this was bad. This is my second YELP bust in a month. I'm beginning to not trust good reviews. I knew it didn't meet the smell test the second we stepped foot in the restaurant. At Castillo' Mexican restaurant this morning for breakfast. Yep Tex-Mex but figured reviews were good so let the adventure begin. Trying the menudo and barbacoa taco. The menudo was clean and not much grease, a plus. The meat was tender and plenty of it. Spices were evenly used for the flavor bringing the experience to my happy place. A good surprise because there are few places in Katy with good menudo. The barbacoa taco was very good and the green sauce was perfect. A little disappointed that decaf coffee was not available but some restaurants do not offer decaf coffee. Breakfast is just not the same. Some of us can't have caffeine and it is would be nice to have. Atmosphere is good, staff was very friendly. I was alone and my cost was $$$ so not a cheap taco place. This place is real Tex Mex from a family that is down to earth and make everything from scratch. As soon as you take a bite you realize that they cook the same dishes at home. We ordered the enchiladas verde, Texas burrito, steak fajitas, chilaquiles and everyone loved the food. Johnny and Gina the owners came out and made sure everything was perfect. We went out of our way to try this restaurant after reading great reviews. We really wanted to like it after hearing about it. The chips and queso were good, unfortunately we thought the fajita meat was chewy and ours had quite a bit of gristle in it. It was rather expensive for the amount of food we were served. There are too many great places in Katy to drive out of our way to go to it. Maybe it was an off day, but the staff was not very friendly. read more

Man this is an awesome spot. We arrived 30 minutes before closing and we were apologizing for arriving so late. Owners were like no problem and they were extremely friendly. Food was very good and tortillas were homemade . Definitely a 5 star, only negative but it's very small. I would prefer to sit and order from a waiter/waitress and have food and drinks brought to me. My son declared "the only better Mexican food is on the streets of Mexico!" Everything was amazing! The customer service is spectacular. The food is even better! You order at the counter and then take a seat. They bring out homemade tortillas and salsa. It's those fresh fried chips that have the air bubbles and the best crunch. The green salsa is spicy! We started with the queso flameando served still bubbling with fresh made thick flour tortillas. For entrees we had the verde enchiladas plate and the fajita plate. Both were perfect! At first my son thought the fajita plate was small but in the end he couldn't finish it all because it was so filling. The enchiladas were perfectly flavored. Castillos is by far one of the BEST Mexican food places I have been in a while! Service was exceptional and the food was sooo good. My husband prefers carne guisada in a brown gravy and this was on point. My enchiladas were perfect, cheesy and flavorful. I know I am a tortilla snob but these tortillas were very much like what I was used to growing up. Thick, floury and just plan awesome. I cannot say enough about the service.
