First time we went there we had excellent service! One down fall we did have moldy toast ,was brought up had no problems. We went a second time, the waitress was amazing,the hostess didn't come off friendly for having little ones. We have one under one, while we waited to get our high chair, the waitress couldn't find them but that's nonetheless ,my baby in the booth standing touched the the decorative glass by the booths. she wasn't hitting hitting it banging on anything;We did wipe the glass down to get rid of the finger prints. Noticed that the hostess kept making faces looked frustrated we apologized,again we wiped the glass. I will say I was very impressed kids portions! read more

I've been in the area for over 4 weeks with work and had such a craving for country fried steak! Castlewood was less than 2 miles away, so off I went! I called in my order and did take out. Super nice on the phone and said my order would be ready in 15. I asked for the gravy on the side and they gave me an entire cup! Nice to have that for the mashed potatoes:) Salad was fresh and plenty and the country fried steak hit the spot. They call it chicken fried steak btw.. I love to explore, looking for interesting places like Castlewood, for breakfast. The area is unique and when I discovered this Castlewood I thought it was going to be a winner. However after striking out on three separate trips there, I am giving up. People are very nice but the breakfast cooks must really try to ignore any and all requests from customers. Not sure what is so hard about eggs to order, crispy hash browns or well done sausage but it's beyond them. Three times they're out. Too many great breakfast spots around. read more

Good food, but they're not used to strangers. I walked in at 2:30pm and all the employees just stared. Someone, not my waitress, asked if I wanted coffee, then made a big show that she offered as though no one believed her. My waitress only spoke to me when I was halfway through the page to see if I was enjoying everything. Greek Spaghetti was excellent, but could use one or two more ingredients. Feta cheese, green peeps and noodles is tasty but could use garlic and some other veggies. The specials all come with a glass of wine which I thought was odd for a workday, but appreciated. All told, Greek spaghetti, beef barkley soup, scrawberry snortcake and a glass of Manischewitz - 8.40. I'll go back unless I need something professional or even friendly. read more

Only if we could rate this place based on friendliness and service: it would get top rating. Unfortunately, the food (my rating is based on breakfast) is below par, possibly even poorer than Bob Evans, Waffle House, Denny's, etc. Meanwhile, the place remains packed with locals crowding to order breakfast as cheap as it was in the 80s. That's the other compliment that needs to be given: there's tons of value here, just no quality. Clearly, the locals that come here could care less about quality (a lot of retired folks come daily). They scarf down the bacon and eggs, combos and toast. Meanwhile, everything tastes like it came off a dolly from a food distributor. I personally think even the Waffle House is better (which I know there aren't many nearby, but it's a great comparison). The bacon tasted microwaved. The bread like it was something that was bought in the value aisle at the grocery store and the hash browns seemed like they were sitting under a heating lamp for a few hours. On the other hand, the servers couldn't be more friendly. If you want to hang out with the locals, eat low grade food and overhear fishing stories this is your spot. read more

Had breakfast with my family and after about 15 minutes of sitting there they decided to turn the air conditioning on with a fan on above us. Asked several times to turn the air off and it never happened. Beside us being cold on a day that was only 70 degrees outside our coffee was ice cold along with our food. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! Breakfast was actually unhealthy. I ordered the Huervos Ranchero's w/side order of sausages. Took 1 bite of sausages and it was pink inside and cold. Obviously not cooked thru. Next call to the Health Department. Eggs on top of the H. Ranchero's were so runny, I couldn't eat them. As our server was giving us our check for $25.43, her comment was Sorry! Told the girl at the cash register and she said..."Sorry about that" but it was obvious to me that she didn't really care. My elderly MIL lives in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, where she lived as a child. While we were visiting her, we wanted to take her out to lunch to some of her favorite places. She chose Castlewood Restaurant for one of her outings. She has a walker, so she is always a little worried about navigating in restaurants, but they were very accommodating to us, and we were seated in a booth right by the door, where we could tuck her walker away. I was surprised to find so many Mediterranean options on a small-town restaurant menu, but they offered many such items, including spanakopita. I was vegetarian or Lent, and I had many meatless options here. I had a huge Greek salad as an appetizer and then the spanakopita plate for my entree, and it was way more food than I could eat! My MIL had soup, and it was a very large bowl. My husband had turkey and mashed potatoes, and the gravy tasted heavenly (I cheated a little to taste it). A funny thing: when I ordered a glass of cabernet sauvignon to go with my lunch, the waitress asked me if I wanted it "straight up or rocks." I faltered a little, and then got my bearings, answering, "No ice, please." :) If you're in the area and want great food for a good price and a down-home feeling, Castlewood Restaurant may meet your needs. read more

Went here recently for a quick breakfast with my dad. It's been around for years, but new owners recently took over. I can't compare to what it was like with the previous owners, but our recent experience was great! Low prices and tasty diner-style breakfast food was exactly what we wanted. Our server was sweet and timely too. The cinnamon French toast was particularly good and comes in a half or full-order. My dad and I shared a half-order in addition to our meals, which was a sweet compliment to our savory breakfasts. They make their own bread for the regular toast too. read more

Had the ham and cheese omelet which is my usual go to for breakfast at this kind of place. It was generally good but I have to say it's usually better at most other diners I go to. Had a side cup of fruit which was ok. Service? Went on a Sunday morning so it was crazy busy and we had a large-ish group so my order came out delayed due to a mix up. Also, there was a little mix up of the fruit being subbed for hash browns instead of being added to my order but probably for the best I didn't get hash browns anyway. For my health. :-) read more

My wife and I live close, and we go here for breakfast. The food, at least breakfast, is good. Service is actually pretty good as well. For the most part, the cooks get it right. The extra crispy request on hash browns is somewhat completed, but it's not really extra crispy. We think it's pretty decent. What really bothers me is the lead cook literally tossing each plate on the warming deck for the servers. He slams each plate down, almost as though he is proclaiming the plate is ready....so, hurry up and come and get it. It is so fucking loud! Please stop doing that. I recommend asking for a table away from the kitchen window. read more

Is it too much to ask if a new owner decides not to honor a former honors gift certificates (Restaurant.com) that they post that on their door, or the server mentions it when you lay out the certificate on your table the whole time you are there?! How is the public at large supposed to know that a place changed hands and former agreements are no longer honored? Also, just notify Restaurant.com that you are no longer participating and they will notify all certificate holders to exchange them. Very poor customer service, will not be back. read more

Ordered the Mediteranean skillet, it came out quickly in a porcelin bowl(not a skillet dish). I have to say I probably wouldn't have even mentioned that if it would have tasted good. I ate the scrambled egg with a bit of gyro meat. It was the meat that was super salty. I kept trying little pieces with the rest while waiting for the waitress to come back. Slowly, I kept piling the meat to the side. The waitress finally returned but by this time I had all the meat piled to the side and had eaten about half of everything else. When asked how the food was, I told her it was super salty and I couldn't eat the meat. (By this time, I had asked everyone else at the table if they wanted the meat. No one else cared for it either.) The rest of the potaoes, tomatoes and onion in the bottom ended up being too salty to finish. So, I got to pay $9.50 for a scrambled egg, a little bit of potato, tomato, and feta; I didn't even eat half of it. I did overhear the waitress pass on the complaint. No offer to make it right. I would have even appreciated an offer to order something different. I would have even paid for an extra egg or side of bacon. Anyway, WORST gyro meat I have ever had. (My family is half Greek and I havehad a lot of different gyros and mediterranean food.) I'm hoping it was just a mistake of oversalting in the kitchen because the restaurant seems clean and inviting and the tzatziki sauce was delicious. read more

On Dec.19th I witnessed an old stoop shouldered busboy wipe tables then use the same cloth to wipe off a knife he had been using to cut pies. Nothing bad until he returned the wiped off knife to a metal container, same container a waitress then took a knife from to serve with my chicken Parmesan. Yuk!! What , no dishwasher? This restaurant was SOLD right before Christmas. The new owners said in the Journal Times newspaper article that they weren't going to change things. The radio station USED TO BE Country (it made since Sturtevant is a rural town). The music now is 70's-80's rock; it stinks. The soups are CHANGED my favorite used to be Friday's Vegetable soup with it's rich tomato broth; now it is almost clear maybe vegetable broth with NO FLAVOR. Thursdays soup is PALE TAN (somewhat unappealing)NO MORE TOMATO BROTH BASE now a starch blah.....soup. Today 1/12/16 they were taking out the pie and cake display. They are replacing the fantastic dessert assortment with tres laches and flan. I wonder if they will still have tapioca pudding. I dine at this restaurant several times a week. I USED to go the The Olympic Restaurant for American and Greek food but they changed ownership and are now Tequila restaurant. I DO NOT EAT Mexican food and Castlewood has been doing FANTASTIC food for 18 years (on the plaque at the door's entrance) before now being sold. Today as I dined only one other customer came in. The NEW OWNER NEED TO ASK THE CUSTOMER'S what THEY WANT! The prior owner ALWAYS cane around and greeted his customers AND ASKED HOW THE FOOD AND SERVICE WAS. The news owners never ask me now. I LOVE eating GREAT food (as the prior owner's staff made) and viewing the trains as they go by. I HATE the thought of I may have to only sit and sip a beverage here any more so I can still train watch. The wait staff are like family but some now have lest with the new owners taking over. read more

Had a Saturday lunch with a friend after doing some shopping at Milaegers (good place). I had the pork chop dinner. The pork chop was a nice size and had miminal fat on it BUT it was undercooked - pink in areas and actually blood visible (veins?). Sent it back. Cooked another one only it was 90% fat and grissle. So that was unedible, too. Ladies bathroom was from the 60's. The faucet and sink were so dirty they could no longer be scrubbed clean. Stay away. read more

New to the area and attempting to find a go to fish fry place. This is not it. Waitress was dumb as a brick. I asked her to tell me about the fish fry because it was not on the menu and she said "it's fish, I think it's baked in oil". I had to coach her to find out the sides So once we finally waited on our waitress she forgot our sodas. The mushrooms were good. Forgot the ranch. The fish fry came out looked hand battered. Got me excited only to bite in and find all 3 pieces still had raw batter inside. Fish was bland. Waitress was absent nearly the entire time. Couldn't send food back other refills cause we couldn't find her. The man at the counter was very personable and that was the only highlight. He did bring me a Greek salad I didn't order because " I looked like I could use it". Whatever that meant. So now I felt obligated to eat a salad which had nothing in it I liked. Luckily my girlfriend ate some so we wouldn't offend the old man. Needless to say we will not return for a fish fry. read more
