I used Castro Car Wash twice and was at first happy with their service, until the rude upselling started. The first two times I got the basic car wash for $75. I know my car gets a bit messy with my 3YO (mostly crumbs, no sticky spills or soiling!) but they were clear that they could only do a 30 minute service at that price. I was on board with that. Terms were respected, we all got what we wanted. I tipped the workers a bit extra. But then the third time I came the woman at the front desk very rudely told me my car was too dirty (it was cleaner than the other two times and nothing crazy) and that I had to do the $300+ option. I said no thank you and reassured her that I wasn't asking for any more than 30 minutes of work. I didn't even have much longer than that because I was on my way to another appointment, which I explained. She flat out refused with no further explanation, so I left. Pretty bummed. The irony is a had even moved homes so this car wash is now further away for me, but I was happy to drive a bit further as I had had a good experience until then. Now I'm not coming back mostly because the experience was so darn unpleasant. I left feeling like she disliked me personally and wondering if I had done something to insult her. When I got my new car I discovered it had very delicate paint. It often cost double or triple what it cost to have my Camry washed and waxed. I was so frustrated! I literally asked my car where to take it. My trusty EV navigated me here! It cost 50% less than in San Ramon! It was on par with Walnut Creek and still less than Dublin. I was shocked I hadn't reviewed Castro Car Wash after my first visit. They did an excellent job! So, when hubby said it was time for a detail I brought it right back here. I try to remain calm and collected during every purchase, but when paying $375 for a car detailing, I expect the results to be nearly brand new. I should not see dust, crumbs, or signs that the car wasn't properly vacuumed. I just went over to Castro Car Wash with my new SUV to get their Standard Wash for $55. The woman there briefly looked inside my car and told me they wouldn't be able to do the standard wash because of the dog hair. There was a very small amount of dog hair in there, which would be very easy to just vacuum. She tried to sell me their Deep Detaling package for over $200!! just because of the dog hair. What a rip off! Shameful!! I then went over to Tower Car Wash and paid just $39.99. they didn't try to upsell me to a much more expensive package just because of some dog hair. Since my car is brand new, I was going to be a regular customer of Castro Car Wash going there at least every two weeks, but that's definitely not gonna happen now. I've been here a few times. I went there recently and the person at the front was rude, and charged me $200. At the same time- the times when I've been here and person at front has been nice to me, the price has cost 70-80 and it didn't take long. They've done a good job with cleaning. But it was basically the same quality each time. They raise or lower the price and just see if people are willing to pay it. And then it's basically a shakedown until you pay the higher price, you're stuck in the line and it's too hard to get out. And they make you feel bad if you question. It's not rude to say it's too expensive. Buyer beware. If you're paying that much, shouldn't they have some respect? I haven't experienced this level of rudeness ina while. Money grabber. I just paid $160 for a CAR WASH. A REGULAR SHMEGULAR CAR WASH. I pulled in for a basic wash and the girl opened my back seat and said there's pet hair. You need deep vacuum. Sure ok. And she charged me $200 for car detail. I told her that was extremely expensive because my car is new. I didn't need all that extra cleaning. I only needed an exterior wash. And she said ok, and she charged me $150 plus tax. Wtf?! And so I said sure. Fine it must be a great detail. No. It was 30min regular car wash and regular vacuum. No flipping detailing!!! What the actual F. This place is a scam. Because a basic sedan wash is $50 most and pet hair removal as an add on was $45 max. Total should've been $95 max. She played me. Don't come here. The fact that the service is called detailing is ironic. They're more concerned with speed than thoroughness. As far as the car wash, save yourself some money and go to the spot on Bayshore. Castro's hand wash missed more areas of the car than any automatic service I've ever been to. When they don't even bother to clean the bird poop off the center of the hood you know you've been hustled. I'm writing this as I change into sweats and a tee to go rewash the interior and exterior of my car. I feel like I got pickpocketed by this lazy business. I had two experiences with them and I am not coming back. Here is the usual routine when you bring your car: the lady that works there will tell you the options and try to push the pricier wash (over $150). If you choose the "standard wash" (interior vacuum and exterior wash), she will ask to come see you car and then tell you the car is very dirty inside and you should take the expensive option. This happened the first time (even though the interior was OK), I insisted on the standard wash, she accepted and they did a good job, for their credit. Now, I came back there a second time. This time, the lady came to see my interior and said it was very dirty (again) and then refused to do a standard wash. What?! Well, I suspected she was exaggerating, so I took the car to Tower Car Wash in Mission and they happily did interior+exterior for 40 bucks (an excellent job btw). Do not waste your time coming here. Just go to Tower in Mission or any other of the many car wash places in SF. read more

I've given this place multiple chances, but the experience is always the same. Regardless of how clean my car comes out, the female attendant at the cash register seems far more interested in her phone than in providing customer service. On top of that, every visit includes a pushy upsell, even when my vehicle clearly doesn't need the extra services. It makes the whole experience frustrating and unprofessional. I was pretty disappointed with the care taken towards hand car washing at this location. The drying towels used were really old and post wash, I found numerous scratches on the car. The workers seem to be in a rush to get cars washed and dried so I'm not surprised they applied a ton of pressure while drying. I won't be taking my car back here. read more

My only complaint is that the woman who first greeted me remarked that I had only paid for the external wash when referencing my review, which left a pretty sour taste to be honest. Two stars because when I went to ask for a basic wash and interior vacuum, they said I needed more than the express one which she (the lady at the front) claimed to be ~165(inclusive of taxes). I went up to to the counter to see the pricing chart and this wasn't even part of any packages. So ended up just opting for the exterior wash which was extremely sub par. I am posting a pic of the mats which they refused to vacuum which I took it elsewhere and they did the job for fraction of the cost. This place will find a way to give you a higher price than their advertised. I've used them before and encountered some issues but this time they didn't even try to make it right. For me I came in looking for a basic outside wash and interior vacuum. Despite this being about $50 online i was quoted as being $150 because there were lots of bugs on my car and they would use a special solution to dissolve the bugs. Okay, sure. Now 30 min later I find the car to have visible splotches all over the front bumper where the bugs were. I pointed this out to one of the workers who told me it just needed to be buffed out. Then i went and flagged down the person who originally quoted me $150 and she said it was damage to my paint and not fixable. I asked her if she was fucking kidding me because i assumed she was messing with me. She insisted i was incorrect that this could be removed by buffing and instead required my car to be repainted (this car is 3 months old). I tried to explain this was not an issue but she gave me two options (1) buff it out myself in front of them or (2) take it to another car wash and if they get it out she will refund my money. I was frankly quite surprised, and I had no tools to remove it myself. She implied that if i rubbed it with my thumb and it didn't come off she wouldn't give me a refund. I argued for another minute, and she was adamant they would not do anything about it. Had she not made a big deal about how they would remove the bugs i would not have made a big deal about how it was an incomplete job. Will not be coming back here and will dispute the charge. It's not the first time I've come here and gotten a different price than advertised. You're better off going somewhere that acts more honestly if you're trying to get anything more than a basic wash. Edit: after I posted this review the owner reached out and had addressed that this issue was not addressed while I was there. Friendly staffs. The lady politely tried to upsell the higher priced wash but I politely refused and paid for their basic wash. Total wash time was 22 mins (yes, I timed it) while I was waiting comfortably in their waiting room. My car was next in line and so from the moment I got there until it's done was 25 mins. I had no problem whatsoever and I went home with a clean car inside and out. And btw my car wasn't that dirty in the first place and I remember them checking the interior before she presented me their "wash menu". And based on other reviews, it looks like you can't get the basic wash $48 if your car is way too dirty and needs so much work. read more

I was on time for the reservations that I made for Castro Car Wash on Booksy for 4-4:30 PM for a simple car wash with interior vacuum for $45. This was basic. According to the manager behind the counter, Booksy did not send the reservation to them. The manager took my payment first and then told me that there were two cars ahead of mine and that the car would be ready in 45 minutes. I told her that I wished she had told me that they would not be able to do it in 30 minutes because I would have left. If I'm on time for an appointment I expect the business to know their schedule and be on time. The car looked done at 5:00 PM. However, when I reviewed the car. There was still bug splatter on the front of grill, hood, headlights, and below the grill. Additionally, the rear tire rims had a thick coating of black brake dust. I was forced to walk the car to point out where the car needed to still be cleaned to a minimum standard. This is a poorly run business. I cannot recommend Castro Car Wash, and I will not be back. read more

It was a quick service (~30-40) for a regular interior and exterior standard wash. They went over their detailing service and did look inside my car when I first arrived, but that is normal business to push more expensive services and I understand why they want to look inside first since someone can have lots of trash/crumbs everywhere which would make them work more. I could see some marks from the products they use, but I am not upset because I think that is normal. But if you are looking for a regular wash at a good price, this is a place to check out. COVID Update: Nothing notable has changed, so proceed as usual. It's hard to vacuum a car in the city and get it hand-washed. Here, you can get both done, and it's priced based on the size of your car. It was $45 to get a basic exterior and interior cleaning for a small SUV. The car wash is behind the gas station where there are powerful wet/dry vacuums, hoses, and cleaning supplies galore. It takes about 30-40 minutes for it to be done, but there's plenty in the colorful Castro neighborhood to explore. They also have some plug outlets if you need to charge a phone, though the waiting area is not anything fancy. You pay upon dropping off the car, and they do accept credit cards. You have the option to pay tip in advance or later, though both times I got a stern note that I was to pay the lady cashier tip directly and no one else. They do have a $25 extra charge for pet hair - so don't expect a flawless job - they do as much service as you pay them to do. They do also mention that they have excellent detailing services, though they are $200+. My favorite detail they do (which sounds silly) is that they take the rubber floor mats out and wash them. Overall, they do a great job and it's a great value for what they deliver for the city. When the car is ready, she'll take you to the car and have you check for any spots they may have missed. She/they will take care of any little things that may bother you and then you are on your merry way. read more

They got the dirt off my vehicle but not the droplets of tree sap. A good hand wash, but you can tell if they sprayed more around the door edges, then you will get some of that residual dirt as well and rims still have brake dust on them. I've been needing to give my car a deep clean for a while now. Its a wonder how much a good detailing inside and out and can make all of your road trips feel so much more luxurious. I spent around $300 with tip and tax which is a lot but entirely with it. They got out so much pet hair, crumbs, and sand from my seats and in between the seats in addition to shining her up and making me feel like my 2011 Subaru is like new. I noticed a little bit of sand and hair in between the seats and under the floor mats and they very kindly spent another 20min detailing it for me. Beware! I have gone to the CCW a few times in the past and returned yesterday before a road trip in our 2021 Toyota Camry. Normally I park in the back and go to the desk to say I want a basic wash and pay for it. This time the woman desk clerk came out to the back where I had parked as I was getting out. She said that she wanted to look over the car. The Toyota is normal sedan, driven on local roads and highways without any off-road or backroad travel. When we got inside she said the interior was "very dirty". Huh? No. We don't transport stuff in the car, have no messy youngsters, and use it only for passenger transportation. She then said that I couldn't buy a regular wash because the car interior was so dirty and tried to get me to buy detailing. I pushed back saying that the car was really in average shape... as it had been the other times I had gone to the Car Wash. But, she would not let me buy a regular wash and was going to charge at least $100... and that wasn't detailing but just reflecting the work they'd have to do, she said. Nope. I left and went to the more-chain-like car wash on Mission Street. They did a fine job without trying to upsell me. I wanted to support local one-off businesses, but, wow! Finally, a great car wash option that is in between the express $25 and the exorbitant detailing options. For my Tesla Model Y, it was $65 for an exterior hand wash and interior vacuum. Four people worked on my car in 35 minutes to get it sparkling clean -- and I have a toddler with a cookie-in-car eating problem! An express exterior wash makes sense if your car is only dirty on the outside, which if you have kids is never the case. Detailing is overkill, since it is perfect and my child immediately gets to "work." Also, there is conveniently no appointment required (caveat: I went on a weekday). P.S. I needed a wash badly! My car was filthy. I stopped by here (hidden behind the gas station) and asked for the basic package. $30 (+$5 for SUV) for a shampoo and hand dry. I said I had some bird poop on the roof of my car and asked if it would be removed. She said they just do a spray down and shampoo and whatever comes off comes off. In other words, the stubborn stuff that stays on isn't their problem and they won't scrub anything off. She said if I wanted a scrub, I would need to get a detail package for $200. I was sure the poop would come off fine so I passed on the $200 detail service. I rolled my car back into the wash area and it was kind of bare bones. Just FYI, they use a broom thing to get to the roof of your car. I'm not sure if the bristles are soft or not so be careful if you are concerned about swirls. My car has a glass roof so it was fine for me. Overall, $30 for a mediocre wash and dry. Lots of spots left wet and not cleaned off on my car. Whatever. read more

I found this gem via Yelp. My car was dirty with ash from the fires and needed a thorough cleaning inside and out. I arrived on a weekday morning and was second in line. I was greeted by friendly staff and felt right at home. I paid $45 +tip for a regular car wash exterior and interior - this included vacuuming the inside, the removal of the interior mats so they can thoroughly wash them! Wiping down the cup holders, dashboard, tires/rims, windows and door jams at my request. The roof had a few specs of dirt left but it was an easy fix. Overall I'm very satisfied! It only took them 35 minutes and it normally takes me 1.5 hours to do it myself, so I will be returning when I'm too lazy to wash my own car. read more

Have been coming to Castro Car Wash for years and sharing how much I loved them with all of my friends who live in the city. I have always paid ~$50 for interior and exterior wash (not including extra deshedding because my dog is just gonna climb right back in). Today when I came, they let me know that due to their new policy, the most basic interior/exterior car wash package is $120 if you own a dog. Apparently dog hair ruins their vacuum and they have special wipes that they have to use for dogs??? I'm sorry, but I'm not paying $120 for a basic car wash. My car has scratches on both the hood and the trunk after a hand wash at CCW. Pretty disappointing considering this is why I chose to NOT go to a machine wash instead. When I asked about it, they said I probably didn't notice it when the car was dirty, but the scratches are too obvious. Furthermore, when I pointed out some clear spots of grime including bird poop stains AFTER the service, they asked one of the workers to come over and wipe it off and he told me "this is more than we do for a standard cleaning." So apparently a standard cleaning doesn't include actually cleaning the exterior. Disappointed by the service and the attitude. read more
