This is a nice co-op style place. Some of the businesses included are a meat market, Sushi Restaurant, Olive Oil store, Pizza, bakery (Seven Hills Baking), Puerto Rican restaurant, a jewely pop-up, bakery that's known for cream puffs and a grocery store. I'm sure there's a few more that I haven't mentioned. Here's What I Think ... This is a wonderful place to get specialty items and food. Come check it out. It's been awhile since we last visited Castro Valley Marketplace. So, a lot of eateries have changed. The only businesses that remained the same were the Market (obviously), Seven Hills Baking Co., Akemi Japanese, Baron's Quality Meats & Seafood, and Amphora. Welcome to the new eateries like Beard Papa, Slice House, La Perla, Pho 5-10, Dumpling Kitchen, Cordial Wine Bar & Bottle Shop, etc. They have a lot of food options and mostly inside seating on the first and 2nd floor. Castro Valley Market Place is a one stop work, play, eat and shop location! Groceries, cute plant decor or Jewelry. Lunch, coffee, work... but what did it for me was, we held my mother in laws celebration of life upstairs in the rentable space. The three room option is perfect to hold food set up in one room, store back up supplies in the other and the gathering in the in the great space. No need for excessive decorations. Its beautiful and elegant settings and natural light coming in from the surrounding windows is amazing. It's got the welcoming "friendly neighborhood" feels. If you haven't visited yet, you need to. Oh oh oh so cute! We formerly patronized LaPerla in Oakland, who moved operations to Castro Valley Marketplace. CVM reminds of me of a smaller version of Emery Bay Public Market in Emeryville..it's the cutest and I love it for the community! As soon as you walk in, patrons are in the grocery store section which is giving mini Whole Foods. There are other small business in addition to eateries. The marketplace is a very sweet venue with a great collection of businesses inside. I feel like it's the perfect location for a group dinner where everyone has different tastes. You can get Japanese, Vietnamese, american, Puerto Rican, or just something from the grocery or bakery. The grocery has a good selection of foods for various dietary restrictions like gluten free. A very nice, high end grocery store and market! There are also multiple places to eat in here. I saw a bakery, a sushi place, along with cheese and burger options. They also have a very spacious outdoor patio area, perfect for eating, drinking, or just relaxing. When I was here, upstairs had a live band with people hanging out drinking wine! The parking is kinda of worrisome but the place itself is a gem and a place where you can shop , hang out and eat with a dumpling, purchase some high quality meats from Barons meats and have a beard papa pastry puff all under one roof . The building itself is very well modernly done and constructed .It's in the heart of Castro valley dining and grocery shopping district . Very clean and safe . The place is pretty small and easy to navigate. The Asian dumpling place was out of most hot food items (but maybe because I came around lunch time). The pizza place was fast and delicious. There's also a bakery, a custard bun spot, sushi, a butcher, and a micro market that pretty much sells the same items/brands as Whole Foods. The outdoor seating at the C. V. Marketplace has been gone for awhile along with the weekly free music events. The very delicious Cannery Kitchen & Tap as well as The Night Owl and Lab also closed a few years ago. Was craving for ice cream and saw this next door. We live close by from here like couple miles and I was surprised when I went inside. I always go around this area and pass them but never bothered to go inside since I thought it was just a grocery store lol. It's like a "mini-mini" Eataly! There's varieties of food stalls you can choose from such as coffe shop, baked goodies, fresh meat, cured meats, and they have more upcoming. I went inside the grocery store just to get eggs and milk since I am almost out of it anyways. I love it but still yet to try the food stalls. There's one part with a bigger area and seating which is a Pizza place. Looks and smells sooo good! Then there's an upcoming thats Pho and one something like Mexican. Cool place. I like it. Cute space that's still under development. The market place itself is really cute, they also have a sushi bar, a delicious bakery, and heard papas inside from what I saw. I can also really appreciate the oil selection, the little makers market, and the wine section! Can't wait to see what else comes to vend here. Clean and modern looking food hall, with great artwork (sculptures and murals) on site. Seating available both inside and in the outdoor patio area. Businesses and eateries selling pizza, sushi, latin cuisine, meats and seafood, wine and spirits, plants, and groceries. However, options were limited both in the store (mostly vegan and organic ingredients and products) and in terms of food vendors available. Still, we were able to get a few items from the market, and were especially impressed with their variety of mushrooms. Also, had a delicious dinner and even better drinks on a Wednesday evening, thanks to Oculto and Night Owl. We enjoyed our goodies to some awesome tunes of the guitar, drums, keyboard, trumpets, trombones, and saxophones, with live music being performed by an orchestra in the lounge upstairs. All of the workers we interacted with at the venue were friendly and professional, and provided excellent service. This review is specifically for the butcher. We've tried purchasing our meat from the Castro valley market a few times and have felt like they handle meat poorly but this time we actually opened our pack of salmon to find what looked like a spider and fly dead on two fillets. Needless to say this will be the last time we buy our meat here. read more

This used to be the old billiards place. Today its a market with various different retailers. It was patched together and renovated fairly well - and the parking lot looks great with the stone pavers. When I heard they were saving this old crumbling concrete building I was initially against it. Especially given the proximity to the Hayward fault. But I was surprised at how well it turned out. There are outdoor seating areas and various stores. More stores on the second floor - but I didn't explore up there. I visited the natural grocery store for a very underwhelming lunch and the bakery for an outstanding baked good. Overall its a good concept with many upscale stores. Freshness is probably the biggest issue - as I'm not sure how much demand there is for that sort of thing in this area. Today the area was still festive with holiday decorations. People were there I think enjoying food and coffee. This place is very similar to the Alameda Marketplace - if you happen to be familiar with that. read more

Indoor market and foodhall, a place designed for local residents to gather for shopping, dining, and events like live music. It's small and not intimidating in size with nice interior and exterior design. Everything is priced higher than normal though and a bit far for us to make it a frequent destination. The grocery section is like whole foods, with an emphasis on organic and smaller brands that have higher quality ingredients. The honey sold here is from the beehives they keep on the roof and you can watch them gather the honey during special events. I loved the proper butcher shop, Barron's, the most. They have their own dry-aged section and its always great being able to ask for weird cuts like beef cheeks or banter with the crew on how to cook/grill certain meats. We tried Cannery here a couple months back and loved the Kennebec Potato fries, truly excellent. read more

The Castro Valley Marketplace is in the heart of Castro Valley, it is a bit hidden though. There is a good amount of parking in their parking lot, so that was convenient. They have a different variety of eateries as well as a grocery store in here. There is also a good amount of seating - both indoors and outdoors for you to enjoy your food / snacks here. I like the concept of this food hall type marketplace. Nice little stop to check out, I had came here about 2 times so far. The first time was for the Akemi Sushi in here and the second time is for Beard Papa's. I was not the biggest fan of their sushi at Akemi, but their cream puffs at Beard Papa's was pretty good. read more

Unfortunately, I walked in to grab a few items and saw not one, but two large rats scurry by in the grocery area, which raises significant concerns about hygiene and safety. One can only assume that these rats also have access to the preparation and cooking areas within the marketplace. While I hope for improvements and a brighter future for this marketplace, the current conditions are alarming and need immediate attention. I informed a worker but they just shrugged and said " Yeah, we already know about it." It's disappointing to see such potential hindered by such a serious problem. read more

but....THE BEST Cafe/Brewery and IPA'er, has GONE, since opening day, they had close to SF Garlic Fries alike Giants Stad/Gilroy Garlic and many many other items, they EVEN hung on during C-19! S a d history for CV MktPlc now. But others can make up for it, alike the newer Pizza place upstairs, keep in mind, these are artistinal food hall type places, not dimino's (yes DIMinoes) or corp greed food, the ONLY large co is the brand new addition that replaced The Oak Spice Shoppe (yes OAKland) has come later and gone back to OAK, miss the Japanese Curry Pwdr. IS....Pappa Beard custard and filled pastry. Otherwise besides the Natural Market their are them and the Butcher ($$$) that have other locations, maybe one, two or more, but NOT Corp. The Market takes most of downstairs but it reminds us kinda of Rainbow Mkt from SF, but def NOT WFM, except the prices are high, but alot of natural, Organic and Fair Trade and other good things. Some cafe's upstairs are POP UPS come and go and some are pretty pricey, BUT QUALITATIVENESS IS KEY here folks, ESPECIALLY for Castro Valley , wow. AlCo (Alameda County worked on this Co-op type of place for awhile before it became to fruition. Really Good Surprise for down the hill from the Tri-Valley. We will see and wait for the Beer Place replacement, it is also a large area of the CVM inside and out. Lots of seating for every purchase outside, especially post Covid-19. Don't forget to go DOWNSTAIRS or elevate downwards to the Wine Bar, They make awesome Affagato BTW!!! Nice place also pricey, but hey, it's International and CA Wines, what can be said. Very happy CV has put together an establishment as nice as this marketplace in the area. It's only the beginning of starting to have nicer things / places to hang out in town without having to drive far. The baker, butcher, florist, winery, spice specialist, olive oil connoisseur, sushi chef, brews on tap, dine-in options, and pop-ups all under one roof! Seven Hills Bakery was one of the first businesses I went to. They have freshly baked bread, sweet and savory treats made daily. Be sure to get there early as to not miss out on something you've been craving. The Oaktown Spice Shop and Amphora Nueva Olive Oil Works vendor has items that would be perfect as gifts or if you, yourself are in need of restocking your pantry. Baron's Quality Meats & Seafood always has a nice looking assortment, but I have yet to buy -- I haven't been cooking at home as much the past few months. The wine cellar downstairs has a wide array of wines, beers, and other spirits. They also host occasional events from music performances to tastings. There is a craft cocktail lounge, Night Owl located on the upper level. Akemi is the sushi restaurant - I've only done take-out, but if you choose to dine-in, you're welcome to be inside or outside. Pricey, but great quality. The Cannery Kitchen & Tap is a nice option for dining in - I've eaten at one of the picnic tables with the umbrellas out in the courtyard on a nice sunny day. The East Bay Nicoise Salad and the Fort Point Animal Tropical IPA hit the spot. I've visited the marketplace when I've been on the search for unique ingredients that which I was unable to find at Al's Market, Safeway, etc. The Castro Valley Natural Grocery store is like a mini Whole Foods or other type of specialty curated product market. Yes, you'll find super unique / healthy products at a cost. Private parking lot which can be entered two different ways. Part of it is shared with the strip of businesses where the Ice Creamery is. Entrances to the Marketplace - from Castro Valley Blvd, the side parking lot, through the restaurant / market doors on the opposite side of the side parking lot doors. We came here for Barons Quality Meats (inside the market place). While there, we checked out the market. Except for being a lot smaller, the Castro Valley Marketplace feels like Whole Foods in Austin. Similarly, the farmers market in the NYC subway just east of Times Square (forgot the actual name) has a similar feel. This feels like the San Francisco ferry building on a much smaller scale. Produce was nicely organized. The buyers do a great job and the staff keeps the displays organized with quality products. If you want quality meats and produce consider giving them a try. The Castro Valley Marketplace is a great addition to the neighborhood offering fresh produce, pastries, spices, olive oils and vinegars, seafood and meats, sushi, soups and salads, wines and all things edible under one roof. Basically, a one stop shop for a nice dinner or hosting a small get together...one day soon! Before you walk in, a nice gentleman standing by the door offers hand sanitizer and opens the doors for you...nice touch. My visit today had about 7 vendors with others opening slowly which is completely understandable during these crazy times...especially, when businesses are closing every other day (insert sad face). So comparing this marketplace to the City or why not the Mercado Central in Valencia doesn't make sense...take it for what it is...familiar and delicious artisan vendors in the 'Stro! :) Eventually, the 2nd level will open to classes such as cheese making, fermenting, pickling and canning classes which I've participated looonnnng ago when Nicole of FARMcurious taught from her home. I'm realizing now that reviewing the CV Marketplace itself is a little tricky. It is somewhat a sum of its parts, and typically the reviews of it are a reflection of the individual businesses that make up the CV Marketplace. I'm also realizing that by its very nature it is a community space and due to that, it has some additional responsibilities. The recent abrupt changes to the Music on the Paseo, by the owner of the CV Marketplace, has made me reevaluate my initial impressions of how the CV Marketplace itself is run. Even though there's been quite a lot of community support for the previous music lineup and plenty of feedback regarding its cancellation, the owner hasn't made a public statement about why he decided to unilaterally make this change or has he made himself available for communication with the community. I feel this is why people came to Yelp to express their views, as they didn't have another way of doing so (and their reviews have now been removed, as I'm assuming they were not about the CV Marketplace per se). As far as the building itself, it's quite nice, as is the parking lot. So far I'm noticing that the upstairs space still seems to be somewhat in the works as far as eating/drinking/shopping. As it's been more than a year now, it's a little surprising. Bringing in a proper coffee/espresso shop would be a great addition, as I see folks already like using the upstairs as a place to sit. When implementing his vision of the CV Marketplace, I hope that the owner will equally consider the local community's desires and needs, be transparent, and find a way to make himself available to feedback and discussion with the community. Update: Added a photo of a Sept. 2021 post from the CV Marketplace Facebook site showing that they limit who can comment on the new Paseo Music Series posts. It appears that they are blocking any type of engagement with the community regarding these events; pretty disheartening, and frankly, weak. As a community space, I give them no stars on their community engagement. read more
