I came here with my family today, and Mei Mei Supermarket really stands out. They carry so many items that most Asian grocery stores don't have, which makes shopping here a lot easier. The prices are slightly higher, but it's understandable because the store is very clean, well-organized, and offers a much wider variety. Overall, it was a great experience for us, and it's definitely worth the visit if you're looking for specialty items in a clean and well-maintained market. Everyone here is so friendly. read more

The new and spacious Mei Mei Chinese Market is located in a shopping center along Castro Valley Blvd, between Marshall St and Forest Ave. It operates in the space previously occupied by Rite Aid. My family and I checked out this new market on 10/04/2025. It was very busy when we pulled into the parking lot at around 3:30pm. The ingress/egress points were poorly designed and created a lot of confusion for drivers. Once parked, the first thing I noticed was the soon-to-open dim sum restaurant next door (HL Peninsula). I can see parking will be a problem when they are open for business. Upon entering the market, the first section we encountered was produce. They had a decent selection, but not as vast as I thought it would be. Prices were about the same as 99 Ranch. The meat section, located in the back, featured a wide array of fresh and frozen choices. Most of the stuff was not pre-packaged. Prices were fair in my opinion. The seafood section, also located in the back, was probably the most interesting part of the market. There were at least a dozen large live tanks. Aside from the usual fare, they also had live high-end items such as Australian lobsters, leopard coral trout, king crabs, Vietnamese mud crabs, etc. I couldn't think of another Asian market in the Bay Area that has such a fancy selection. We ended up buying a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff. The staff we encountered were friendly and polite. Mei Mei is a nice market addition to the East Bay. It's great there's a bigger Asian store in Castro Valley. They were just a smaller store previously and relocated to a bigger spot. Parking can be tough because they share HL Pennisula parking lot. They have the essential items you would need at an Asian store. They do seem to cater a younger generation with variety of viral ice creams and snacks. They close quite early for a grocery store - 7pm. Hoping they have a successful run at this location. read more

Lots of parking in their parking lot. The only thing is that not all the lights come on and it's pretty dark in some parts of the lot when it gets dark. A bit uneasy if you go alone. Came here to check out some snacks. The place is nice and clean.This place has a lot of your average Asian needs. Looks like they're still increasing their inventory. And it just so happens that this place has some of those internet viral snacks. We got some of those fruit gummies that you can peel. Also, got some Asian chips. They even have those Lucy apples. The ones that are pink inside tasting like berries. Even got to try their fried cluckin ice cream. Some of their stuff are pricey. Like the fried cluckin ice cream cost $14.99 for three in a box. Mei Mei upgraded with this new space!! They have a parking lot that was pretty busy because they opened recently. They also had a security guard in the parking lot which was a nice add! Inside, the aisles are spacious and there's a variety of things! Nice newly renovated location! Asian supermarket with lots of space and variety! Grand opening today! Come visit today! The venue is much bigger than its prior location, maybe a tad bit too big for the current inventory. We were hoping grand opening would come with some specials or anything out of the ordinary like special greeting from its owners, however, all of this was nonexistent and the store had many many items that didn't even have any prices. We will come back in the upcoming weeks, and hopefully things will be better labeled and priced. Inventory on the seafood side was quite lacking but perhaps they were still moving in. In the new location, bigger and more spacious. I finally don't need to worry about my cart is rolling someone's feet. The produces are always fresh. The price may not be the best in town. The fresh seafood selection is unbeatable. Only issue is the parking. Be here before 10am or after 2pm on the weekend. The Sunday brunch rush next door brings in a lot people. read more

This is a nice Asian supermarket right next door to HL Peninsula restaurant. It's clean and well organized, and everything was well stocked when I arrived on a Saturday afternoon. There's produce, meats, seafood, frozen meats, noodles, spices, live crab and seafood tanks, beauty products, and pots and pans. Like most supermarkets, there are tasting stations too. I'm very happy there's a bigger chinese supermarket close by! Now I don't have to drive to dublin 99 ranch! The inside is spacious and has a lot of the items I'm looking for! I will say that it is lacking some english descriptions; I can read some chinese, but as an ABC, descriptive english on vegetables instead of "misc item" would be helpful LOL Parking is a pain though, I feel like drivers disregard the arrows on the floor, double park and even create a parking spot when there isn't one. read more

The new Mei Mei is filling a much-needed gap in the Castro Valley-Hayward-San Leandro market for Asian groceries. Yes, there are other places one could go, but I've seen too much questionable refrigeration and too many bottles past their expiration at the competitors. Previously I had been ordering from Weee, and was frustrated that vegetables would rot quickly. I have not had this problem and I appreciate that the labels say when a vegetable was packaged (usually day before or same day). One star off because the packaged meat section is limited (I don't always have time to wait at the counter), and the receipts don't make sense because most items are listed as open scale. read more

Huge new Asian market in the area! I've been wanting to go and finally did on a Saturday. Parking can be a little wild. Lol I won't lie. But, its a big lot. With a nearby restaurant so be patient and you'll find a spot to park. The market has such fresh seafood and produce. I love it! Cashiers was helpful and friendly with showing me what I needed. I was hoping for more, perhaps too much. There used to be a smaller Mei Mei Chinese Market across and down Castro Valley Blvd. While I didn't remember the name, my wife did. That store would have been smaller than a typical convenience store. We walked into this much larger store and was surprised to see that there were only six check stands. They were off to the left side of the entry. Two were open and the lines were not long. The entry itself was very empty, not a good use of what has to be expensive real estate. As any retailer knows, empty space is lost sales space. The selection of veggies was less than expected. There's a fine balance between having enough variety to satisfy the customers and not overstocking to the point of creating waste. I think that most 99 Ranch stores have a larger selection. I was hoping for a large section of fresh noodles and perhaps some frozen noodles as well. This too was a disappointment for me. I was hoping to see some Sun Ramen The sauce section was huge with lots of flavors in multiple sizes. Price wise, I can't say whether or not they were competitive. On two different aisles, there were stockers putting product on shelves. They each had a cart full of merchandise blocking the aisle that they were working in. This is a training issue that needs to be addressed. It's one thing when Costco employees block an aisle during forklift operations. That's a safety issue. But when you just have cases of product on a six-wheel cart, there's no reason to not line up the cart so guests can easily pass by. We'll check back by in a month or so and see if they've adapted to their new size. read more

This Asian market moved from their previous smaller store to this former Rite Aid store front that is a significant size improvement. They can adequately compete with the large Asian grocery markets. So it has more shelf space and larger meat and seafood counter. To small degree it will lose its small store charm. In any case, it's refreshing to have this larger store and help avoid commuting to the tri-valley or San Leandro areas for Asian grocery. read more

Today I ventured to visit the new Mei Mei supermarket, which just moved from a smaller store to a gigantic mini Costco style store up the street! Yes, the size of this store is overwhelming! It used to be a Rite Aid, and I sure didn't know Rite Aid was so big! ( have never been to a Rite Aid ). There are shelves and shelves of items, and still plenty of open space. There are fruits and fruits, all kinds of vegetables. A meat section and a seafood section with fish tanks that have lobsters, live red prawns ( expensive 43$ a lb ), oysters,... a poultry section where I saw ducks and black chicken for sale. Also unusual I saw they sell toilet paper and tissues ... from China. There are sweets and drinks, mostly from China, but also the Kit Kats from Japan. They have Oreos from China, strawberry, Blueberry, Raspberry flavors... and since today is the mid autumn festival, the selection of mooncakes is very small, mostly from Hong Kong. They do not offer ready to eat food here. Lots of cashiers ready to check the guests out. This market shares parking with a new restaurant which is still in construction. Parking seems a bit tough, the lot of not that huge, so when the restaurant will be open and guests stay a long time. It will not be easy to find a spot then. read more

Finally, a top-tier Asian market right here in Castro Valley! The selection at Mei Mei Market is impressive--everything from live seafood tanks and fresh-roasted duck to a massive aisle dedicated to rare snacks and instant noodles you usually only find in Asia. I was particularly impressed by the produce section; they carry high-quality specialty items like Okinawan purple yams and Japanese sweet potatoes that are hard to find elsewhere. This supermarket moved from a small shop to a much larger location some time ago, and the improvement really shows. The product selection is much better, and the prices have also improved. I'm loving the new Mei Mei market location!! So much parking-- if you can't find any, go around the back. The store is basically a small 99 ranch-- they have a great selection of fruits and vegetables. They have a large snack aisle, a million types of ginger candies, a good variety of Asian sweets. They also have a home goods section which reminds me of 99 ranch. The people working there are quite friendly. There aren't many staff on the floor, so you'll have to ask at a checkout if you're looking for something. Overall it's clean, bright, and easy to navigate with a broad selection of goods. read more

Lots of empty shelves as they are still unpacking and it was after their grand opening. Some shelves remain empty, which makes it difficult to find the variety of products customers expect. I don't usually write reviews anymore these days. But whoever wrote the 3* review was a bit harsh. The market is organized and clean. They actually stocked interesting snacks and food that I normally don't see in Ranch99 or Marina. And they were smart to anticipate a huge crowd on opening weekend and staffed their cashiers accordingly. The check out was super fast. I want to support their business and leave them a good review. New asian market and I am a bit conflicted. Usually the decor is really nice and that is the case for the Mei Mei for the most part. It feels like they worked really hard for 80% of the store and just filled it in for the rest. Compared to other new asian markets, it could have been done a bit better. The parking can be horrendous at times since they share it with HL but sometimes it's okay. The workers are pretty nice for the most part. Their prices are solid but they could use more deals. Some stand out items are their large batch of fresh noodles for 7 bucks. They should have more fresh produce in my opinion but they do have thai basil so that's a reason why I come here.
