This bakery was recommended on the SFBI list of bakeries and pastry shops, so I had to try and stop by on my way back down south from the east bay. It's in a corner of a very cute gourmet food hall and had a good selection of goods left in mid-afternoon on a weekday. Service is also friendly and prompt. I had to get the kouign amann because I always get one wherever I can, and also picked up a plain croissant, currant scone, and panna cotta. The KA was decent; I would call this one a diet KA because they only put the sugar on one side so it was more like a brulee'd croissant. I also have to admit that, while this shaping is very attractive, the direction of the lamination makes eating this feel like shards in my mouth. However, flavor was excellent. The plain croissant is very plain. It's decent but I've had better. The scone and panna cotta, however, were delightful. Both had lovely soft textures and wonderful creamy flavors. The scone held up for two days and wasn't even a bit stale when I finally had it for breakfast. Highly recommend this tucked-away bakery in the Castro Valley! read more

I want to start off by saying that this is my first review for a non-gluten free place. I am being re-tested for celiac disease and engaging in the "gluten challenge". Seven Hills Baking Co was my first stop as I haven't had sourdough since childhood. I got their classic sourdough loaf. Even though it wasn't warm anymore it was still amazing. It was quite hard to cut into with a serrated bread knife, which I'm not sure whether that's normal or abnormal for gluten sourdough. However, the inside was lovely and soft. Nice strong sour flavor, spongy dough that was almost moist (not at all dry). I want to note on the gluten free front that seven hills baking co offers a few items which they advertise to be gluten free. Though the ingredients may be gluten free, the items are baked in the same kitchen, the same oven, and then put side by side with the gluten in the display case. Furthermore I don't believe their ingredients are all certified gluten free. Therefore I do not recommend seven hills baking co for anybody with celiac disease. Do not buy your friend with a gluten allergy or celiac these items. There is most certainly cross contact. read more

Very friendly staff. 1) Ginger scone had lots of candied ginger pieces that were not dried just perfect 2) Savory scone was not dried pefectly flavored with garlic, chives, cheese 3) Artichoke Pretzel when heated was so yummy! Absolutely love the Epi Baguette! I keep coming back for that. It almost looks like a braided version of a baguette and it's so easy to break off a piece of it. Next thing I know, I've eaten at least three pieces! I first discovered Seven Hills when a friend introduced me to Castro Valley Marketplace. Seven Hills bakery rocks!!! Last year they didn't make galettes des rois, either somebody was sick or something happened, but YAYYY!!! They have them this year!!! Only available yesterday and today, January 5th and 6th. Yesterday there was quite a long line to buy them or pick them up. Today I went earlier, so no line.... Yet. This little bakery is located on the ground level of the Castro Valley Marketplace. I stopped by to pick up a Kouign Amman since it was recommend to my husband and he wanted to try it. Once I got there, I was greeted by the friendly staff who told me their best seller is the Kouign Amman. There were a bunch of different pastries lined up along the display case & bread lined up behind the counter. I ended up getting the Kouign Amman, Chocolate Almond Croissant & Almond Croissant. My husband & I couldn't wait, so we ended up eating them in the car on the way home. All of the pastries were delicious but the star for us was the chocolate almond croissant - sooo good!! After trying the kouign amann in Oahu, I've been craving for it since then. After doing some research on Yelp, I found this place. I arrived roughly around 10am and there were plenty of pastry selections. I ordered two kouign amanns and one chocolate croissant. In terms of flavor, the kouign amann were buttery and flaky on the outside but when I got to the center, it was quite dense. As for the chocolate croissant, I was quite disappointed. Part of the crust was crispy but it wasn't buttery nor flaky as a croissant should be and when I finally found the chocolate "pieces", there wasn't much of it. read more

I have had my eye on Seven Hills Baking Company since their opening five plus years ago and was so glad that I could finally go. The line was long when we arrived, but thanks to their hard-working team, it wouldn't be too long before it was our turn to order. Although a number of the items along their counter behind the glass partition looked delicious, including their Sugar Brioche Bun and their wide variety of scones including Ginger, Chocolate, and Parmesan, there was something about their Chocolate Almond Croissant that was calling my name, so we ordered one of those in addition to one Ham & Cheese Croissant and two of their signature Kouign Amann pastries. And although they were not featured within their glass counter, we had to order their savory pizza slices and so we ordered three of their Pizza Romana Slices, with one going to a friend. Taking our sweet and savory baked goods home, we dove first into our savory pizza slices which were more focaccia bread-like in consistency, topped with a nice array of fresh ingredients, cheese and pesto sauce it was caramelized to perfection thanks to the overall bake on it. Our Chocolate-Almond Croissant was your standard croissant that had a lot of depth to it thanks to the amount of chocolate, dark rum, and natural extract ranging from vanilla, orange, and almond. I love the rich layer of sesame seeds coating their Ham & Cheese Croissant, but the true star at Seven Hills Baking Company is the kouign amann, baked to golden, crispy perfection. The intricately layered pastry is caramelized and crisp on the outside, glazed with a sweet, sticky syrup, while remaining soft and flaky within. It's easy to see why this has become one of their signature pastries. Our total bill came to $37.75, and the seven pastries we enjoyed were more than enough to keep us happily satisfied for days. I've been here before and they always have such a great selection of pastries. I do wish they sold lattes, though I got a Parmesan artichoke pretzel and typically I don't like pretzels, but it looks so good and I'm glad I got it. It tasted so great a little heavy on the garlic but I really love garlic. I just think it was pretty strong. The service was really nice. It's situated inside the Castro Valley Marketplace so you can pick up some other things while getting your baked goods fix. Panna cottas are always at the top of my list and this one outshines its $7 price. Clean, vanilla bean top notes balanced with just enough sweetness from the fruit. I could go on and on about it but I'll just say it's divine and move on. The espresso walnut cookie had that satisfying chewy bit like a good brownie. Both of those cookies disappeared too quickly; I should have stocked up. I had the Cheddar Scone the next day and it held up! Of course I took a bite while it was in its prime, to compare. I needed to try that chocolate croissant, let me tell you it was flaky, buttery, not too much chocolate and in a way light. It was delicious, they do not warm pastries up not sure why? Other than that, I've had their chocolate and regular butter croissants. They are indeed very good, but not cheap. However, nothing is really cheap these days. Stopped by the Castro valley market place and stumbled across this bakery inside. To my surprise the items we got were so yummy! I got a Swiss and ham croissant that was so good! The sesame bottom was definitely a game changer! We really like this bread place. Tonight the individual sized rolls and goodies as pleasantly stocked. We like their Epi sourdough that you can tear apart into rolls. This is so convenient to get good portions without easily over doing it. We also got a currant scone for breakfast.
