We almost weren't sure we had the right spot but once we opened the door, it was alright at this small but packed bakery and grocery store for all things Portuguese - baked goods, canned fish, linguica, bacalhau and other sundries. I was looking for a laptop charger at the thrift shop in the strip mall and saw Silva Bakery; didn't know anything about it, but the baker was so friendly and kind I knew I had to buy something, so we got a bag of delicious rolls; nice crust on the outside; and pillowy and flavorful on the inside. They were perfect holders for the pan fried oysters we had for dinner. I have to come back to try the egg tarts! I wonder if they are the predecessors for Chinese egg tarts? Cute mom and pop bakery tucked behind a fast food restaurant at corner of Mission and Lewelling. Good amount of foot traffic on a weekend morning. Store is full of packaged shelves with Portuguese breads and pastries. Was in search of these egg tarts and almond tarts which we're located on a side table by the cashier. Con is no prices or at least I didn't see any on containers or posted. The Pasties de Nata were about $2.25 each and almond tarts were a bit more expensive. I don't prefer as they ended up being too sweet for my taste and the egg flavor didn't come through as much as dare I say condensed milk (?) like flavor. Not reminiscent of my experience in Portugal. *****Customer Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic***** Silva Bakery is a tiny Portuguese market located in this nondescript strip mall near the E. 14th St offramp of Hwy 238, right at the Hayward/San Lorenzo border. I bookmarked it a couple years ago because they are one of a handful of bakeries in the Bay Area that sells pastéis de nata, or Portuguese custard tart. I finally got a chance to pay them a visit on 01/30/2021. The place wasn't busy when I walked in at around 11:20 am. The small interior was filled with all kinds of imported goodies and snacks, artisan breads and pastries, high quality canned seafood etc. The only COVID safety measure I observed was the 5-person limit inside the market. I was helped by the owner, a very friendly lady. She had a mask on but no gloves. I ended up getting a few items - half a dozen pastéis de natas, a box of raspberry cookies, and three almond delights. The total was $21.50. The pastéis de nata was excellent. In comparison to the Chinese egg tart, it was a bit smaller in size. The crust was slightly crispy, but not as flaky. The custard filling was sweeter, denser, and creamier (I think they put heavy cream in the filling). I loved the browned top. It was like eating burnt cheese. The cookies and almond delight were good too. They were both great with a cup of coffee. Very glad I finally gave this place a try. Will definitely return in the future. I gave my very last egg tart to my cousin. He wasn't very excited when I handed it to him as he said he's not a big fan of portugese egg tarts. I said, no? No way! Everyone loves these things. He takes a bite... "OMG! I've changed my mind!! This is the best thing I've ever ate!!" Ha! There you go, another fanboy of the egg tarts here at Silva Bakery! ... I walked in around 11:30am seeking egg tarts. Sold out for the day. Oh darn. So, the lady at the counter said that I can preorder them for the next day to guarantee I get them because they sell out almost daily and at different times of the day. I ordered a dozen, which costs $20 (inflation dude!!!). Next day, I came in around the same time and picked up my dozen egg tarts. But they actually had some available for walk-in. My advice to you is... don't take a chance, just pre-order them for the day you walk in. Then you don't have to worry about disappointment. Egg tart was creamy smooth and to die for. This review is limited to the Portuguese Sweet Bread (Massa Sovada) that you'll find at Silva's. It is the best. My latest use is as breakfast toast. The toasted bread slathered with a premium butter is a special morning treat. The hours and days are limited (the man's got to sleep!) so plan ahead. It's also a little hard to find (behind the Jack in the Box) but my phone's gps has never let me down. The bakery is filled with lots of other selections, none of which I've enjoyed, but based on other YELP reviews and his bread I'm sure they're worth a try. Support this small business. read more

I would never have known about this bakery if it's not on yelp! It's very well hidden inside the parking lot and doesn't have an eye catching store front. The bakery offers sweet pastries (puff pastries, tarts, cookies, pudding) as well as bread, can food, coffee and sausages. I got the custard tarts and an almond tart. I highly recommend that you rebake them at home so they will be warm and crispy! Custard tart I love the slightly burnt top as it gives a nutty flavor to the tart. The custard is a little too sweet for my liking but very creamy and the texture is perfect - not too dense. The edge is crispy and flaky but the bottom shell is a bit soggy and soft. Almond tart The almond flavor is very fragrant and not overly strong. It has a thin cookie crust around but thicker crust at the bottom. The tart was not dry at all and has the perfect sweetness. The almond slices on top give it a nice crunch. I like this more than the custard tart. read more

Wow talk about nostalgia...I used to frequent this place back in the 90s as I had Portuguese friends who would bring me to pick up these popular egg tarts, breads, biscotti, grocery items like cheese, dried cod, and sausage like chorizo and linguisa for their moms. Back then this used to be called Hiser Bakery and as of 13 years ago changed to Silva's Bakery... still baking their ever-popular, infamous dessert, Pasteis de Nata which is similar to a Chinese egg tart called dan tats' that are common at dim sum restaurants I find the Portuguese egg tarts more creamy and denser (slightly sweeter), browned top with a lighter and thinner pastry shell. The Chinese egg tart is less sweet, less creamy and jello-like in texture with some (I suspect) yellow coloring added with a thicker crust...sometimes, it can be a little too much shell/crust in my opinion though I do have my favorite spot in Oakland Chinatown! Friendly service, wonderful pastries at reasonable price. 1 tart - $1.50, 6 tarts - $8.50, and $16 for a dozen! Located in a worn-down lot behind Jack-in-the Box off Highway 238/Mission Blvd....definitely stop here and you'll be hooked! This is a small little bakery with Portuguese goods. It's been around since the mid 80s and I've barely discovered it now. Their Pastéis de Natas which are Portuguese custard tarts are so delicious!! It's almost as good as the ones from Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon, Portugal. The crust is nice and soft, a little flaky on the outside with creamy custard inside. If you like, you can also warm it up at home and add powdered sugar and cinnamon on top just like they do in Portugal. But it is really good just the way it is. I'm so glad I found this bakery, it's probably the best Pastéis de Natas I've had so far in the Bay Area. I'm also going to try other places to compare. I'll most definitely come back here for their Pastéis de Natas again. They tend to run out so I suggest calling in ahead of time to let them know you're coming in for Pastéis de Nata and they will keep some for you. Good quality Portuguese food and items but the customer service is not what it used to be. Placed an over the phone order (as we always have) and the lady taking our order did not know any of the traditional names for any of the items we were ordering, we kept getting "do you mean the merengue" (suspiros) which, yes is the English way to put it but I didn't feel the need to be corrected when calling it by its original Portuguese name... When arriving to pick up our order - she wasn't able to read her writing from our order and had difficulty packing what we had requested. Another note, we specifically asked for Lourais cheese in which we were told "yes we have it, that's actually the only one we have right now" just to be sold TOPO cheese (different in taste and texture) which we didn't realize until we got home as we had an over $100+ order in a giant box (we've never had to check if anything was correct in the past.) Once again - quality items, not quality service anymore. I genuinely miss the old staff and family running this place, I know there probably tired after all of the years working but this new customer service does not feel any way authentic & just wasnt the normal family friendly experience I'd ever get coming here. read more

Hayward is not a city I usually go to for... anything (no offense to anyone living there - although I have a few friends in the EB, I usually pass through to Oakland/Berkeley or to Milipitas from the peninsula). On Saturday morning (9/26/20), I was passing through from my friend's to get to the San Mateo Bridge to get over to the peninsula for a hike. It is not a big store, but there was one patron paying for her purchase when I went in. All of us, including the proprietor, were wearing masks and kept sufficient distance. The food - Sadly, by the time I arrived (actually close to noon), all the tarts except coconut ones were sold out. Since I am not a huge coconut fan, my review would not include how the tarts were. I purchased a Linguiça Roll and Berry Turnover for the hike, and a small Massa Sovada (Portuguese Sweet Bread, with cinnamon and nutmeg) for my friend to have later. So... I was a bit thoughtless. It was a hot day, and on a day like this, I usually don't want to eat something that'd make me more thirsty. And Linguiça Roll was exactly that. I think I would have liked it a lot more, had I eaten it under different circumstances. But Linguiça was quite spicy, and the pie dough, though not too dry by any stretch, wasn't what I needed then. I believe I would have enjoyed it in a shade with a cold beer after the hike; not during. I was smarter with the Berry Turnover. It was really good. I believe it had raspberry, but also some other berry (maybe blackberry) to balance out the raspberry tartness. It went well with my coffee in the morning. As for Massa Sovada, my friend respectfully rejected my gift (by saying she had too many breads to eat), so I ended up eating it myself. Not a regular sweet bread eater myself, but it was quite tasty, with just the right amount of cinnamon and nugmeg. I can see why some reviewers said they have this for breakfast toast. The service - I always try to ask questions to staff/proprietors when I couldn't get what I wanted. So I asked the proprietor - Alvaro - how early I should have come by, if I wanted to get some tarts. He said no need and gave me his business card. "You can just call me the day before and tell me how many you want, and we can reserve some for you to pick up the next day." How about that for service? I saw in the reviews that this place has been in business for a long time, and I can see why. It's too bad that I don't live close enough to it. read more

Nice find (thanks to Cheryl M.), a super tiny Portuguese market with an emphasis on a Portuguese bakery. The market itself are strictly portuguese imports and faves. Olive oils, tons of canned seafood from octopus to tuna to sardines at any flavor/level. A cooler houses linguisa of different brands, cheese and even pricey baccalao (dried salt cod). So yea, I always pick other things to get here, whilst I'm here. And the main reason why I'm here is for their Pasteis De Nata. Which is real similar to the Chinese Egg Tarts that many of us know from dim sum outings. Except I find the Portuguese version to be a little more unique and delectable. Mostly due to their crust. The crust is super soft and tender, almost like a danish dough. The egg/custard filling is more gelatinous versus creamy, so I think they include the whole eggs with whites versus a yolk dominant custard. It also isn't as "yellow" as the Chinese version. These are actually more white with an intense browning on the surface, which the Chinese ones don't do. So it is not really a matter of one being better than the other, but more of being able to choose which one you want. That's the benefit. Take advantage of it. My only knock with this place is that unless you know the flow here, you may miss out on these tarts. They only make a finite amount and they often run out. Because I don't live near by, I've only been here if I was in the neighborhood. So in the 4 times I've been here (around noonish) I only scored twice. The other times they were out and was sent home empty handed. I'm pretty sure the earlier you come the better, and I just found out that they open at 7am, so yea, I was screwing myself by getting there in the late AM. read more

Sweet bread here is as good as it gets and a good value. I believe the Hawaiian sweet bread was based on this this type of bread. Very tasty on its own. Egg/ custard tart was very good. In a thin crust and full of flavor. The Almond dream came with beautifully toasted sliced almonds that were full of flavor but the puff pastry seemed to fall flat. I have passed by the area many times in my lifetime but never got to see this bakery tucked in the corner with the door wrapped with window vinyl of colorful Portuguese breads. We picked up the egg custard, almond pastry and the sweet bread for the house to munch for breakfast. They also have a small imported grocery items like candies, spices, Portuguese honey, sauces, oils, and frozen items like sausages and linguiças. Can't believe I've never tried this place! Found it when searching for Portuguese restaurants and markets. The bakery is located in an older area of mission in the Hayward San Leandro border at Mission & E Lewelling in the back of Jack-in-the-Box next to a thrift store. I would've never found the place if it wasn't for Yelp. The bakery store portion is small but it does contain lots of variety from Portuguese sausage, pastries, breads to candies and sodas. These were the first Portuguese egg tarts I ever had and I thought they were just ok. Better than Chinese egg tarts, but I wanted the texture to softer or creamy, not stiff. The tarts aren't out in a display case, but someone will come out from the back and you can request the kind of tarts you want and how many. The Almond Puff Pastry & Cream, and the Passionfruit Pie were both pretty good though.
