So after 7 months of living in Castro Valley, I finally made time to give this place a try. Ive been told by a lot of folks that the food here is delicious and judging from the line I saw when I came in, it looks to be the case. Note, this is more of a review of the taqueria attached to the market and not the market itself, though it looked like it had all the essentials. Meat wise, it's definitely missing my favorites but in this case, it's actually a good thing because it means I'll order things I dont normally order as much. I went with a chivo (goat meat) taco and a super carne asada (grilled steak) burrito. I also picked up a bag of chicharron con carne (pork cracklings with meat) and a side of refried beans. They lady that took care of me was super nice. I love places like this because it gives me a chance to practice my Spanish. What's so awesome about this place is that they are grilling the meats right in front of you, which makes me want to order everything. I took everything home to the family they all loved it. The steak was super juicy and it might be one of the better carne asada I had. Everything tasted super fresh. The chivo taco was very moist and delicious as well. As for the chicharrons, it's chicharrons, it's almost always going to be good and the beans, were delicious as well, wish I ordered some arroz on the side to go with it. I bought the pre-packaged chicharrons by the checkout but if you want yours a little warmer, you can buy at at the meat department in the back of the store. All in all, Im definitely coming back and looking forward to trying their other meat options like al pastor and barbacoa. Given how small their work space is and how busy they might be, be prepared to give some extra time, especially if you are like me and bringing the food back home. read more

I used to live in the East Bay about 10 years ago and would always hit up this location for their cheese fries and agua fresca. The location has been consistent in delivering great food--I always get either their carnitas cheese fries or their barbacoa cheese fries with a bit of consommé (broth) added to it. Their cucumber limon agua fresca always hits, and I recommend their sandia fresca when it's available. Over the years, it's been a place where I have positive memories, as it carried my wife and me through tough days back in college. This was, and still is, a great and affordable meal that acts as both lunch and dinner due to how generous the portion is. The only caveat I have since trying the location after a few years of not stopping by is that they changed their French fries. I think right now they cut potatoes and deep-fry them, versus what it was before, where they were more "restaurant style" fries. The texture is slightly different; however, the flavor has been consistent and still tastes like what it was 10 years ago. A true hole in the wall--the only issue is parking can be quite hard to find, lol! Service is fast if you make it before peak lunch or dinner hours, haha! Love this place. read more

2 words = SHRIMP BURRITO One of my favorite spots for fajita style shrimp burritos. All those grills veggies with shrimp stuffed into a burrito... is one heavenly bite! It's my go-to when I come here. I also love their aqua fresca's = pineapple, cucumber, horchata Lines are always long and parking can be scarce because its so small. Great selection of produce and Meats! Their taqueria is AWESOME! Food are made fresh! Just found out that on Wednesday are $1.95 after paying $25 for a JR. Burrito and a Super Quesadilla. Now I know that they are only $1.95 on Wednesdays I will be bringing my kids here often rather than Taco Bell or burgers on their half day of school. Service is fast. Place is packed during lunch time but they get the job done. Not alot seating area. Also parking is difficult on certain time so plan ahead. There is also parking in the back! read more

We ordered this for a work potluck. This was a good amount for 10-12 people. Here's our review: Carne Asada - dry but flavorful Carnitas - excellent, favorite Pollo Asado - dry, needed all the toppings Black beans - good, full tray Rice - good, full tray Definitely needed more pico de gallo, guac, limes, radishes, onions. (These were not enough for 10 people who wanted to dress up their tacos) We also ordered: Churros Box (dozen) $24.99 I cut them in 3 pieces. These were a hit. Plain cheese quesadillas (dozen) $28.99 - Good size and perfect for the people who don't eat meat. They added the beans and rice to it. At the bottom of the catering package, it says it came with serving utensils. We appreciated the 2 large serving spoons, but we needed at least 2 more. They did include utensil packets and 10 large to-go containers We also got packaged fruit bowls - mango and cucumber. Both came with packets of Tahine - EXCELLENT! Called in an order for a breakfast burrito but unfortunately they hadn't started it when we arrived 15 minutes later. Once it was sorted out they made the burrito very quickly! We went with the chorizo breakfast burrito. The employees asked if we wanted potatoes and we said yes, but there weren't any potatoes added. They didn't ask if we wanted cheese or guacamole, but both were added with an additional charge each ($0.99 and $1.29 respectively). The breakfast burrito starts at 10.99 without any add-ons and it was a decent size! It was enough to split between 2 people and we were both full after. It was also really salty, which I think the potatoes could have helped balance. I would definitely try it out again when I'm in the area, maybe the bacon breakfast burrito next time! read more

My husband came here to buy burrito after picking up our kids from school because we wanted something quick to eat. We have never tried the food here and glad we did cuz the burrito is good! The meat to rice to bean ratio is perfect. My 9 years old and I like how the salsa is not spicy. Overall, the burrito is great. We would buy here again. This place is across trader Joe's. Parking sucks though. Too many stores with limited parking spot. So please be patient. This place is inside the grocery store, and the restaurant is in the right side. Food: carne asada super burrito. At $14, it was sufficiently sized. The meat had a few tough bites. Some bits of the rice were hard. I got their mild roasted green salsa on the side. If I do go again, I think it'd get the salsa in the burrito AND on the side because it was drier than I'd like. They ran out of horchata by the time I got my food (530pm-ish). It didn't come with chips either. Service: they were all friendly, fast, and the man who assembled my burrito was super efficient. Cashier was nice too. Ambiance: it's within the grocery store so you can shop and grab dinner all in the same place. It's located in a busy shopping center and parking is iffy at best. It can be tricky trying to get out onto Redwood Rd so patience and hyper awareness of moving traffic are a must. Not sure if I'd be back, to be honest. It wasn't memorable either way. read more

So previously I've had a pretty good experience getting their el pastor tacos. I even craved it for my birthday so my husband got it for my birthday but I was very disappointed with it. My husband ordered to go and picked it up and for some weird reason when I was eating it not too long after, the corn tortilla was super crumbly and soggy and would literally fall apart when I was trying to hold the taco to eat it. I couldn't even hold the taco without the tortilla breaking before i took a bite. I ended up just eating all the filling with a spoon and leave the awfully shell behind. So disappointing. Super burrito from here is MASSIVE! They really load up everything on a tortilla, and you think it won't close, but somehow they manage to fold it perfectly! I had Al Pastor super burrito, which was okay, my only complaint is that it's just oily. I will probably try carne asada next time. The burritos are always super delicious! I was craving this place for awhile and it hit the spot! It's right inside the supermarket and usually a line but it goes fast. I ordered the super chicken burrito and it definitely super loaded with everything. It had grilled chicken, guacamole, cheese, sour cream, cilantro, onions, and salsa. I love how they cook everything right in you. The chefs cook everything fresh and hot. One of the chefs noticed my burrito didn't have enough meat inside so he added more. I've been working in Castro Valley for 20 years. I went in the store once for some mangoes. Have never thought about trying their food. My friend brought lunch one day and the tacos were good. Then she brought lunch another day and they were delicious. I stopped in there today for lunch. This restaurant is a hidden gem. The restaurant and store is very clean and well-maintained.. The tacos were fire as usual. They give you plenty of everything in your tacos never feel like I'm missing anything. Five dollars each for super tacos. Fast and friendly server. El rancho is the most consistently amazing taco place in all of the east bay-- for real. Their ingredients taste good, the workers are friendly, the service is quick and the cost is reasonable. I usually get soft tacos with a variety of toppings. Their horchata is always good as well. They aren't stingy with the fillings either-- full to bursting tacos, hard to pick up they're so stuffed! You're definitely getting your money's worth at only 2.29 a taco. Sometimes when you place an order for pickup they don't put on all the toppings, so I recommend confirming at the end of the call to make sure they got it all down. Also be aware that if you have dietary restrictions that don't do well with cross contamination (celiac, vegetarianism, etc), it's not safe to eat here. I often find stray meat in my beans, and they warm the flour and corn tortillas on the same surface. There is a lot of cross contact. I've been going here for over a decade (my mom's review from 12 years ago cites my 5-star review as a child) and I've consistently enjoyed it-- through being diary free, vegetarian, and eating meat for the first time in 15 years, el rancho has always been a solid and dependable choice. read more

Supermarket - I come here mainly for fresh produce that I need quickly like cilantro, green onions or jalapeños. They also have a butcher with meat in the back. Taqueria - only tried the taco and nacho fries. Taco was good, carnitas wasn't the crispy kind. fries was ok, pastor was good. Taqueria can get busy with long lines. They cut all the meat at the same chopping block so if you're not a slob and don't eat pork, you really shouldn't eat here. They sell tamales, but they keep the pork tamales in the same container as the chicken tamales. I have brought these issues up to them because some of us care about what we put in our mouth. Bringing these issues up only seems to make them even more rude. It is filthy especially if you catch them around closing time you will see it. My favorite is the Cheese Fries with Meat. Other people I know love their burritos and their cucumber agua fresca. Although lengua is not in the list of Meat Choices, they do have it. They do run out of lengua. Service has always been good every time I've ordered here. I've gotten a catering package as well and it was a pleasant experience. There is limited open seating. At max, you can eat together with a party of 8. They limit the sitting time to 30 minutes although I do not think it is strictly enforced. read more

This may be a TMI post so just be warned ;D I have tried this place about 4 times in the last month. I like how they prepare the food in front of you. I've only ordered burritos here and you tell them want you want in it. The service is great and if there is a line it will take about 10 to 15 minutes to get your order done. They give you hefty servings and everyone is very nice. I haven't really shopped in the market area so I can't give you a review on their pricing. The parking here is a very hard so be prepared to either park on the street and if you are lucky enough to find parking in their lot, just be careful, people coming off of Grove and Redwood make it harder. The reason I gave the restaurant 3 stars is that every time I have eaten here, I get a "taco bell "reaction. Don't know if it's the quality of meat or the freshness of their products but it's a big deterrent for me. read more

I shop here for fruit and vegetables mostly. The avocados here are always ripe enough to consume that day in salad or make a nice guacamole. They have Jarrito flavors you can't get elsewhere... but... the taqueria is so good. I don't know what took me so long to try something other than a burrito here. I stopped to pick up 3 lunches for co workers and ordered the Morisqueta for them. The pork was soft and tasty; they gave me a bite to try before I ordered it. I decided to come back for dinner with my son and I got the quesabirria tacos. They were sooo good and only $4.99 a taco and were BIG. I also has a taco al pastor which was very good as well. I find the flavors here very authentic tic and better than anyplace else in the area. read more
