Been to Dr Johnson at the Castro Valley location multiple times and never had any issues. Always was attentive and friendly. She recently moved to Hayward in the foothill shopping center. We had never been to that location. The parking situation is atrocious and lots of stairs or ramp to get to the building. With a 2 year old it definitely isn't super quick and easy to navigate. I took work off to take my daughter. Our appointment was for 3:30. I am pregnant and carried her up all the stairs and took a long time to find parking. We get in to check in at 3:36 and the rude receptionist tells us that Dr Kimberly has a 5 minute grace period (which I've never been informed about and is not listed anywhere when booking the appointment) she said she would check with the doctor anyways. She took 5 minutes to check, the doctor said no and I would have to reschedule. Mind you, the office had one adult waiting in there, otherwise completely empty. Extremely disappointed and sad we will never be back. I think if you're going to have a 5 minute grace period, you should inform clients, especially at a pediatric office, especially at a brand new location that has HORRIBLE parking and lots of stairs. Would've been wonderful to know ahead of time. I am a very punctual person, I am always on time, I just had no idea there would be so many obstacles getting to the office itself, I respect people's time. Super disappointed. read more

Dr. Caren Vance is a very knowledgeable, professional, and patient pediatrician. She has seen all of my five kids. I am extremely picky when it comes to finding the right healthcare provider for myself and the whole family. Castro Valley Pediatrics has a great staff. The front desk has changed a bit. However, the ladies that are currently there are great. There are other pediatricians in the office as well and we've had the opportunity to meet with them and have treated my children when Dr. Vance was unavailable. All are professional and knowledgeable. I would recommend Castro Valley Pediatrics to anyone looking for reliable, professional, patient, and knowledgeable healthcare professionals. Writing a negative review for pediatricians office is something I never ever thought I'd do but here we are. This office lacks any ounce of professionalism and class. I don't know what happened but the girls at front desk used to be nice once. That's not what this review is about, as my dissatisfaction and disappointment as a Mother is towards the "pediatrician/medical professionals " attending to my toddler. No empathy, compassion, patience from Dr Nguyen or the other female doctor which I can't remember her name but I believe it was dr Vance (she literally walked in talking about her vacation plans) while I was sitting, waiting for 45 mins, with my toddler. The arrogance was so very uncalled for. Why do these people go into the medical profession when they have ZERO COMPASSION OR INTEREST IN HUMAN WELL BEING/PATIENTS/ILLNESS, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN?! Walking in a room, sanitizing your hands and punching away at your laptop, regurgitating my questions as responses, then sending a prescription IS NOT EQUIVALENT TO 8 YEARS OF STUDYING. What a shame to the healthcare industry. I guess it's all about money because there's no other explanation. I wouldn't bring my child here and so glad I left when I did. I still love Dr. Vance, and so do the girls. She's very down to earth, compassionate and caring, but a straight shooter. On our last visit, when she heard that Little M had become a vegetarian, Dr. Vance spent a good deal of time talking with both of us about how we can make sure she's getting everything her body needs as she approaches puberty. I'm struggling with the office logistics, though. They are really good about helping me to get the forms I need for camps and school. But they don't offer prescheduling or reminders for annual check ups, and when I leave a message to schedule a non-urgent appointment, I don't get a call back. I left two messages over two weeks with no return call. I was starting to look for a new pediatric office when I decided to just stop in and make my appointment in person.. Frustrating. I'm told they are overhauling the computer systems (or computerizing them for the first time?), so maybe I can look forward to some improvements. I do get timely call backs from the doctor when I have a medical question, and she is always thorough and accurate. I guess I'll stick with them for awhile longer. read more

We just moved here and had our first appointment with Dr. Vance this past week. She has the perfect personality for a pediatrician. She was friendly, calm, and willing to listen to all concerns. I am writing this review because this place is the WORST!! when it comes to professionalism. I called about my daughter's Physical for SCHOOL on a Tuesday she tells me their Physical is all up to date and Dr. Ross just has to sign off on them, I tell her "okay thank you!" it took 5 DAYS!! for Dr. Ross to leave a voicemail on a Sunday. a SUNDAY! then he goes on to say in the voicemail the shots and labs they need which mind you THESE PHYSICALS WERE SUPPOSEDLY UP TO DATE!! AND MY CHILD NEEDS THEM FOR SCHOOL!!! Also this is all being told to me the week of thanksgiving my children can't go back to school until all this is done I am LIVID! because now I have to wait 2 weeks before my kids can go back to school due to the incompetence of the receptionist and Dr. Ross! Piss poor customer service! I have never had these issues when my daughters were going Kaiser or at the pediatrician in Sacramento!!! Also I have twins and he told me only one of them needs an immunization THAT THEY ALREADY JUST GOT LAST MONTH! How is it only one of them needs it and not the other!!??? I have been with CVP for years, and it's always been pleasant. The office staff are social, friendly, and gets things done. The Dr's are very well informed(as should be,) takes time with their patient(s), and genuinely cares to ask questions. Same day appointments, yearly check ups, we're in and out in a timely manner. We've only waited about 10 minutes after our initial appointment(s). After all, it's a doctors office, you may get in early, on time, or minutes after (late) because they actually are doing what they're profession requires. Maybe, I'm bias, but there has yet to be any problems for me. Good job! Give them a try, they're worth it. P.S Most of the "bad" reviews are about the front desk staff. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. Do not take your child to Castro Valley Pediatrics! My just turned 1yo son developed a running nose BEFORE we went out of town. It happened shortly after receiving FOUR immunizations. He now has a cough and I explained that to the doctors. They can't see him because of his "symptoms". The advice I got from the doctor I could've literally googled myself (and she was coughing as we were on the phone). I call back again 2 days later letting them know he is worse, like they advised me to, and now they tell me he needs to have a negative COVID test. Okay, where do I get one if his own doctor refuses to see him? Oh they'll determine if it's covid related. How the heck do you determine that over the phone? I told them I don't feel comfortable getting him tested right at this moment and I get asked "why?" Why is that any of your business? I've always had iffy feelings about this pediatric office. They have horrible people skills, rush appointments, and repeat the same thing a million times. Dr. Johnston seems like she has somewhere better to be every appointment, one time I had to literally say "wait I have more questions" because she was ready to go. The nurse (who never told me her name ever) rushes out of the room after giving my son his shots because she "feels bad" for making him cry but instead you just made the situation much more scary for him. I have been taking my kids to see Dr. Yasim Carim for around 20 years (2 kids). I highly recommend Dr. Carim- she is so caring and professional yet approachable. She puts mothers at ease and listens to concerns and addresses any needs. She also treats the children with such care and understanding - really meets the needs of whatever is called for. I am sad that my youngest son is 17 and will move over to General Doctor because Dr. Carim has been so wonderful!! read more

I just had to write this review because I chose this pediatric clinic based on such great reviews. The front desk staff are unprofessional and looked confused when I asked them to speak with Dr. Vance. They did not even greet us when we came in. Nurse Priyanka was also really terrible, did not introduce herself at all (no name or title) and did not take my son's head measurement (she either forgot or something else but nobody knows why she didn't take it). Dr. Vance was defensive from the start and was sassy. She was not professional when receiving feedback and made a referral for my son to see a specialist without even receiving his medical records or getting detailed information. We had the worst experience and they seemed to be shocked that a toddler does not like getting his shots or getting measurements taken. They do not know how to work with children with special needs or toddlers in general since they have big emotions and don't know how to handle it. When I gave this feedback to Dr. Vance she told me she can't accommodate my "special requests" and as far as I know these are not special requests, just the basics I would expect at any practice. Dr. Vance was not receptive to feedback and gave a lot of attitude. We are changing pediatricians! Be warned that this clinic is not all the hype that the reviews give the impression of. read more

I'd like to update my review. It seems like the customers voices and concerns were heard and they've employed kinder upfront staff. Well, for the most part. Either way, I'm happy to see improvement. And I continue to give huge praise to our wonderful Dr. Johnston who always goes above and beyond for the care of our children. We moved about 30 minutes away and know of many good local pediatricians, but she is worth every bit of the drive. She truly cares for my kids, my own well being (one time even sent me a card postpartum to ensure I was doing ok), and keeping herself up to date on all the endless studies that go into pediatrics. Meanwhile I took the morning off, kept my girls from school to make this appointment. I said I won't be coming back and she said she didn't care that was fine. I cannot stress out how awesome the Doctors and staff are. They are one of the only private pediatrics that have not been consumed by a large organization. I know Covid has greatly impacted our everyday lives but they have exceeded my expectations in keeping staff and patients safe. They make sure to screen everyone before coming into the building and give over the phone advice if our kiddos are sick. I have seen many of these comments on here from mostly parents who maybe do not understand that these Doctors have 1000+ patients to attend and are doing there very best to care for each and everyone of them. They are always so accomodating and totally understandable if my child has covid like symptoms and cannot come in but the doctors are more than happy to provide any type of advice and go above and beyond to my children's needs. This review is based on their costumer service and speedy-ness... which they have neither. I always schedule for the first appointments in the morning to avoid a wait and STILL I end up waiting in the lobby and the rooms for an hour. My kids have no patience and it ends up always being a nightmare. The MAIN woman on the phones is evil. She always seems annoyed. I called today to get my son's medical records and she wouldn't help me and transferred me. When the voicemail picked up, it was her own voicemail. She was just trying to avoid me. Also we've been there for almost two years and when the insurance thing happened with the healthcare reform, we were switched to a new plan under blue shield. Castro Valley Pediatrics won't take our plan which is bogus. They won't take covered CA plans. And we had no choice but to switch. Main gripe is the front desk. The older lady. She is so rude. I've tried talking to her many times and she continues to be unhelpful and a flat out B*TCH! So glad we found a new doctor's office. read more

Dr. Hiramatsu is the BEST. If I could have her for my personal doctor as well. She listens very well, she addresses the questions and concerns we have, she is professional, and she makes time even if she is super swamped. As parents of a child that started with lots of difficulties we are well acquainted with many nurses and Dr.'s in the bay area. Dr. Hiramatsu also came highly regarded from them as well. If you can get her to be your Dr. you are lucky - I hear that she may not be accepting any patients as she is swamped but it is well worth a try. P.S. My son loves her. read more

We see Dr. Vance here, and have enjoyed working with her. She's patient with the kids (extra points for dealing with twins!), and patient with us parents, too. She addresses all questions knowledgeably and doesn't make you feel rushed. The nurses are kind and gentle with the kids as well. The only drawback is that wait times are long, especially once you're in the exam room. Bring lots of toys and snacks, both for the little one(s) and you! (Tip: There's a Starbucks right outside, which may come in handy before or after.) read more

This is a pretty large practice, but I have to say, it doesn't really feel like one. The longest I've waited in the waiting room was maybe 5 minutes and I was only left waiting in the exam room once, when I was squeezed in for a same-day appt., which is to be expected in that circumstance. Dr. Vance is my daughter's ped and I just adore her - I mean, I drive in from Tracy for pete's sake. She's warm, down-to-earth, has a great bedside manner, and never makes me feel rushed when I have tons of questions regarding all the things I don't know about newborns. An added bonus: They have a 24-hour advice hotline which, as a new Mom, is not only helpful, but it also makes me feel more at ease knowing that medical advice or help, is just a phone call away (I've used it a few times already). read more

Dr Hiramatsu may be wonderful, but the billing system is pretty bizarre. I was charged more for a telephone call than I would've been charged for an office visit - mind you, the phone call was to determine whether an office visit was necessary. I also was billed for an emergency visit - when I called to ask what exactly an emergency visit was, the billing department said they put that $50 charge on same day appointments in the hope the insurance will cover that charge. Wait - what I just heard was that I can't take my sick child to see his pediatrician on the same day he's actually sick, or I'll be financially penalized. I think we'll be checking out other pediatricians. read more

My first impression was that it was a clean place and spacious waiting space with activities for kids to do so that's a good thing. The only drawback was even though they had many rooms for patients, it was somewhat small after you fit a stroller in there. But all in all a wonderful experience. We just moved to the East Bay and I was trying to find a Dr that I felt comfortable with and could trust. So we made an appointment with Dr Johnston and she is wonderful at our very first meeting. My daughter was wailing into my ear the whole time when we were trying to talk so she said she was going to step out to find something to distract her. I thought she was going to come back with a toy or something but no, she came back with balloons and a balloon pump and started to work on making a flower for my daughter. I am so touched that she really went the extra step. She was also so caring and patient with all my questions and when I told her we were going overseas for a trip. She took the extra due diligence to make sure my daughter got all the vaccinations she needed. I am very happy that we chose Dr Johnston at Castro Valley Pediatrics. Where to start, I've been attending this practice ever since I was a newborn, yes a newborn lol and now that I'm officially 26 I'm sad to say goodbye to this place. That's how good this practice was to me and especially my main doctor Jerrilyn Johnston she was a complete gem to have as my dr. I felt very comfortable to talk to her and she was always very compassionate and caring. She always knew what to recommend and even helped me through my weight loss journey on what can help me she even referred me to a nutritionist. The nurses here were absolute delights I've remembered them since I was a kid and they were always compassionate and friendly I use to be sacred of getting shots as a kid but they always took my mind off of it. I attended this practice with both of my sisters through our youth and we loved coming here. Even if one of us were sick and our main dr wasn't available they would have another dr take us in to see what the problem was which was convenient. I honestly don't care if I still saw my pediatrician up til I was 26 that's how wonderful she was I will recommend her and this practice to anyone, you won't regret it. & another perk to this office is that there is a Starbucks located below the office building which is of course a score! :) thank you Dr. Johnston & Castro valley pediatrics you guys were totally awesome! I've been going to CV pediatrics since I was young. ( i miss you Mika!) When I had to find a pediatrition for my son years later I knew that I wouldn't go to any other office. Unfortantally, Mika wasn't excepting any new patients, but I knew of Doctor Willie Ross and trusted the name. He has met my standards 100% and is very hands on. My son is still young and he understands how to connect with him. Not only that but he listens and answers the questions we have as young new parents...even the silly ones :) Every visit here is an enjoyable one and I'm happy that I am able to give my son the same wonderful care that I recieved as a child! And on a lighter note, I love that when I call its still the same wonderful front desk woman thats been there for years! sorry, I forgot her name but she is great and always has a wonderful attitude! ps- their new office is beautiful! and very very clean! read more

Castro Valley Pediatrics isn't closed, they just moved to Foothill Blvd, by the Safeway. All of the doctors - Carim, Vance, Ross, Hiramatsu, etc are professional, friendly, kind, and knoweldgeable. Dr. Carim has been our pediatrician for 7 years. She is warm and reassuring. She takes time to listen and answer questions, and listen to my opinion as mom. Wow, how many doctors actually do that? Plus, the nursing staff is good at what they do, friendly, and actually remember you when you come in. They don't keep you waiting, and are good with records, payments, etc. (The sugar free lollipops are a hit with the kids too.) I think the old office was more relaxing and had less of a "clinic" feel, but the new location is ok. They could put more toys in the waiting area, but you hardly spend any time there anyway. read more

I've been here a couple of times and have had a great experience with the medical assistants and Dr. They are friendly and willing to answer questions. The front desk staff on the other had are horrible! They could really use some customer service and phone etiquette training. They are rude and inattentive. Hello idiots! When someone walks in the office you should greet them! AND...Every time I've called to schedule an appointment I am greeted with a rude "hello" (after holding for 10 minutes) as if I'm inconveniencing them. How about answering the phone with your name or greeting!? For example "thank you for calling castro valley pediatrics this is _____ how may I help you?" My daughter was a patient of Dr. Ross from birth to about a year old. While I have no real qualms about the doctors here, the front staff certainly needs to improve. It was very difficult to get a live person over the phone and when I did, they tended to be impatient and annoyed. One front office staff member had purple and blue hair and several piercings. The older woman who appears to be the primary receptionist called me "Mom" on one occasion which I thought was unprofessional. No stickers or lollypops are given out here, not even after a shot. I found that to be unusual. I didn't feel comfortable here and so I changed pediatricians. It has been over a year now since I switched doctors and I have yet to hear from CV Pediatrics to follow up with vaccinations or wellness exams. Seems they are too busy to keep track. read more

The Dr's are good but the staff and office manager are not.We gave them the benefit of the doubt but after poor service ranging from staff not taking incoming calls,keeping parents on hold for an average of 10,20,30 minutes and then possibly hanging up on you or just plain not answering at all we changed Pediatrician's. This review is based on facts including the straw that broke the camels back;Our 3yr old needed a physical form filled out by his pediatrician so we made an appointment,the staff said we did not need an appointment and to just drop off the resounded great but we physically took them to the Dr's. office to the preschool back and forth three times over a period of three days and still the paperwork was incorrect,now they want us to schedule an appointment?The sad part is this is the staff which represents a good group of Dr's. read more
