My favorite way to raise my mood after visiting the DMV or DEQ is visiting CAT. It's right across the street. The DMV makes me very grumpy. I'm not a fan. So, when I'm done I go and visit the cute furry faces of all the cats and kittens at CAT. I haven't been here in years, like maybe 4?!?!. I remember my last visit to be a smellier litter pan scent. This visit was an aromatically pleasant visit. Smelled freshly scrubbed and spic and span. I have a kitty of my own and am not interested in having any more under one roof. But boy every single kitty here was crazy adorable. They all seemed so friendly. Most of them came to the front of their cages to get my attention. The kittens are down stairs and the adults are kept upstairs. So many kittens were available. The cats must be getting busy all over Portland. LOL. I thought kitten season was over. I really took my time checking each kitty out. The stress of the DMV melted completely away. The volunteers were all super friendly and helpful. The shelter is completely non profit and runs on it's own with no Government funding. The kitties are so vey lucky to have such a wonderful shelter to care for them. There are many foster homes that take care of cats that are not quite ready for adoption. Lucky little kitties to have caring humans. I left with a bag full of toys and goodies for my own little Kitty. To pay for my good time. They have a great selection of retail items available to care for and entertain your feline. Do you know "Crazy Cat Lady" from The Simpsons? You know, the lady who screams gibberish snares and crackles while throwing around the cats that are attached to her? While that lady may be much older, I personally feel that i could take her place, at 24 years old. However, I never felt this love for cats before.... When I was six years old, I swore to myself i would never love a cat, i would never give them the time and day. heres why: I was at my aunt's, hanging out at the apartment complex when a nice looking cat walked by. "hey kitty!" you would figure a cat coming by your way, they wanna be friends right? so i tried to pet her and the stupid skank stratched my hand, and there's blood. WHAAAAAATT!!! BLOOD! oh bloody hell go die you stupid cat. since then, i never gave cats the time and day.... fast forward 18 years later, here I am at C.A.T. with my significant other, with my mind set thinking I'm not going to love none of these brats, we're not bringing any one of these brats home. Well little did I know, the way C.A.T. set up the kitties, you can actually interact with them. With all the purring and lovin' these kittens were giving me, my heart just sank. I really wanted one, ok maybe two... Somehow i ended up with a suicidal kitty. She enjoys sleeping on the edge of my sleigh bed, possibly hoping she'll fall off and die, who knows. As a first time cat owner, the staff at C.A.T. made me feel extremely comfortable with bringing the little girl home. Everyone was extremely friendly, informative, and helpful with any questions I had, as well as offering personal phone numbers in case i had any questions at 3am. We've had our baby for a few weeks now, and she is the sweetest little diva ever. we love her so much, i already want another one as a playmate. see where i'm getting at with the "crazy cat lady"? by the end of the year i'll probably have eight cats hanging out me. big heart to c.a.t. read more

I'm a bit concerned with what Sheri E. addresses with her Review, so I will just stick to the things that I saw while at CAT. I volunteered through Hands On Portland in February and then again on March 1, helping to clean the visiting rooms and that sort of thing. The staff at CAT were extremely helpful each time I had to ask where something was or where something went. Many of the cats in the Main Room are on special diets, don't get along with other cats, on medication, or just simply new to the center. The rooms are set up so there's an Aquarium one, a Jungle one, a Garden one, and my personal favorite, the Sun Room. It seemed many people were adopting on March 1st, which was nice to see. There really are SO many cats there that need loving families to take them home. If I didn't already have 3 myself, I would gladly have taken home a little female kitty both times I was there. I didn't adopt my last cat through CAT (didn't even know it existed then), but the way that cats are put together in rooms to socialize is great. I got my girl, Blue, through Animal Aid. She was in a room with at least 20 other cats and she is the best socialized cat I've ever had. These organizations seem to do the best that they can and I certainly enjoy being there for 3-4 hours, hanging out with 100 or more of the coolest cats around. If you go to adopt, be sure to give yourself MANY hours to see all of them. read more

I have never adopted from CAT, but I have fostered kittens for them numerous times through their foster program. I have found their staff to be warm, compassionate, and extremely realistic. This organization does what almost no other organization can do in this town - take on so many adult cats and kittens and keep them healthy, spayed/neutered, and adopt them out to loving, responsible homes. I don't think the public realizes the sheer cost to do this or that so many organizations don't take in adult cats in this number. Please consider a donation to CAT. The money goes directly to saving lives and hooking you up with your next lovable, well-socialized, purrfect fuzzface. Stray cats are an under-served population in most cities, with many shelters full to capacity and high euthanasia rates because the cats cannot get adequate attention to develop their scared personalities into adoptable ones. Even our county shelters work with CAT because CAT is so good at what they do. As for the staff concerns listed in previous review, consider this: CAT's team sees *everything* that happens in all kinds of adoptive situations. Most cat owners fortunately never have to deal with the issues that CAT sees in volume - so when they make suggestions about how best to care for your cat, whether it's to keep it indoors, properly address behavioral issues, or provide vaccinations or deworming on a specific schedule, it's not because they want to make you feel poorly about your cat ownership skills. It's because they know what it takes to keep these cats from becoming sick, being returned, rehomed, dumped, or dying horrible deaths outside. That's a really rough job to try to convey this to potential cat owners day in and day out and maintain positivity. I've never really considered myself a Cat person, but recently, I met some amazing ones I came to the conclusion I needed to add one to a household of me and a large Lab. I had a few needs to be met; I wanted a Cat that wouldn't run and hide the whole day, draw blood when I tried to rub its belly, or make me sneeze 24/7. I wasn't impressed with Hannah the Pet Society, a place I consider an overpriced food club and pet insurance agency. Google led a friend and I to C.A.T. in Sherwood. The setup there is pretty nice, they have a bunch of enclosed rooms with cats you can go play with, or you can choose to interact with any in the kennels, and there are dozens to choose from. The adoption fees are very fair; from $25 for adult cats that have been there more than a few months, to $125 or so for Kittens. The staff does their best to answer any questions you have to find the perfect cat for your needs. Keywords on each cage clue you into the cat's personality. And they never want to send you home with a cat that hasn't been made as healthy as possible by their veterinarians. I brought my cat back a week after I adopted her dental work, at no expense to myself. She's a wonderful affectionate cat, and I appreciate Cat Adoption Team. read more

I got my second kitten "ash" there last year for christmas. the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. it was a very simple and cheap adoption process. ash was already neutered, micro chipped and had all his shots. they even sent him home with an adorable pink blanky with skulls on it! he is so sweet and well behaved, i love him so much! read more

I've had a bunch of different experiences here. Most of them were fine. One of my kiddos is from CAT (though his adoption experience was much easier because we got him through their partnership with Petsmart), and I had good experiences with the people down in the shop downstairs (let me buy my cats' favorite toy last minute instead of turning me away). The facility is clean and there are free roaming rooms. I'm assuming the cats in individual cages are being transitioned into shelter life of maybe don't get along with the other cats. But I've had negative experiences too. I've been told one thing--that I would be helped by one individual--, only be ignored for an hour or more until the shelter closed (I had driven all the way from Eugene to this shelter because I enjoyed CAT so much). The individual that told me this seemed to disappear and leave only one volunteer to deal with a rude adopter, and myself. I honestly think these negative experiences were a result of low staff (not the shelter's fault). For the most part, a good shelter. But just make sure to be patient and give yourself lots of time to look as it may take some time to get a volunteer to help you with adoption read more

Cat adoption team is the worst place to adopt a kitty, I tyred once but to no avail it didn't happen, I went there to get acquainted with a kitty and I did, it went very well, I had to leave to go to work but I had told them that I would be there the next day (friday) before they even opened, I was there like I promised, I had told them I would like to adopt Folly but the said she wasn't here I asked why not, I told them I on Thursday I be there friday morning before they were opened, I was told they took her to Pet Smart in Tigard, I could there to adopt her but I couldn't, Would be was to far from where I lived, time was a issue. I got the feeling that the manager didn't want me to adopt her, the only thing I could have thought of was that she either had a friend that was going to adopt her or she didn't think I would take good care of her which was far from the truth. If that was the case is all she had to to is aske me if I had a vet and who and give them a call. Its really sad how they dont take good care of there animals and they also have the worst customer service ever, I will never go there for anything again, its been almost 10 since that day. We didn't actually get our little fur monster from the Sherwood location, but we did adopt through CAT at PetSmart. My mom had adopted her cat at the Sherwood facility, which is how I learned about the organization. She told me (as previous reviewers mention) how they allow the cats to socialize and how they put you in a room alone with the cat to get a feel for it. Even the cats that are kept in the little side room at PetSmart are treated very well. They only allow them to stay at PetSmart for so long (where they are mostly kept in separate cages) before giving them a break from that environment and taking them back Sherwood for a while. One thing that people might be interested to know if that adopters are required to keep the cats indoors. That may be an issue for some, but since we live in the city, it made sense for us. read more

This group is awesome. They are one of the few true no-kill cat shelters. They do get full, so it's sad that on some occasions they may have to turn kitties away, but they do a good job. Unlike the Humane Society, they do not throw a bunch of kittens into a room for adoption. Sure it's cute, but diseases run rampant with kittens and there's no better way to spread them than having a cattery play room. I adopted a kitten from the Humane Society once and the kitty died weeks later from some untreatable disease. They really didn't care much when I called and told them about it. I've adopted 2 kitties from CAT. Both alive and well. One is now nearly 5 years old and the other is almost 1. I have also participated in the foster program through CAT and it was a great experience. They do try hard to save the kitties and I was able to place 3 kittens into good homes while also raising a bottle baby through the foster program. I try to make cash or goods donations when I can. A great organization worth supporting. Their consultations are smart, and their adoption process is smart as well. It's all in place to help ensure you don't get a sick kitty or spread sickness. Do the good thing and support this organization any way you can. There's lots of great older kitties there since they are a no kill shelter. Kittens always get adopted quicker, which is great, but it's sad to see all the older ones. I'd adopt them all if I could. read more

We have adopted two cats from Cat Adoption Team and will go back when we wish to adopt another cat. They take good care of the animals - it is a shelter, but the ones in the free-roaming rooms have a fair amount of comfort, and even the ones in cages have every comfort they can be given while that restricted. The staff are wonderful, and they are very good at both matching you with an appropriate cat, and giving you the advice you need to integrate that cat to your household. Both cats we adopted have been very very much like we were told they would be in our household. I know that such prediction is an art, so some of that is luck - I don't expect 100% - but so far I have gotten it and that does influence my impression! When my father passed away, I brought his two cats home. At that time I didn't have any cats in my house but I called CAT for advice on integrating two indoor-outdoor country cats into an indoor-only suburban house, with one of the cats young enough that she only sort of knew me, as a visitor (the other one grew up in our house before I left for college, and remembered me better). The volunteer sounded relieved that I wasn't asking them to take the cats in (it was kitten season and I'm sure there's a waiting list at any time any way) - and spent a good several minutes going over ways I could ease the transition for them, and also made sure I knew I could call back if I needed more advice. They also run a cat-food bank for cat owners who need some help feeding their pets. I haven't used that service so I can't speak to how it is for the people who need it - but I am glad that it exists at all. read more

I love this place and their mission. I adopted a little sweetheart here less than a week ago and everything has gone very smoothly in her transition. They fed her well and made her as comfortable as they could and that has really helped in her recovery from what I can only imagine was pretty consistant abuse. They picked her up as a stray so there's really no record of what happened, but any cat that hides every time you start to stand up has been through some shit. I used to come here all the time just to pet cats, and now I have the ability to take one home and I am so grateful to CAT for bringing her to me. I found them to be professional, courteous, and very flexible. They allowed my then-6-year-old daughter to take classes with me and treated her with dignity and took her seriously. All of our questions were answered by friendly people who knew what they were doing. A few reviewers mentioned "uppity staff," and that's unfortunate that anyone made condescending remarks and gave a bad impression. We've never encountered anything except for positive attitudes and a friendly, clean, contientious organization at CAT. I know several people who have adopted there and been happy. We got our two male kittens fixed here along with all the vaccinations and stuff they offer. Although the check in process in the morning was a little hectic, overall the process was great. The amount of money we saved by going here really helped us out. They offer this service because they love animals and it really shows. Our boys came out for surgery like nothing even happened. The only weird thing was one of them had some whiskers that were cut, which was very strange to find. I wish someone would have mentioned to us why his whiskers were cut. Even our home vet wasn't sure why that happened. But overall if you're looking for an affordable place to get your kitties chipped, fixed, vaccinated, and dewormed, I would recommend this place. I am a volunteer at Cat Adoption Team. I have been volunteering here for a few months now and I have to say that it is a lovely place. The cats are truly loved and cared for here. Theres roaming/play rooms with tv's playing nature videos 24/7! The staff and volunteers are all very friendly and welcoming. They also keep the shelter extremely clean, which I feel is very important for the health of the cats, and its nice for guests and volunteers. They are no kill. Run purely off donations and fundraising. Another thing that I really love is that they arent just trying to push cats out the door to find homes fast. They take the time to find the RIGHT home. When the timing is right to add another feline friend to our family I dont have far to look. ^-^ read more

If I ever have the ability to die an old woman with millions, I will leave it all to Cat Adoption Team (bonus awesomeness if I get to really piss off some crappy relatives in the process). We have gotten two kitties from their Cat Adoption Days, and each was a pleasant and joyful experience we smile about every time we think of it. Talk with any of the staff or volunteers and you'll see that not only do they LOVE cats, they KNOW cats. Their knowledge will help navigate you through questions and concerns, and they remain honest and open over what will and will not work. They're not going to push a cat into your home just to get it out of the shelter. Our first baby kitty died at a year old from a tumor, and when we went back to find a new outlet for our love, I started crying like a lunatic in the middle of PetSmart. Within moments I was surrounded by at least 3 other CAT people, crying and hugging me with complete empathy. You just don't find that anywhere else. CAT is no-kill and no-cruelty. They educate pet owners on the huge negatives of declawing, along with letting your kitty be an "outdoor cat." This was very helpful, since we hadn't considered these issues before. I'm glad they make a point to let everyone know why they take the stances they do. Reasonable fees, a wonderful organization and the cutest kitties! I better rev up my 401K. I was very happy with our adoption experience at CAT. When you first arrive, you are given a personality test (which you can also take online). The results determine what kind of cat will be the best match for you. All the cats have been given one of 9 personality types in order of shy to ougoing and everything in between. We scored in the "sidekick" personality, and our little sidekick has been a perfect fit. I see a lot of complaints about the staff. Keep in mind that CAT is a non-profit so it's entirely run by volunteers. Although I dind't get anyone crazy, I can definitely agree that the staff are hard-core kitty fans and will school you. But I tried to view their intensity as passion. I was not super keen on a lady holding our hand through every step of the proccess (it was a little intense), but she definitely knew her shit and did teach us some important things. Also, don't expect to just stop by and get a cat. This is a 3 to 5 hour event. I definitely agree with the CAT ladies on this one, adopting shouldn't be a rash decision. They have so many adorable cats and a bunch of play rooms to watch them in actoin. We got our kitty for a little over $100. The rate is based on age and health factors. Also included in that fee were her spay and full vaccinations, which we took her back to complete a month later. There is a little store downstairs that sells food, litter, toys and everything you need to start a life with your new cat. Have fun! read more

We got our cat here a few years ago and he is the sweetest thing ever. Their foster families are so amazing and right went we got him we could tell he was well loved. The facilities are clean and the cats have a good amount of space to run around. The people are friendly and so grateful when you adopt a cat so you can really tell they care about their animals. I adopted from CAT and also brought home a sneezing kitty with tape worms. The staff is just okay. Not a lot of follow up or attention to detail. I felt sorry for the cats in their small cages and the cages the kittens were in Very poorly laid out facility. BUT please adopt there because those cats need homes and to need to get out of there. My cat the first night I got her, played and played and was so happy. Some have been there a long time and long for a good home where the can move around and play. I got a cat from the Cat Adoption Team in 2005 and called them to see what the process of finding another family for the poor cat would be (She seemed unhappy and I hoped someone who just needed a single cat would take her). The woman I spoke to "relinquish" my rights as a kitty parent was so rude and made me feel so guilty about even considering the idea of giving the cat back made me cry! She was incredibly rude. I understand that they want people to keep the cats they adopt but no wonder there are so many cats abandoned when they treat you like that!!! I did end up keeping the kitty and hope she stays happy with me, there is no way I would recommend the Cat Adoption Team after the third degree they give you. read more

This shelter takes excellent care of it's kitties and I believe that they have a great cause. However, the staff is extremely snotty and rude. I live nearby and have been to the shelter on multiple occasions but the past few times I have visited the shelter have been such bad experiences that I don't think I'll be back. They staff will talk down to you and assume you are a terrible kitty parent if you don't tell them exactly what they want to hear. I think the Cat Adoption Team is a great place to find your little furry friend a furrever home. We have had luck here both times we have come in. We got both older cats and the first old man we recently had to put down due to his age and some health issues :( but he was the best adoption experience our family has had. He was a shy little old man until my sister walked into petsmart(sister company for adoptions) and he just wouldn't let her leave without him. He was by far the best guy, he was old but in decent health, and we got 7 long years with that handsome guy. Due to such a great experience the first time we went back and got another older male cat. So far so good. He's adapted well to the new furrever home and is comfy and plays and snuggles, Sylvester was a favorite at the shelter and we are so lucky to have gotten him and now understand why he was a favorite. I'd say the people at CATS are doing very well at taking care of these shelter animals. And after reading some of these bad experiences I'm just surprised to hear some of the things they had issues with such as ring worm issues and such, but I think people forget when you're adopting from a shelter and not getting kittens from a personal home, these things might happen. It's terrible but fix the issue and move on. Animals get things often specially if you adopt from a shelter and they were wild or strays and came from out of state. But whenever this team gets a kitten or a cat they do their best to take care of them and with the adoption fees you get all sorts of things, chips that include as much info as possible, free bag of food, they're always spayed or neutered, ears are cleaned, teeth are checked. I'd say this is a great spot to go and look for your next furrever friend read more

Since I moved to Portland last september (9/1/13) I adopted two cats (Tess and Neut) through CAT. The process was a bit obnoxious, with their "Meet Your Match" thingee (I like cats. Pretty much all cats. My one and only requirement is the cat not be super drooly.) Visiting the shelter was a bit heart-breaking. It was quite full, and many of the cats had been there for several months. The first day I visited, I spent most of the day there, getting to know the cats, and most of the people that stopped in either knew nothing at all about cats, or else wanted a specific perfect cat (that doesn't actually exist.) It must be very frustrating to work there, and is probably why the staff was tripping over each other to help me find my "Forever match", Both cats I adopted were having problems at the shelter, which is part of the reason I adopted them. Tess had Catflu, and had to be held for a week after I finalized, but she came home happy and healthy. Neut actually needed major dental surgery when I adopted him, which CAT did about 2 weeks after I brought him home, for free. My cats are great, and I am quite pleased with the service I got from CAT. read more

They had this sign that said "Top 10 Reasons to Adopt a Black Cat" (because apparently its difficult to adopt out black cats) and number 10 was "they don't care what color you are!" I've heard many things about CAT but with my experience, I am completely disappointed. I got a kitten in August and as SOON as I brought her home I could hear a rattling when she would breathe. Now I know that they can get a little cold when they are taken to a home, BUT she was only at my house for 30 mins before I noticed the rattling. I took her in to the shelters clinic a few days later, and the vet that helped me was very rude and short with me. They gave her meds and she got better, but once it started to come back I called them to see if they could help me again, considering they gave her to me like that, but I didn't even get a call back. I emailed my "cat counselor" but she informed me that they wouldn't help me anymore because I have had her "pasted the 14 day mark". Then she proceeded to tell me what a responsibility cats are, as if I haven't had one my whole life, in a very rude and condescending way. I am very upset with how I was treated. Basically, they sold me a sick kitten but since I have had her past the 14 days, they do not care to help me anymore. Seems to me like if you really care about the animals you're finding homes for, you would do what you can to help, ESPECIALLY when you give someone a cat that is already sick. I will NOT be returning to CAT, ever. read more

Debbie (I believe that was her name) was so helpful and you could tell she really cared about all of the cats there. I first found out about this place cause an old friend of mine dropped cats off with me and never came back to get them and i couldn't keep them on a perm. basis :( so they took them for a really low donation without a bunch of harassment like the humane society tried to do with me. I then returned last year to adopt a cat, and i got amazing service from the staff and an even better cat! I have had no problems with him and we're going on a year of having him next month... if i ever wanted to adopt another cat i would def. return to them before i would even think of going anywhere else. :) read more

We got our kitty here. It's a no kill shelter and is full of cats of all ages and breeds. I highly rec adopting here! Our cat is great!

My fiance and I got our little Chubalub Chance from the CAT Adoption Team and we couldn't be more happier. The team that works there are wonderful and patient. We fell in love with Chance the second we walked through the door and saw him. They let us hold him to see how he would react and he purred in both of our arms. That was it for us. We didn't want to be too hasty so went and walked around for a little bit to keep an open mind but we ended up getting Chance after everything was said and done. The wonderful lady that helped us get our paperwork going was very helpful and gave us great information on how to make our cat the most comfortable and to improve our relationship with him. I feel if it wasn't for her advice we wouldn't be so close to chance as we are today. He trusts and loves us so explicitly and us to him as well. read more

We have adopted two kittens from CAT. Unfortunately, one had worms, which was awful, but that's not always preventable in a shelter environment. The staff is helpful and if you're looking for a pet this is a great place. There are always plenty of cats and kittens to choose from, and having them already neutered and with a basic check up when adopted is very helpful too. read more
