That being said, don't come to this cafe to actually get work done!! There aren't any outlets and not too much seating availability. I have never been to a place where a cup of tea is market price. That is bizarre to me. I also searched high and low for outlets, and there were none to be found. The coffee was burned and bitter, and for $3, the amount of coffee was pretty appalling. I would have been beaten with a club if I'd tried to serve that in the Pacific Northwest. They don't seem to care if you hang out for a while, so that is a plus. Also parking is fairly easy, with a small lot. But between the weird pricing on tea and the lack of volume, you'd be better off finding standard price, better coffee elsewhere. read more

Personally, I enjoy milk & sugar with a side of coffee so I always go for a latte. The lattes always taste water down and the flavors are subtle which can be nice sometimes. Their chai latte tastes like milk and water with a slight hint of chai. Not my favorite. Fyi: Seating is limited and they are not pet friendly! Not a problem just putting it out there. read more

Another great breakfast and coffee place with lovely ambiance for working and forgetting about the world. I walked in nice and early, since it is summer, and I feared work-free summer takeover of the small coffee shop. I walked in and ordered a butter croissant as well as a soy latte. I was a tiny bit disappointed that my latte did not have a cute bear on it! Oh well, I am an adult and don't need cute images of bears in my coffee to enjoy it. The coffee was actually quite good and had just the right amount of strength to get me going in the morning. My croissant was nothing to write home about, but it fed me and that's what matters. I think this is a great place for introverts. There are tables and benches that face a wall. This allows for one to work, read, grade papers, write, etc while staring at the wall full of neat paintings rather than being overwhelmed by people in the background ordering coffee or having a conversation you wish not to put a face to. Hipster meter was off the roof! I just came here for a cup of cappuccino, almond croissant, and a place to read my book. Well, I was able to do two of those things! The cappuccino was great. Even though I'm a guy, the male barista still made a heart shape on my milk foam. I would have accepted a panda face, mouse, cat, or a puppy, but a heart shape is still acceptable. They don't discriminate! The almond croissant was also on par with the cappuccino. Nothing goes better than the two together (except Oreos and milk)! It was soft, buttery, fluffy, and layered just like a croissant should be! The inside was filled with this sweet almond custard filling and the outside was topped with sliced almonds. It was very sweet, but balanced well with the cappuccino (no sugar added). Unfortunately the place was too crowded and very loud when I went. I felt like I was taking up precious seating space and should leave. All of this made me feel stressed. I didn't stay very long and I'm sure someone took my seat when I left. Overall, Catalina offers good coffee and croissants, but the environment was not for me. The noise level does not promote a comfortable place for conversations or studying. read more

Catalina is a cozy little place serving up tasty, afforable coffee (the mocha latte and chai latte were both delicious and artfully decorated) and pastries (tried the almond croissant; it was dry and the frangipane center was crumbly). I truly appreciated how they don't charge extra for substitutions (eg: I got soy milk instead of regular milk in my chai latte at no cost). It's the perfect place to catch up with friends but sadly not for studying. No outlets, wifi, and really dim lighting make this place less than ideal for cracking open your books (though if you want a place that will keep you from getting distracted with the internet then this place is perfect!). The baristas were super friendly, ambient music was great, the bathrooms were clean, parking lot is decently sized, and there's a well-stocked Salvation Army across the street that's fun to browse through. read more

Initially, we were super excited to try this place because my friend said it was her favorite. Finding the place was a bit of a struggle since it was housed in between a series of random business blocks and abandoned buildings, but we managed. We came on a Sunday afternoon so the place was crowded, which I am usually not a fan of, but I guess that means they're doing well. The lattés we ordered were good, but they didn't seem particularly distinctive to me. Maybe I'm just not cultured enough. It could also have been because I was absolutely starving and wanted real food and not the few expensive baked goods they were offering. Some of the other reviews of Catalina are laughable, this cafe is truly amazing. The quality of coffee, the detail in preparations, the baristas, it nails it. Catalina doesn't have wifi, it does't have outlets, it isn't looking to compete with La Madeline. Instead what they offer is carefully crafted espresso with precision brewing technique. I stop by here once or twice a week, usually ordering a single-origin Macchiato or Flat White. Both of the drinks taste amazing, the single-origin espressos never cease to blow me away. If you want quality coffee at reasonable prices in an environment to meet friends, read a book, or simply relax than this is the best bet. It reminds me of what coffee cafes must have been before the time of free wifi and outlets, almost like a neighborhood bar where you can see familiar faces and meet for long talks. I would highly recommend talking to the baristas about what to order, they can pair you to the right coffee. If you have never had, or ever heard, of a single-origin coffee than you may want to start there. It is going to taste very different and a lot better than any other coffee that you have had before. Stopped in this little shop for the first time today for a quick mid afternoon coffee break. I ordered an espresso- columbian and costa rican blend and took a seat at one of the cute little wooden tables inside. My espresso order came on a platter with a small glass of tonic water and looked quite fancy! The espresso was delicious with some fruity notes and minimal bitterness. Thumbs up! Catalina is quite cozy with only a dozen or so seats but this adds to the charm of this spot. There's not much lighting so I probably wouldn't come here to try to get work done. Service (4/5): The workers were very sweet and helped answer my questions even though there was a long line of people waiting. Ambiance (3/5): The place is a lot smaller than what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed the interior of this cafe. They provide big and small tables for you to sit (if you're lucky), but be aware that they do not provide outlets or wifi to customers. I was a bit bummed about this because I enjoy coming to coffee shops to do work, but its understandable. Lavender latte (4/5): I really enjoyed my latte. Favorite coffee place I've gone to in Houston! Super was super friendly and quick and the coffee was excellent! I went twice in 3 days and got the iced lavender latte both times. My favorite part is their compostable straws! I love stores that are taking the initiative to making the world greener! I also tried their vegetable danish and it is delish! Definitely better just to eat it was soon as you get it even though it is cold. I think it'd taste even better toasted if you have access to an oven! Coolest thing about Catalina? The building and decor. It's a very cool, industrial space. The coffee was good, but in a city with lots of great coffee shops, the coffee wasn't better than lots of others I've been to. And it's CROWDED. We were there on a Sunday morning, and there were a bunch of men on bike shorts that were grabbing coffee before getting back on their bikes. The tables were mostly full, and there was no place to stand while waiting for our coffee! They have a decent sized parking lot,, which is nice. Cool place. I came by on a Saturday morning to meet up with some friends. I originally had a hard time parking - the two parking lots behind them were filled with cars and street parking seemed non-existent with 'no parking' street signs everywhere. Eventually, cars began to leave and spots cleared up. Walking in from the back is pretty cool and the line stays pretty long. The size of the shop is decent, not particularly large, and definitely community style. We needed a table for the 4 of us and shared a table with a mother and her toddler. I got a coffee off their seasonal menu - their salted caramel latte. It was pretty good, they fill their lattes to the rim so be slow & steady when bringing it to your table! The staff here is great! I felt like a welcomed old friend even though it was my first time there. I went right when it opened on a Sunday morning and had no issue parking or finding seating, but those who arrived about 30 minutes later did have to wait for seats to free up. I enjoyed one of the danishes from their wide selection of pastries and decided to play it safe with a Flat White. While this is a great place to relax, chat, or read, be aware that it's not exactly laptop friendly. There's no WiFi or easily accessible outlets to be found. I have a confession to make: I married a coffee snob. I didn't know how picky my husband was until he Began refusing to go to the most popular coffee places in the states (take a wild guess). He's the guy that asks about the scents and the type of bean and where it comes from. I thought you just take the bean (because they appear the same to me), grind it, add water, mix it with sugars and other stuff and BAM -- coffee. Nope, he nerds out and spends numerous minutes every day with our French press concocting new bean to water ratios for various beans. One day he claims that he hasn't found what he was looking for and moped around the house like a kid who was told Santa wasn't real. I then tell him we can go get coffee at Catalina. I don't speak coffee, but the crew here does. And when hubby came in wanting to nerd out on things pertaining to coffee, there were people who could join him in his enthusiasm--while I stood there confused. But alas, he found a new bean--temporada. A whole bean espresso. I don't have the heart in me to tell him it's seasonal. But at least I know where to go to find a new blend he may like. When we go, we buy a cup of coffee and also a bag for us to make at home. He now has a friend he can talk coffee to, because I lack in that department--and I'm okay with that! For those that like good quality coffee, this is your place. The people are friendly and helpful, and the coffee bean meets my crazy husband's high standards.
