Yesterday my family gathered for a Christmas celebration at Catawba Fish Camp. Now it was my first time going and we had a pre-set menu. We had shrimp, flounder, perch, french fries and slaw. The food was good but in my opinion it needed more seasoning. Our server was awesome and pleasant to the whole group. They have wonderful space for groups. And it was very clean, It's definitely family friendly and they even have a candy section for the kids or for the adult kid. I will go back and order off of the menu just to explore what else they have to offer. read more

We tried this restaurant as they were hosting a gathering for Christian Tours. The building is bright and clean and very spacious inside, the service was perfect friendly and full of southern hospitality. The fried fish plater was good, but the broiled scallops were AMAZING. Had lunch here with a large group of people. Hushpuppies and coleslaw brought to the table. Hushpuppies good but greasy to the touch. 2 types of coleslaw: traditional sweet and horseradish based not sweet but both tasted ok. We had a fantastic accomadating waitress. In my opinion food was just mediocre. My broiled flounder tasted prior frozen, it wasn't tender or moist. However those who had fried flounder or other fried fish , seemed to like theirs. Almost all at our table ordered fried shrimp fried fish or other fried seafood. Cocktail sauce, tarter sauce and ketchup also on the table. Prices reasonable for what one ordered. Atmosphere basic comfortable. Food came out hot and plated nicely. However I have had better coleslaw , hushpuppies and broiled fish elsewhere. I also wished there would have been healthier choices such as seafood based green salads, or perhaps soups or more vegetables as sides. Just my humble opinion. read more

this place sucks ! I can't believe they serve you this poor plate for the money. I was in there Saturday night. not crowded service was fine but food was unacceptable !!! the fries was soaked in grease. small burnt dripping and the calabash was very small amount serving flounder don't know what it was, cheap grade oysters was junk , no way devil crab was good big shrimp good ,but only got 3 Ale fine and puppies good and hot thumb up for them. Tea also was good but ordered a lot of ice guess the girl was gonna do it her way so she wouldn't have to walk much. Piss poor place . i want be back. Service and ambiance are GREAT! The problem is the food. The food was served hot but I was so disappointed after the first bite. My fish was tough and had NO flavor. The shrimp was also tasteless!! My fries, which were underneath the food, were soggy. Slaw was OK. This was absolutely the worst fish camp I've ever been to. Also, this is more personal preference...but I like my tater sauce with a chill...theirs is on the table in a squeeze bottle, at room temperature and it's sweet . You want great fish...go to Capt. This place is awesome. A true old timey style SOUTHERN FISH CAMP, with great food, excellent service, affordable prices and a pleasant atmosphere. They have both types of old timey southern cole slaw and hush puppies. It's a locals paradise, which is a rarity these days. Went with a party of 6 adults on a Saturday afternoon. Service was prompt and friendly. Like mentioned in a previous review, the French fries were greasy and unappealing, but the rest of our food was delicious. Flounder, crab, shrimp, hush puppies, onion rings, all done very well and served super fast. Our drinks stayed full and I thought the portion sizes were adequate for the money. This was my first time going to a fish camp, and I really enjoyed the environment. The food (I ordered boiled shrimp), was okay, but I really enjoyed the hush puppies! The only issue i have which i hope is an honest mistake is the 2 extra dollars that was added to my debit card after it was clearly shown on the bill what the tip was and the total charge. Haven't been here in years since it's so far away from us . Happened to be in the area today and decided to stop in ,they have completely updated everything and it's like brand new inside. Unfortunately the food was average at best we had broiled white fish and boiled tilapia as well as fried salt and pepper catfish not much flavour at all on the catfish and the boiled fish seemed to be just sprinkled with old bay wasn't great . For $40 I can think of a dozen or more places in the area that would have e been better. Really wanted to like it but unfortunately I don't think I'll return again . read more

The waitress was so incredibly kind and that's why I give the restaurant 2 stars. The hush puppies are uneventful, coleslaw tasty, but what they did to that fish was horrible. The fish was soggy, floppy, disgusting mess. We tried it, didn't like it, and won't be back. read more

First time coming to this place and the last. When the food was served to us the first thing I saw was how greasy the fries were. It's like they didn't even drain them from the grease, it was absolutely disgusting. They were inedible mush under the seafood platter. The flounder was chewy, not flaky at all. Also do not be deceived, the menu states the seafood platter comes with "fantail shrimp" when in fact it comes with THREE jumbo shrimp. What a rip off for over $19. The hushpuppies weren't good, the tartar sauce is left on the table at room temperature and the ketchup is like water. No music in the establishment so it was dead silent with the noises of people eating around us. I think we were in and out in about 20 mins. I was driving by and called them on phone about costs and menu items. So, I decided to turn around and dine in. As I walked in, I was greeted by a nice friendly cashier and hostess. She said I could sit down any where. I decided upon the catfish plate which includes frie catfish filets, hush puppies, French fries and two different kinds of slaw. I have had better hush puppies. They have no onions in the hush puppies and although that would have made them taste better, I didn't like the breading. I have had better catfish too. Their fries were ok but I have had better to across the South. Their sweet tea was great and their coleslaw was ok. My waitress was friendly and she took care of me. As a matter of fact, I got my order within a 5 minutes which was pretty fast. She kept my drink full of sweet tea and even left a pitcher on my table. Car hop kept a 20% tip when returning the change from the cash payment without asking or explaining the short change. I gave her a moment to address the discrepancy and offered a tip regardless. She hastily returned inside with the additional tip offer plus the money she wrongfully kept from the short change. Thanks for the lack of integrity and dishonesty. BTW, glad I chose not to allow her to take a card payment out of sight, which is the reason for the cash. Amazingly people never cease to disappoint. Ate there for the first time today. Nice place inside. If you don't like fish the menu is very limited. You pretty much get to have chicken cooked a few different ways. No burgers or hotdogs. They do have a kids menu. Waitress was very nice and service was quick. We both got scallops which were very good and the amount was large. The problem was the fries and onion rings were loaded with grease, and we had to blot them with our napkins. When I worked at my friends seafood restaurant in New England he would filter his oil once a day around 4PM with a special machine and completely change the oil once a week. The results were that the fries were never stuck all together and the oil was never visible on the fries and rings. For this reason and the very limited menu which I stated earlier, we would not return. P.S. Hushpuppies were the worst I've had since moving to SC. read more

20 years ago it was my favorite fish camp, today not so much, the food has completely changed, the way the fish is cooked, breading on the fish, the size of the fish, I drove one hour to eat there, I will be at the wagon wheel restaurant right up the road from now on, it was packed when we road right by it! read more

Been going here since before I was born so I grew up eating here and for 40 years it was the best food ever. When it changed ownership the food quality and quantity went down remarkably. So sad too for a restaurant that used to be everyone's favorite. And yes they watch everyone like a hawk to make sure you're not taking food out. Feels weird to be watched while ya eat but then again this is since new ownership. Gotta save the hush puppies. Lol The slaw is the best I've ever had. They have two kinds. The vinegar and the regular. I love both but the vinegar one is my favorite. The hush puppies used to be awesome but not anymore. The size is smaller and they don't taste the same as they did for 40 years. Not sure if they didn't share the old recipes with the new owner or the new owner changed it to cheaper ingredients. Their was only a few people in there when we went in on a Saturday afternoon This place used to have lines out the door as soon as they opened the doors every day and the lines continued till they closed every night. They are only open a few days a week. Food is solid, the hush puppies and fries are usually well cooked and tasty. The portions are large and most fried items are crispy and light. Lunch or dinner there's options for a sit down meal or take out. Service is always friendly and quick, no issues there. @53 years of age.... I can say I've ate at a lot of so called Fish Camps! This one in particular has been a spot of Family gatherings for the Beck Clan since I was born! So, how do you find this place? Either you are lost on a back road, or in my case on Hwy 9 . In the distance it looks like you are coming up on a casino, but off the road lies a large building with a pretty large parking lot. Not being from the area, I can only imagine that everyone in town must eat here. I say this as they have a sign for senior citizens over 65yo a 5% discount with cash or checks.......( what restaurant still takes checks?) The menu is somewhat limited to fish and chicken. The hush puppies are pretty bland ( no onions) and taste of yellow corn meal only. They have 2 cole-slaws available - one sweet and one bitter I had the calabash shrimp...all you can eat, and the wife had the grilled chicken. In fact the grilled chicken was the surprise hit of the night. One chicken breast - check , Grill marks - check, moist and tender - check, flavorful - check in fact, the chicken was better than most other restaurants grilled chicken, and since everything here seems to be fried, that was a very pleasant surprise. The calabash shrimp was very tasty, and are brought to you in a small french fry tray like manner. Apparently by reading the signs about food containers hanging from the ceiling, I was overly cautious that I was being watched like a hawk. It must be apparent that people seem to sneak containers in for the all you can eat menu items. I only had one refill as I did seem to become self aware that my wife was also trying the shrimp off my plate. So what I knew going in was that I would probably never return, but wow, other people and all you can eat meals just make it unfortunate that others must suffer by being watched by a crowd of employees by the tea stand seeing if you are sneaking food into a pocket or container. I have been coming here for decades as I grew up in Lancaster. Since I now live quite far away I only get here a few times a year. Thankfully, It doesn't seem like much has changed. Tonight we brought another couple with us who had never been here before. Our waitress suggested the seafood platter and all four of us ordered the platter but with our favorites, some had broiled some had fried. The platters came with slaw, fries or baked potato and hush puppies. We all thoroughly enjoyed the platters. The food was delicious. There wasn't a thing I would have changed. Before we even finished eating, my friends were planning a return visit and what they would order next time. This is a relaxed down home good food casual place. This family friendly restaurant is clean and organized. The food is served up piping hot and with a smile. They have been in business for over 40 years and it shows! If you are not a seafood lover they do have chicken on menu too! I chose Calabash Shrimp and my friend chose Fried Flounder. Both were fried with a simple corn meal batter that did not take away from the flavor of the meat. Broiled options are available too! They also serve corn meal hushpuppies that are simple but, oh so tasty! You can also choose between sweet or sour coleslaw. It is obvious they aim to please. One last thing, this place is huge! Yes, I rated it one star. Why you might be asking. If you look closely in the photos you can see the shrimp hasn't been deveined. Why would you need to ask to get your shrimp deveined you ask? Well i dont know but it says it comes deveined. The waitress took our food back and said "I can get you some more to pick through" Like she knew they had veins still in it. Now the onion rings personally i did not try the onion rings but my mother said they were very soggy and bad. I do not recommend going here. read more

Took my mother n law here for her birthday yesterday and I was so disappointed in the food. I got the grill chicken and it was not all thhe way done. They don't offer a variety of sides instead of hush puppies and cole slaw. When I asked to substitute the cole slaw for a side salad I was told it would be an additional $3.00. The place was closing at 4:00 and the staff started putting chairs on the empty tables around 3:15, which was quite loud and disturbing. But our waitress was nice.
