Fish was dry, hard to identify as fish, first time back since local Waxahachie Catfish King shut down years ago, Two items were very good the beans and tomato relish, but not good enough to bring me back. Restaurant was very dirty, old and dusty interior, and food was not good at all. It was very greasy and fish was over cooked. Went back to try a year later and had the same experience. Went to get supper yesterday. Took it home and was shocked that the fish was long thin strips, fried way too long. Not hardly any meat once you took the crust off, some just broke off with no meat. I asked for a baked potato in place of fries. He said there would be an upcharge of $2.49. Get home and the baked potato was like it had been sitting there all day! Nasty!! I ate at Cat Fish King with a friend today. I had a catfish sandwich which I really liked. My friend had the shrimp meal. All was good until my friend went to get in his car, throwing up beside his ride. He threw up twice more on the way home. And has now thrown up in his apartment. First time in today, and it won't be the last. We were on the tail end of early lunch (meaning many tables were already occupied, but the line was short). There is a big, easy to read menu behind the counter, so when it was time to order, we were ready. My wife is plant based only, so she ordered sides. I got the 5-7 piece fish plate and held the beans and instead got more hushpuppies. Order also came with fries, slaw and tomato relish. Two waters for drinks. Food arrived within 5 minutes. Heaping plate. I enjoyed everything, surprised by the relish. Why I'm not giving a 5 is as good as the fish was, there is something missing in the taste of the batter. Light and fluffy offsets for that, but. Plain old Tabasco as a seasoning would have been nicer. We found this place on yelp. We had actually driven by quite a few times past this place. I like mom and pop type family places and this place certainly fit the bill. It seemed more of a locals love us type place than a tourist or corporate feel to it. Staff was very pleasant and my wife and I loved the food. Portions were very plentiful and they were a decent price and value for sure. We both tried the shrimp and fish platters. The onion ring app was enormous and tasty. It was a very laid back place. We thoroughly enjoyed going here. I loved the unique pickled tomatoes they had here. Please see pic. They tasted similar to dill pickles. Great service and value. Really unassuming place...but then again, 85% of Waco is. However look beyond the less than ideal curb appeal and step inside...more of the same but the staff is friendly and the food is good. Moderately priced with good portions. I don't claim to be the fish fry taste expert but these are good. The batter could use more flavor to bring out the texture of the catfish but that's the fun of dipping it in tarter sauce I reckon. No complaints. French fries are "so so", onion rings are usually pretty good, but unpredictable ... they occasionally change the crusting. The slaw is very good & my spouse & brother love the Cajun beans. I have to say I can't believe we missed coming to this place for the past 4 years! My daughter's last semester at Baylor University and we finally decided to step into this place because we saw s boatload of cars in the parking lot! Granted it was lunch time but wow...the place was hopping! Now I know why. The food is great! The service super and the whole experience quite satisfying! This must be one of the most popular places in Waco to eat! The lunch specials are a steal for what you get! All I can say is try it. You'll see what I mean. The baked fish was perfect with the red sauce. The cocktail sauce that they serve. Yum! The catfish. Excellent. The slaw mmmmm mmm good! Wow, this place is the furthest from a King of anything but especially Catfish. The catfish portions were small, rubbery, and tasteless. The hush puppies were little cylinders straight out of the frozen food section of your inexpensive grocery store. The fries were ok, the coleslaw marginal and the bean were actually pretty good, but overall not really a very tasty meal. The restrooms were filthy and the decor dated and the restaurant un-kept. Didn't really make the place appetizing. Overall, the only redeeming quality of this place was the price. Frankly, I like Waco and especially some of the new changes from the Magnolia organization, but this place will not bring people back to Waco. I'll pick another place next time. read more

PLEASE READ and share!! I will probably never eat Catfish King In Waco,TX again. My dad has been going to eat there weekly for as long as it's been there. My dad was mortified. If He wouldn't have been with me I would have thought about tearing the place down, for his sake. My dad is the most reserved person I've met, so kind, patient. So here goes. We went to Catfish King yesterday, and while in the drive thru placing our order for a jumbo family meal, my 10 month old started to SCREAM. He was not being consoled, he is teething. So my dad being the kind man he is said he would walk around with him for the 5 mins it would take to get our food. I watched him walk and bounce Pier to keep him calm in the 96 degree heat. I see a huge man, with a managers shirt on walk up to my dad, and I can see he is confrontational. And I can see he is telling my dad he needs to leave. I was confused. My windows were up, I couldn't hear so I ask my daddy what that man said, he was so mortified he didn't want to tell me. Finally 5 mins down the road and tons of "daddy if you don't tell me's!?" He told me. The man told him they don't allow homeless people to roam the parking lot asking people for money. He needed to leave immediately. My dad laughed him at first, thinking he had to be kidding. But the man said "now, leave now!" I am SHOOK. Seriously? A man that was buying $50 worth of food can't walk around a parking lot bouncing babies for less than 5 mins?! I wouldn't have posted this, but after I cooled off, I went up to Catfish King today and explained what happened and they didn't want to do anything, barely a forced apology. I may be over reacting but to mortify a LOYAL customer?! I will never eat there again. I feel horrible for my dad. He didn't deserve that. read more
