My parents had issues with the service the first time they came, around when Tia Juanita's first opened. But today, our food came out quickly and correctly...and it was SO GOOD! The drinks, the apps, the entrees--all of them were full of flavor and really tasty. I would describe the menu as Cajun, Tex-Mex fusion. We had the crawfish queso (bomb), shrimp/fish tacos (fresh and bomb but small), shrimp quesadillas (also bomb), and the hush puppies (slightly less bomb and v small, but still yum). The vibe inside is a little overwhelming. It's pretty loud, and it's worse when there's live music, I hear. But it's a fun, immersive type of experience if you're looking for a more upbeat dining experience :) read more

Waiter was very short on conversation when I try to ask about food on menu, forgot to bring silverware, rcvd food and asked her for utensils to eat with and made a lil smirk on her face. Tried to get her attention several times to tell her about the shrimp as she was passing by the table , she kept walking, so I asked another waiter to send a mgr to table. The restaurant decor is really cool. They have a lot of TVs and various sports playing. The service is very friendly and fast. The food portions are huge and the prices are really good.!!!! The bar area is pretty huge. I don't know if it I would say it's a kid friendly restaurant but kids I'm sure could eat here. There is live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday also. Drove by Tia Juanita's on our way to Dallas and the food looked so amazing online that we made it a point to stop on our way back. We started with boudin and oysters, both of which were amazing! Then moved on to my favorite part of our meal. The shrimp tacos! I took one bite and couldn't put them down! I didn't get a photo because I was so busy just enjoying them. My husband and I, along with three other couples, recently met at Tia Juanita's Fish Camp for a birthday celebration on a packed Saturday night. They offer an extensive menu, and the food was excellent. Our table enjoyed a wide variety of dishes, but here's what I personally tried: Dip Sampler with Queso Hush Puppies with Jalapeño Butter Boudin Balls Seafood Enchiladas Tia's Punch I would happily reorder every one of them on a return visit. Others in our group ordered chargrilled oysters, raw oysters, boiled crawfish, fried crawfish, a Po'Boy, quesadillas, and shrimp tacos. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals, which tells me you really can't go wrong no matter what you choose. I also spotted several other items I'd love to try next time. Our server was personable and worked hard to keep up with the busy crowd. The live music added to the fun, lively atmosphere and made the evening even more enjoyable. So why not five stars? Although I made a 6:30 reservation, we weren't seated until 7:45. If a reservation isn't going to be honored close to the scheduled time, it's frustrating. The best way I can explain this place is it's a Mexican sports bar with a Cajun flare. Joshua, was a good server. He even let me try the seafood soup before ordering and I'm glad he did, it was not for me. On the other hand I did like the shrimp cocktail. It came out in this sundae glass .. Soo cute. A friend and I ate there on Monday. The decorum was nice enough to deserve the Fish Camp designation and they had cold air conditioning. We decided to set at the Bar, which was nice enough. The server/bartendress was a bit on the "cold-side"! We ordered two small bowls of sausage and chicken gumbo, a dozen raw oysters and two "house " margaritas. The delivery was quick enough, but after taking a few bites from our watered-down gumbo, we discovered that it was shrimp gumbo (with about a tablespoon of rice and three shrimp- not what we ordered)! We told the waitress and she acted somewhat annoyed, but brought us what we had originally ordered, which was passable, but not really impressive! At the same time, we then received our order of oysters (normally, I would consider the oysters an appetizer and would generally be served first, prior to receiving the main dish)! The oysters appeared to be fresh and the cocktail sauce was served with horse-radish that could be added at will. My friend also complained about the original gumbo we received (being watery and sparse of anything but rue and a bit of rice and a few shrimp! She said that she wasn't the cook and didn't make it (understandable, but my friend was simply offering his two-cents for consideration)! When I received our bill, I was partly shocked (because I didn't really pay attention to the menu prices, because I mean, how much should a small lunch cost?), however, we could have gone to a great "Steak" restaurant down the road and gotten out cheaper! Let me start by saying that I'm not a huge seafood fan, but that has never stopped me from supporting seafood restaurants, especially when they offer other menu options. I usually review the menu ahead of time so I know what I may want to order, and if there aren't many non-seafood choices, I'm still open to stopping by for drinks and the atmosphere. Unfortunately, my experience here was disappointing. The "fajita beef" was shredded so finely that I honestly couldn't tell what I was eating. I also had to send the beans back because they were cold, and overall the entire meal was only lukewarm. The service also left a lot to be desired. I mentioned that it was my first time visiting and hoped for a recommendation, but none was offered. The waitress seemed irritated and somewhat unwelcoming throughout the experience. We originally planned to just order drinks and decide later about food, but we repeatedly felt pressured to place an order. Because we were seated in her section instead of at the bar, it felt like there was an expectation for us to order a full meal, which made the experience feel rushed and uncomfortable. We tried this for the first time today. Good first impression. Fried green tomatoes were small so the thick breading took away from the green tomato taste. The grilled oysters were really good. We will return as the menu looks to have many more items we would like to try. Came a second time today. Stuffed mushrooms were great and had to try the other grilled oysters which we will eat again. We have eaten at other Tia Juanita locations so we decided to try the new one in Waco. It was packed. The hostess accidentally typed my phone number in wrong and it pushed us to the end of the line when we figured it out, so our wait was a little longer than it should have been. I got the fajitas with corn tortillas (ended up getting 2 corn & 2 flour). My husband got a po'boy and gumbo combo. He said the gumbo tasted a little burnt but he did eat it all. The fish tacos were three tacos sharing a single small piece of tilapia, barely any food. My fried oyster po' boy and gumbo were also problematic. The gumbo had a burned roux and very weak flavor. I stopped after a few sips. The oysters were good until I bit into shell, and the bread was chewy and stale. Came at 5:30pm on a Wednesday night. The place seemed busy but we were seated right away. There was a mix up on our server but eventually we got taken care of. Our server was new and didn't seem to have any server experience. He was able to answer all of our questions and always made sure our needs were met. There was a problem with my alcoholic drink but the manager immediately fixed it without me asking. The seafood platter comes with fried shrimp, oysters, catfish and a crab cake. It was a great dish to share with the family and we still had leftovers. The boudin ball was pretty good but didn't taste like boudin to me. The jalepeno ranch is something you definitely want to order Their draft beer is 29 degrees cold. Once we left around 6:30pm the place was very busy and obviously on a wait list. We ended up having an appetizer chips and queso - the cheese was spot on and chips were crispy. My friend ordered crab cakes and the waitress came back to the table and told us y'all were out of them.
