We arrived in time for the lunch menu but had to wait until after the lunch menu had expired. The girl who seated us arranged for an exception to be made in our case and we could order off the lunch menu. Thank you. The food was good but not exceptional. The portions, even on the lunch menu were large. Price was high but not exceptionally so for Julian. Five stars for special treatment!

That said, I do want to clarify that, from what I observed, we were not the last table to be seated. I understand it was a busy Fourth of July, and I know everyone can make mistakes. My disappointment wasn't because of the wait alone--it was because my order was incorrect multiple times, and I was eventually asked again what I had ordered even though it was just biscuits and gravy. By the time my food finally arrived, the experience had already been affected. I don't expect perfection, especially on a busy holiday. I simply shared my honest experience and hope it helps improve service for future guests. -------------------- We ordered our food and my friend received her meal, but my order of biscuits and gravy didn't come out correctly. The server acknowledged the mistake, saying it was her fault and that she would get it fixed right away. Unfortunately, the wrong order was brought out, and the staff had to come back and ask what I had originally ordered. It was a simple order--just biscuits and gravy--so it was frustrating that it was difficult to get right. When the correct food finally arrived, the experience had already been delayed and a bit discouraging. At that point, I was honestly just over it, especially when I was asked if I wanted a box, as if we were finished. Overall, the food was fine once it arrived, but the service experience that day was disorganized and left a negative impression.

Dawn and Ed are great communicators, they had cookies ready for us on arrival, and Dawn met us to check us in and give us info. We stayed in the Rose room, which is roomy, has a heater and an old fireplace which they give you wood for. Bathroom/shower has a separate heater, and the room has its own patio, but we found it's much nicer to explore the grounds and sit on one of their many benches and chairs spread throughout the hillside with nice views. There are cows across the street that are friendly, and we went to say hi to them in the mornings and feed them tall grass. And don't forget to step outside the cottage at night to gaze at the Milky way galaxy...you heard me correctly...not just stars, you can see the faint outline of the Milky way because Julian is a Dark Sky community and Ed and Dawn's place is very dark at night...epic! Breakfasts are a delicious two course meal of a fruit dish and main. Added bonus is chatting with Ed and Dawn about Julian history and getting tips on places to go/eat. Ed and Dawn were also accommodating to bring our breakfast to their outdoor patio since my fiancé had some smell sensitivity to the food cooking in the main room (but also, it's kind of nicer to sit outside, but then you miss communing with the other guests) The main breakfast/communal area has a bunch of books and movies you can check out and take to your room, along with microwavable popcorn...we watched Gone with the Wind on VHS with the fire burning at night...such a charming and memorable time! Thanks Dawn and Ed! Our only recommendations would be: 1) for those with allergies, getting some cotton bed sheets rather than microfiber/synthetic material (we asked but they didn't have any at the time) 2) while we loved the charm of the themed rooms, there is just a lot of stuff, i.e. old teddy bears/dolls on shelves, old style window curtains that are more for show rather than necessary since the windows already have blinds, these things just make the room feel crowded and also gather dust. But maybe that's just our minimalist preference? 3) The room is advertised with a Queen bed, but seemed more like a Full (perhaps it's a European Queen?), just seemed on the smaller side. In any event, we'll probably try to book the Apple room next time which has a King size bed (which was already taken during our stay) and has a view into the woods. 4) the couch/futon cushion is detached from the wood frame and has a tendency to slide around, and it's also bigger than the seating area, so you could end up sitting on the cushion but not the frame, thus falling down.

Reservations are encouraged but not mandatory as I saw numerous people get in as walk ins before my reservation. Walk-ins are seated at the bar and limited to 1 hour. For reservations they do not seat early even if you check in early. No dress code, saw people with tube tops and flip flops. They sell lots of different types of alcohol in their store. I purchased a $33 bottle of Amaretto that said it had a cookie essence. Bar Entry: The hostess will check ID and then you sit or stand on the platform and it slowly spins you around to the inside. Bathrooms are on the left and exit on the right. Our server was great and listened to what we wanted in a drink and offered options. Tried: Amuse $4 - we were celebrating a birthday so these were offered as birthday shots. Amaretto sour $18 - very good. Smooth and not too strong. French kiss - very strong. Didn't like this one. Mint mojito mocktail (aka dealers choice) $11 - this was so good and refreshing. I love the atmosphere inside. We were seated in throne like chairs which was very cool. We made a reservation and although we arrived on time, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. I agree with some of the other commenters when they say that the revolving fireplace needs some love. It has the look and feel of needing to be updated. Also, for it to be a "speakeasy" vibe, you could hear the loudness of the bar through the walls. It just kind of ruins the facade a little bit. Regardless, we enjoyed the novelty of being slowly admitted to the speakeasy on the opposite side. We were given seats and upon first glance it was a dark lit space with an old fashioned aesthetic. I was surprised to see how casual everyone was dressed- I assumed there was a dress code, but I guess flip flops made the cut ‍. It took a few minutes for our server to attend to us, and when he did you could tell he was slammed. We just didn't get the table side manner one was hoping for an establishment like this. Peeking at their drink menu, I found myself disappointed that much of their options had a lot of sweet or fruit juice ingredients. So, I went for their old fashioned. For the price, it was just okay. Another disappointing moment. In all, it wasn't terrible, but it just isn't worth the hype. Overpriced and mediocre drinks and a seemingly overworked staff didn't make for a memorable experience and ended up not being for us. Glad to have tried it...but look elsewhere if you've actually been to a speakeasy. This just doesn't live up to what it's trying to sell you.

The bar area was nice, the music was good but the lighting is a little too dark and yellow. We started off with cocktails and ordered 2 apps, the wings and the Brussel sprouts. When the drinks came out, my wife's Chardonnay had what seemed like broken glass at the bottom and the flavor was off so we switched it for a Pinot Grigio. I had a Cool Hand Lucy, I wasn't a fan. It was a little too sweet for my taste. The appetizers showed up soon after and the Brussel sprouts were delicious but the cashew crusted wings looked a lot better than they tasted. The wings seemed pre-fried and fired up again when ordered, making them dry. The flavors were a little weird too, imagine sweet and sour with cashew crumbs. We won't be ordering that next time. My wife got The sea bass and I the châteaubriand as it was a chef special. However, I would have not ordered it if I had known before hand that this was a platter to share, something the waiter didn't mention which would have been helpful. My wife liked her sea bass. It was cooked perfectly. My meal was a disappointment. The filet was sliced so thin it reminded me of cold cuts spread over a bed of arugula with potato wedges, $120. The flavor was good but I would have like my steak to be sliced thicker. When i think about my experience at the Red Door, I feel that almost of what fell short was due to our server. My wife's Chardonnay, my meal and even my cocktail were things that the waiter did or suggested. Overall, I felt like they missed the mark. If we do come back, we will probably sit in the main dining room and make sure to ask a lot of questions when ordering.

Our go-to order is the Buffalo wings and the Bay Hill Standard burger, and those never disappoint. We did try brunch once and ordered off the kids menu (a regular breakfast), and honestly it was pretty underwhelming for the price. Wouldn't recommend that particular option. Our most recent visit was the bigger issue. We had Noah as our server, and the service was really slow despite the restaurant not being busy. He brought the check, then came back to clear our table and asked if we wanted the check, only to realize he'd already brought it, with our card sitting right there ready to go. Even though they use handheld devices to cash out right at the table, he still didn't process it then and there, and instead didn't return for another 15 minutes. Our waters never got refilled, and after asking three times, he ended up spilling water all over my husband's phone and sunglasses with no apology at all. The World Cup was on and it felt like that had more of his attention than we did. Food was good as always, which is the only reason this isn't a lower rating. But it wasn't just Noah, overall the waitstaff's customer service felt lacking. As we were leaving, a group of them were near the entrance rolling silverware and pretty much blocking the doorway. Even when we said excuse me, no one moved or said goodbye. Hoping this was just an off day, but the overall vibe left something to be desired.

Maggie misses the fresh baked fruit bars and were soft and full of sweet fruit flavor.  Cashier told us they are only baked on Saturday now.  We touched the fruit bars and they were all hard from sitting around half the week.  It's sad as we loved stopping here after a trip to Julian for fresh baked treats and Doc Brown's Root Beer.  Looks like we will have to buy all our baked treats at one of the Julian bakeries like Apple Alley that bakes their pies every morning.  https://www.hungryones.com/2021/10/apple-alley-bakery/ Staff was nice and efficient.
