Trays full of fresh bread of different varieties, whole pies, a case full of beautiful desserts and baked goods, plus an excellent lineup of sandwiches, the only problem is what to pick. This has become a go-to spot post-hike in the area and always is the treat I look forward to. On my most recent visit I had the BLT which had avocado, an egg, and chipotle mayo on brioche - hit the spot. Each sandwich comes on a different type of bread, which adds to the flavor profiles for each. Sometimes places just put it all on wheat or sourdough, but I like how the bread is paired to add to the sandwich. There's seating inside and out and always plenty of parking, though I can imagine on the weekend, it's more competitive. I read that the owner of the French Gourmet bought Dudley's and promised not to make any changes to the baked goods.  That does not appear to be the case.  We showed up at 1pm on Wednesday and it was quiet.  In the past there was a big lunch crowd and the shelves were full of fresh baked breads and pies.   Supposedly, breads are baked every other day now.  I bought a loaf of Hawaiian sweet bread and it was at least a day old.  I suspect more like 2 days old.  The outside was starting to get hard while just the center was soft.  There was an aroma of bread sitting around for a while.  King's Hawaiian bread from Costco has a fresher aroma and has a fresher more vibrant flavor while you get twice as much bread for the price. Love dropping by Dudley's when I'm in the area. They do everything well here. The baked goods are incredible, the sandwiches are delicious, and the coffee bar is pretty solid. There's usually a line here, but it's totally worth the wait. There's a cool little store inside that sells all sorts of little knick knacks which really add to the overall charm. I've enjoyed Dudley's on other visits so it's disappointing that my most recent experience left a bad impression. I placed an online order at 4:45 PM, when their posted hours are closing at 5:30 PM on Yelp, their website, and the Toast ordering system. We are about 10 minutes away but decided to order ahead rather than walking in closer to closing. When we arrived before 5 PM, we were immediately told they were closed. I explained that we placed an online order and was told "I canceled it, you won't be charged." I understand that businesses sometimes close early but the order was accepted through their system and there was no notification that it had been canceled. We drove there because we believed our order was in progress. A phone call would have saved us the trip. At the very least, I would have appreciated a "I'm sorry, we had to close early and had to cancel your order." Instead, we were made to feel like we were inconveniencing them by showing up for an order their system had accepted. The Toast order still doesn't indicate that it has been canceled. I realize Dudley's doesn't control every aspect of Toast but they can keep their hours up to date and prevent online orders from being accepted when they aren't going to fulfill them. Another couple walked up afterward and asked us if they were closed. For a business serving people traveling through Julian/Santa Ysabel, accurate hours matter, especially when this may be someone's last opportunity to grab food before heading out of town. Closing early is understandable. Allowing an order to be placed, not notifying the customer, and then responding rudely when they arrive is not. This experience makes me hesitant to return. read more

A must stop when driving up to Julian. They have delicious pies, jams, olive oil, and their famous bread. Great variety of flavors and good price. I always get the jalapeño cheddar and the raisin date. You can always freeze the bread and grab some slices as you go so the bread does not go bad. So many wrongs. BF ordered egg and cheese croissant . I ordered French Dip. For eat in. Egg and cheese came on a smashed bun with what looked like prefab eggs and very little to no cheese. His remake with croissant was no better and smallest, coldest sandwich I've ever seen. He got a refund. My French Dip was more like a pressed cheese sandwich with maybe two slices of gray beef. The Au Jus was brown water with no flavor. Adding the horseradish cream, salt and pepper out of those little packets didn't help. Never, ever again. read more

We tried their spinach feta pastry, raspberry cheese danish, and spiced apple walnut pastry. They were all tasty, flaky, buttery with the perfect level of sweetness. Their chipotle turkey sandwich was also fresh, flavorful, and filling! All the ingredients complemented each other from the pepper jack cheese to the red onion, tomato, chipotle aoili and jalapeño cheddar bread. They sell whole loaves of all sorts of breads, pies, cookies, muffins, cafe moto coffee, local honey, etc. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating as well and plenty of free parking. Very cute coffee shop on our trip to Anza borrego and glad we stopped by. Honestly we actually stopped by just use a restroom but this was a really good find. Lovely aesthetic on the inside and quite a nice selection of items for purchase as well. The variety of breads they have was unbelievable! Put the bread lover in me really wanted to go all out. The pastry selection was also really lovely. Husband and I got the Pistachio Stuffed Flaky Brioche and it was really delicious even a few hours later. The pistachio cream was smooth and not too sweet either and when really well with the croissant. Sister-In-Law got the Nutella flaky brioche and that definitely did have quite a lot of Nutella inside! Definitely value for money. We come here at Dudleys mostly for their Pies, their bread and other Pastries were good too. My wife can eat a whole pie here in one sitting by herself; that's how much she likes their pies. We mostly eat here at their place and then buy more pies to go. We always purchase their APPLE PEACH PIE and APPLE MANGO PIE. We stopped by Dudley's on our way home from Julian to pick up some lunch for the road. After all the old timey shops we had just been to, it was refreshing to find a modern bakery. We bought a few loaves of bread to take home, a tuna sandwich, and jam. The bread is not the best I've ever had, but still good. We've been coming to Dudley's for over 30 years. In the old days, I would take orders from friends and family members and come home with 20 loaves of bread to distribute This has always been a very good bakery - for breads, muffins, cookies and pastries. Now, they also have a cute little gift shop. Today, we stopped by and bought a bear claw and a savory spinach pastry. The savory was good, but it almost had too much spinach. We really enjoyed the bear claw with a yummy almond paste and would definitely buy it again. I also purchased a few cute cards. The toasted jalapeño cheese bread was so good we bought a loaf - and a loaf of Asiago, and a few others. lol. Also tried the brioche with pistachio cream, which was soft and flaky. There was plenty of cream and it was a satisfying sweet treat. There's plenty to look at inside, too - mugs, dishes, soaps, cards, etc. and a fair amount of seating to enjoy your treats. The service was friendly. It did take a while for our sandwich order to be filled, but everything's freshly made, so that could be why - and it was crowded. Lots of people seem to like this place. oh man... what can I say about this pastry/bakery? If you are on the way to Julian, Dudley's is a must! When you walk in, you'll see the wide array of pastry, breads, and other cool items to check out. Mainly, I was there for their bread. Its as good as it gets! Their jalapeno bread is wickedly good. The garlic one is the next in line of my favs there. How good you ask? You'll need to finish it within 6 days. Otherwise, you'll need to freeze it to prolong the shelf life. Why? Because there are no preservatives in their loafs. Its the real deal. Inside, you'll find a lot of kitchen and random items which is quite cute to browse around. I took my husband to Dudley's Bakery for the first time and he is officially a Dudley's fan. We rarely have a weekend off together so we did a mini road trip to Julian and on the way of course I had to take him to Dudley's. Superbowl Sunday meant less people on the road and a pretty quiet visit, at first he didn't really understand all the hype but now he's a convert. He roamed around the store and in turn I ended up finding clearance section for the Christmas goodies. I ended up picking up a Bread Bauble, which is completely appropriate and a steal at $4. As for food, we ended up getting their sliced cheddar jalapeno bread and scored a box of pastries at 50% off, plus we ordered a Bajapotle sandwich to share and added bacon to it. For everything it was around $40+, if you have never had a sandwich from Dudley's please do yourself a favor and get one. The Bajapotle was so good, the spice from the jalapeno bread really tied it all together and had the best meat to cheese to veggie ratio! A couple of days later I did end up recreating that sandwich, but alas not as good as Dudley's. For $10 our pastry box, included 2 croissants, 2 cinnamon rolls and a savory pastry which I think had tomato jam. The cinnamon rolls are amazing, not too sweet and the glaze is perfect! I ended up eating the savory pastry too and it was just the right little snack. I fear we will be driving 45 minutes to Dudley's just to get bread and I'm not mad at that haha. If you're heading up to the town of Julian for some apple pies and Fall vibes, you might want to stop by Dudley's bakery for a loaf or two of their bread. We usually pack with us some deli meat, cheese and veggies on our road trip up, pick up a variety of bread at Dudley's and have a picnic somewhere. We have been lucky a few times where there is no line of people, but the weekend before Halloween and most likely, Halloween weekend, you'll hit the crowds. Once inside, you'll find a cafe counter for sandwiches, coffee and pastries. If you want to take some bread home, just grab the ones you want from the rack and head to the counter to pay for it. We like the Sheephearder bread, deli onion rye, Hawaiian, Asiago olive, and Irish potato. There is also a variety of sweet dessert loaves; like apple cinnamon, etc. During the Fall season, you'll find pumpkin pastries, bread and pies. What I love about their bread is that all of the ingredients are locally sourced, no preservatives, and is made with local spring water. Buy four loaves and get the fifth one free. We were a party of 4 that honestly planned on going to your competition across the parking lot for lunch at about noon today. We forgot that they were closed on Tuesday, so we decided to check your place out. One of us ordered the Bajapolte sandwich. Loaded with turkey and aside from missing the chipotle mayo was very good (4 stars). The other 3 of us ordered the French Dip. They each had only 2 very thin slices of beef a single slice of cheese, that was it. The Au jus had an odd flavor but that would be your recipe, not a complaint. Even your menu picture shows 4-5 slices of beef. It was on squashed bread (1 star each). The hoagie roll tasted fresh though. When you factor in the 4 drinks and bag of chips with the sandwiches, $75 for 1 decent sandwich was not worth it. We would have bought some bread and pastry, but customer service was really nonexistent (we could not get anyone's attention about the skimpy sandwiches either). We drove up from La Quinta today for a "famous" apple pie. When we got home after our two hour return trip this evening anticipating a delicious dessert, it was raw on the inside. We also tried two desserts--a raspberry pastry and a cheese Danish--along with a Crazy Chai Latte and a Raspberry Mocha Latte. The latter felt like hot chocolate. Coffee signatures ranged from $6 to $7, depending on the size. This was my second visit, the first was a few years ago when it was much quieter.
