First visit to Catrina's Mexican Fusion, located in a space that once housed another Mexican restaurant I used to frequent years ago. We decided to stop in for a Cinco de Mayo celebration after seeing promotions for surprise food and drink specials, a live DJ, and a performance by Rafael Leidenz, apparently a comedian and Juan Gabriel impersonator. Not knowing much about either performer, we thought it sounded like a fun and lively way to spend the evening. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being pretty mixed. To start, I ordered the queso dip with added chorizo along with a house margarita. The queso was fairly unremarkable, served lukewarm, while the chorizo lacked the sear and crispness that really brings out its flavor. The tortilla chips were similarly underwhelming and could have benefited from at least a touch of seasoning. Normally I would have added a little salt myself, but there weren't any salt and pepper shakers available at the table. The margarita was serviceable, though sweeter than I personally prefer. For my main, I ordered the Jalisciense Burrito with carnitas and vegetables, smothered in queso. At first glance, the burrito appeared heavily weighted toward vegetables, though they were cooked very well, the red peppers still had a pleasant al dente bite while the onions were nicely rendered. About a quarter of the way through, I finally hit the carnitas section, and from there everything came together much better. Overall, it ended up being a flavorful and enjoyable burrito. Given the holiday crowds and event atmosphere, I'm willing to chalk up some of the food and service inconsistencies to the unusually high volume. Service throughout the night was minimal and difficult to flag down, though the eventual arrival of their habanero hot sauce, after three requests, was one of the better highlights of the evening. Now for the biggest issue: the sound volume. I've attended plenty of Cinco de Mayo celebrations and more concerts than I can count, so I'm not particularly sensitive to loud environments, but this crossed into genuinely uncomfortable territory. The DJ had the speakers absolutely pegged, with occasional distortion harsh enough to make people cover their ears. By the time Rafael Leidenz began performing, my ears were already numb. To Rafael's credit, he was entertaining. I don't speak Spanish and couldn't understand most of the performance, but his subtle comedic mannerisms and stage presence were enjoyable and clearly resonated with the crowd. Unfortunately, the excessive volume made it nearly impossible to hold a conversation with anyone at the table, which overshadowed much of the evening. The good: Rafael's performance and the habanero sauce. The okay: the food. The bad: the sound level and service. Had the volume been dialed back to a level where people could actually enjoy both the entertainment and each other's company, this easily would have been a more favorable review. read more

The food was very good and we enjoyed it, but the consistency of the servings were off as well as the service. Exceptionally nice and helpful service, but orders came out missing sides or wrong sides. Two people got chicken quesadillas, but the amount of chicken on one was far less than the other. Three of us got the Barria tacos, and they were very good, but again one was loaded and the other two were less. Two who ordered 2nd to last didn't get their order and the server reconfirmed their entire order as if the order was never placed. I had read other reviews that stated the service is poor when the place isn't busy. There were only two parties in the place on a Saturday evening. Both birthday parties. Not sure why less people would have poor service. I'd expect the opposite. Not sure that we will go back. There are too many other restaurants to try. read more

This restaurant is open till 1am. When you go in the restaurant is pretty cute; the art work in there is very pretty, and there is Spanish music playing. We came in and were waiting to be seated but no body came nor anybody said anything , so my husband said let's go to the bar. After we sat at the bar everything went well. Service was amazing. Our server/bartender Victor was the greatest; friendly, polite, helpful, super nice. The food was delicious! Both of our steaks were made to perfection and so flavorful. I checked out Catrinas for the first time this weekend. It was a Friday evening and the place was petty empty. I sat myself at the bar and I had made it just in time to order a happy hour margarita and I was not disappointed. The menu has so many options but I decided on the birria tacos and the esquite appetizer. The esquite was very flavorful but I would've preferred if it was on the cob. The birria was so full and definitely not skimpy at all. I did find the birria to have an overwhelming amount of sauce/grease that I did my best to reduce before eating but the flavor and texture were on point. The shells were nice and crispy. The server was attentive but I think she may have been new. She didn't know much about the menu items but went to find out the answers to any questions I had with pleasure. We gathered here to celebrate a birthday. There's plenty of parking. Nice, fun and colorful decor. It's a pretty spacious location. The bar offers plenty of sitting with TVs. To our surprise, there was live music. We got there with enough time to order from the Happy Hour Menu. I started it with the Catrina Margarita. Perfect mixed cocktail and a generous portion. Like it so much, I ordered a second one. For appetizers, we ordered the guacamole and queso fundido. Flavorful starters served with chips and salsa. I ordered the steak tacos with a side of rice and extra pico de gallo. Nice portion, enough to take left overs home. Our waitress was so nice and attentive. The manager was great and offered the birthday girl a shot. Thank you! The night ended with great dessert, Tres Leches and live music. Recently moved in the area and was craving some tacos. Catrina's was up the street and had great reviews. Upon arrival, the parking lot was a bit packed but the wait to be sat was immediate. We were quickly attended to and put in our drink order. I ordered the dragon berry mojito and it was a bit sweeter than anticipated. The chips and salsa came soon after and the salsa was top notch! They use roasted tomatoes which elevated the taste compared to your usual salsa at a Mexican restaurant. For dinner, I got the three Mexican tacos - one steak and two Al pastor. The al pastor was my absolute favorite. Sweet from the pineapple and savory from the seasonings and chilis. There was also a live band performing who got the crowd going and dancing. read more

Great place on Saturday night. They had a marachi band playing earlier (which I missed) and then a singer with someone playing on the drums. A friend of mine invited me out and I had ate before I came but I said you know what, let me get the guacamole dip & tbh it wasn't great. Only thing I tasted was the avocado. 4 stars for good food, good drinks and a nicely remodeled restaurant. After I tried Birria Taco's last year I have been on a bit of a Beria taco kick. These were good. The meat was tender and flavorful. There could have been more meat but that is just in comparison to other Birria tacos that I've had. The broth was also very good. The cocktail I had was very good. This drink wasn't super sweet. My husband said the steak tacos were also good, but he prefers strips. These steak tacos were pieces of steak. Good nonetheless. I came here to meet up with fellow Yelper Jordain to try something new, and we chose this place as it was semi-convenient for both of us and neither of us have been here before (although I was there when it was a different Mexican restaurant). Our server was attentive and checked on us regularly. I tried a mezcal drink called the Volcano and it erupted in my mouth with a smokey, fruity flavor. Delicious, although it (and the other drinks) were quite expensive for a place like this. Our drinks were bartender's choice based on some question the waitress asked us. They were talking in Spanish to each other, and my Spanish isn't that great. I had one of my favorite dishes, the Chori Pollo and the chorizo had a beautiful flavor and covered the chicken nicely. I also got a crunch beef taco which was delicious so this placed passed the test. The fusion part is they also have some dishes like Mofongo and other stuff like that, which isn't necessarily my cup of niqui. I stuck to the Mexican dishes. I haven't decided if I'd go back or not. It was good, but I enjoy other Mexican places a lot more. Drink prices at this place are a little high, but the food is good. read more

ive always seen this place while waiting for the bus and finally decided to try it. At first, I was overwhelmed by hoe loud it was because there was a giant screen playing a video of someone DJing, but after a while, i got used to it and was able to enjoy how amazing this food was. Our server was extremely kind and made our experience even better! Went here over the weekend as the Mexican craving hit. I've eaten here a few times and I'd probably give it a 3.5 stars. The interior is beautiful as others have stated but it is LOUD. The volume of the music was a bit much at noon on a Sunday. Service here is pretty spotty, often having to flag someone down to ask for refills, napkins, etc. On to the food, it's pretty average Mexican food but the price point for what you get is high. One of the items we ordered rang up as significantly more on our bill, so double check your receipts. read more

Stopped by for dinner tonight with Hailey! What a cute spot for good drinks and food. Of course we ordered margs to start and they were huge and tasty too! I got the Passion Fruit Margarita and Hailey got the Mango Chamoy. The Passion Fruit Margarita was refreshing and strong! The Mango Chamoy was frozen and it was perfectly sweet. Next time, I might have to get that drink! Moving onto food, we started off with the complimentary salsa and chips, which were great! We also got the Queso and the Guacamole and let me tell you, we ate every last chip. The guacamole is fresh made and the queso was so creamy! We then shared the Chicken Quesadilla and the Shrimp Fajitas which both came with delicious sides, including rice, beans, lettuce, salsa, guac, and sour cream. The Quesadilla was so cheesy and flavorful and the Shrimp Fajitas were cooked perfectly along with the veggies. Their drink and food portions are pretty big so be prepared to feast! We just went there to know this new restaurant. The environment is amazing. Staff really nice and friendly, including the owners that were in the restaurant. We ordered the Mexican sangria = DELICIOUS, and the house margarita, is ok. Sampler is really good, a lot of options to try. The queso fundido with pesto chorizo, has a very good taste, we really enjoy it. Tostones cup is a MUST have, it's really good, shrimp well flavored, creamy inside, crispy on the outside and some green sauce on the side, that makes even better. They have recently revised their food and cocktail menus. We started with the guacamole and chips, along with the free salsa. Salsa was delicious. Guacamole was good too, except I could tell they had an additive that made the guac taste off. I prefer just avocados, lime, cilantro, & salt. No "additives" to make the dish go further. We ordered the La Catrina Margarita. REALLY GOOD!! We even got to pick our top shelf tequila. Also had the Raspberry coconut Mojito. It was ok, not fantastic. Entrees were Chile Rellenos with carnitas and cheese, Tex-Mex chicken tacos, and the Catrina's burrito, steak. The Rellenos were tasty, but the breading was way too thick. I like a very thin breading on my chiles. The tacos were good, but a little bland. The burrito (I took to-go) was very light. I wondered how it could be a burrito and be featherlight. Definitely found out quickly that it was full of lettuce and not full of anything else. Very little amount of steak, and they also forgot the queso on the outside. Disappointing, especially since I brought it home, for my husband, for dinner. Steak tasted good but there wasn't much of it. Their cilantro rice and yellow rice are both really delicious. The refried beans were really yummy too. Also, the presentation of the food is gorgeous, as you can see in the pictures. I didn't realize this location was so close to my house as it is, I should have checked it out sooner. We went a little early in the evening so it was kind of quiet but it was starting to pick up was we were finishing. Francisco was our bartender and he was so sweet and helpful. We (I did) asked lots of questions and he was very patient with us (me). We ordered margaritas, they were BOGO during the time we were there and munched on chips and salsa. They have a deal on Wednesdays after 6pm where if you buy an entrée you get an appetizer for half off. We ordered the birria tacos to start since it was before six. The tacos were very good and it was a large portion. We were full by the time it turned six so we didn't end up ordering an appetizer. I definitely want to go back and try some other dishes. I love Mexican food so I'm always looking to try new places. I've tried a few places in orlando. I was in town for the weekend and wanted to pick up some food to bring back to the hotel. I passed this place a few times and I really wanted to try it. I ordered over the phone. When I went to pick it up it looked like a really nice place to eat. It's a Sunday afternoon and there was a guy setting up to play music on a small stage. There was also a wall of sodas that looked really cool. It was very clean and nicely decorated. We ordered beef columbian style empanadas, fish tacos, tacos al pastor Mexicana, pablano pasta with shrimp, and the chicken chimichanga. It also came with sides of chips and salsa. Our bill was $90 before tip. The tip was already written into our bill when we arrived, as we had given our credit card number over the phone. The tip was about $15 When we unpacked everything it was still warm, so that was good. The portions are pretty big. We could only eat about half of our food. The chimichanga was good, but kind of dry. It came with a side of white queso to pour over it. I'm not a big fan of queso, but I poured it on. I really enjoyed the chips and salsa. The chimichanga came with a side of refried beans. Those were really good. My husband had the tacos Al pastor. He asked for a side of rice and beans. It came with rice and refried beans, which he doesn't really like. But that was really the only mistake or hiccup that we had with our meal. My daughter ordered the pablano pasta. It came with two pieces of garlic bread. She said it was really good and couldn't even eat half of it. My other daughter had the fish tacos. She ate 2 out of the three and said they were really good. She couldn't eat any of the refried beans and rice. The empanadas said they were Columbian style, but they weren't, as you can see from the picture. Columbian style are cornmeal and these were flour. The salsa for them was really good though! It was a shredded beef. Columbian empanadas have a ground beef with potatoes- like a spam with potatoes mix in a cornmeal crust. But they were still good. From the moment we entered and had to find the host after not being greeted at the hostess stand, the mistakes with the cocktails, the bright lighting, and the tables are too low at the booths....it was just a bad experience. It looks like they put a lot of renovation and thought into the place. Just don't understand such bright lights especially for dinner. Ambiance like a Chipotle, but with a bar. As far as the food, overall it was overpriced for traditional Mexican food and didn't warrant the price. All the dishes are $13.99-$28.99 which I think is expensive for Mex. The appetizers were $10-14. No a la carte meals, only sides. Many of the cocktails are $14.99! The chips are good. The queso was decent, but too thick. And the chips took forever to be refilled while the cheese got cold. The refried beans are good but they forgot to bring them out so had to ask. The dollop of guacamole was brown. Really? And there was only pepper at the tables. No salt. The frozen margarita was terrible. The margarita on the rocks was okay, but they forgot the salt rim which we ordered. The ground beef was good and was happy to see that on the menu. The mild and hot salsas were great. The waiter was in training so no fault there, but how can so many things go wrong? They also charged the wrong amount on our bill. Paid up front at cashier to sort it out and so we could leave. Mexican is our favorite and definitely wont go back here unless so major changes are made. read more
