My husband and I were walking around downtown Winter Park in need of some Mexican food. After finding out the hard way that Cocina 214 was out of business, we found the next closest option, which was Pepe's. It's a small, quaint little restaurant a bit further away from the busy streets. We were seated immediately for Sunday lunch and greeted with friendly service. They had a lot more to offer than your standard Mexican establishment...it took me a little bit to even decide what to order! Their margaritas are solid! I also went with the Pollo Pepe's, a large grilled chicken slice smothered in queso, peppers & tomatoes. After adding a couple sides I had myself two meals that day! Live within walking distance. Walked in and noticed it was pretty small inside but when I asked if they had a bar they took me around the corner to the beautiful bar oasis ! Loved the vibes. I hate leaving reviews like this but I like to be honest about my experience. The ambiance was great, only outdoor seating but lit well and had ample seating high tops and low top tables. They had a nice bar area with seating as well. The food lacked for me, the salsa had no kick or spice, the table side guac was good. The food all was very mid - little seasoning, and nothing stood out. The only thing I liked was my chimichanga. Portions are very small. My fries were undercooked after requesting well done. Pepe's Cantina is such a cute, quaint restaurant in Winter Park. There are little shops to walk around in and I suggest checking out Rifle Paper Co if you're in the area. We sat outside because it's beautiful in December and immediately had chips and salsa which were crispy and fresh. I ordered the mini nachos which is the perfect size for 1 person and they were delicious and affordable. My husband got the birria tacos which were crispy and the meat was very flavorful. My kids got the steak quesadillas which you can choose either from rice or fries. (Do the Mexican rice) and my mother in law got the carne asada tacos which were delicious as well. Recently visited Pepe's Cantina in Winter Park and had a good time. The restaurant is mostly outside, they have a small inside area with 3 or 4 tables. Out front they have tables on the sidewalk, great for people watching and then some tables on the side of the restaurant and in the back is the bar. The side and bar area are decorated with plants and outdoor string lights, it's a really fun vibe and atmosphere. I love their house margarita and I got the bowl with pulled chicken- it was delicious! You also can't go wrong with their chips and queso. read more

Located on park Ave in Winter Park, this location is always busy! There is street parking and neighboring lots available for parking. I sat at the bar because it was busy and the food and drinks came out quickly. The Birria empanadas were ok, they had the flavor but were a little dry. I will very happy to say that my experience at Pepe's have significantly improved since my last visit 6 years ago. I arrived on a Wednesday evening with my colleague. We were greeted immediately and seated at in outdoor table as requested. Since we just missed happy hour (which was over at 5), we just settled for water. Complimentary chips and salsa were given. I decided to have 3 shredded chicken tacos (17 dollars), which included rice and beans. The tacos came pretty quickly and it was wonderful. The chicken was tender and juicy and had ample amount of lettuce and cheese. The hot sauce that I requested was indeed spicy and made me sweat a tear or two in front of my colleague. I substituted extra rice instead of beans. The rice was flavorful with some vegetables like peas, corn, carrots, and beans. And the tacos were filling enough that I was able to save one for lunch the next day. Our server was friendly and quick. There were no issues with the credit card machine this time, so our payment was taken quickly! We were in and out within an hour. The dining area was pretty small with a few tables inside, and some outside. I was very happy that there was a small heated lamp that kept us warm during the cooler night. I guess the last time when I arrived during the Cinco de Mayo fest 6 years ago, it was very crowded and the credit card machine issue was just a fluke. Thus, it was painfully slow. But now it was much faster and friendlier. Parking is free in the garage and some lots, but it can be difficult to park during the weekends. My lesson I learned is probably to pack a lot of patience when they have an event like the Cinco de Mayo, but I will definitely come back if they offer that event and have the mechanical bull rides again. Each dish we got had something special about it that really rivaled some of the best mexican we've had. The tostones were really good. The purple cabbage added an extra crunch, and the sauce on top was very good. The birria tacos were excellent. We went with soft corn tortillas for them. The chicken enchiladas were perfectly seasoned, and the steak from the steak fajitas was so good. the pickup was easy, service was good, and the food was all ready for us when we got there. I've been to Pepe's a dozen times - but never for brunch! We decided to give it a try since they feature bottomless mimosas and sangrias (say less... am I right!?) The sangrias were actually really good for being batched. Not too sweet and really refreshing. I decided to get my fave tacos, can't pass them up! But my boyfriend tried the churros and fried chicken - a little spin on the traditional chicken and waffles, and they were pretty tasty! This was such a horrible experience. I walked into the dining room to get a table and I opted to sit outside. Despite it being rainy and humid out, the inside dining room is extremely small and has a very uncomfortable/awkward feeling. The chips were brought to the table right away, which was nice but the portion was small. I was waiting for my friend and I was approached by multiple servers wanting to take my order and I told each of them I was waiting. Our main server was training and he was extremely hard to understand, almost like he was mumbling and he wasn't familiar with the menu. On Thursday's they have a skinny marg special with the addition of a shot. The training server didn't know what that was and the main server rolled her eyes at him. I ended up ordering the chicken rice bowl and I wanted to know what the vegetable mix was because I don't like peppers. The server training and the main server weren't sure what the vegetables consisted of. It ended up being a mix of carrots and peas, which was a standard frozen mix of vegetables. The rice bowl itself was tasty, but it was really greasy and salty. My friend ordered the Carnitas Platter with the intention of having leftovers. Her portion size was extremely small and expensive. There were also a few times during our meal, and once our plates were cleared, that another server came over to our table to set chips down, but they were for another table behind us. Once we finished our food, they cleared our plates, walked by multiple times, while I made eye contact, and they never came to ask if we wanted our checks. About 15-20 minutes later, we were finally able to get our checks. From the service, to the lack of communication between the staff and the subpar food, I will not be returning. read more

We stopped in on Sunday for quick bite to eat. The bartender George was very friendly and attentive as could be given he was covering a large party while trying to cover the bar. We really enjoy the cute bar area hidden in behind the restaurant. Even though it was hot they had fans to help cool things down. The Jalapeno Margarita was very good and were the Chicken Tamales with Verde sauce. They were full of flavor and went perfect together. The only issue was bottle beer cooler was not as cold as it should be, so it was warm. The second draft beer was perfect. Seated fairly quickly outside on a Saturday evening which it was nice outside in addition to the ambiance and atmosphere; we received menus plus chips and salsa when seated. Ordered a passionfruit mojito by our friendly and attentive waitress, it was so tasty that another one was ordered. Also experienced the signature table-side guacamole that was fresh and delicious plus the Pepe's Ceviche that was very refreshing and tasty. Main course was the Churrasco but this cut was angus beef steak which is too thick for the churrasco cut I prefer but overall it was good; it was paired with yuca frita, cilantro white rice and tortillas. To start, the server was in training but knew nothing regarding specials, the menu, what things come with, etc. I asked about drink specials on Thursday and he knew nothing of the special and had to go ask. Plus we practically whispered the entire time and neither of us could hear him. We both decided against the Bite 30 menu going on at the time and ordered from the regular menu. I ordered the carnitas platter and I would not name this a platter. For the price, this was more of a lunch portion. The rice was pretty bland. Also the meat was just alright. I was pretty let down. Let's get back to service. We had about 3 different ti.es where servers were trying to deliver food to our table that wasn't ours. We waited for a very lengthy time to get the checks. The outdoor space is fabulous with dining in front of the restaurant and also an incredible patio through the side and back. The back has an open-air concept so you are covered from the elements and can enjoy the light of the sun and gentle breeze. The menu is huge and they have all the Mexican classics along with fantastic vegan and vegetarian options. A full bar and a great cocktail and margarita menu with also a nice selection of tequila shots. They even have Topo Chico mineral water mixed into alcoholic beverages.
