Dinner food and service was better than average. They have a delicious salad bar where you can build your own salad. I ordered the orange salmon on rice which was outstanding. My wife had the chopped beef which she thought was tasty. The kids had hamburgers and shrimp scampi which they were pleased with. We had arrived just before closing but didn't know it at the time. They served us quickly and had the check prepared but didn't rush us. We noticed on the way out that we had kept them an hour past closing, but they didn't allow that to impact our experience there. read more

This place is a half step above a Golden Corral with overpriced steaks. We arrived while on the tourist run while staying at the Fairfield Marriott next door. The hostesses, two young 20 year olds greeted us enthusiastically and said it would be a 15 minute wait for a table. I asked if we could go to the bar area while we waited and she said only if you sit at the bar, which had about 12 seats. We found 2 seats together, ordered a drink each. About 20 minutes passed and no word about a table, I went out to the hostess to inquire and was told she had already came out to the bar and called my name repeatedly from the entrance of the bar and didn't get a response. So we were bumped to the bottom of the list. I let her her know we never heard her announcement from the other side of the bar and would appreciate a table as soon as possible. We received some prompt attention and we're seated in a booth. The food was less than appealing. My wife ordered Shrimp Scampi which came void of pasta. When she explained to the waitress that that was very unusual the waitress to knowledge that they receive that feedback frequently. My steak, which was a ribeye was thin, undercooked and chewy, and a chore to eat. Golden Corral has it down much better than this place. It was evident after going past the grill and kitchen that they hire a bunch of hack cooks and there isn't a chef to be found. Maybe the chef had been abducted years ago. Ate here at the invitation of local hosts who said it is the best in town. If that's true, I feel very, very sorry for them. Our experience started in the parking lot which reeked of cow manure from the stockyard on the other side of the train tracks. Authentic perhaps, but not appetizing. The entrance to the restaurant was dingy and dirty. Inside there was an odor that I couldn't place, but it was unpleasant. The window shades were drawn tight and the lights turned dim, hiding the well-worn and not-too-clean state of the furniture and carpet. It was also very loud. Service was generally inattentive. Our orders were taken quickly and then delicious warm fresh bread was delivered along with dinner plates for those persons partaking of the salad bar. But no bread plates. So two of us had to butter our bread while holding it in our hands and continue holding it between bites (there was NO WAY we were going to let it touch the table). Entrees took a half-hour to arrive. One was OK, the other less so, but the onion rings were good. Back home on the east coast we get great burgers and steaks made with grass-feed beef. But here in a cattle-town, the meat seemed no better than something out of the meat aisle of a discount grocery store. Disappointing. We skipped desert. Will not be back. Ever. read more

Being in Roswell there are limited places to enjoy a nice meal and receive good service. I love the food and service I receive. The only thing that irritated me was the customer service from the General Manager Zac Tischhauser. I've been in the service industry and social work for many years and the way he talks down to his staff and clientele should not be aloud. On Mother's Day I was talking to my family and mentioned they shouldn't have called us until ready do to having 2 elderly people with us who find it difficult to stand. He butt into our personal conversation and talked back saying they hadn't called us basically calling me a liar. Today he asked me and a friend to leave even though no disturbance had been made. He needs to learn professionalism and customer service. read more

I love a good steak and know my meat the way some know wine. I Had the Ribeye and it was tough and under seasoned. The Cesar Salad had too much dressing and for the most part was completely underwhelming. It appeared as though the major draw for this place was the salad bar, which I passed on. It is my recommendation to pass on this one, I have had a better Ribeye at Applebee's or Chili's. I know that this chain is well known in many small towns throughout New Mexico. I would have expected better. Oh and to boot the "steak fries" were under seasoned potato wedges. I would suggest trying another place. read more

This place has the best salad bar I have ever seen, with a great variety of food. My vegetarian daughter really enjoyed the salad bar. If fact we all did too. All of our meals were very good, service was great. A bit pricey but would eat here again. Oh! And let me not forget that we got a 10% discount coupon from the Towneplace suites Marriott hotel. read more

Got into Roswell about 6:30PM. Looking for some local restaurants only to find many of the ones that were recommended are closed on Sunday night. Many can't serve alcohol on Sunday without a special license. Drove by the cattle baron and noticed the parking lot was pretty full so decided to stop. We were not disappointed. We used to like coming to this place b/c they have a huge salad bar and it was a convenient place to stop and eat before we go back to Carlsbad after shopping. During our last visit though we did not have a good experience. Our waiter was constantly coughing and hacking and I never once saw him cover his mouth! He was serving tea and I saw him cough in the pitcher! After that I wasn't sure I wanted to eat anything and we really should have left because an hour after we left the place my 6 year old got very sick and threw up. We have not gone back since. Best food ever. We always stop here on our way to Santa Fe. The salad bar is always fresh with a large selection. Just had the chicken fried chicken with green chili sauce, it was cooked to perfection, batter was light and crisp-yum. Chicken was moist and tender. The wait staff is very prompt and courteous. I definitely do not recommend. My husband ordered his steak medium rare and it was served rare. I ordered fish and chips, the special, and it was definitely not cod fish...it was catfish. First I have to say Our waitress Sparkles was a really good waitress! She was very attentive and took care of our needs! However my husband got the special menu bone-in rib eye, which was supposed to be the best steak on the menu. First it came way over cooked, after ordering it medium. There was no pink left. Sparkles saw it immediately and took it back. I ordered the filet mignon medium well, and while it was also over cooked, I didn't send it back. It took the kitchen easily twenty to thirty minutes to get my husbands steak out again, so by the time it did I was done eating. And I tried so hard to eat slow. So first he got to watch me eat and then I got to watch him eat. When he got it the second time, it was unevenly cooked, rare on the outside and medium well in the middle. We also had mentioned that we both had shellfish allergies and when we got back to our hotel we felt the itchy throat systems that come when a kitchen cross contaminates. We pass through Roswell several times a year and Cattle Baron is always one of our stops. We love the salad bar with lots of variety, the steaks are always good, and the service excellent. Our standard order is one filet mignon, extra rare, with loaded baked potato and an extra salad bar. We share the steak and potato and each attack the salad bar. Plenty of food for two senior citizens and we still have room for dessert. The bar is also very good and the drinks generous. Our only complaint is the corporate requirement of 100% ID check. Come on folks, I haven't been carded in 50 years! Still, we always return and I give it a solid 4 stars. read more

In town from Texas, looking for a good prime rib, got it here. Prices were exceptional. I've paid a lot more in the past at high end restaurants for the same quality food. Salad bar was amazing (only $3.95 to add one on). I give 4 stars instead of 5 because our server, while very sweet and accommodating, didn't know a lot about the food or the wine and didn't offer many suggestions. Cattle Baron's has an outstanding salad bar with fresh veggies and fruits, above average prepared salads, cheeses, desserts, and 2 soups. Don't miss the Pork Posole soup. They bring fresh baked bread to your table and we received excellent service. This is a bargain for all you can eat for $8. read more

The Oscar chicken was not edible and had a strange taste, I was only able to stomach 1 bite. The rib eye steak was cooked properly but lacked flavor. We filled up on the salad bar and bread. The Cattle Barons where ever are very predictable, a decent meal, not stellar but quite edible. Ordered rare prime rib came out medium. Asked waiter to see if they had rare or if this was the best they could do. Chef said that's as rare as we have. Actually quite flavorful and tender, I ate it and it was good not excellent. Asked for the most knowledgeable person they had for the wine list, everyone just looked at each other. Waiter said I'll give it s shot. As soon as he opened his mouth it was evident he knew nothing about wine. Lucked out & I picked a winner, 2016 Quilt Cabernet Sauvignon and it was very good for the price. Now for my Cattle Baron pet peeve! No house salad. My wife & I usually split the 12 oz. prime rib and want as extra side salad. No can do, you have to buy the $10 all you can eat salad bar, just Ps me off. We will be back because they are usually the best place in town to eat. read more

My husband and I went for lunch. The hostess (a young lady with beautiful long hair) showed us to a table. She made sure we were comfortably seated before walking away. Our waiter Will immediately came to take drink orders. For lunch, my husband went for salad bar and I ordered prime rib. The spread of salad bar was not extensive but adequate. There were two kinds of soup included in the salad bar; chicken with rice and seafood gumbo. My husband said both were delicious. He also like the garlic bread. The prime rib I ordered was tender, however if would be better if more flavored. Our waiter Will came several times to check on us. He was attentive and friendly. He made us feel at home. i live here and eat at cattle baron often as unfortunately it is one of the 2 best restaurants in town. the problem is, from one visit to the next, the experience ranges from bad to good but rarely great. my husband likes the salad bar, so that is usually the reason for our choosing it. the steaks are ok but never great. the atmosphere is great but the service is average. if you want a great steak, service and atmosphere, go to pasta cafe across the street. you will be happy you did. read more

Superb steaks but poor service. Decor is homey and the restaurant is quite clean. As others have noted, the salad bar contains many fresh items and is good overall. Stopped by on the way back home for dinner, and there wasn't much of wait when I came in, beverages were served quickly same as refills, I ordered their rib eye medium, it came out medium rare not a big deal, because it was still good, and their fries were great as well, and the salad bar came with the steak dinner as well so that was bonus, and they also serve home made bread which was good, and the service was quite well, if I came through again and was hungry for dinner I'd definitely would stop by again. read more

This has to be one of the best lunch/dinner restaurants we have been to. We only regret it only has locations in New Mexico as it is family owned. Jim, our waiter, was friendly, courteous and attentive. Steaks were delicious and grilled perfectly. Salad Bar had at least 50 items, all fresh and a good variety. We opted for a box for leftovers and tried the desserts from the salad bar... chocolate mousse with whipping cream, banana pudding, jellos and bread pudding. When they brought the box, it even included a fresh homemade dinner roll. We may just have to make another trip to New Mexico as there are several locations there. read more
