I was so happy to have had Caveat close to my hotel when in town for a work trip. I loved the coffee and vibes here so much, I plan to only stay in Homewood from here on out. A bold claim, no? Maybe that's all you need to know... but I love writing about coffee shops so don't stop here. I love real deal coffeehouses (yes, in a house) and it's so cozy in here. I didn't stay to work because every seat was taken both times I came in (late morning), so get here early or perhaps late, if you want a seat in the middle of the week. The baristas couldn't be nicer. They took their time and chatted with customers, a rarity in those crowded coffee chains. Do check out those seasonal lattes (I mean, for February, a cherry blossom latte? Say less). My favorite is on the regular menu, a salted rosemary latte and it's literally perfect. I adjusted the sweetness level to be less so, and I loved the notes of floral rosemary and coffee. Pro tip: skip the line and order ahead! read more

Caveat can get pretty busy, but they have lots of tables, as there is seating upstairs (main entrance level), downstairs, and outside. They have outlets at not all, but several tables, so it can be a nice place to bring your computer. Music isn't very loud, so not too distracting. Parking can be difficult sometimes - there are only a few spots behind the building and a few in the front. Other than that, there is street parking on the one way next to the building, or on 18th (main drag through downtown Homewood). They have a drive-thru, but it's a bit odd at first glance. You either enter from the one way street paralleling it or from the alley that runs behind the building. It looks like you're driving up onto the sidewalk! If the line of long, it might be a bit of a wait, so I wouldn't count on it if you're in a hurry. I always get an Iced Blueberry Vanilla latte, and it's ~$7. Their rotating seasonal menus have some pretty interesting combinations that I always like to try! read more

Had a really nice Saturday morning at Caveat Coffee sitting on the patio with an iced blueberry vanilla latte -- such a good combo and not overly sweet. It really did taste like a blueberry muffin. The patio had a relaxed, cozy vibe that made it easy to just slow down and enjoy the morning. Only downside was parking. I had to circle the block twice before finding a spot, so just be prepared if you go during a busy weekend morning. Thankfully, they do have a drive-thru option which is a huge plus if you're short on time or don't want to deal with parking. Definitely still worth the stop for the coffee and atmosphere!!! read more

Only reason it's not a 5 is the whole parking situation. Had to circle a few times before I decided to park a few blocks away and just walk. Noticed they had a good crowd of students and remote workers so assuming WiFi is good there. Got to sit outside and enjoy the day while having a productive meeting. This place is so cute and cozy! It's in a nice little downtown spot, not much parking. There is TONS of seating and it's very spacious. The coffee is so good. Food: We ordered a London Fog and Matcha Latte. Neither of the drinks impressed us. They both mostly tasted like milk. The London Fog barely had any tea in it, and there was not a speck of sweetness to it. From what we could see, the matcha powder used did not look very green or vibrant, and that was reflected in the drink's dull taste. Overall: We've heard great things around Caveat Coffee, but unfortunately, our first experience did not live up to the hype. This was a great find to get some work done. They have free speedy internet and plenty of outlets. Other coffee shops were stuffed, but this one had plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. I had the gingerbread latte that was very affordable and it was delicious. It wasn't the fanciest latte I've ever had... no latte art here, but for $5 it was great. The only disappointing thing was the absence of food. They have a shelf of what looks like Costco danishes individually packaged for $4.50 each and some kind bars. But I'm not docking any stars since it is a coffee shop after all. Everyone was very friendly and the bathroom was clean. HORRIBLE SERVICE. Maybe I forgot to mention horrible service, ridiculous prices for 1/8 of the size of Starbucks and stale WalMart pastries. Hygiene on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best in the business, CC is about 1.75. They keep the garbage can, right on top of the espresso grinder, which the kid there, paws into with his slimy hands, then bangs it on the repulsively fetid little garbage can...... When we asked if he could wear gloves, to make our coffees, he's said that, "I have never heard anyone ask that before," and that, "I don't have gloves, anyway." Then we asked if instead of using his dirty hands, if he could use a clean utensil. The manager was on the phone and the kid just stared at us. Needless to say, we got out of their like bats outta hell. It was empty, and there was old coffee stains all over every table. I suppose the manager didn't have water for cleaning, either, Regardless, one heck of a hell-hole of an experience. No need to travel if you want to experience a hell hole. Sufficed to go to CC. This place is a tiny coffeeshop on a somewhat congested block in Homewood and there are only 2 parking spaces for it. So I've never been inside. That's ok though because they have a drive thru and it's easy to just circle around and get coffee without having to get out of the car. Prices are about average for the quality. Made 3 or 4 bucks for a macchiato or cortado. The coffee itself is excellent. Service is quick, friendly and efficient. So, if you're looking for really good espresso drinks and you're not feeling the whole idea of going inside for the full cafe experience, you can get in amd out of here really quick with your beverage and without a lot of stress. Maybe I am projecting envy, because I have always wanted to be a barista, but I feel very intimidated by baristas in general, and I often feel like they give off a superior vibe. Anyway, Caveat's baristas are SO nice and really made me feel at home, offering suggestions and not judging me for my coffee ignorance. I ended up trying the Black and Tan, a mix of their draft cold brew and draft latte - yummy! And later, I ordered the brown sugar rosemary latte hot because I had a lot of studying to do, and I always get cold in air conditioned environments. They were both delicious! The brown sugar rosemary latte was more my speed, because a) I love herbs in my drinks, and b) I need a little more sweetener in my coffee. I also love that Caveat isn't overlit. There's nothing worse than having a ton of work to do, settling in at a coffee shop, and then feeling a migraine coming on because the lighting is too bright coming from one direction. If you know, you know. Caveat's lighting is a bit more dim, but there are lamps around for reading. If I was an animal, I would probably be a bat and live in a cave, because I can't handle too much bright light. Finally, I love Caveat's green velvet comfy couch. I can't abide a coffee shop that has austere furniture. Makes me want to leave as soon as I sit down. Caveat is doing it right! I just wish they had more parking. read more

I got the iced draft latte with the pecan sugar adding (I did not like that one, I tasted like a rubbing alcohol effect after words) really weird. I asked the person making it if they can change it for a vanilla draft latte. And that one tasted better but still a little off However My gf got the brown sugar rose Mary latte with oat milk (hot) and that one was amazing! This is my new favorite coffee house in Bham! I have introduced several people to this place and every one, from my Mom to my buddies, whether it be morning or afternoon, have loved this place, outside, inside, upstairs, or downstairs! Atmosphere - I love the VARIETY of seating options! Couches, comfy chairs, tables, and bar service all adorn the upstairs inside but the real jewel is outside! Comfy patio furniture to lounge in scatters the back yard and a few table/chair combos dot the back deck for whatever seating need you have. Service - They are always so friendly! Its like boom boom. Order, they are on it, and they are super nice while doing it. Thank you! Coffee - Their special is the draft latte. People love it and my friends have gotten multiple servings in the same visit. I have heard about Caveat Coffee for a while now. But I had not been until someone suggested it for a meeting. I had no idea how close it was to 18th Street in downtown Homewood. But it is just a hop, skip and a jump from one of the hottest streets in Birmingham. The location is really cool. But just like the rest of downtown Homewood, parking is a bit of an issue. If you can get it figured out however, definitely stop in. It is in one of those cool house/shops that are all along Linden. Very historic, warm and inviting. There ordering process you can do yourself on an iPad they have hooked up. That was great for me personally. I can be pretty indecisive. So having all of the options I can click on make it very easy. The staff was friendly and the coffee was great. I got the pecan syrup with my latte and it was very good. I got the 12 oz and really wish I went with the 16 oz. It was gone in no time. Plenty of seating and a great spot for a meeting (no loud music or anything). I will definitely add them to my future coffee rotation. read more

I'm stuck between giving them 2 stars or 3 because of the quality their coffee and drinks are. I used to come here for the vibes which are great! A good amount of sunlight and generally quiet with music obviously, but I'd love bigger tables as some of their tables are extremely small. However, every time I got their coffee, it just tastes like water. Their customer service is also not consistent. Most times it is young girls and I've had a few unpleasant interactions with them. We came here on a busy afternoon and got a cappuccino and campfire cold brew. The cappuccino had a great milk consistency and a basic yet plainly good taste to the espresso. While the cold brew had the right amount of sweetness, it was weak on the actual coffee front, being masked by notes of marshmallow and cinnamon. A cold brew that doesn't taste like cold brew is disappointing. The space is amazing and perfect for meeting with a friend or getting work done. This is one of those reviews you hate to write but you have to. This place has declined in quality so much so in the past year or so it has to be made know. Where even to start? Well first off is the staff turnover is an obvious concern. They can't seem to keep anyone employed for more than a few weeks. There's the drive through issue where it can 20-40 mins to get through it. Mainly because they take these ridiculously complicated orders when they shouldn't. Lastly, the coffee just isn't as good. Every time I visit Birmingham I have to pay a visit to my favorite coffee shop there. The coffee is great, I always get cappuccino. Its incredible that from outside it doesn't look like the space is huge but the place can fit many people. There is a bottom floor, patio and a backyard outdoor space. So, its not a spot you need to worry about if you are anxious about covid. The ambiance is very calming and just a great space to gather or get your work done. I'm a student and I study at a lot at coffee shops. This is one of my favorites in Birmingham! The coffee is strong and has a great flavor. The WiFi is reliable. Their decor is amazing! I love the feel here. Staff is super friendly and are good about helping you find a drink you will like. Also, their music selection is bomb. They have a good number of tables up against the wall and many outlets to use. I would recommend the iced vanilla latte with macadamia nut milk! There was one time that I got a latte that was only luke warm. However, that is the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. Would highly recommend coming here!! read more

This shop has really gone down over the years. It used to be a fun place to hang out. The baristas were very kind and the coffee was ok. But now they only take orders through a self serve kiosk and the coffee is trash and overpriced. This was once a fun place to spend time, but i no longer go here for coffee in Birmingham. It's not every day that you get to venture out in your own city and try a brand new coffee shop. Usually for me, that is relegated to vacations and travel. I have had the pleasure of drinking La Colombe coffee on a couple of occasions during my trip to New York City and Chicago. But to have another great espresso shot pulled in Birmingham is kind of a dream come true for us coffee lovers. They come so few and far between. I only ordered a single double shot of espresso but you can really gauge a cup of coffee in just a few sips of a seed. There's something about the aroma, flavor profile and the aftertaste that make espresso a great choice. Not to mention the afternoon pick me up. I'm now headed to conquer the rest of my day. Don't get me wrong - this place has the best coffee in Homewood downtown right now. I have actually never heard about a coffee being roasted in PA, but the one they are using is very good (and barista knows his metier). They also have quite pleasant interior, makes you wanna spend some time there and come again. Put the place has two problems. First one is limited parking. This is a general problem in Homewood downtown, and it is up to the city - not cafeteria owners - to fix it. But the second issue is definitely resolvable. They have no good pastry to complement their beautiful coffee. All they have right now is some boring muffins, a bowl with fruits and protein cookies. Place like this need berry pies, biscotti, jam-filled donuts and cinnamon rolls. This place isn't on my daily route right now, but I'll go there next time I'm in Homewood downtown. read more

Giving grace and 4 stars for having a drive thru and a great small vanilla latte. 3 stars was what my heart was telling me to choose. Negatives that have me driving elsewhere: Something that does not make sense is what they consider ethical when ordering a 16oz drink that comes with espresso versus a 12oz. You do not receive an additional shot of espresso like you would at every other coffee shop. You are paying for more hot milk which dilutes the entire latte to tasting like just that, sweet hot milk. It's very disappointing that they do not let every person ordering a larger drink know that they are only receiving more hot milk. Their explanation is that their machine does not make single shots, it only makes double shots. They should have invested in a machine that is capable of making 1 additional shot. It is not ok to let people order large drinks and not tell them that they are only paying for extra hot milk. Secondly, some of the staff show way too much emotion when you do not tip every time you go through the drive thru. You're taking my order, telling the people up top what the order is, taking my payment, putting a lid on my cup and handing it to me. Every time. That is exactly what the system is of ordering coffee. If I tip it will be based off of the last interaction and experience as well as current interaction and experience. Being denied $1 is not something to mumble, frown, and change posture and tone about. I am not tipping every time I get a drink and it's frustrating hearing and feeling the huff and puff from the employee when I say 'not today'. These things matter and make people want to go down the street. This place has more potential than it is tapping into and I hope that they take these observations seriously. The energy they create through interactions with their customers will either pull people in or push them away. Positives: The building is beautifully decorated and has the energy of a West Elm'ish vibe. (Although i rarely go inside because parking in this congested area of Homewood is a nightmare.) The employee that used to have a ponytail is consistent with his awesomeness. Great vanilla latte with a nice flow of bitter.
