Kind and helpful staff, great food, home-cooked style. My son said "There's a lot of old people…read moreeating here," and I told him that's how you know the place is good! Fried catfish was very mildly seasoned (good for kids), chicken fried steak was great, and fried green tomatoes juicy and crunchy: their name-sake, as the author of the book based her characters on family who lived just across the tracks. Highly recommend!

We walked right in, menu is a meat and three served cafeteria style. Restaurant was clean and buzzy with busing hospitality. I chose the catfish, hush puppies, cream corn, and mashed potatoes and gravy. My wife got the country fried steak, fried okra and mashed potatoes. We took our trays and chose a table, and we were immediately met by our waiter. He brought us Diet Cokes in a glass bottle and extra sauces. Super friendly. Dining room was decorated with historic photos and very clean. Catfish was crisp in outside and flaky white meat on inside. Hush puppies had som jalapeños with a nice bite. Mashed potatoes were fluffy with a warm brown gravy. Cream corn was excellent. Country fried steak was cubed steak that was breaded and fried served with brown gravy. Fried okra was hand breaded and cooked nicely. Yeast rolls were warm and buttery! No complaints all around! Highly recommend if you're in the area, you won't be disappointed!

It is like a magical French bakery/general store, tucked away like a secret garden. Am I in south France or Birmingham? HARD TO TELL I don't know if I enjoyed the treats more or all the visual delights. The treats were just amazing. I brought my husband and all of my kids so we got a nice sampling of goodies from the cases. It was all perfection. Cookies were crispy on the edges, appropriately soft in the middle. The almond cake was buttery and sweet, but not too sweet. Muffins were excellent. The food is so well done. The ambiance here? Extraordinary. Every corner, every ceiling tile, every display has been so thoughtfully curated. This place was such a treat for my eyes and my imagination. I could sit for hours and just enjoy all the clever ways furniture is used. My kids played in the little play area- even that was done so beautifully! The store had such a wide selection of cute tea towels and little gifts. If you want to surprise someone with a beautiful little happy, or birthday gift, or Mother's Day gift, there's plenty to choose from here! I rarely buy things from little stores like this, but I purchased several gifts for girlfriends and my mom and an apron for myself. It's easy to get caught up!

More of a simple southern antique style. Baristas were extremely helpful and patient as I pondered my order! I ended up ordering a delicious warm breakfast sandwich and a cold brew to drink with it! SOO delicious!! I am a sucker for a good breakfast and coffee! The menu was large and well diverse: they even had a cortado on the menu which I cant get at all coffee shops!   I am surprised not more people know about the place. I had never heard of it until I was scrolling through highly rated coffee shops on Yelp! The space inside is large and can seat lots of people! For being in Birmingham this surprised me; I feel like most coffee shops here are fairly small.    I also appreciated how relaxed and welcoming the environment felt. It would be such a great spot for studying, meeting a friend, or even having a casual work meeting. The music wasn't too loud, and everything felt clean and well-kept. Overall, I would definitely come back and recommend The General to anyone looking for a cozy, charming coffee shop with great food and even better service.

When I went to the counter, I took a moment to look at the menu, and told him it was the first time in. He took the time to explain the signature flavors, the various ways to order a drink, and even explained the different notes of the coffee beans they offered. I ended up ordering a vanilla cardamom cappuccino to go. The barista brought the coffee to my table, which I found extremely personable and kind, even though they had multiple orders to make. The coffee had great notes of cardamom and vanilla without being overly sweet, which I really appreciated. Even though I got it to go, the drink stayed warm for quite some time, and was in a compostable container. In addition to this, all UAB students actually get 10% off, just make sure to show your Blazer ID. One thing I noticed for future visits is that the tables are quite small, so it may not be the best place to do work or study, especially not in group settings. While it was a pretty quiet space that could be good for studying, the seating is not the most conducive to studying. In addition to this, Filter Coffee is located at 5 points, which makes parking difficult, but that is not the company's fault, just something to note if someone decides to visit. Overall, I definitely see myself going back to Filter and highly recommend it to anyone if they around the 5 Points area for the friendly staff, great coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere.

He had the breakfast bowl with grits, eggs, bacon, and biscuits. I had a scone and Chia tea with added cinnamon and almond milk. I ordered extra bacon because I ate most of his. The very sweet waitress or cook added fruit "to complete our meal!'' I had already tried their delicious tea during the Grand Opening, and before we left my husband decided he wanted some of that delicious pound cake (lemon?). But I can tell you this, everything was delicious, the service was superb, the restaurant was impeccably clean, the ambiance featured old school R&B, (a skilled jazz musician entertained us during the Grand Opening!), and I cannot say enough about that delectable butternut squash mini pie! It was the best dessert ever! The menu is filled with healthy choices, such as the avocado toast (my fav), and you will love the environment. I tried to visit on our Anniversary today and I sadly discovered that they were closed. But we'll be back tomorrow and possibly on Sunday, before 1! God bless all of you, and a special thanks to the Owner for the God-inspired vision. (Numbers 6: 24-26) Two Very Satisfied Customers!!!
