This was our first bed and breakfast experience. We stayed for 4 nights and were happy all the time. The bed was a comfort dream with the finest furnishings. The hot tub and shower were pure luxury! The decor was sweet and carefully chosen. You could tell that the owners take great pride (and have great taste) in their creation. We had a large upstairs, two room, high ceilinged suite with an ocean view balcony. There were two pretty fireplaces and plenty of closet space. Breakfast was cheerfully served in a charming room downstairs and cookies were left for us in the evenings. Fresh baked cookies. The Mankins family own and operate their own business with love and creativity - and it shows. There are 9 themed rooms, and I can't wait to try them all. read more

Have stayed here many times in the past and it is simply a lovely place. This time things were very different. Room and location are 5 star, but service was far below previous visits. First, I paid for the romance package, which was supposed to come with rose petals down the hallway to the bedside table with strawberries, flowers, and champagne. Instead, there were wilted roses, melted strawberries and the champagne just set on the closest spot when you walk in the room. No effort to make it special. Second, the food has went downhill. Undercooked and almost inedible bacon and French toast. Then they charged me $2 for an orange juice refill when the first cup was basically a shot glass. We also ordered milk ($5) to go with our cookies and that never showed up. Staff this time around felt very uninterested in being hospitable. I would not leave this review, but emailed the hotel after our visit and got no response, so here it is. Too bad. Firstly, the warmth of the people who worked there was so genuine, I have never felt so taken care of... We mentioned it was our anniversary, and everyone went out of their way to make it special... When we left after two nights to go home, I felt like I was leaving friends, hugs,laughter, stories and I knew this was something special. Secondly! The breakfasts were amazing! I found this B&B hidden gem on Expedia & it was well worth the stay. The room & bathroom were very clean, comfortable bed, & super quiet when hubby & I slept through the night since the rooms were soundproof. I love that they had a fire place, outdoor patio, & jacuzzi tub. mini fridge had water, soda, & adult beverage for charge. They also had a Keurig coffee maker & sink with drinkable water free of charge. Breakfast in the morning was served with pretty big portions along with baked muffins. A nice touch was they hung fresh baked cookies on the doorknob each night. The staff were surprisingly young but professionally trained well. They were attentive to your needs & great customer service. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a peaceful stay. read more

A literal nightmare! So disappointing! A couple weeks ago, I traveled north to spend quality time with family I rarely see and attend a concert with my wonderful friends, who had gifted me a ticket to Bonnie Raitt for my birthday. I knew it was going to be a special time, and I wanted to extend it a little and be close to them for a few days while they moved their elderly mom out of the home she had in Cayucos for decades. That's when I discovered that the Cayucos Sunset Inn was just two blocks away, and so I booked it through an app -- even though it was a little out of my ideal price range. Times are tight, but in my mind, it's worth stretching a little to keep my loved ones close. Then I looked at the website for the Inn and thought, "I could fall in love with this place." I mean, it appears to be pretty great, right? Some of the rooms look so special and romantic online, and I started to think this could even be a home away from home on my travels up the coast. On the off chance they might upgrade me, I reached out directly and inquired about changing to a room with a view for little to no money. My talk with the "innkeeper" was amazing! I explained that times are tight and I was on a budget, and she said not to worry, she'd see what she could do. She just needed to get permission for a low- or no-cost upgrade and she'd get right back to me. I then received this voicemail: "Hi Jesse, this is *name redacted,* the innkeeper at Cayucos Sunset Inn. We were able to upgrade you to an upstairs room for the same price. We have two different themes. We have a country style theme room called Palais and Paradise themed room called Paradis, so if you want to take a look online right now, I'd switch you to Palais, because it is our closest ocean view and I like that room. But either way, you wanna get back to me or text message this phone number. Let me know which room you would like. Thank you, have a good day. Bye-bye." I was elated! My trip had, seemingly, just gotten even better! A few days later, I hit the road. The concert and family time was incredible, but that's a whole other story. Fast forward to my check-in at the inn. When I arrived, the same person I had talked to on the phone warmly greeted me and handed me the intake forms. There was no verbal mention of any additional charge, and so I filled in my license plate info, signed it, and handed over my card for incidentals. Here was my mistake. Always read the form before you sign it. I take full responsibility for not having done so, but I maintain that since I had a recorded verbal agreement with the "innkeeper," I had no reason to believe I was signing to okay a $275 UPGRADE CHARGE! I later realized I'd been charged this large amount only after my card was declined at dinner. Embarrassing. But the nightmare was only just beginning. Home now, I called the inn to clarify the situation and see if they might reverse the charge, since I had been told via voicemail I would be paying "the same price" for my new room. Over the course of a week, two days of which I started by waking from nightmares about my finances, I spoke to four different staffers, reaching out specifically on days the manager was supposedly going to be at the inn. The manager, however, avoided answering my request for a simple phone conversation and also didn't immediately reply to my email. So stressful! Eventually she did reply and we exchanged emails. Despite having the full explanation from me, she denied me a refund, citing company policy. They had my signature, so too bad, SOL. Ugh. Whatever happened to "my word is my bond" or "the customer is always right?" What has happened to common decency? Look, I'm not in the habit of flaming a place, even if it's less than great. And honestly there's a lot to love about the Cayucos Sunset Inn, if they would just keep to their word. The breakfast frittata was decent, the view to the coast is good, the staff were all very attentive, and the tubs, bath products, and beds -- even if they look better than they feel -- are all fine for the price. Still, do you want to stay somewhere that treats even a single customer like this? You could be next, so consider yourself warned. So sad. read more

I made a bad review before and regret it. It was during a hot flash i guess. I am very sorry. This little place is actually amazing. I did not know that Inn rules were different than hotel rules. At any rate, my bad review is still there and i cannot get it off, although it will not be factored into the five stars. There is not one speck of dirt anywhere. You can eat off of the floors. The theme of the room is carefully thought out and i felt transported to a Bogart movie in which i was the heroine. I took a jacuzzi bath with a glass of wine. There was a fireplace! The meal was full of all sorts of surprises and i wish now in retrospect that i accepted the cookies, but declined them. You go Cayucos Sunset Inn! . I read other reviews and the one star guy had a lot of nerve and smoked in the room and had the audacity to write a bad review on these wonderful amenities. I think i will gift a stay there to someone special. read more

My highest recommendation. The breakfast at this bed & breakfast is above and beyond. Homemade, amazing, with a terrific variety of options. It is by far the best breakfast experience and food at any b&b we have stayed at. There is a super cute breakfast area and patio to eat on and very friendly service that made us feel so welcome. We stayed 4 nights and the experience was excellent & consistent throughout. Cookies at out room in the evenings, homemade and fresh, a bottle of wine on our arrival. If your looking for a small town with an amazing community this place is a must stop. You won't find a McDonald's or CVS only small family run businesses with friendly staff. Sunset Inn was the hidden gem along this beach route along the main road in Cayucos Beach. The breakfast was amazing and served exactly at the time selected at check in. I can't tell you how great the staff were they are so friendly and welcoming. Owners have made this bed & breakfast feel like you're in a different era. Custom made furniture is exquisitely designed and beautifully crafted. Beach access is with in a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Restaurants are very close and really never need to drive anywhere in this town. Recommend visiting the Brown Butter Cookie Company too! read more

Our stay last night in Morro Bay had me longing for our room and stay here. Beautiful grounds, incredible breakfast and cookies on our doorknob at night. We went kayaking one morning and left before breakfast was served so they packed a takeaway meal for us. They baked three different gluten free items in two days for me, I was so impressed. The room was very clean and spacious and my daughter called it fancy. I can't wait to come back! read more

This place is beautiful. Great location, views and room. Staff were friendly and the rooms very clean and updated. I loved the flooring and fireplace. There is a market close by and easy beach access. Some of the policies were a bit off putting. The breakfast was amazing although you had to eat in the dining room at a specific time with other guests Unless you wanted to pay $25 to have it brought to your room. You could NOT take it up yourself even though the rooms have tables and chairs Also they do not make up the rooms on the daily do to Covid, although you have to sit and eat with others without a mask, so no other Covid measures in place. My fiancé and I decided to take a trip up the coast to decompress after a stressful couple weeks. We found the Cuyacas sunset inn on hotel tonight and were sold on the description; complementary wine, hors d'oeuvres, milk and cookies along with a room "strategically placed for best sunset viewing". Upon arriving to the hotel we came to realize none of that was true. We paid $200 for one night yet could only be accommodated on a downstairs room with no view, although the upstairs was almost completely unoccupied. The wine was all at a steep charge and the hors d'oeuvres were nonexistent. The cookies were great but the milk was $5 a glass. Being pretty go with the flow people we weren't upset at this point just confused, so we brought it up to the staff Jolene, all she could say was "that's false advertising" and didn't offer us anything to bridge the gap of our expectations and reality. At breakfast the next morning we were prepared to chalk it up to a misleading post, but as I was checking my credit card I realized we were charged an extra $100 cleaning fee for our service dog. When checking in we let them know she was a service animal and would be staying with us, and when I brought this up to Jolene she said it doesn't matter we need to charge you anyway, service dog our not. Mind you that is illegal. After continuing to question the charge, I asked to speak with the supervisor who was insisting the fee. Jolene said she would get her and send her to our table. 10 minutes later she comes back and says the manger is not in today and we have to call back tomorrow. Now with no resolution we are on our way home and have to take time out of our work day to refute an illegal charge. Overall Jolene was kind and not at fault, there should be an operating procedure in place for customer service issues from management. The hotel itself was comfortable and we likely would have stayed again but the service in this regard is unacceptable. read more

We only stayed one night and it was a pleasure. Iris, the receptionist was very attentive and welcoming. The room was spacious and conveniently located on the main floor. We liked a fireplace in the room, it is electric and very easy to operate. Breakfast is served promptly at the time of your choosing, we had French toasts for breakfast and it was delicious, crunchy outside, moist and tasty inside. There are several good restaurants for dinner in a close proximity and we enjoyed an evening walk by the street. read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars because it was as just perfect, from the moment my boyfriend and I arrived and parked. The outside is very welcoming and just beautiful. This is the perfect place for a get away with your significant other. My boyfriend reserved the "Palais" suite and it was just perfect. The first thing you see in the suite were a living room with a fireplace, a bathtub with a jet spa, a his and hers sink and a private shower and toilet. The more you walked inside the room there was a big king size bed a fireplace in the bedroom and a balcony with a beautiful view. Filtered water in the room was the only unique and positive highlight during our stay at this bed and breakfast hotel. Beyond that it was a disappointing experience to say the least that didn't warrant expense of over $500 a night with the Romance package. The staff wasn't warm, welcoming or friendly. Their attitude towards guests was worse than what you'll get at a cheap business hotel chain. There was no sense of hospitality which is expected from a good bed and breakfast. Everything was the matter of fact and performed as a chore. My request was met with an eye roll when I asked for a tea bag as it wasn't available in the room. Food selection was limited and most things seemed store bought from the premade section. They do have a microwaves to nuke the food to lukewarm temperature. The small cheap TV with poor resolution quality was something out of some unrenovated Vagabond Inn motel. Even fresh fruits were stale, old and tasteless. Romance package with basic instructions wasn't followed and communication with staff wasn't seamless. Instead of putting rose petals on the bed they made sure there was plenty on them in the bathroom around the toilet and not actually on the bed. Today we are staying at Aloft hotel for $100 a night and is by far a much better experience. They had a helpful/friend staff, clean modern rooms, and a proper TV. read more

This place was perfect for a two day getaway trip. They give you a whole bottle of wine, warm cookies at night and milk or tea upon request. The room has free soda in the fridge and bottled water at cost. There is a reverse water fountain in the room. The jacuzzi tub is perfect for two people. Breakfast was not just a continental breakfast but a full meal with muffin that melt in your mouth. They also offer a pizza for cost in the evening. I only had one concern which I didn't bring to their attention. I found a few hairs around the tub and toilet. Due to covid I did my own disinfecting with wipes upon arrival. My husband and I stayed here for a weekend getaway. We were warmly greeted by the person who checked us in. We really liked the gourmet breakfast that we had. It was very quiet and cozy in our room. It's a small town but if that is what you are looking for then this is a good place for you to stay. We felt very taken care of when we were there. Lovely hotel right across the street from the ocean. Our suite (Palais), was upstairs and comprised of a sitting room and bedroom ( both with fireplace). We also had a lovely deck with an ocean view. Bed was very comfortable. Sitting room has a small pullout sofa but we didn't use that, so can't attest to its comfort. The location is close to the pier and shops. Staff is wonderful and the breakfasts were very hearty ( full breakfast not a continental). My only complaint is that the hotel created a smoking area off the back of the property and very close to our room . The smell of smoke was fairly constant if we had the windows open or whenever we stepped outside our room . We hated that. It ruined an otherwise great experience( and the reason for four instead of five stars). If smoke bothers you , make sure you request a room AWAY from that area. One more general note, Cayucos is colder than we expected- bring some warm clothes! read more

Visited this past weekend for some great cycling in and around the area. Rooms are spacious, fireplaces gives off great warmth and you can smell and hear the ocean- as well as a view! I am sure the hosts are wonderful, going by all the reviews. Unfortunately, we didnt get to meet them. We were there on Chritsmas eve. We were greeted by a girl/woman. We were not sure she was the owner or not. It seemed odd, she acted almost like she didnt realyy care that we had arrived. She went through the motions, but there was no warmth. Odd. We were there at 5:30. She did not offer us the wine, I asked for it. Then she reluctantly served us. I tried to ask questions, got very minimal conversation. She wasnt rude, but overall the experience didnt reallt match the great reviews of stay there. Anyway, breakfast was served on time and it was good. French toast was little burned. Note to owners, please appoint a substitute, that is more enthusiastic. Otherwise the decor and room was lovely. Location is good. Can just walk to restaurants. read more

We had a lovely 3 night stay in the Champagne suite. The suite was roomy, clean and well appointed, with a balcony overlooking the quiet street and the Pacific Ocean beyond.
