However, the…read moreShenandoah River State Park, down the mountain from well known Skyline Drive and its accompanying federal parkland, is by no means inferior. A rural drive leads to a visitor center, trails, an overlook, river access, and campgrounds. I had time for only a brief visit, but the views were majestic. It would be an excellent place to return for a hike. As with most of Virginia's state parks, there is a modest entrance fee, but I'm sure it's well worth it.

I had great phone signal which almost never happens on these excursions, and I loved making a fire in my fireplace and sitting on the porch with coffee for sunrise, which I could see from Cabin 11. This cabin also was at the end and felt private, even though I could see my neighbors (who had set up Christmas lights! How fun!) There's also a wonderful hiking trail right by these cabins, 10 and 11, the Red Tail Ridge, that was semi-short (2.5 miles or so if desired to create a loop with Big Oak) and had views of the river and Shenandoah valley below!

Our site was large, shaded and best of all level. No leveling blocks needed. Sites are gravel, clean and well maintained. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! Well stocked store, and they will make and deliver pizza right to your campsite. Typical KOA amenities, and they have a stocked catch and release pond on site for those who love to fish. Lots of activities for the kiddos, too. The road in is a little hilly and several curves, but big rigs shouldn't have any trouble navigating it - the signage on the road is great (funny sign on the road that said "1/2 miles Don't Give Up." Lol). We're more "state park people" in that we enjoy the space and solitude and we don't have kids traveling with us (just dogs), so we don't typically need all the on-site activities. But this week we needed full hook ups, and this park gave us that feel. With so much to do in the area, we didn't get to it all, so we'll be back and we'll definitely stay here again.

They have a trail you can go on that was nice but after 20mins my dog was ready to turn around. I never found out where that would have taken me lol. That was really the safest bet for walking him. There is many large rocks there. There isn't much grass. The pond is tiny.

You can see everyone and everything going on around you even though there are short fences between some sites. In fact, 2 camping neighbors kept coming into our site to get branches off the ground for firewood; very annoying. The bathrooms have a shower and toilet but no shelving to put your things, although there are two hooks to hang items. It's very dank and the faucets leak. Everything needs updating. They remind me of stalls to wash animals. I wouldn't advise going barefoot in the bathroom or shower.

The taunting, intimidation with K9 force, threatened entrapment and arrest was enough to NEVER come back!!! 11mins past "quiet" hour (10PM) a demand, from unidentified individuals holding the reins of a German Shepard, to turn the music off came from the dark. Which warranted a simple response from the family being asked "I'll turn it down, but not off." Two minutes later, the individuals identify themselves as the owners while on the phone with the Sheriffs department requesting they escort this family off premise. All knowing the compromising position that would put this family in. I question the integrity of any small business owners who put their patrons in immediate danger as they did that evening Our incident was unwarranted and unprofessional! If all rules were enforced in the manner that was exemplified that night, NO ONE would be allowed on premise. I'll list the few rules breached during our stay; rowdy group loud until 3am, dogs off leash, generators being used, underage drinking & lastly underage children working... I would HIGHLY recommend you stay elsewhere, for the safety of you, your family & friends!

Because it is a longer hike and the rock scrambling it makes it a harder hike than many others in Virginia. It's a hike you won't forget! Make sure to bring lots of water and snacks.

I've been wanting to tackle the Old Rag hike for quite some time. My friends from Outdoor Afro…read moreorganized a group hike. I couldn't resist! We began our hike at 0930. I've gotta say, I was surprised at our starting location. I didn't have to drive through the 'booth' and pay to actually enter the park. That was weird to me, but our hike leader explained that, during the busy season, rangers are on site to check for passes. So.... I assume you'd have to purchase a pass online and place it on your dashboard. I'm a Veteran so I have that pass so I couldn't tell you how that works. Right off the bat you're climbing. No easing into your hike, you're THERE, at elevation. Of course, the higher you climb the mountain the more elevation you gain, but at the start you're already gaining. There are a lot of false summits. You think you've made it to the top, but you're not there yet! Ha! Because it was January, the trees were barren, so I could see the vastness of the forest. There was a bit of ice, but nothing that impeded our climb. I had always planned to do the hike in fall, to see the colors, but this was great as well. It was a perfect day. And then there's the rock scramble-----AMAZING! I loved climbing over, under, and through the rocks. There are times you have to jump over a small gap or squeeze between rocks, but I was down for it all! I was on the trip with people who had done the hike before so that helped in a few situations where I could have gotten lost or didn't quite know how to get over a rock. Once we finally made it to the actual peak, the view was amazing! The entire hike was awesome! Some of the rock placements, like, how does a rock just sit in a certain spot, have you wondering HOW. It's that 'Awe' factor. We had some slower hikers and we didn't want to leave anybody behind. So, that brought us to the point where we were coming down in the dark. Luckily, I had my head lamp and so did many others. A quick note to be prepared for anything. Those worst case scenarios are possible. It's a GREAT hike and I'll definitely do it again with ONLY seasoned hikers.

After consulting their park map, we picked one that we thought was next to water. The stream depicted in the drawing was more of an unsightly drainage ditch. The overgrown brush next to it was full of thistles. Additionally, the quickest way by "road" to the bathrooms was through mud and lots of it. Trying to navigate through the grassy parts resulted in more mud. Having a pup, we were excited to let him try out the dog park. Another disappointment. It was mostly gravel with stagnant, standing water which we all know can make our pups really ill. Our campsite was mostly gravel. For tent camping, this is most uncomfortable. We were also disappointed to learn that our fire pit and grill were one in the same. It was cold that weekend. They do sell firewood in the store for $7 a bundle. We burned through five the first night because they're small and burn quickly. For $10, stop before entering the park and get a huge bundle from a private residence like we did the second day. They're located on the left. The stacks are at the street. We called the number listed and were told to just drop our money in the box. The park wasn't all terrible. The staff we encountered were all very friendly. Their store is also one of the nicest I've seen at a KOA. It's almost like a gift shop. Not their fault, but lots of late check-ins with truck lights so they could set up, barking dogs and children running around after 11 pm. We also did not enjoy the blaring 6 am alarm going off as well as their barking dogs ... again the next morning.
