It's been a few years since I last visited Cedars and man, coming back here brings back good memories of delicious Indian food. Even though the AVE is saturated with various Indian restaurants, Cedars is always worth the walk, even when it's a bit farther away from the AVE. Ideal for any sized groups, this is definitely a solid place to dine at if you have a large party and in some parts of the restaurants, it's cozy and intimate enough for dates or catching up with close friends. Came here with a friend and we ordered: classic garlic naan, mango lassi, lamb masala, chicken tikka, and this yummmmmmy ice cream dessert (I forgot the name sadly). Food = YUM. Absolute yummmmmm when it comes to the curries. Ahhhh, the burst of flavors will leave you craving for more. Highly recommend trying out the ice cream + condensed milk on it.....It sounds strange but trust me, it's a perfect thing to eat on a sunny day Food Portions = Most curries come with a side a rice. If you opt to share, I recommend getting at least 2 orders. Naan was hugeeeee. Prices = $10 - $15+ for the entrees and average prices for apps + drinks + desserts Parking = plenty of options (lot / street) Service = Friendly staff. I would dream about the Tikka Masala and my mouth would start watering. It was before before Covid since I was able to eat at Cedars on Capital Hill. I was told they are the same owner and always wondered why the sauces were so different between the two sites. First off we come in and they have no menus. We have to scan it in the server won't help you with anything because she doesn't know anything. You have to put in that you want to talk to the server on the online menu. They take forever to come if you need help. But the food came out in the timely manner. The reason I gave it two stars is because the garlic naan, some tangy sauce and the mango chutney were delicious. This pickle dish that we got was the most disgusting thing ever. I've never had pickles that were so incredibly hard. And I love pickles so it's weird when they're like rock hard. So this is where it gets disgusting. We're checking out. First off they took forever to come and check us out. Our server gives us stuff to take the bread home. Well we wanted to take the sauces home because they were basically full and well over 8 oz of each left. She comes back with a 1 oz container of each. I said I don't want to waste these. That's a waste of money and to throw them away. Stupid. She said oh no they won't get thrown away. I said wait. You reuse these. She nervously laughs and said sometimes we reuse them but not always. I must have looked horrified because I was. She quickly ran away and then came back with two more one ounce things of each. So we left with just maybe 2 oz each of each of the sauces. Hopefully they don't reuse the disgusting pickles which I'm sure they would because how would you know that somebody was reusing pickles or sauce. I would never go back there. I mean we double dipped on one of the sauces. My kids are always sick. One of you might be getting sick because I might be sick secretly. ‍ Also, the water was literally placed in a window facing the front area. So like a foot away from us. I could be talking and spitting and eating and spinning my food. Sneezing and coughing into all of your guys's water that goes to your tables. Which is disgusting. I loved Cedars for many years, but like many things, the pandemic seems to have brought about changes in Cedar's food for the worse. I noticed at the start of the pandemic that the size of the take-out container used for my take-out order of ShiKorma was half the size it used to be. At first I thought that maybe they ran out of the bigger containers because everyone was getting food to-go at the start of the pandemic. Almost four years later, the size is still half and the price went up two dollars instead of down. It is very spendy for the amount. The final straw is that my last three orders of ShiKorma all tasted like coconut curry. I assume there was a change in ingredients to lower cost. I can't eat this new recipe - it is cloyingly sweet and all I can taste is coconut. I will miss Cedars, and hope to find good ShiKorma elsewhere. read more

Looking for the most popular Indian place to eat during your visit to the UW? Look no further because Cedar's is the place for you. This is my go-to place for Indian food on the Ave. LOCATION Located pretty far up the Ave but that doesn't stop us college kids from dining here. If you don't want to trek that 15 minute walk, you can easily take the bus. ATMOSPHERE The many times that I've been here, it wasn't as busy. This means the noise level wasn't as bad, and you could easily hear the person across from you. In addition, the place is a bit dim even for the daytime. However, it's not dark to the point you can't see what you're eating. WHAT DID WE TRY? Vegetable Mango Curry with the spicy level at 3/5 stars. The mango curry was very sweet. By having a high spice level, it balanced out the sweetness of the rest of the dish so that it wasn't overly sweet. If I were to order this dish again, I would like to try 4/5 stars because it was not very spicy. I tried my friend's Vegetable Coconut Curry with 3/5 stars as well and it was a lot spicy than my Mango Curry. The rice that came with the dish was a long grain type of rice with some spices I am not too sure about. The rice, in my opinion, was on the drier side, but that could be so that the curry didn't make the rice soggy. The Garlic naan is super good and super inexpensive (like $3-$4 for a big piece). It was chewy and glutinous while being nicely seasoned. When you order any of their naans, it comes with sauces that you can add. The green one is like a savory cilantro sauce while the red one is a sweet sauce (I'm not sure what the flavor is because I was not too big of a fan). SERVICE When we walked in, it took roughly a minute or two for the employees to seat us. The place is pretty big and they utilized their space well. They have lots of seating available so I am assuming they would be able to accommodate large groups. In addition, this means customers would not have to wait long in order to be seated. Overall I give this place a 3.5 stars because the food is good and the service isn't terrible. If you go, I would recommend getting their garlic naan and their mango curry if you like something sweet and savory. There is a private parking lot, a bit cramped but enough for a few cars to fit in and to avoid street parking stress. They are dine in for both outside and inside, but we chose to dine in inside. As my cousin and I entered, we were greeted warmly and were told to pick a seat anywhere we liked. Both our waiter and waitress were polite, kind and courteous with us as this was our first time coming in and did not rush us at all! We even got a free mango lassi as we were going to share it but our waiter said he would just give us another one on the house. The lunch hours are from open to 3pm, which we were able to get to and the choices are interesting as you can have a vegetable or chicken option for any of their lunch specials. Also their naan that comes with the lunch special is enormous! We orders the Cedars naan as well, which was also large as well. The mango lassi was the best one I've had as it tasted like fresh mangos and was a delicious creamy drink. Our curries were both delicious and I do want to return to try their other items as I was blown away by the flavors, freshness, and speed of our food. The customer service has been so pleasant and I truly hope this place thrives. The bathrooms are clean as well! A great spot for some delicious Indian cuisine. read more

Mango curry - this has the sweet mango taste along with the exotic indian curry flavors mixed together with chicken to make a sweet, savory, delicious curry. Butter masala chicken - great tasting curry and tender chicken. I think its a bit too heavy on the chicken and the chicken pieces are often too large for the meal proportion. Kheer - i would describe it as rice that is soaked in a creamy, sweet, cold liquid. It was okay. I prefer the finer grained rice version of kheer. Cedars nan - this is the best nan we've had. Oh Cedars...I feel like we are old friends. I heard of Cedars from Day 1 of living in Seattle. It took me 9 months of living here to finally get around to trying it. I'm pretty much a creature of habit, and I stick to what I like. But good friends, whose recommendations I trust, encouraged me to try Cedars in the U District. I love this place! Cute patio for outdoor dining, and good seats inside for people watching. I went with my staples: chicken tikka masala, palak paneer with aloo, vegetable pakoras, and garlic naan. Pakoras were good (onions, potato, and cauliflower), chicken tikka masala was spicy and plentiful, and palak paneer was thick and delicious. The garlic naan was gorgeous coming to the table (see picture), but it was too crispy for my liking. I like my naan buttery and soft. The wait staff is super friendly; however, I did not see the waiter after our initial order. I did get great service from the bus staff, though. They kept my water full and assisted with getting the bill paid promptly. I can't give this establishment 5 stars simply because the area is a bit dodgy. I have been in the area several times to eat, walk around, get tattoos (haha), but I never considered it unsafe until my visit to Cedars. When I was pulling out of the parking lot, a group of guys came running by, one fell, and the others started kicking and beating him up. Had I not been a somewhat helpless female, I would have stopped...but man, it was brutal. Once I noticed that, I started noticing other questionable characters hanging around the area. When your stomach begins to crave naan and curry... you know that it's time to hit up an Indian restaurant. And here I was, at 50th making my way to Cedar's restaurant. It's in this cute little house looking structure, and it's on the second floor. The place is decorated with Christmas lights, which I think is a little out of season. I feel like an Indian place could really do with more gold and red tones, but I'm not gonna rate the place by the way the place looks - only how the food and service was. We were seated by the window and were given our menus. We knew what we wanted and waited for a waiter to come to take our orders. It took a long while for the waiter to come to us, which was a bit of a bummer, but eventually they did notice that we were trying to eye down one. Indian food is usually very filling so my boyfriend and I decided to share a plate and a side of naan. We ordered the garlic naan because it was only $2.50 for a huge piece. We then ordered the famous chicken tikka malasa. Our garlic naan came and that thing is gigantic. I know you hear from almost every Indian restaurant that the naan is big, but this is the biggest one I've seen. I've been to Shalimar and Taste of India, but I think Cedar's naan was slightly bigger than Taste of India's. However, I think it lacked the garlic flavor that Taste of India had. None the less, naan is naan, and that naan was delicious. I really liked how they gave you the brown and green sauce (not even sure what it's called) in it's little container for you to dip at your own will. Places like Taste of India give you a small little dish that contains the sauce and you always want to have more. Here at Cedars, you can use as much or as little as you want! Then our Tikka Masala came out. And it smelt so aromatic. We got it as medium hot, and unfortunately, it failed to live up to even medium. It wasn't spicy at all - which was unfortunate because I wanted to eat some curry with a kick. None the less, the curry was really good still. The chicken was made just right and was succulent and juicy. I would say this curry was just as good, or even better than the other Indian places I have gone to. This place definitely is a great place to go. Even though I like the atmosphere and food of Taste of India better, this place serves as a good second to Taste of India any day. read more

My husband found this gem and we were there shortly after they opened on a Saturday. We started with the hummus plate which was good, the warm pita was delish. Next the paneer pakora with chutney was out of this world! Then the paneer naan was enormous but we also got plain naan but couldn't eat it because they were so large. I ordered the dal soup which I loved with the paneer naan dipped in it. My husband ordered the butter chicken and my son ordered the mango curry with chicken and they both loved their dishes. Mmm, Cedars. We have ordered takeout from this place for years. Hubs and I usually get the chicken tikka (a must-order in my opinion), vegetable jalfrezi and/or vegetable vindaloo with a side order of vegetable samosas and garlic naan. We've ordered from a few Indian places in North Seattle and this one is the best by far. Everything is always delicious and the flavors are consistent. Portions are big - you do not need to order extra rice! Chicken in the tikka is tender and you get a nice assortment of vegetables if you sub those in. Pick-up time is normally quick too; we ordered on a Saturday night and it was ready within 20 minutes. If you are in NE Seattle I definitely suggest going to this place! This place is my family's favorite Indian Restaurant! We live in Florida now but when we come back to visit this is on the checklist of things to do. Portions are big and the naan is bigger than your head! You will need to go boxes guaranteed. The samosas are packed full so you could probably share one with a friend. Flavors are unique as is every Indian restaurant. No one place is the same in taste as the other, we like the taste of their curries/masala sauce here because they are a tad sweeter and more creamier than most. I'm from out of town and this is one of the places I know I have to stop by whenever I'm back in the area. Their huge naan, perfectly cooked and seasoned curries and meat, fragrant rice... you can't beat it. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala with two stars spice level, while my cousins got an assortment of different tikka masalas and butter curries. We got four garlic naan to share (which may seem like a lot considering the portion size of each naan but we loveeeee our naan!!) Food came out quickly after taking our orders and employees came around to check up on us to make sure we got all of our orders. Ugh. you can't go wrong with any of the dishes here. We ordered via Grubhub for the first time. It was good but not our fav. We ordered: -Chicken Vindaloo -Coconut Chicken Curry -Palak Paneer -Eggplant -garlic naan -vegetable pakora -gulab Jamun The good. Portions were HUGE. I was stunned. The chicken dishes were good. The chicken was tender. Garlic naan was good as was the pakora. The dessert was pretty good and a standard gulab jamun. Things we didn't like: the eggplant was smoked/charred which is not the traditional way to make Indian eggplant dishes. It's the way you make middle eastern dips so perhaps that's why it was made this way since the restaurant serves both cuisines. It also had an insane amount of peas. The saag paneer was ok but lacked flavor. Overall it was ok but I've had way better Indian food elsewhere. It's worth a try though! read more

Great Indian food! I'd probably give it 4.5 stars if it were an option, but I'll round down for this particular review - but I think it's more of a preference issue than a quality issue. Ordered butter chicken and palak paneer. Both were decent, though both tasted a little sweet than I prefer/am used to. The other people I ate with loved it though. One thing we all agreed on was that the garlic naan was amazing. It was HUGE compared to what you get from most places (easily the size of a medium pizza), and tasted delicious to boot. read more
