A local Indian favorite new University of Washington that my friend recommended we visited after seeing a movie nearby! We were seated quickly and ordered our food on the table using a QR code. The food came SO fast, in about 5 minutes! I ordered the channa aloo, which is potatoes and chickpeas in a orange curry sauce that comes with rice. My friend got the chicken tikka masala. We both loved our dishes, and I left with enough leftovers for a second meal the next day. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Checking in on yelp also gave us 15% off of our bill! This looked very promising but was unfortunately beyond disappointing. The fish tikka kebab app was like rubber. The tandoori chicken was clearly reheated. The bhindi was most likely from a frozen package. The butter chicken sauce was good but clearly the pre-cooked chicken was thrown in at the end and therefore not at all flavorful. One of the better restaurants in U-district. We were a party of 5 and came at ~4:30 for an early dinner. We were seated immediately and were told to scan the QR code for the menu and it's where you order your items. But you can also ask for a physical menu, which I opted for. It feels more human. Overall, items were rich in flavor and portion sizes were good. All items we got were medium spicy, which was definitely catered towards the American palette. I'm terrible with spicy foods, but I found it needing more. Baba ghannoj - roasty, smooth, and packed with eggplant and sesame flavor. It comes with 1 large pita bread which is barely enough for all the sauce. So I'd recommend asking for another pita or getting some naan Baigan Bhartha - my new favorite way to enjoy eggplant. The eggplant is soft enough to melt in your mouth but also has the right amount of firmness to have a satisfying bite. If you come here, this is a must get item. Tons of complementing spices, perfectly cooked veggies, and just enough sauce to soak up with rice or naan. Tandoori chicken - big pieces of chicken thigh and drumsticks. Very tender and juicy pieces of meat and it comes with rice and veggies. Delicious item and pairs nicely with the Raita Desserts - we got Kheer and Gulab Jamun. Specializing in Mediterranean, Indian, and Pakistani dishes, Cedars is one of the best restaurants in this genre of food in the Pacific Northwest. I'd challenge anyone to find one with better service or better cuisine. I use to come to Cedars once a week or so when I lived in the area. I moved with my wife and child to San Diego for a number of year, and we could not find anything nearly as wonderful as the experience with Cedars. Now that we've been home (Seattle) for a few years, we are delighted to see the ownership of this wonderful establishment was passed to the caring hands of people who treat their customers as wonderfully as they treat their food. Sadly, we live in another part of Seattle and can't visit as frequently, but it's a genuine treat when we can. I asked my wife what she would like for our anniversary dinner and I was so glad she picked take-out from one of our favorite restaurants. (It's still the COVID era, so we aren't eating-in.) SERVICE Gracious. Friendly. They are the epitome of kindness on every level. FOOD Over the years, I've tried nearly everything on the menu. My favorites pre-meal favorites include the spinach naan with the cilantro dip, the chicken pakoras, which are heavenly perfection, the vegetable samosas, but you can't go wrong with any of the appetizers. I wish I could order everything on the menu at one time and just feast, but I went with the every-delightful Royal Biryani Chicken, the classical Mughlai dish cooked with chicken curry, basmati rice, saffron and cashews. Hours later, I can still taste the savory flavors. Of course, I couldn't resist a little of my wife's amazing Vindaloo Chicken, though hers was mild and I like mine as close to authentically spicy as possible. The American palate is not as developed for such refined authentic seasoning, but I personally love it. It warms my heart, in more ways than one. I am so glad to see Cedars is still continuing to survive this COVID status. Oh, and one thing to note - please, please, please, order your own pickup rather than through delivery services. Delivery companies employ people, which is great, but they take a huge cut of the business away from restaurants, which is also hurting their survival. You can order online for pickup and the restaurant retains 100 percent of the revenue, which goes into paying their staff sustainable wages. Also, be generous with your tips. Independent restaurants don't have huge amounts of capital. Their margins are often very thin, so the tips really nurture them more than you realize. read more

Indian food has so many different exotic spices and flavor combinations which is why I absolutely love it. All curries have their own unique flavor profiles and textures. I also have a soft spot for naan and all of its pure, doughy goodness. Cedars has coupons for UW students in the Survival Student Handbooks and also on the back of Safeway receipts. For both, the current deal is buy one entree and two drinks and get a second entree for $10 or less for free (or they will just discount $10 off of your order if your second entree costs more than $10). They also have lunch specials which include a curry, rice, and two pieces of naan for $10. Unfortunately, you cannot use coupons on the lunch specials so you have to order off of the main menu if you want to get the deal. Their menu is pretty extensive and offers a variety of vegetarian, seafood, and meat dishes. I definitely wanted to try something outside of the ordinary because let's be honest, you can get Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken even at Trader Joe's down the street. I'm not familiar with all of the different types of Indian curries, so I did some intense Google searching. After doing my research, I settled with a 3 Star spice Rojan Josh with paneer (cheese). The menu described it as a rich brown curry with tomatoes and spices. I also ordered a hot chai tea to get the coupon deal with my friends. The hot chai tea for $2.95 came with unlimited refills so it's really good deal. My friend got the iced chai tea for the same price, but for whatsoever reason, hers did not come with unlimited refills. Additionally, we ordered a plain naan to split between the three of us. Service was very prompt. We got our naan within 10 minutes. It was HUGE- easily the size of a pizza. It was warm, chewy, and flaky. It also came with two sauces- a sweet red sauce that tasted like fruity strawberry or cherry jam and a tangy and savory green sauce that had yogurt and mint in it. They both complemented the naan well, but the naan was also flavorful enough to eat on its own. The Rojan Josh was creamy and had the perfect curry spice combination. You could definitely taste the tomato in it. It was spicy, but I probably could've gone with a 4-Star if I wanted to. The paneer was smooth and had the texture of firm tofu. It came with a plate of rice, but it was kind of odd because the rice was mostly white with a few yellow grains covered in turmeric. It wasn't anything exciting, but that was to be expected since the rice is just meant to be a medium for the curry. Our total bill came out to $45 plus tip with the coupon for the three of us, which is pretty good considering we got naan, two drinks, and three entrees. My wife and I live on Bainbridge Island, and as a consequence don't often get to the U-District. We decided to head to Cedars before the concert we were seeing. The boat was late, we arrived late, and yet they still found a lovely table for two and were as friendly as could be. We had dolma (yes, they have some great near eastern food as well as Indian), delicious but reasonably priced wine, perfectly cooked tandoori salmon (who knew that was a thing?), and an elegant curry. Our service was friendly, efficient and well just delightful. We will be going back, but this time we will wait for a table on the balcony. What a cool spot! read more

I have lived here for 25+ years and some of my fondest memories was coming to Cedars with friends in those early years. However, it changed ownership many years ago and it has NOT stayed the high quality place it used to be. I came here tonight for dinner (and a bit of nostalgia) after working a long shift at the nearby hospital - yes, dinner for 1 tonight. I ordered the Butter Masala with paneer (medium to medium hot), an Aloo Parantha (potato stuffed pan-toasted bread) and a Mango Lassi. I confirmed with the server that the curry came with rice. It was almost a joke to see the tiny side plate with a thin layer of rice that was served though (maybe punishment for eating alone??). Although the rice was tasty the portion was... um, lacking. The curry was a disappointment too - extremely sweet and not at all spicy. Not authentic. Having lived in India for my childhood I left feeling like it was at a level I might expect to find in a bad train station restaurant. Since the food had no spice I tried to get some hot pickle (achar) on the side - I usually prefer hot mango or lime pickle. The server was obliging and brought some mixed pickle (they didn't have any other, but the oil tasted old and was also a disappointment. And to top it off they charged me almost $4 for it when the bill came. The only good part of the meal was the Aloo Parantha and the Mango Lassi - both were delicious and excellently prepared. (These raised my review from 1 to 2 stars.) i also appreciated the speed and attentiveness of the service. However, all said, I found the recent 5-star reviews that people have left to be surprising - maybe they don't know any better? Or maybe there's a different chef on other nights? Either way, that was not my experience tonight. I paid $38 dollars for this meal (before tip); and left feeling nauseous and questioning if I now had food poisoning. I really loved this place! Came here on Friday night and got seated right away. Ordered samosas, chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo and garlic naan. The samosas were big and very tasty we loved the mint chutney and tamarind sauce served with them. The naan was massive and was fresh out of the tandoori Oven. I haven't had a naan like this in a long time! DELISH. The chicken tikka masala and the lamb vindaloo were a good portion and they didn't skimp on the meat. When I reached they gave us extra food and cheery on top was their baklava and Falfel plate , it was delicious . I've been coming to Cedars occasionally for the past 4 years now and their service is incredible (probably one of the best in the area). They are quick and attentive. On two occasions, they did mess up my order. However, they quickly owned up to it, remade my order, and sometimes even refunded parts of my order. Giant Naan bread with the dipping sauces and dishes to suit just about anyone's taste. Their prices are average and I've never really had to wait for a seat. I love their Chai tea but will note that it weirds me out a bit as it's made in mass quantity and served from a coffee pot...there's been times I've wondered if it has sat too long... My favorite dish would be their Tikka Masalla. Perfectly spiced and great overall flavor. Nice tip - you can order a side of cooked veggies for like $4.50 and it's a large portion if you're looking for a side dish that isn't a full veggie meal. Had a chance to try Cedars for the first time at a UW event they catered - their food was SO good I had to try it again! I got their butter chicken, saag paneer, and garlic naan. Their butter chicken and naan are easily some of the best I've had in the US. Alongside their amazing food, their customer service is top-notch. The folks at the counter are super kind. Of course, I had to go back soon after my first visit. So, a couple weeks later, on my second visit, the owner even offered me masala chai (which was delicious!), and they were just the nicest people ever. Cedars has definitely become my go-to for Indian/Pakistani food near the university. They also offer a smaller selection of Mediterranean items (around 20% of their menu) and I've tried their baba ganoush and pita - they was delicious too! Cedars tries to cover more bases by offering both Indian as well as what it terms "Mediterranean" selections like hummus and falafel, but if you read no other part of this review, stick to the Indian side of the menu and you'll have the better experience. I came here with a group as part of a conference at the adjacent University of Washington, and they were very accommodating for our party of 10, including being amiable about our request to split up the bill, which I know must've been a bit of a headache. Our food also came out notably fast, in spite of the large group. I ordered the combination platter with hummus, baba ghannoush, falafel, and pita, all of which was underwhelming. The pita was served cold and tasted store-bought and pulled directly from the fridge, while the falafel was reminiscent of the pre-made dry mix that you can get at the grocery store when you want to attempt making them at home. Thankfully my fellow diners were willing to share some of their Indian dishes, and the quality and flavors were a night and day improvement. If you are a vegetarian, the tandoori paneer is a delicious and surprisingly ungreasy alternative to a meat option, especially when paired with the accompanying grilled vegetables. Veggie pakoras were also scrummy, and the clearly fresh-baked portion of naan was as big as the tablecloth and enjoyed by all.
