Hands down best food in Ferndale. If you are within 20 miles of the place I would say make the trip and go visit. Make sure to try the "I love breakfast" burger. Well as I write this it's taken about an hour just to get our food so can't comment on food quality sadly. Well the food finally arrived well most of it anyway. This is great american diner breakfast food. The breakfast sausage is a premium product, perfectly cooked, just a little fat to get the right mouth feel and the dense meaty texture is professional. The biscuits, although tasty and perfectly cooked, are a bit cakey and not flaky enough for my taste, and the gravy is a work of art. The portions are huge so either share it or dont eat anything else for the day. This is everything good about breakfast and the servers were great too. Well it looked like a great place to grab a lunch today! We were seated almost immediately and given drinks and our order taken. 30 minutes later no food. Then I notice that the 3 families that were seated well after us were being served their food. We stopped at Cedar's during our way back from Vancouver down to Seattle and it was just the perfect little stop. It was my first time in Ferndale and I was enamored by the enchanting feel of the little city. Cedar's fits right in with the typical "Old-American-Feel" of the town. We ordered a burger and a french dip sandwich. Both were great and there were so many choices to choose from that you honestly can't say there isn't something for everyone. The price is also perfect and you'll feel right at home with how friendly everyone is. We did have some trouble getting our waitress' attention, even though it was not a busy time of day. Other servers helped us out so we appreciated that. Don't expect that you're going to a "trendy" shop or that you're going to have food deserving of three Michelin stars. Top notch breakfast. Best restaurant breakfast I have ever had. My girlfriend and I are regulars. Staff is very nice and on top of it. I wanted to like this place since I love local diners. However, while the service was friendly, it was slow despite the restaurant being half full. The ambience is a bit gritty and the food is hit or miss. My omelette was pretty bad: lots of grease and over cooked eggs. My husband's burger was solid though. This review is for the lounge attached to the restaurant, which is located in the back of the restaurant, entrance is on another street. We tried this place twice, first time we weren't that impressed, no place to sit, drab surroundings, very unfriendly bartender. Ok , well maybe an 'off' night, so we decided we'd give it another try. The second time around was worse because we actually made the mistake of ordering drinks. My guy's beer was warm, and myself and my sister's drink order of a higher end brand name rum, was definitely NOT what we ordered. I'm not sure what's going on in this place but I get the feeling they are not above board. When we returned the horrible tasting drinks (think bathtub rum), the bartender gave a snotty "just to let you know I gave you what you ordered" comment. The only thing I can say is they didn't charge us for the bathtub rum drinks, probably because they realized we knew (and so did they) it was NOT what we ordered. Well needless to say we will definitely not return, never, ever. There are plenty of much much better places to go who serve what you ask for without the attitude. Being new in the area, the hubs and I decided to try Cedar's for a casual dinner. It's on Main Street and the parking is street. I don't know if you can park behind it but there was street parking and we took it. The diner is very rustic/vintage in the decor. We sat down in a booth and looked at the menu. There is counter seating along with booth & tables from 2 tops to tables for 6-8. We ordered local brews and made our choices. Egg Rolls to start. While considering dinner, several plates were brought out and the food looked delicious and plentiful. I settled on the 2 piece Fish & Chips, you can choose skinny fries or steak fries-I chose steak. Hubs ordered the Meatloaf, mashed potatoes & steamed veggies with brown gravy. The Egg Rolls were really good and looked and tasted freshly made-SCORE! The citrus sauce was also tasty. On to the entrees. The fish fillets were HUGE and the beer batter perfect! Steak fries are pretty much the same everywhere. The tartar sauce was homemade and really good. The meatloaf was described as two slices--WRONG! More like two SLABS of meatloaf seasoned like Mama's with brown gravy. The potatoes were fresh mashed, with chunks of potatoes and buttery. The veggies were good and seasoned well--so good that he actually ate most of them. Nothing fancy here just good home cooking at a good price. We want to come back for breakfast because they offer country fried steak with eggs! That will be for another day when we go exploring. read more

The waitress right now is disgustingly rude with no manners. Sad that young workers have such a low bar for themselves, never reaching out of the gutter to do better or treat people with respect. She just walks around and cusses other employees and the work environment, dropping f bombs. When I tried to ask her to stop, she laughed at me and said, "thanks for the advice" and "whatever." It is clear from the other employees around her that this is a toxic work environment when she is at work. Customers just stared in disbelief as she cussed other people in conversation, especially in the back kitchen. The other employees seemed nice and the food was ok, but this was one of the worse customer service experiences I've ever experienced, as she has zero regard for those around her. Maybe management isn't reading the customer service reviews in the past? I sent them an email, hope they fix their historic issue of bad customer service. Also, you should train your staff to mention hidden charges and up-charges to the customer before they get surprises on their ticket. read more

Sad old place, decent food. Cedar's is essentially the only game in town when looking for diner food in Ferndale. It's not horrible, but it's not great either, it's just....OK. Food seems to take forever, even when they're not busy. On the plus side, burgers are some of the best I've had in Whatcom County. Thankfully, new options are starting to crop up in downtown Ferndale: Al's Downtown Diner across the street and New Mexico Tamale Company on Third Avenue. Al's is new and set to open soon, so I haven't tried them yet, but New Mexico Tamale Company is awesome!! As the Bellingham bubble continues to expand, folks are getting used to newer and more modern offerings. Unless Cedar's steps up their game, I think they'll get left behind. read more

NOT KID FRIENDLY!! The food is adequate, but the wait for us was over an hour. I had been once before with friends (an older couple) and thought it was good. So, decided to take my very hungry after swimming lessons grandkids and husband. Comparing the two visits was like night and day! First visit: We were seated quickly and pleasantly. Ordered coffee and ice teas, the smiling waitress took our order, waited a very reasonable amount of time and then enjoyed some good food! Well, the hash browns were undercooked, but otherwise fairly good. Second Visit: We entered and the place was about half full-definitely some empty tables, but still waited a while to be seated (1st clue) We were handed 2 menus for our group of 4 - two children and they're old enough to read (2nd clue) I'm reading/sharing one menu with the youngest child and apparently looking perplexed, because the waitress stops by and points to two items and states those are the kids menu. Oh, okay. However, we did not order either of those selections. We ordered four regular meals. Then, waited. And, watched four other groups and/or customers enter, be seated, order, AND have food delivered while we continued to wait. And wait. And wait. (3rd clue). We were never offered an explanation or an apology for the long wait. (4th clue) So, if you love your grandkids, but still want good service - go elsewhere! read more

But beware for those with a 'sensitive stomach' - this isa greasy spoon type place! I ordered the build your own omelette - it was huge and delicious! I couldn't believe the huge mound of potatoes it came with and it even came with a freshly made biscuit! For $8.99! My husband ordered french toast and ate every last bit. My little boy had a pancake -- it wasn't as soft and fluffy as I'd expected, but his non-discerning 4-year-old taste buds didn't mind, as long as the syrup was piled on!
