I've checked out Salsa nights Tuesday a couple times thinking maybe the first night was just an off night and both times I was a disappointed. They should call it Bachata night. If I'm going to a place to listen, dance Salsa I expect more than 3 salsa songs in an evening. Which is too bad because we have great salseros such as El Gran Combo, Grupo Niche, Rey Ruiz, Marc Anthony to name a few. Nothing wrong with Bachata but would like to hear a lot more salsa on salsa night. read more

The Cellar Door is excellent for Visalia. It occupies what once was a god for saken Chinese restaurant. Thankfully, it has been turned into something more useful. An alcohol establishment. There is usually a cover after 9pm, i believe. It's around $5, though, that changes if there is a band playing. The space is excellent, with modern dim, yet warm lighting with beautifully exposed brick walls. It's wide and open with couches and chairs along the walls near their new large windows and their new selection of gorgeous paintings. The center of the space has an elevated stage where at the end of it, is set up for live music. The front end of the stage has stool seating available. The bar itself is excellent as well with a wide variety of wines and beers. It is not a full bar so don't expect to order a cocktail. But that's ok. I like beer and wine just fine. Speaking of, their beer selection, on top of being wide, is excellent as far as choices. From domestic, to imported, to premium, they got all the good basics and beyond covered. However, i do have to say that i was very dissapointed with my experience with Boddington's here. Not the beer itself, but the travesty that they did not have it on tap. After i ordered from the bartender, i heard the sacreligious snap of a aluminum can and i knew i had been tricked. Blasphoemy! I reccommend Cellar Door to anyone living or visiting Visalia. It is quite good. Why wasnt Downtown Visalia cute and yupi when i was growing up there. read more

My sister is here from out of town. We wanted to find somewhere to watch live music and found this place. We arrived at about 7:30. Like others said seating is limited so if you want a table you need to come early. We were lucky and got the last one. There are lounging areas with comfy couches that you can reserve. We started with a pitcher of beer. There are I believe 8 or so on tap you can choose from as well as hard liquor and wine. We had the hot wings as an appetizer and they were actually really good. They had some sort of breading which I normally don't like, but it gave these wings something special. We also shared a barbecue chicken pizza. It's an eight inch pizza with a thin crust. The crust itself was well cooked, not soggy, just right. The toppings were flavorful and generous. We thought it was pretty darn good for bar food. There were two bands that played. They both were great and I didn't hear any issues with the sound systems as others have complained about. The stage is situated in the middle with the tables and bars wrapping around it. There is a large dance floor in front of that stage, with the stage and dance floor being a raised area. After the bands are done it turns more into a club with a DJ spinning some tunes. Our service was great from the front door, to our attentive server, to our bartender. I think this place will definitely get a return visit. read more

All I can say is.... WOW! The Cellar Door recently started serving dinner, and it is hands down the best food I've had in years. One of the owners went to culinary school and really perfects each of his dishes before adding to the menu. Our group enjoyed the broccoli cheddar soup (topped with thick bacon, bits of white cheddar cheese, and chili oil which really elevate this dish), the radishes (DELICIOUS), the new braised leeks (easily my favorite dish of the night), the chicken in white wine sauce, and wagyu steak plate. I've dined at the top restaurants in Visalia, and this food tops them all. HIGHLY recommend dining at the Cellar Door. read more

This place is pretty pretentious. The selection of drinkage is what it is- they don't have a full bar, but they do have a decent array of beers, ciders, wines, etc. They often get pretty good bands, but the sound in the place (and the people running the sound) seriously needs help, it is ALWAYS way too loud. The Cellar Door seems to be central to anything and everything going on in Visalia. We drove out here from Oakland to see one of my favorite bands, British Sea Power, and were very curious as to how a rock band from the UK would play in a wine bar. The place is bigger than I'd thought it would be. After the entrance there is an extra room on the right that sold straight up crappy beer for concertgoers, but the real wine bar is past that on the right. The bar is a nice big L shape and the wines are displayed in temperature control cabinets at the rear. The menu is well thought out and the descriptions fit the wines. They have something for everybody, from expensive bottles of bubbly to a nice Australian Shiraz I'd been meaning to try. In the middle of the room during the show was the stage. Actually, that's a lie since there really isn't a stage, just a separate floor for band and audience to stand on at the same level. The PA wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and the band were awesome (but this isn't a British Sea Power review, is it?) On the left side of the room was a nice lounge area with large windows so you can check out the surprisingly hopping weekend Downtown Visalia action outside. Visalia is lucky to have a place like the Cellar Door. It's not the perfect music venue, but the fact that they served wine in nice, big glasses in the middle a spastic rock show showed they are a brave lot. read more

This is the hottest spot to be in the Central Valley, hands down. I currently live in Los Angeles, originally from Tulare, and I STILL trek all the way back their as much as I can to see the amazing musical artists, the awesome comedy, and the great people. They ALWAYS make me feel like a STAR when I am there. And not to mention the food, wine, and beer selection. They really have the largest and most sought after wines and beers you can find anywhere. This is where I get my Caymus!!! My bottle of 2005 Special Reserve is still the best bottle of wine I have ever drank in my life. I love this place, and everything that goes with it! The crowd is different from what I'm use to. Not from this town, but was a fun night. It's roomie to dance, bar is small, there's places to sit, and it's a cute club. Cover charge is pretty pricy for an average club, music isn't all that great, DJ went from hip hop straight into trance, then slow slow R&B song... Ummm.... Place sure gets a lot of hype. Was not impressed with this place, nor was the caravan I went with. Took a while to get drinks to us, and when we wanted to head out to the VP for drinks, seemed the bill took even longer to procure. The art on the walls is not for me, made me feel like drinking a bottle of Absinthe and cutting off my left ear. Kinda freaked me out. Wasnt cool getting a buzz and staring at freakish paintings. Place does have great location though in the heart of downtown Visalia, so jumping ship and heading somewhere else doesnt have to include losing your parking spot. Great live music venue! Saw Del the Funky Homosapien here on Friday night and it was a good time. Very busy but the bartenders did a pretty good job of keeping the beer flowing. They have a great selection and even had one of my favorite beers, Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout! The only bad thing is the men's room, there was always a huge line for it. Kinda weird too cuz the ladies room had no line...bit of a role reversal. Only one urinal and a toilet in the mens room. While taking a piss some dude was so desperate he came in, said fuck it and pissed in the sink. Didnt wash my hands that time. read more

This place is the only reason I'd ever go back to Visalia again. I was here with my friend only to see one of my favorite bands, We Are Scientists, and I think I was just as puzzled as they were about why they'd be performing at a small wine bar like this in the middle of nowhere in California. I was expecting a dumpy old bar but when I walked inside, it was a bigger place than I thought it'd be, with a small, raised stage in the middle. Lots of comfy couches were around the stage and it was nice to just sit there and have drinks before the show started. Because it's a wine and beer bar, I was really happy they had my favorite beer on tap and I loved that I spent only a little bit over $20 on four drinks total. I'd give this place 5 stars for the sole reason that they were able to land Vampire Weekend last October. But there are other redeeming events that has made this one of my go-to bars when I go back home (yes, double L is still somehow in the rotation) Several times I was a part of a big group that came in at once, and everytime they'll open up the side room and let us hang out in there in private. At the time, I was impressed with their presumed hospitality. I look back now and I'm even more impressed because it was sheer foresight - identifying alchies and separating them from the general public. Either way, works for me. 5 stars! read more

Been here a few times. Guy in a suit at the front ,asked him if he works there or just dressed up for a night out, he gave me a non-committal answer. Kid in the t-shirt is either the bouncer or a nosey regular. No idea how many people there are actually staff. Got a burger somewhere else because their signage says "open for lunch", got inside and they said they have a Chef from .. (either Cordon Bleu or CIA) there for dinners! Now I drive by and the windows say "OPEN FOR LUNCH" and "Closed for Remodeling". Why would I pay cover a 7 if the Bands start at 9? read more

Wow just wow, Visalia has really downgraded with this club.. showed up on a Saturday night wearing a Zara white shirt and they refused to let me in!? They found a loner tapout style t shirt to let me use while attending such a classy event this evening(being sarcastic AF) I could understand if I looked the part of being a gangster but NO, not in the slightest. Incredibly disappointed! Drove from Fresno to Visalia for an event at the Cellar Door, arrived late, but arrived none-the-less at 11:45/11:50 PM, and they gladly took my money/cover charge at the door. Spent $5 at the bar and left a tip upon entering. Around 12:00/12:10 they gave the "last call", and by 12:25:12:30 the lights were up and the Cellar Door management ended the event, leaving the event promoter embarrassed and apologizing to the people who had came out. There were plenty of people there having a good time, buying drinks, etc, but apparently not enough to keep the venue management interested in staying open for those of us who had paid a cover and were spending money on drinks. Upon leaving I asked the guy who took my money at the door why they were ending it so soon, told him how far I had just driven, and told him it would have been nice if I would have known upon entering and PAYING A COVER that they would be ending so soon, and all this guy did was give me a "tough luck" attitude and could care less that I had just paid the cover and that they were cutting the night short. I was not offered an apology nor was I offered a refund or even a partial refund. Rude. Unprofessional. Visalia deserves better! read more

Great place to see live bands and this place has a knack for landing major indie bands (Vampire Weekend, The Clientele, Crystal Antlers, Laura Marling...) that don't even consider tour stops in Fresno. An elevated stage and dance floor surrounded by tables and bar stools means there are really no bad seats in the house. A cozy venue with an extensive variety of beers and wines make the trip down to Visalia worthwhile when a good band is in town. read more

Since the new ownership I always look forward to coming to this venue. The bar manager is very assertive. (I used to have a hard time placing orders before). Excellent sound system. Great Booker. If you live in Visalia or nearby you should frequent this place to be exposed to great music. This venue is a tastemaker type of spot. With a sounds system better than most venues it's size in the whole country. I know because I tour the states and this is one of my favorite sounding rooms to play in the states. Friendly people. Really disappointed on how we were treated last night. It wasn't even close to closing time and they put the closed sign on the door. And after that they let in a few girls the bouncer was friends with!!! I was so angry. When I asked him what that was about he said he was just "doing his job". It was so rude. Horrible! I absolutely hate this place! I had been here a few times and last summer some of the security got physical with a friend of mine when he wasn't even being combative. The owner Denise then tried to bribe my friend with $20 when the police showed up. Another time I went with my friend and her husband and as soon as we walked through the door they told him not to start any trouble (profiling much?) and the last time I went a few days ago because my friend wanted to dance after a break up so I gave it another shot, the guy at the door charged me then the bar closed 10 min. Later. I asked him why he would charge me knowing it was closing, he laughed at me and asked if I wanted my money back and when I said yes he laughed and didn't refund my $. This place is CLASSLESS!
