This is one of the fanciest/better looking bars I have been to, though I wouldn't really stop much by as it wasn't my kind of crowd. I went to see Pinback at this bar and since it was a bigger show, the "stage" area was really crowded, and since the band is at the same level as the audience, I couldn't see anything. I ended up standing at the bottom level and listened to the music from there. It wasn't such a great experience for me, but the bar was really nice looking. The owners walk around throughout the night picking up bottles and checking to see what's going on. I can imagine myself going if another band I enjoy happens to be playing here, but I can't see myself just stopping by for a drink. read more

First time here: Doormen clearly don't give a shit, had no intention of asking me to come in and didn't know whether the kitchen was still open. Got here at 9:40 and band is still setting up (ok). Sat down at an approximately half full bar and waited 5 min before approached. Got a menu, might have hoped for more than a "domestic cheese" plate (cheddar, Monterey and pepper jack cheeses) from a "wine bar" but I'm not pretentious and I love cheese. :) Opted for chicken strips and sweet potato fries, before asking for wine list which included an underwhelming 33 wines. Were out of the first two wines I ordered. Reisling was a little syrupy, house cab was very basement musky and (I know this is douchy) served in a white wine glass. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet potato fries but the ranch served with the chicken was nasty. I guess it depends on your expectations- I actually liked this bar but it was def not a classy wine place as its name might suggest. I was actually looking for the Brazilian Steakhouse to try out but when asking for directions from a fellow pedestrian she told me about this place and invited me to dine with her. We enjoyed the $5 wine tasting. Wines were decent but they ran out before we could taste all varieties and they would not open more bottles (odd). The space and environment of this bar has so much potential but present decor is not very inviting and art work was kind of freaky. I suggest incorporating candles in your decor....would add warmth to the walls. Background music would have been nice to have for those of us not participating in the salsa lessons. Nice sized dance floor......if you are there for the dancing (which we were not). I might visit again. I really want to give a three star, but can't. Oh,meatball appetizers were good, but pass on the brushetta, it's more like a bad personal pizza. We wanted to try the interesting blue cheese appetizer dish, but they were out (bummer). Happy to have made a nice new friend.....helps being social :-)!!! I'll try the Brazilian Steakhouse next time and let you know. read more

My wife and I went here last Saturday night to meet some friends around 11pm. We walked through the door and I was told my wife was free, but I had to pay a $5 cover. I looked inside and noticed all of 10 people with no live music. I then pulled my wallet out to show the bouncer that I literally don't carry cash. He then pointed at the atm and said I could get cash there. Not wanting to use an atm for $5 my wife and I decided to leave. We were quickly stopped and I was told by the bouncer he would "Cover me." The most upsetting part is after we walked in I found out that my other two guy friends inside had the same experience and then were let in for free. I totally support a cover for live music and up and coming musicians. I don't support a bar where they put up a fake cover charge hoping people won't question it and just pay. read more

so sad that this place isn't what it used to be and has turned into the cities usual bar scene. Being a wine lover, I was so excited when this placed opened years ago. I was a frequent patron of it's mother establishment The Wooden Crate, which was a fabulous place for mature, wine loving folks to hang out and drink some killer wine. When the owner moved the Wooden Crate to this location it was still a great place, but with more space and I had such high hopes! Then owners changed hands, I believe a few times and now it's a skeleton of it's former self. The wine list went from outstanding boutique wineries, to cheap, stuff you can pick up at any old SaveMart. The crowd is your typical 20 something bar scene. Loud, obnoxious and obtrusive. They often have live bands which play so loud you can't enjoy your company or cheap wine. It's been a lone time since my last visit, but I've heard things are actually worse. The last probably 6 times I did go in was during the week and early. There were more wait staff than patrons, but I still had to go up to the bar to order my glass of wine. The waiters just keep gabbing to each other behind the bar. Then when I was done, my husband had to go pay the ticket. Went for St Patty's Day and they had a great Irish band playing, well worth the $7 cover charge. Room was spacious and comfy at the same time. Waitress was very personable and remembered what everyone was drinking. Huge beer selection has some good craft beer, domestic and import. At $4-$5 a beer, it is a little higher than my favorite spots but not too bad. Only poor marks are for the restrooms which REALLY need a remodel. read more

I never agree with a place charging a cover charge unless there is a band there. I paid a $10 cover charge to listen to an awful band. Hope you like to dance or move around because there were not a lot of seats. This place just needs to b bigger around the stage. I did like the stage being in the middle of the room. Bartenders were ok and alcoholic beverages were watered down. Once you get settled in, it is a cool place to kick back! read more

Sadly this the only place that offers salsa.I say that because the dj really sucks. I wish a place with such a large Latino community would have a better dj..if you are here in beautiful Visalia and you want to dance just stay in bed and wait till you are in a establishment that hires a real dj or band for salsa. read more

While the Cellar Door is a fantastic venue for live entertainment, the staff is nice, and the decorating is gorgeous and comfy, its prices on wine leave a bad taste in my mouth. The price per glass seems high, and some of it is brands you could just go to a grocery store and buy a whole bottle for the same price as the glass. They do carry some lovely wines, but the markup makes me wonder if they have to pay retail for their bottles. Their limited food menu is pretty good. Reasonably priced too. Absolutely adore the sandwich with the cinnamon apples! So so good! read more

Came from Los Angeles to see some midgets wrestle here. Seemed like a pretty decent place. Drinks weren't too expensive, and service was quite quick considering how packed it was that evening. And, there were midgets wrestling there. I can't complain one bit! read more

The Cellar Door proves Visalia is no longer 50 years behind the rest of California! I grew up in the area in the 1980's--there was nowhere for a good indie/underground band to play. For young people into this kind of music back then we had to rent the Women's Civic Hall or the Rec Center in order to hear/see interesting music. It's great Sound and Vision have taken the D.I.Y. thing to the next level. Whenever I go to Visalia I can't believe all the hipster indie kids and all the great bands that play there. These kids have NO idea what Visalia used to be like--BORING (it still is, but at least there's something to do!). Congratulations to the Cellar Door for hosting great music! read more

Unfortunately Visalia is very limited in the music venue department., so yes this is THE hot spot. Great variety of bands, but I would definitely not call it a wine bar. Especially after going there on two different occasions and they were out quite a few of the wines I was requesting. Granted, I've only been here once and it was for a Tuesday salsa lesson. It's a five dollar cover but that give you two half hour lessons a beginner and intermediate. The instructors were great and the class was fun! It really makes me want to learn hard core so I can get my dirty dancing on. After the class it stays as a salsa night with salsa music and cumbias. Once you get your hand stamped they allow in and outs, which is a plus in my book. Beers were $5 with specials of some on taps for $2.00. If you are looking for a fun experience and mingling with people take the class and stay to put your new learned moves to work. read more

A handful of Coachella artists have played at the Cellar Door and they have been able to pull a lot of amazing up and comers from around the US. $10-20 tickets, decent drink prices and being close to the artists........ Cellar Door is not quite what it use to be. We use to come often to dance (since this was the only place in town) the music was always pretty good and the drinks were okay. Drinks are still okay, but the DJs seem to always play the same top 40 and we have had more bad than good incidents. The front door working are always very rude and $10 cover charge is crazy for Visalia. I've been here with girlfriends and actually had a working yell at us while dancing that "that guy is trying to holler at you"... ummm okay.. when you're obviously trying to ignore someone that is making "baby girl" comments to you why would an employee try to help him out?! lol.. it's a little unprofessional over all. Some nights it's a little sketch and I feel unsafe to even come, which is super disappointing because this venue has such a great location and could be so much more. I appreciate the bands that come and different nights they offer, but I think they could utilize their space more and possibly get different DJs to come in and switch the vibe up. read more

My husband and I stopped in here on a whim last night on a date night. We were told there was a $10 cover per person at the door, but that there was live music. The place was pretty much empty with only 4 patrons, but we figured it was just early. We paid the cover and went to the bar. The bar was out of both Jack Daniels and Jim Beam, instead the bartender made us something else which we both found un-drinkable (especially for $18!!). I asked for a refund and the bartender happily obliged. She was very friendly and professional so I do not blame her in the least. She explained to us that they are closing and the owners are not replacing any stock. The people at the door also happily refunded our cover charge. All in all, we spent (and had refunded) $40 in less than 10 min. We will definitely NOT be back. read more

Salsa dance Tuesday night is awesome. Very relaxed atmosphere. People are really nice. Guys are friendly a d willing to dance without that meat market feel. Owners seem really friendly. They are school teacher by day. Bar owners by night. I highly recommend checking it out. Can't speak for weekends. Never been. read more

This is a wonderful place to go and get a drink with a friend prior to 9pm or listen to a band after 9pm. The wine and beer selection is one of the best in town and the atmosphere is wonderful with revolving art work on the walls. The venue brings in well known bands as well as rising bands. I am so frustrated with this place I personally saw the so called cook of the establishment sneeze on plate of food and then proceed to serve it to the woman who was collecting money at the door. I immediately reported this disturbing situation to the young girl with long brown hair working the bar. She said yeah ok I'll let someone know rolled her eyes at me and walked away. I was then forced by my buddies to go back a few nights later and this time I witnessed the same cook using the restroom the same time as I was. He used the facilities and walked right past the hand washing station without even glancing at it! How can a place like this with such a great atmosphere and decent wine selection continue to employ such person who excretes bodily fluids on foods and doesn't wash their hands before making paying clients food. Sadly nothing has been done and I have talked to a few different workers about what I have seen they all shine on what I have to say. So I'm telling you here on YELP please if you go to this establishment do not for the love of God order anything to eat! read more
