A friend and I were looking on Yelp for a place to eat at about 9:30 on a week day evening and Celtic Cowboy was one of the few places in Great Falls that was open. (What did we do before we had Yelp to get this kind of information?). The Celtic Cowboy is a little hard to find at night because their sign is small and it was dark but with the help of google maps we found it. (What did we do before google maps?). The Celtic Cowboy is what is called an Irish Pub - of course it isn't but we all get the concept. As an aside for some reason the pub like the French cafe' just doesn't make it across the Atlantic alive but so it goes. We were there on a Monday evening and the crowd was small. There was live music which consisted of a guitar player singing an eclectic mix of classics. He provided just the right mix of songs at a sound level which did not interfere with conversations. We were seated quickly and ordered. We both had a cup of the tomato/red pepper soup which was very good. I had the corned beef which was excellent. There was a very generous amount of tender corned beef served with cabbage, potatoes, and carrots. My friend had the burger which was huge with fries which he thought were a bit limp. Otherwise we were happy with the meal, service, and ambience. I would definitely return. read more

Would not recommend Celtic Cowboy. Two out of the four meals we ordered were just ok and one was actually terrible. Do not order the shepherds pie- the filling was mush- there was no meat and the sauce looked like it came out of a can. It was not made in the traditional manner at all. The only thing that was decent was the Rueben. With several other choices in town, I just cannot recommend this place. The only highlight was a fantastic server who was awesome! read more

The atmosphere was interesting and they had some old-time cowboy singers doing the hits from 30s/40s. I had the bison pasty. There was less than 1oz of meat. (90% dough and potato) in their special pasty. My girlfriend had the Mac & Cheese. We both felt quite ill thereafter (very sick). I love this bar... If I lived in Great Falls this would be my hangout! It is absolutely gorgeous inside. A lot of wood with the traditional Irish pub feel. Pictures paint a thousand words so check them out! Okay, so besides the drop-dead gorgeous interior, these guys know their whiskey, bourbon, and beer. I was turned on to Connemara's whiskey (Irish bourbon) with a heavy peat character to it. Wow. Delicious!! They also had some serious high-end stuff I would want to try, but at $70/pour I think I'll have to budget for it next time! The bartender was super friendly (for a Bears fan...haha...I love Bears fans), and made the hilarious comment about MN having 'wet cold'. My dad just looked at me and said, "He doesn't know what he's talking about!". Lol! He was just being conversational...which is sometimes hard to get at a nice, professional bartender (which every one of the guys behind the bar were). Then the musician started. Just a guy with a guitar. Now, having just come from Bert and Ernie's and the bugling of a woman who thought she sounded bluesy, ANYTHING would have sounded better...but this guy was phenomenal. He played all the classic old country stuff, which made my dad's day. Then he played the Wreck of the Old '97. Seriously?!? Who, besides my dad and I, know that song?? Rebecca and I stopped for brunch/lunch together. Glad we did. They feature a nice Irish brunch. Rebecca loved the biscuits and gravy. The bacon was cooked just the way I like it. Ok, not everything was Irish. The scone was oust; I got two. The corned beef hash had good flavor and just the right amount of meat. The ham was good, as was the sausage. For steam table, this was very good. They do mean Bloody Mary. Rebecca then switched to a very good local wheat beer and I got an Irish coffee. They use whipped cream. Rather than cream. Otherwise it was good; plenty of Irish whiskey. The decor is very cozy; it feels like a pub. We will come back. Try it. read more

great place! I was there on trivia night and the place was full and people were having a great time. I tied the place on the suggestion of one of the bartenders at Boston's (who also works at the Cowboy), excellent suggestion. Staff was great and I throughly enjoyed myself. The Irish Nachos (med size ) app was way too much for one person but I managed to finish most of it off. Fish and chips were next, and it too was a good size portion, which after the nachos I just couldn't finish. It was a lot of fun listening to the trivia questions, but they were tough questions lol, I knew very few answers. Bottom line, try this place. read more

Whisky wednesdays is a must for whiskey lovers like me! The have a HUGE selection of craft beers, and their menu has recently been upgraded with a lot more options. We always get the Irish nachos, soooooo good with the gorgonzola dressing. The pasty is delish. My husband loves the Irish grilled cheese with soup! Fish and chips are to die for as well. I really wanted to love this place. It's not easy to find decent food in Great Falls. I would rate the bar 4 stars, but the food is just decent. The menu is very ambitious and I think they do an ok job of making most dishes. I came in with a party of 4 and sampled everyone's dish. I tried the tenderloin, prime rib, chicken roulade. I've previously been in and had the very excellent tomato soup and Irish grilled cheese. They were very good. My biggest suggestion would be to pare down the menu. The waiter we had Saturday night for dinner was very young and forgot quite a few items. Not a huge deal. We ordered a bottle of wine and the server uncorked it and just left the bottle. No sampling, no cork sniffing, no pouring. I hope this place makes it. I know it can be tough running a business in Great Falls. read more

Fun local spot but I get the idea it excels in its bar atmosphere more than its lunch dining. I wish I could say five stars because I read so many reviews. Stopped in for lunch. Had the Irish breakfast. The good: variety on the plate, eggs were cooked exactly right, creative cuisine, clean bathroom The "Meh": Cold plate equals cold food. Hard to get excited about luke warm food on a chilly plate. Had to stop the waitress several times to ask for refills, wait was substantial for only being one of three parties in there. Finally the portion size was disappointing, not alarmingly so, just smaller than normal. If the prices were cheaper I'd give it another star for what I am paying I'd expect a step up from other local diners. Like to go again and believe it will be different. read more

If I could write how much I loved this place, it would likely fill a phonebook (whatever that is). I'll break the abridged version down by category: FOOD: I had the pleasure of actually visiting Ireland for a month when I was in highschool. I've got to say, the Irish cuisine the Celtic Cowboy serves is pretty close to what I devoured in the Emerald Isle. If you want a nice sampling an Irish classic, order the Irish Breakfast. It's slightly "Americanized", but overall delicious (PS: do not order if you are watching your weight because there is a silly amount of pork and potatoes). Save room for dessert if you can. Their bread pudding is phenomenal, and so is their Guinness Ice Cream. Which leads me to the next category... ALCOHOL: I would recommend the Celtic Cowboy, simply for its drink selection. They have several Irish and UK ales and ciders that are hard to find in most restaurants (especially on tap). If whiskey is your pleasure, you're in the right spot. They have a large whiskey list, and even better, Whiskey Wednesday's (where whiskey is half off for a limited time). If you've ever wanted to try fancier whiskey, but didn't want to drink your wallet, that is the time to sample some good shtuff. ATMOSPHERE/SERVICE: Ok, it can be a little loud. But it's Irish, remember? I don't think I've ever encountered a quiet Irish restaurant. It's loud AND fun. They have some really talented bands and musicians performing in the evenings throughout the month (Cry of the Deer is a particular favorite). The service is top notch. They've always been quick, courteous, and attentive. So that's it. Amazing food, solid drink selection, fun atmosphere and great service. Stop in for a drink or make it your next date night. Best pub experience I've had since I was in England!!! The drink selection was well rounded, mixing traditional pub beers with local brewery selections. The bar is beautifully crafted. The atmosphere is outstanding. The woodwork and design of the establishment are mellow and lighthearted which add to the experience of going to a place for a nice post work-week drink and some food. The menus were not outlandish and fairly priced. The main selections have a nice Irish/UK background and the Pub menu perfectly mixes classic pub items with a western flair. The waitstaff was pleasant and on the spot in their service. I'd give this more than a five if I could. This place has a wonderful and welcoming Irish pub decor, atmosphere and staff. The live musical group of fiddlers and guitarists made my Prince Edward Island native dining companion feel as if she were back home again. My steak was tasty and cooked as ordered and the Black and Tan beer batter onion rings were crisp, sweet and sporting an unusual flavour profile from the beer. The bread pudding dessert was awesome but a huge portion, I would order it again but as a share for two. My dining companions reported items as diverse as fish and chips, tiramisu and scotch eggs to be delicious. The only drawback was our seating in a side room with another large group who turned out to be having a business meeting with the loudest, non-stop talker of a chairperson I'd ever heard. read more

I think today was my last visit for eating. We waited 35 minutes for the half-sandwich Irish Grilled Cheese and soup special and a goat cheese salad and cup of stew. That wait is unacceptable. The lack of staff has been a consistent issue every time I've visited in the past. I had to find the waitress to ask her when the order was coming out. While the waitress was pleasant, I think some customer service training is in order. She asked us what would make us happy - clearly she couldn't go back in time and make our meal appear in a timely fashion, so I don't know what she thought we would say. We asked for go boxes and the bill. While we received a discount, lunch was still a major disappointment. Management needs to look at staffing. read more

We decided to try the Celtic Cowboy since it's a newer restaurant. Our waitress was polite & attentive. However, the food was disappointing. I ordered the Irish Reuben & it was extremely greasy, never experienced that before. It came with French fries which were limp with grease. Spouse had the Captains Catch, the coleslaw might as well have been left off the basket as it was approximately a quarter cup. Same greasy food. The restaurant needs to turn up the temperature on their fryer(s)!!! Prices were kind of high, $13.00 & $19.00, for the quality. I can't say that this would be a restaurant on our list to return to. 1 star for extremely poor and rude service. I went here with some friends. We got drinks ordered and then our meals. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. Finished our water and some of us our drinks. And we waited. An hour passed. We watched people who came in behind us get their dinner. Many empty tables, several serves, ours was nowhere in site. Finally she was delivering things to other tables. One of our party chased her down. She told him matter of fact that our ticket was in and our dinner was coming, did a 180 and walked away. He asked for more water. She brought back two pitchers, not clear why we didn't get at least one to start, slammed them down on the table and left. Finally our dinners came. When she brought our bills she seemed all sweet and apologized, but never offered an explanation. p.s. The place could lose the live entertainment or at least upgrade the PA system. The sound was all muffled and you couldn't understand a word that was sung. It just added to the cacophony. read more

I went here for dinner and breakfast the following day. First the food, it was perfectly delicious. I had the bison burger and my friend had the elk. Both were cooked as ordered and yummy. The drinks, well, they had soooo many whiskeys to choose from. I had the 2 Gingers on ice. Hard to mess up and it was good. My friend had a more complicated drink and it was good but served with several ice cubes. He asked that his second drink just have the one big ice cube. It's not asking for anything complicated, I had a single big ice cube. So the server comes back with his drink, says "Oh, I just realized you asked me for one ice cube and I forgot to tell the bartender. Oh well." She set his drink down and walked away. Who does that? Seriously, make it right or don't make us pay for it or something. Overall the all whole meal took us 90 minutes and 30 of that was wondering where our food and server was. So we went back for breakfast because we had vouchers from the Hotel Arvon and the food was good. The service was perfect for breakfast as was the food. Seriously, ever ask for eggs over medium and just get the same over easy everyone else gets? My over mediums were perfection and our server was attentive with the coffee without hovering. Food-wise we went there for dinner at night, then breakfast next morning. Dinner was OK night before. Next day we were on schedule to get to airport (did not mention that, though) and place was empty-food came out and eggs over medium were watery and runny, hashbrowns pale and underdone, and my corned beef and potato dish had almost no corned beef. The Celtic Cowboy came highly recommended from several different friends that I have. I finally got around to trying it and I was not disappointed. Since it was just me I was able to be seated right away and not have to worry about having to wait. I sat at the bar and ordered the Irish Mac N Cheese. Food came out piping hot and was delicious. Staff was friendly and made sure I was taken care of. This is what an Irish pub should be. My only complaint is that the musicians that were playing on this particular night seemed to be maybe a little excessively loud. I had trouble hearing the bar tender.
