My three month old Aussie, Kai, went to Central Animal Hospital for his first vet visit. It was also my first time using this clinic and I greatly enjoyed the experience. The atmosphere was welcoming and low stress. I used to go to University Pet Clinic and found it a bit too busy. Dr Miller spent a lot of time working to make Kai comfortable and answered all of our questions. Dr. Miller is the best! We had been taking our dog Bubba to her for years until he died last year. We recently got another dog that had a lot of gastrointestinal issues. We would be up most of the night letting our dog out because he would have diarrhea. We moved and decided to seek out a vet closer to us. WHAT A MISTAKE. I have been bringing my pets to Doctor Samuels for at least 20 years. I'm not a frequent visitor, but I will say that when I have needed a good vet to help with my fur babies he has been excellent. He is an expert at what he does. He has a wonderful bedside manner, and isn't one to over charge or require unnecessary tests or treatments. He really cares about animals. His staff is also very kind and friendly. When I was younger and very low on funds, my Dad brought two dogs over that he had just rescued from PACC. He asked me to watch them for a month and I agreed. He went abroad and left me with the dogs all while I had two dogs of my own. Well, the rescue dogs had kennel cough, so I was faced with figuring out how to treat four dogs with kennel cough and not much in the way of funding. When I shared this story with Dr. Samuel's he offered the option of bringing in two dogs and he would treat four for the price of two. This was back in the early 2000's, but I will NEVER FORGET the act if kindness he showed. He is truly a top tier vet. read more

Dr. Samuels was my dog's vet for nine years. I trusted him. Up until the last six months of my dog's life, I think he did a good job. But he missed my dog's heart murmur. And when his heart murmur evolved into a failing heart, I learned after the fact that he did not follow the best medication protocol. When my dog was dying and I spoke to him, he dismissed my concerns. On my dog's last day, my dog's respiration skyrocketed. I knew he was dying. I took him in to get fluids, and Dr. Samuels refused to see me. He refused to help my dog die. So I brought him home and he died in agony. It was an epic failure on Samuels' part, and I told him so in a letter afterward. There was no need for my dog to suffer, and he was responsible for it. I would never recommend him anyone. He knows that he failed my dog, and I hope he lives with that rest of his life. I would have filed a complaint with the Arizona veterinary board, but I don't believe they would've taken any action against him, and it would've prolonged my healing. read more

This entire staff is wonderful. I've been with these people for over 20 years, first with my rescued Starling who lived 15 years. Dr. Samuels was the only doctor I found at that time who knew how to treat wild birds. That staff then, is still with him today, as I take my Boston Terrier Skippy in for his yearly exam and vaccinations. During our visit Dr. Samuels finds that Skippy has back knees that are dislocating. Rather than jumping to a recommendation of surgery, he provides lots of information, prevention planning, and counsel for my anxiety, with positive steps I can take to help Skippy control this. After our meeting, one of the staff took the harness I use that had become broken and fixed it. I'm at home now, carefully inspecting this harness. For the life of me, I can't figure out how she fixed this! It's perfect! No left over parts! Staff, thank you so much for your enthusiasm and kindness. Brought my 4-year-old 4.5lb Papillion to Central Animal Hospital for an initial examination, and to ask about cleaning her teeth and getting spayed. Dr. Miller examined her teeth and explained that there are risks of anesthesia. Further, that spaying her would be risky to her spine/nerves while not helpful this late in her life. She provided a postcard for a physical therapy business but added "there isn't much they can do now, because you waited 3-years" to get her treated. Wait, what? Central Animal Hospital was able to pull Lexi's prior medical records from another vet's office for an exam conducted while she belonged to her former owner. But why did she say to me, "there isn't much that can be done for Lexi because you waited 3-years to get her treated" multiple times. It's untrue and presumptuous. Lexi had been given to me three years ago. Former owner said that her back legs stopped working after kids tossed her around on a trampoline. Days after adopting Lexi, I took her to see a veterinarian for spay surgery, but due to Lexi's condition it wasn't possible. She was incontinent, her back leg muscles had already atrophied and weren't responsive to touch. The doctor concluded she may be paralyzed. We later met a chiropractor who provided adjustments and encouraged exercise. Turns out, Lexi is not paralyzed and is re-developing those back leg muscles. I didn't wait 3 years for care. With Lexi's improved condition, I wanted to inquire about getting spayed and her teeth cleaned. Dr. Miller had not examined Lexi's spine, legs, or ability to walk, and had no actual frame of reference, so, what did she mean by it's too late? This didn't help Lexi at all, and insinuated that I had not taken good care of my dog. So what about the teeth cleaning? The front desk tech said "the doctor didn't mention it" and went to ask ... returned saying, "oh, she'd have to put together a quote." Whatever that means. read more

My kitties have been taken care of by Vet Dr Judy Miller. Dr Miller and Dr Samuels are professional, great physicians, kind and caring, and reasonably priced. All visits and procedures were taken care of for all my kitties. A wonderful Vet experience for both the kitties and their family. (My kitty Clyde would not come out voluntarily from under the chair in the exam room. So Dr Miller crawled on the floor and gave him his exam there, on every visit. I would highly recommend this clinic. I became aware of them because I volunteer with a rescue group that uses this clinic. We took our husky here today and Dr Miller was fantastic the staff was knowledgeable and polite. My dog suffers from a chronic medical condition and the clinic took it seriously and didn't push unnecessary testing just what was needed. Actually, the doctor recommended waiting on one of the tests. When I see something like this I am pleased, I have been to vets that really push unnecessary testing to ramp up the bill. Well, this is disturbing. I just received a mildly intimidating letter in the mail regarding my Yelp Review for Central Animal Hospital from Dr. Samuels. He wrote: "The copy of ___'s records was waiting to be picked up at the front desk." Me: Joshua told me he would call me when they were ready. Why didn't he? Dr. Samuels: "There was no Valley Fever Test run in May 2017. There was no appointment at Central AH in May 2017." Me: That's because I did NOT receive a call back about my dog with Valley Fever (I did NOT schedule an appointment when I didn't get a call back), and because I had just adopted a new dog with a terrible ear infection that turned out to be a MRSA infection, and I decided to go to Adobe Veterinary Clinic to save my dogs' lives. I never did receive a call after leaving an urgent message on their voicemail. Why? Clearly, they dropped the ball. And, no one ever tried to clear this up. Dr. Samuels: "....but the name you used on Yelp (Linda E.) made it impossible to figure out who you were at the time." Me: I think it's creepy to be tracked down. A polite phone call would have been a bit better, especially since I was still waiting for Joshua's call. Using the phone to retrieve messages and the ability to call clients back seems to be a big problem. Far better to respond publicly on Yelp--less weird. Dr. Samuels: "I would appreciate it if you would remove the Yelp post concerning the Valley Fever Test so I do not have to respond to the erroneous complaint." Me: I don't appreciate the mild intimidation. I didn't request a Valley Fever Test. I'm guessing Dr. Samuels has never read anything about customer service, or how to How to Win Friends and Influence People (Dale Carnegie). I have no idea if this place is good for animals. I'm sure they love them-- just not their customers is my guess. read more

We recently had to euthanize our very old dog which was a very difficult but necessary step at this point. Dr. Samuels and the entire staff treated us and our pet with dignity and compassion. Great veterinarians are pricing. Had my dogs teeth removed and they made it as easy as possible.

The vet techs were great when I took my dog to get x-rays but the customer service was not. Every time I called, the receptionists were extremely rude & constantly transferred me back and forth until I was able to speak to someone. They only take hard copy x-rays therefore could not send digital copies to another vet so you must go back and "check-out" the x-rays from them. They only allow you to have the x-rays for 2 weeks and if you need them for a longer time period, you have to take them back and check them back out. It was frustrating needing to rush after work just to re-check out x-rays I paid for (especially as person who works from 8-5). I called in advanced each time I was going so they were able to prepare the paperwork beforehand but every time I called, I was treated like an inconvenience which is upsetting when you're looking for help & trying to follow their procedures. They were not been pleasant to work with and would not recommend this place for x-rays. read more

I just switched vets...they're good at their jobs, but they're cold and crass. I'm younger and they always assume that I'm too stupid to understand what is going on with my cat. They belittle me and have no ability to show compassion. They do however seem to know what they're doing when it comes to veterinary care. Dr. Mike Samuels is the GREATEST vet ever. I have used him ever since he started in Tucson, almost 30 years ago. He does our cats, dogs, and birds. He also does small animals, reptiles, pocket pets, exotics, etc. SUPER knowledgeable and SUPER, SUPER NICE! I would not go anywhere else - have had to when an emergency arose or if it was after hours or the weekends. I have been spoiled as the service is never as good as what I get from this office. I wish I could give the veterinarians and staff 10 stars! I prefer to take all my animals to Central Animal Hospital because I know they will receive the best care. Dr. Miller and Dr. Samuels aren't only professional but they really do care about my little pets. I've been going there for about a decade with my chinchillas and they have always provided the best care in southern Arizona for small exotics. I've been taking my dogs there for a few years now, as well. I took my kitties there today because it's just easier (and better) to take everyone to the same great vet. So, my dogs and, apparently, my cats love Dr. Miller more than me. :) (Blub, Hoss, Fifi, Joe, Boodah, Bear and Whiskers all love you, Judy!!) I am so happy I found this veterinarian. Dr Samuel's is the best. He doesnt do a lot of unnecessary treatments. He is all about giving good quality care at the lowest cost possible. The place I was taking my dog to was very expensive, they wanted to do anything that would run up the bill and they wouldn't get my dog in for an ear infection for over a week. Dr. Samuels is fantastic. Even after I moved to CA, I still brought my dog back a few times when we were in town. He and his office staff are straightforward, caring and fun, and the prices are quite reasonable; they are generous with time and attention. There wasn't a lot of staff turnover during the time I was there, which was nice. The vet tells good stories, too. Over the several years I brought my dogs, birds, reptile and cat here, I was really pleased with Central Animal Hospital's care for all of them. They're good with exotics as well as "normal" pets. It's hard to find a small animal vet, and especially one that is actually good with hamsters, rats, etc. Our hamster was having a problem with a runny eye and Tucson's University Pet Clinic recommended Central Animal Hospital to us. It was the first time that we'd been there and the first time that we had to take our little guy to the vet. The staff was amazingly friendly, even the other clients were talking to us and everyone was interested in our hamster! :) Dr. Rice is the vet who took care of us, and I could not have asked for better. He was thoroughly engaged not only with us, but more importantly with our hamster. He took the visit very seriously and spent a good half hour or more with us and our baby. He was super comfortable handling our hamster and was straightforward and honest with us with regards to the treatment plan. Our hamster is bright and shiny once again, and we were so impressed that from now on we'll be bringing all of our animals to Dr. Rice. Thank you Central Animal Hospital!! read more

Dr. Samuels is just an amazing vet. He has a wealth of information at his fingertips and always delivers professional friendly care. His support staff are very friendly and compassionate. Dr Miller is also an incredible vet, but Dr. Samuels saved my cat's life via surgery and post-care and so I have a bias. It's almost like going over to a friends house and having your animal checked up while you are there. I can't say enough positive statements about this place. If I could give it more stars I would. I can not say enough amazing things about these people. Central Animal Hospital is the best Veterinary Hospital I have ever been to. Their compassion and knowledge by far exceed any other vet I have gone to. Both of the doctors (Dr. Samuels and Dr. Miller) are very friendly and truly care and listen to your questions and concerns. Not only do they treat dogs and cats but all exotics from sugar gliders to snakes. Their prices are amazing. I take all of my animals here (4 dogs and 3 rats)- My chihuahua, Penny Lane, had to go in today for a bunch of work; a dental (yes, they do monitor while they preform the cleaning!!!), a spay, a microchip, heartworm/ehrlichia/lyme tests, a pre-anesthetic blood test, and she had to have 3 tooth extractions. She came home with pain meds and antibiotics. When they told me the price I literally said "yay!" and clapped my hands. Please check them out if you need a vet! Plus the hospital has been certified "LEED Gold". They the first veterinary hospital in the country to earn this advanced "green" certification!!! read more

My godmother referred me here when I complained to her about not finding any vets around Vail/Rita Ranch that I A) Liked. and B) Could afford. I was SUPER impressed with CAH and Dr. Samuels! Their prices are very competitive, and the service is A+. Although it is a 45 minute drive for me, each way, I will definitely be going back here for my dog's regular needs in the future. My senior citizen dog needed a benign tumor removed, and their quote was about 1/3 what I was expecting (and the price included take home meds after surgery plus the follow up appointment). The vet techs and Dr. Samuels were both great with her, even though she is a bit skittish with strangers. She calmed down pretty quickly, which I was amazed at. Pleasant bedside manner is not a necessity at a vet really if they are competent, I know. But it was much appreciated. We just had her stitches removed, 2 weeks post op, yesterday. Easy peas-y. This place is awesome. Not that there are probably many bad veterinary clinics, but the people here are so above and beyond. Curt, one of the techs, is the best I have ever encountered with cats. I just couldn't believe it. My cat is not terribly difficult but he doesn't like meeting new people. When Curt picked Marcel up he just melted in Curt's arms. I was amazed. Dr. Samuels is probably my favorite veterinarian I have encountered. No pressure for expensive treatments that might not help much. I have been to many vets all over the country. This place won my heart as the best, and I mean every staff member I dealt with. They remember your name and your little buddy's from a single visit. Superb!!! read more
