I emailed this vet, asking for the full cost and any additional services and costs to neuter a cat. I was given a reply to my email with a specific price and nail clipping that would be extra but could be declined. Of course, after my son took a day off from work ( losing money) they thought they could say oh he needs these shots and two separate blood tests, this is not counting they wanted two separate appointments when on the phone it was supposed to be ONE appointment. We have three cats - two are fifteen years old (brothers) and the third is seventeen years old. Dr. Maus is a godsend to all three. The cats are remarkably healthy, even with two having kidney disease, thanks to the excellent care they receive at Catalina Pet Hospital. The vet clinic has sourced a third party to do check-up type calls and that service is terrible and misleading. They say it's illegal to have cats who aren't up to date on rabies which is not true. Our three cats are indoor only and while rabies shots are recommended, it is not a requirement in Arizona. I've corrected them and they continue to insist. I've asked to be taken off their call list and they continue to call me. Other than this third party, the office staff and vets are top-notch. They work hard to ensure cats are seen in a timely manner and any issues are addressed. Also, Dr. Maus is very transparent about pricing and options to ensure a trip isn't going to set you back further than you're able to afford. read more

Dr. Sandate is such a patient and fantastic Veterinarian. The Vet Techs are professional and polite as well. The front desk employees are quick and professional. In response to a text I received from Catalina Pet Hospital asking how my recent visit was, I responded: I had no recent visit. While it may be beneficial to the owners' pocketbook to have a busy office, the fact that your office is not capable of answering phones in a timely manner is not beneficial to your patrons or your phone staff. And though I may have been influenced to schedule an appointment in part by the your 4.8ish online ratings, I was influenced to cancel by the unavailability of your overstretched phone staff (ownership's fault) your non refundable $65 fee (a bit adversarial) and the availability of very good alternatives in the community. If you are able to grow your business, realize that if you do so at the expense of your staff and continue your coercive policy of keeping potential customers' $65 fees when they choose to cancel days in advance, whatever positives have so far gained you your positive reviews will likely begin to fade away. Since my character has come into question with Catalina Pet Hospital. Here is a time line of what happened & a new review. They're stating incorrect facts & not taking accountability for their lack of professionalism. They're stating they recommend a new vet because of the combative language I used to their staff and the fear of their safety. I for sure said FU to them, there is no doubt about that but that was the very last thing I said to them & the last call I received when they canceled my appt. after me asking to get her in sooner telling them the reasons why & being told it's not necessary over & over again. 3/8/2021 I called them to let them know what was going on with Boo & seeing if there was any way they could see her & help us out. told them everything the emergency vet clinic told me & even emailed them the documents that was provided  to me by the emergency vet. The person who answered the phone was very nice & said once the doctor reviewed the documents she would call me back. At this point she was scheduled to go in on 3/11/21.3/8/21 3:55pm about 6 hours had gone by, I called them back to make sure they received the documents & was told they did but the doctor has not reviewed the documents.she would call me back later.3/8/21 sometime around 5ish I received a call back,& of course they didn't listen to me when I told them the correct # to call & that has been an issue with them in the past where for some reason they don't save my cell phone # & call the house. In that call I'm being told Dr. Maus does not think it is necessary to bring her in until we get her valleyfever test back and parathyroid panel & we will just keep the 3/11/21 appt. Which was not what the emergency vet recommended, they asked for me to take her somewhere for additional testing. No need to wait for other test. At that time I was like okay. 3/9/21 I sent an email to them requesting Boo's records because she was getting worse & I had no idea what to do if they were not willing to see her sooner. I had not heard anything back.3/9/21 9:13am I called the emergency vet to ask if they received the results back for the tests.  I was told no. I broke down to them stating the vet is stating it's not necessary to get her in sooner & Boo is just getting worse & I told him I didn't know what to do anymore. He stated them waiting was wrong and there was no reason to have to wait just for those test results. Sure those test could tell us some things or they might not but she's getting worse & there is other testing needed to be done. He recommended I find another place to take her or bring her back to them. 3/9/21 1:42pm I called Catalina Pet hospital & was placed on hold & after being on hold I was hung up on. 3/9/21 1:44 I called them back, I let them know hey I sent an email about Boo's records could you email me those. First I was told Boo does not have records with us. Then I was like excuse me she's been going there since she was little. Sure we hadn't been for a couple of years & I took her else where but I won't get into those reasons why. I knew I should have never called them in the first place for help. The girl then stated well do you want everything & I said yes. Because I'm trying to take her somewhere that cares & wants to help her because she's getting worse and I don't know what they will need, I just want everything at this point I was not happy but not rude towards her. At this point the girl had a little attitude. She told me well the doctor needs to approve it & once she does we will send it over. I said thank you and hung up on her. Knowing my dog is getting worse day by day & being told it's not necessary to see her blows my mind. A dog that is barely eating or drinking now, can barely walk & now pooping herself is not a necessary reason to see her sooner! 3/10/21 Catalina Pet hospital sent an email with her records. 3/10/21 10:21 I received a phone call from Catalina Pet Hospital stating they sent Boos records & the DOCTOR canceled her appointment. At this point I said are you Fucking kidding because I asked for her records & because of that you want to cancel her appointment because I was trying to find someone who wanted to help sooner. That's when I said Fuck You and that was literally the last thing I said to your staff. 3/10/21 I had a vet willing to see her else where.3/12/21 I took boo back to the emergency vet as she got way worse.  3/13/21 my dog was dead.3/14/21 I left a review.3/17/21 Catalina Pet Hospital responded to my review. They stated incorrect info. Stating they canceled my appt& recommend a new vet per the safety of their staff for the combative language I used. Again let's get this straight I said FU on the very last call where you canceled my appt Not before so please stop lying! Please see items attached. My first review & their response. The staff were good to me and my dog but the admin or however they handle patient relations are very unprofessional and unethical. They just cut off my dog from the clinic without any notification. I found out as I was trying to schedule vaccination for my dog which came as a shock to me. There was some confusion about meds that they NEVER clarified with me, not even any notice. How can they assume the worst without even investigating that too based on some other vet's assumption (I have a behavior therapist for my dog, Dr Moffat from VCA Mesa, who btw NEVER reached out to me with any concerns or clarification either). This is very unprofessional. I am a human doctor and deeply saddened by this experience. I emailed and called multiple times but no one has reached out with any clarification or put in any effort to sort this out. I was just transferring meds to get better deal on GoodRx. I have two vets but still got the meds from only one doctor, I always called in for the change, her staff told me to transfer meds myself and not call them because they were too lazy to do it. But no one bothered to call to get an explanation and cut us off. Now I have to re establish care for my dog, and figure out vaccinations when his license is about to expire and he has anxiety issues too so can't just go to any clinic. I have no issues that they had concerns, I understand that happens but the way they handled it -- I see that they have no concern for their clients and are not at all an advocate for their patients. I made an appointment yesterday December 8th for my dog to go in on Monday December 13th. I paid a deposit of 63.50 to them thinking that if I canceled it within 24 hours that it would be refunded back to me right? NOPE! I canceled today December 9th and they won't give me my money back!!! Who runs a business like this? It's my money and I canceled as I was able to find another vet to see her sooner! So I lose my deposit! What the heck? Contacting the better business bureau if they don't honor a refund to me! Don't go here! They think they are entitled to my money even though I canceled with proper notice! For what reason??? read more

I am also surprised by the rave reviews. The staff appear knowledgeable but seem to lack compassion perhaps due to the stilted communication over the phone, as it interferes with ease of exchange that happens with in person conversations. I mentioned feeling as though extra services (costs) were "encouraged" or expected to be scheduled as mentioned in other reviews here. I've since had a second opinion the Catalina diagnosis & procedure recommendation for a "broken tooth" extraction with a rounded cost from $600 to $1000 charge (including the $120 discount for "Dental Month Discount"). That second option did recommend Dental care but they could not find a broken tooth & will be doing this for several hundred less than Catalina Pet Hospital quoted for this portion of the work (not including extraction in this comparison). In addition, 2 of the "yearly" shots are not necessary in Tucson although they were considered standard in Minnesota. A couple of other "yearly" services were optional when I stated I did not want them as our dogs have not needed these. The current vet allowed the dogs & I in the exam room (I have a N95 mask & the space was large enough for social distancing) allowing for an actual conversation. read more

Excellent customer service from the front desk and support staff. I had so many questions regarding my dog and the shot for allergies. It is new to me and I decided not to do it when I first called and then I called back and decided to do it. What a pain in the butt I was and let me just tell you the patience that they had with me, the professionalism and the fact that they know who my dog is it was wonderful! I know that they were very busy and Dr. Maus took the time to answer questions when they would go back and ask her for me. Maintaining your animals health and having a relationship with the veterinarian more than once every couple years is incredibly beneficial. I'm honestly surprised by all the great reviews saying that their price is reasonable. While I agree that the staff seem knowledgeable and friendly, I can't agree about the price. My dog was diagnosed with a torn ACL. I was quoted $5,000 for the surgery. Furthermore, I was quoted $952 to extract a tooth. I was devastated. How could I possibly afford to pay for that? I asked around, and quickly found that the quote I was given was ridiculously high. Three different reputable vets all quoted me less than $2000 for BOTH surgeries. I ended up paying $1,747, more than half of what Catalina quoted and am very happy with the outcome of the surgery and tooth extraction. Sorry, Catalina, but we will not be coming back. read more

I honestly love this place. I was so thankful to find such a wonderful vet that was so personable and friendly. It was also a HUGE plus that they accept Care Credit, which is primarily what I use to pay for any pet services, since I have 3 pets. Extremely disappointing to find out that when I really need to get meds for my puppy, I can't pay with my Care Credit card because of a new policy that they will only take it if the charge is over 200$. Not every vet visit is going to be 200$ and it's extremely frustrating when there are plenty of people who use this to help with unexpected expenses. I'm really upset to have to find a new vet to take my pets to because of this. read more

Going there has been one of the most worst experiences in my life. They are classist and from other reviews and what other people have told me, racist as well. They ended up misdiagnosing my beloved cat. The vet, Dr. Weaver, only spent TWO minutes looking her over when she was having serious issues, and then wanted me to pay for unnecessary imaging based on this incorrect assumption/diagnosis. I returned to the vet I had before COVID, and at that clinic, the vet spent OVER HALF AN HOUR with my cat and I, and we received the correct diagnosis. Last week, I had a highly professional and cordial phone discussion with Catalina Pet Clinic's "interim manager" regarding my improper treatment with the condescending tones and odd discriminatory remarks from staff members, which made me feel like I did not belong there, along with their overall lack of communication, which this manager ADMITS IS an issue there. Well, this manager, reached out to my new "old" vet to compare medical records, which I said was okay, and GUESS WHAT?! She stabbed me in the back and bad-mouthed me to my new vet clinic, and now I can no longer take my cat there!! I am absolutely livid and actually somewhat physically scared of these people... DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU VALUE YOUR FUR BABY's LIFE(S), YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY, OR YOUR REPUTATION. read more

I can't recommend Catalina Pet Hospital enough. My dogs have been coming here for over 5 years, with great service and care by both the vets and the rest of the staff. We recently had to come in for emergency surgery and Dr. Maus found room in her schedule to take my pug immediately (so we could avoid paying the pricier emergency hospital rates). I am so grateful that they could accommodate us at this terrifying time, and that my little pug was treated by people she knows and that are so sweet to her. My rescue mutt is family, and at Catalina Pet Hospital, they honor that. Everyone is so compassionate, the receptionists remember my puppy's name from one visit to the next, and the care is excellent. We've seen all three doctors, and like them all. Dr. Maus's pet care leans toward integrative, Dr. Cohen was incredibly sympathetic and kind when he helped my sister's cat on to her 10th life (since then, I have a soft spot for him), and Eberhard is great too. They all recognize that pets are family, are very patient, love the animals, and take their jobs seriously. Further, they stay on top of you to keep appointments and make sure vaccinations are up to date, and they have an online pet portal that tracks the progress of your pet, and sends email updates. I spent a LOT of money here, due to the puppy's Valley Fever, but I always felt it was well worth it and I was being dealt with honestly, professionally, and warmly. read more

She showed great compassion with my cats and was awesome with my pit-bull mix. The receptionist was about average I guess, helpful but a little distracted. Overall my experience was great. I took my two beloved cats here for years before I moved to another state. Both of them have their own special issues: one born with a neurological issue and some gnarly teeth, the other born with a deformed leg/paw. I have been taking my cats and dogs to Dr. Cohen at Catalina for about 13 years. Cat with diabetes, dog with Valley Fever(going on 7 years), cat with cancer-he's treated it all and done so with professionalism. No matter what doctor is seen they are always direct and knowledgable; always giving a follow up call. The staff is friendly and helpful. Dr Maus has determined that my cat has valley fever. $580 later. At least there's finally a [very expensive] diagnosis! That's a huge relief. However, I'm reading online, on a number of animal health websites, that a chest x-ray and blood panel should be done if valley fever is even suspected in a pet. Dr Maus has not mentioned either to me. Maybe she knows money is an issue for me so does not mention these [apparently] standard tests? Or is she just not thorough? Who knows. She had the secretary tell me my pet has valley fever - too busy to talk to me herself I guess. The secretary said the doctor left me a voicemail - and she had so kudos there. 10:30 AM: SPOKE TO THE OFFICE. I was informed of pet's diagnosis of valley fever by a secretary, not Dr Mauss. There was no conversation with me about this vary serious condition, which many cats die from (I've since learned). A serious diagnosis, and not ONE piece of information that an owner might like to know, such as: -What is the prognosis? How is it treated? What are the chances of recovery? How long does my pet take meds for? How was it contracted? Is it contagious to other animals? Should I do anything for my sick pet other than give him the meds, such as dietary or activity level changes? ---I WAS GIVEN ZERO INFORMATION ABOUT MY PET'S NEW AND SERIOUS DIAGNOSIS.--- -Unbelievable, after $580 in tests the doctor could not be bothered to educate me on even the basics of this illness. (I just moved to AZ from Alaska, the doctor knows this. Maybe most people in Tucson know about this illness but I'd only ever heard the name before. I learned everything I know about Valley Fever from the Internet that day.) -The secretary said they would call in the prescription to my pharmacy. Confirmed the pharmacy name. 1:00 PM: STILL NO PRESCRIPTION CALLED IN. I called Catalina Pet Hospital and was told the doctor and the only secretary/assistant who could call in the prescription were out to lunch. -- 2-1/2 HOURSi s not enough time to call in a script for a deadly illness?? -- 2:15 PM: PRESCRIPTION CALLED IN. This was a Monday. I asked for a complete copy of my pet's records and in reading them learned that the lab results which showed Valley Fever were received by the doctor the Friday before. Why wasn't I told and a prescription called in that day? Why wait 3 days and only after I had to ask more than once? This is unacceptable animal "care" for me. 30% of cats who get Valley Fever die from it, so I read. Those are not good odds and I care deeply for my pet's well-being. Maybe those stats are incorrect, but I still feel the doctor should have gotten that script in the same day the diagnosis was received from the lab, rather than three days later. Then, the prescription - it is a 6 month supply with no information about how long to administer it. For one month? For the entire 6 months? Do I get the pet checked at some point in there? I had to call the office yet again to get some clarification here. This was crazy. Before I was told the diagnosis, I met someone at the dog park to whom I was relating my $580-but-no-diagnosis-yet situation, and she said, "That wasn't Dr Maus by any chance, was it?" I said Yes, and she rolled her eyes and shared her own less than satisfied story from Catalina Pet Hospital. I'm glad my friends who recommended me to Dr. Maus are happy with her, but, she just did not provide a very good experience for me. read more

Extremely unhappy. My wife was taking my dog for a walk and he passed out. She called Catalina pet hospital to let them know about his situation and to inform them that she was waiting for a taxi to get him there. They didn't forward the call to a doctor and they refused to accept her, telling her that she needs to take him to an emergency clinic. So she took him to Acacia pet hospital that was near our place. With no appointment the doctor accepted her and spend almost four hours doing all the exams to make absolutely sure that our dog was ok. Two days later I called at Catalina and asked to speak with Dr Maus. They hadn't even bother to call us and check if our dog was dead or alive. When I confronted her she told me that she specializes in teeth and if there something urgent they advice to take our pets to an emergency clinic. In conclusion if you love your pet and you need a vet that can treat something more serious than a mouth exam do not take it there!!! I can't even describe how frustrated I am and if my dog had died I would ask for legal action against them. read more

I have been a client of Catalina Pet Hospital for over 35 years and was told that if my dogs lump on her head ever grows to contact them and get in ASAP. I am extremely disappointed. They were irresponsible and treated me unprofessionally. My dog fainted , his tongue was white , he was hardly breathing and called them at 430 pm for first aid instructions until I could go there . The secretary that answered the phone did not forward the call to the doctor , told me to go to the urgent care , did not give me any help although I was crying and told her that I do not have a car and I was alone , she just told me to write down the urgent care clinic number ! They did not even bother to call us the next day ! The dog was bitten by a bug and I went to Acacia animal clinic which was closer than the urgent care clinic they told me . The doctor saw us immediately ran all tests and stayed for us for four hours . The next day , We called Catalina and asked to speak to the doctor who claimed that they are not a specialized clinic , do not run blood tests and especially Dr Maus who I used to appreciate told us that she is specialized on teeth !!! And I am wondering how could they neuter animals ( we had our dog fixed there ) if they are not a clinic ! Anyway , I could comment on more but I really do not feel like doing that here . I have a large breed Great Pyrenees. They react to anesthesia differently than other breeds. Dr. Amanda Maus has treated all three of my Great Pyrenees including dental surgery as well as being spayed or neutered. She has experience with this breed and what she does not know immediately she works tirelessly to research and find an answer or option. She is direct yet compassionate which I appreciate the combination of the two. Yes, they are on the higher end in regards to price but I am on the Paw Plan and that helps a great deal. You definitely want to learn more about that plan. My boy has an issue with his anal glands filling up so we are there on a fairly regular basis for that. Techs and office staff are friendly. Dr. Maus is a big fan of the feline and the ones I have had to bring in she was thorough and knowledgeable. read more

When we moved to Tucson, this was the vet we chose for our dog based on their great reviews. I'm sad to say that after a year of service here, we are unhappy customers. The employees never seem happy and if they do show a smile it seems forced. I always feel like I'm inconveniencing them if I have a request for something as small as a copy of my dogs shot records. I don't recommend them, and I will be taking my business to someone who seems more enthusiastic about helping my pet. read more

Acceptable but not wonderful. Dr. Maus is a good vet who is pleasant and helpful. The front desk staff do their job, room you and your pet, check you out, and wish you good day. It's not terribly expensive. It's okay but not great. I recently needed to have my dog seen urgently and they stayed open an extra 15 minutes to get us in--which was great. The vet (Dr. Cohen) was convinced my dog was female (nope) and the disconnect in that experience highlighted the 'meh' nature of this place. My dog's not going to be harmed by Dr. Cohen's lack of attention, but I don't really feel like I'm much of a priority, either. You get the treatment you need, but there's not really a personal feel to it...if you are looking for a vet, there are 3 vets here. If you're looking for someone who will treat your dog like you treat him, you might be disappointed. read more

Catalina Pet Hospital is as good as it gets! My vet is Dr. Buzz, aka: Dr. Cohen. I've been going there for almost 8 years now. I have 3 dogs now and have seen three of the vets there. All have been thorough, knowledgeable, recognize the 'sibling' fur-babies at home, take past issues into account (which means they read their charts) and are very good with each of their personalities. Our dog was attacked pretty viciously this morning. We called Catalina Pet Hospital at 8 am (their opening time). They answered and let us know that there was no one there yet but asked if we could hold while they contacted a doctor. When they came back on the line, they told us to come right down. We brought Fred in and they were able to perform surgery on him. They were courteous and thorough. Dr. Maus called us multiple times during the day to update us on Fred's status.
