I walked into Central Continental Bakery today with my 89 year old mother who has lived in Mt. Prospect since 1969. I've been there 100s of times and have been a good customer. There were more employees than customers when I walked in and I was planning to buy a cake for my daughter's 18th Birthday. No one said may I help you and when I did ask if there is someone to help with the cakes she said did you take a number? It wasn't really crowded enough for numbers and she should of said someone will be with you shortly. Instead she made it like I did something wrong. Won't be back any time soon. I counted 6 workers. I know they were not all counter workers but someone should have seen me looking at the cakes and acknowledged I was there. If you have high prices you especially need excellent customer service even if you have a good product. I am now on my way to Francos in Schaumburg. They are nice there. read more

Our wedding cake was through Central Continental Bakery as part of our wedding package at Medinah Shrine Center. I was thinking that since it was part of the package it would just be a simple cake. I was also nervous when I went to their temporary location in April that they would keep the cake for my 300 guests simple. I was very pleasantly surprised that I was wrong about both things. Our cake ended up being a beautiful and delicious 5 layer cake with alternating shapes, details and flavors. Every other layer was yellow with chocolate or white with strawberry bavarian. I really felt like the flavors pleased everyone's tastes, and the cake standing in the middle of the dance floor when we walked in was stunning! read more

Girlfriend surprised me with 2 donuts (cinnamon sugar and chocolate frosted) and a slice of cake. The donuts were dry/crumbly and on par with Dunkin Donuts. Do-Rite and Stan's donuts are far superior. The cake was a pile of cloyingly sweet coconut frosting layered between thin tasteless layers of chocolate (?) cake. I like coconut but the filling was so gunky, I could only eat 3 forkfuls before pitching it. If anyone can eat the whole piece of cake, shame on them. It was probably 2000 calories. My mom and I walked into the bakery, and we weren't greeted, however were asked if we were together. The two young women working looked mad that we came in. The paczki at Central Continental Bakery were recommended to me by Ericka A. and Aimee M., and these ladies are spot on with their recommendation! CCB has the biggest variety of flavors of paczki I've seen anywhere or can even comprehend. I placed an order online (pre-ordering is THE thing to do if you have your heart set on any flavors in particular). The gourmet flavors are a little more than $3, but totally worth it compared to those grocery store hockey pucks they try to pass off as paczki. My favorites were the Lady Godiva (chocolate dough, chocolate filling, chocolately without being sickly rich and possibly, perfect), the Key Lime Pie and the Salted Caramel. I also tried their cream cheese but it tasted more like custard and lacked the sweetness that cheese pastries usually have. The dough is also really good. When I got home I transferred the paczki from their cardboard box to glass Pyrex dishes with lids to keep them from drying out. I picked mine up on Tuesday, ate one Wednesday evening, and they showed no signs of drying out. If you are picking up on Fat Tuesday, be prepared to meet a crowd of people. They only had one line for everyone, but it moved fast. At 9:26 a.m. (my order was for 10:00 a.m.), I was #68. I looked up and saw they were serving #15! Surprisingly, I was in and out of here in approximately half an hour. And while crowds are usually cranky, the fatties on Fat Tuesday were all in pretty good moods, even the ones that were going to be late for work. Next year I plan on making the 1 hour+ trip again to CCB to try other flavors like the Root Beer Float! read more

I saw this place had a ROTD, and I'd totally forgotten that I've had it before. So, here it goes. My aunt got married and had her reception at Arlington Park Race Track in 2009. The cake was from Central Continental. HOLY CRAP. I'm not going to lie... it was the best cake I'd ever had. Vanilla frosting, with Vanilla cake and a buttercream filling. I had 6 pieces... it was SO GOOD (Note: this was right after my huge weight loss event, and I've kept it off since. Moderation is key... it's okay to go nuts once in a while!) I raved and raved about this cake continously thereafter. As a result, My aunt, one of the greatest ladies of all time, actually ordered the same cake, on a smaller scale, for my birthday, later in the year. STILL AMAZING. I can't speak about anything else at Central Continental, but if anything else comes close to their cake, well, I'm glad I live far away because I'd be here way too often. I had a chance to return last week, and I just have to say: NO ONE does it like they do. Homemade marzipan - delicious, sweet, great texture. Diples that drip with honey and flavor and amazing texture. So many options for pastries, but the flavors at this bakery outshine any of those other li'l mom & pop places I've been. Central Continental made my wedding cake and all of the sweets and treats we had on our dessert table at our wedding. Our cake was delicious and beautiful. We had 2 layers of vanilla and three layers of chocolate each filled with fresh raspberries. It couldn't have tasted any better. I've been to several weddings since that have had raspberry in the cake, but none of them compared to how our cake tasted. The decoration on the cake was classic and elegant. We simply dropped off the ribbon we wanted to use and they took care of the rest. It looked beautiful. The dessert trays were wonderful as well. It included napoleons, petit fours, cream puffs, mocha eclairs, chocolate dipped strawberries, little cheesecakes and a bunch of other goodies. After a second failed attempt to get my shizz done at the social security office, I was kinda in a pissy mood. Let me tell you what a difference some paczki and a coffee will make!! It's an unassuming facade, but you walk in and it's paczki heaven!!! But not only that, danishes, king cakes, donuts, bread, pies... you name it and I will bet it's there. There is a whole 2 (maybe even 3!!) cases dedicated to the almighty paczki, so this is no joke. Tiramisu, black forest, pina colada??? Dang. The husband and I got 3 paczkis- strawberry whipped cream, Swedish flop and apple. We also got a glazed donut, a glazed french cruller and a raspberry danish. Everything we tried was fresh and tasty. The strawberry whipped cream was ridiculously good.. the whipped cream airy and light, the strawberries were fresh and not too sweet and the donut sandwiching the innards were fluffy and soft. Even the coffee was surprisingly good. I will definitely make my way to this store everytime I'm out this way!! And, free parking on the street!!
