Food took forever and still burnt pancakes. No gloves or washed hands from the cook in kitchen. Microwaved sausage gravy that sits in a bucket in the back of the kitchen. What a memorable pit stop! We pulled in expecting a quick bite and were met with the warm welcome of Angie--the friendly blonde server you might recognize from other reviews. She was fantastic and definitely didn't fit the vibe some negative comments suggest. Her service was outstanding--she even opened our bottled waters for us! Prices were super reasonable. We each went for three loaded chili dogs, and they hit the spot. The chef even joked, asking if he'd "thrown enough grease on there"--exactly the kind of cheeky fun you'd expect from a great hot dog joint, not a five-star steakhouse. The atmosphere? Unforgettable. From vibrant locals selling clothes outside to a half-asleep gentleman on a nearby bench, and stories of flying plates courtesy of the kitchen staff (you'll have to ask the chef yourself!)--it all adds up to a one-of-a-kind experience that somehow just works. 24 hour place. Ordered 2:12 am with 1/2 hour delivery window stated. Ordered a "mushroom"burger and some loaded fries. $10 delivery fee. I called back an hour later to be placed on "hold" with the phone on the counter. Maybe one order discussed in that time but more gabbing from the staff than anything. The discussion had nothing to do with orders, they were BS'ing about political opinions. They finally got on saying my order hadn't left the restaurant yet. They apologized stating they were "the only restaurant open" and were super busy. No discount, just an apology, and promise the food wood leave the store soon. Order arrived and 40 minutes after the window. I left a tip with the driver as she was respectful and apologetic. 1. Food was warm, so left hot from the store. 2. NONE of the fries were browned - all just barely cooked and still very white. (Speed was clearly their focus instead of a quality product) 3. This might be a local thing, but the mushroom burger had A LOT of ketchup and mustard. 4. The chili/cheese on the loaded fries had grease overflowing. That went outside the styrofoam carton onto the bottom, which was in a plastic bag. the plastic bag was partially split, so quite a bit of orange grease got on the hotel bed sheets... poor choice on my part sitting it in the bed for a moment. 5. No removal of the $10 delivery charge was offered for the tardiness and inconvenience. I've eaten all around the country and this was far from a decent experience. They need better management oversight to assess: who is actually contributing to their operation, who needs retraining, and a boot for the lackadaisical folk(s). read more

I guess not every restaurant can be Gramercy Tavern or Spiaggia. Don't eat here if you're hoping to experience life altering gastronomic rapture. Don't eat here if you're skittish about the neighborhood, (in which case you're probably just a sissy boy). DO eat here if you are hung over and need some grease in your diet. Due to COVID, you can only order inside, no eating or waiting on your order. No issues with that, just passing along the info. The food is reasonably cheap and the food is alright. Due to the name and not being from the area, I genuinely thought this was a hot dog joint. Don't come here if you're simply looking for a hot dog. I did walk away with 3 chili dogs (apparently that's where the name comes from). The food is greasy spoon / short order, mostly everything previously frozen and then deep fried type of place. Central Hot Dog is a run down micro diner with creepy clients and bad food. I visited with my teenage son on the way to the Great Lakes Museum, since not a lot is open on the day after Christmas. My son ordered up the chicken gyro for his lunch, which according to a sign in the diner is 'ranked as Toledo's best'. Sorry Central Hot Dog people, but a couple of small chicken pieces mixed with mushrooms, peppers and cheese does not constitute gyro filling - nor does serving these ingredients in a hoagie roll. Maybe they misspelled Hero and wrote Gyro on the menu instead? Whatever the case, it looked disgusting. For my lunch, I went for the roast beef and gravy. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't really good either. They gave me a huge portion of instant potatoes covered in a brown gravy. The bread that came with it was a couple of pieces of greasy toast with garlic powder sprinkled on top. Two bites of that nastiness was enough for me - I value my arterial circulation. The years have not been kind to the inside of CHD. The walls look filthy, and it doesn't appear that much maintenance has been done to the interior in the last forty years. In the center of diner hangs a ceiling fan with nearly an inch of greasy dirt on the blades, some of which has managed to creep over the edges and slowly begin to reach for the floor. Everyone behind the counter acted like they were miserable being there. There wasn't anyone that was particularly friendly with us. The one lesson I can take away from my experience at Central Hot Dog is this: It almost ALWAYS pays to read the reviews BEFORE dining at an establishment. I don't make a habit of writing bad reviews, but this is a public service. Maybe they can close up and slide away. CHD is good at 2 in the morning when the rest of Toledo is sleeping. There are only a few places open at that time of the morning, and unfortunatly this is one of them. I used to live not more than a block from this place and when I lived in Toledo, CHD was a good place for breakfast and a quick burger. Something happened because now the food reeks. The crowd is the usual biker/tattooed clientele that do not appreciate fine dining. They never noticed the change. I did. Fortunatly, St V's hospital is less than one mile away. They can undo what you did to yourself eating at this shithole. Better yet, walk out the door, point your shoes north and walk one block to Toms. The best bbq in Toledo. You'll be glad you did. Central Hot Dog has been there for AT LEAST 25 years. Yes it looks like the original grease from the original owner is still there - but CHD is a classic in East Toledo I live in Atlanta now but recently went back to Toledo for a family visit. HAD to stop at CHD. Not much has changed except the owner but if you want a king-sized breakfast - had ham and cheese omelet, home fries and toast - this is the place to go. No, not gourmet food but working class, fill you up chow. Omelet and home fries took over the entire platter - yes, its a greasy spoon but food is decent and filling and price is right. For those of you that complain about NOT getting something, thats your own dang fault for being afraid to open your moutn. DON'T be a crybaby. Tell them - not cry like a little girl on YELP! Huge portions! One meal can feed 2 people. Me and my lady ordered omelets the other night and it was way too much food for the both us to eat. We wasted a lot of food and money. They are not cheap or expensive. The food was cooked quickly and to our specifications. However, the food was bland in flavor. (No seasoning.) And the omelets had old green peppers in them which made them taste like dishwater. Yeck! Hence, the low mark for food quality. The diced potatoes where good. I can tell that they use real butter based upon the toast, but the jelly was a cheap brand. The best thing I can say is that they are fast. I'll probably try them again in about 6 months once I've forgotten this experience. However, I will know how to order better. read more

Horrible service over and over again when I call. So tonight I call and place an order at 12:10 am I called around 2:00 am to see where it was. 3:00 am comes around and still no food. So I call again and get told rudely that they came to my house and banged on the door and called me which I'm laying on my living room couch and the door is wide open and I never received a phone call. I would give this place one star but it's a dog shop, so whatever. Can't get prissy when looking for the perfect dog. This is not the place. A few transient types sitting outside and when I walked in everyone looked at me like I was some kind of apparition or something. Anyway I am from brew city so pretty easy going about drunk townies. they offer a sub-par dog at a fair price. Asked for fries but got none. Pretty sure I paid for it but no receipt was given and Hell if I was gunna stir-up this wasp's nest. He asked if it was to go and I said no. He looked at me like I had just invited myself to eat in his living room, so I ate outside at one of the picnic tables. Actually a cool sitting area here. Hard to take in but if you can tunnel vision the view of downtown Toledo and waterfront is great. Overheard some interesting conversation from inside while eating, and haven't heard some of those words since the NAVY. Unfortunately, shitty dog and service is really sketchy or nonexistent.
