We got several quotes, and the prices were all fairly similar. But Tony took the time to send us photos and videos of the roof so we understood exactly why each part of the work needed to be done. That transparency is why we chose him, and we couldn't have been luckier that we did. Once the work began, it turned out our roof hadn't been built to code in the first place. Years of water damage meant the plywood and even several rafters had to be replaced. Tony walked us through every step and kept sending us videos throughout the process. Naturally, these unexpected findings added to the cost, but he was incredibly understanding about our situation and gave us generous discounts on the additional work and materials. At the time, my father-in-law was working as a roofer in New York, so I was able to run everything by him. He confirmed that everything Tony found and recommended was completely legitimate. DO NOT USE - Unreliable Roofing Contractor - Nightmare!…read more We hired Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. in June 2022 to repair the roof of our condo building and build a new deck on top of it. Unfortunately, our experience with them was a nightmare, and we feel compelled to share it with others to prevent anyone else from going through the same ordeal. First and foremost, the contractor used incorrect materials while building the deck. To add insult to injury, they charged us for more expensive materials than they actually used, displaying a complete lack of integrity and transparency. We mutually agreed with the contractor in advance in writing that the roof deck would be built with "Trex Transcend" composite decking in Rope Swing color; the contractor, however, built our roof deck with "Trex Enhance G2 Grooved" composite decking in Foggy Wharf color, a material of much lesser quality that is already breaking in some areas. To make matters worse, the deck construction was carried out in a way that now leaves our roof in violation of building codes. Not only did they fail to adhere to regulations, but they also neglected to inform us of these potential issues during the process, and when we let them know that their work was out of code, they did not apologize, would not fix their work to align with code, and blamed it on us when they are the experts. Furthermore, upon inspection by independent experts, it was determined that the roof deck framing is not structurally sound. We were advised that (a) there are narrow pieces of wood supporting the west side of the roof deck, which do not align with standards of practice in the industry and will pierce the roof's membrane as weight is applied, (2) the roof substructure was laid incorrectly, preventing the free flow of water to the scuppers, and (3) already, various portions of the roof deck are loose and detached from the frame, making the roof deck unsafe to walk on. This poses a substantial risk to the safety of those in our building and our guests. Throughout the project, communication was very difficult and minimal, and they showed little to no concern for our satisfaction or the quality of their work. When we raised our concerns, they were dismissive and unresponsive, leaving us feeling frustrated and deceived. We strongly advise anyone considering hiring Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. to NOT HIRE THEM. Their unprofessionalism, lack of expertise, and disregard for customer satisfaction have left us with a costly and dangerous mess to clean up, including having to re-do all of the work. On top of that, we reached out for a refund, and they would not comply or even respond to us despite their defective, fraudulent and grossly negligent acts and omissions, and we will need to re-perform the work with a new vendor. Please learn from our unfortunate experience and look for a reputable and trustworthy contractor to handle your roofing and deck projects who is NOT Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. Don't let yourself fall victim to the same nightmare we endured.

Mike first came to give me an estimate by walking around the house while I explained what needed to be done. He gave me an estimate of $10,000 and mentioned that if I wanted to fix the small roof in the front, it would be an additional $1,000. I told him I would think about it and get back to him. When he returned for a second look, he said the first chimney if nothing connects it we will close it if something connects it we will rebuild it (which he refused to rebuild it and he said if I want to rebuild it I need to pay extra $1400) and the tuck pointing under the second chimney required the chimney to be removed and rebuilt, raising the total to $14,000. Even though I received lower estimates from others, I trusted Mike and decided to go with him. We went to his car, where he wrote the proposal, but I didn't realize at the time that he left out the small roof area we had previously discussed. I signed the contract, and he told me they could start the following week. After I handed him the check, Mike suddenly said his foreman had called, and they couldn't start next week, but in three weeks instead. I was frustrated but decided it wasn't a big deal since the work was outside and wouldn't affect my tenants too much. After that day, Mike never called to give me updates. Three weeks later, I called him to ask when they would start, and he said he would call me back, but never did. I called again four hours later, and he said his foreman would call, but that didn't happen either. I called the next day, and Mike's phone went straight to voicemail. I contacted the Second City Roofing office and explained the situation. Someone there said they would get back to me, and a few hours later, Mike called saying they couldn't start that week, but would begin mid-next week. I was still patient, trying to keep things cool. When I called again the following Tuesday for an update, Mike said he would come by with his foreman to inspect the bricks needed for my place, and they would start Thursday. At this point, I had waited almost a month, so I told him if they didn't start by Wednesday, I would want my money back. They finally started on Wednesday, but Mike never inspected these bricks with his foreman as he said. When the work was done, Mike didn't offer to do a walk-through to review the job. He came to collect the final check without a ladder, so I refused to pay until he did a proper walk-through. The next day, he brought his foreman, and we did the walk-through, after which I gave him the last check. This whole experience was incredibly frustrating. The delays, poor communication, and lack of professionalism were unacceptable. I will never work with them again.

I did my research and contacted several contractors who made appointments to visit and provide a quote. Needless to say, most weren't interested I guess, because several didn't show up after making appointments or when they did their quotas were ridiculously high. Eduardo of Eagle Roofing & Masonry was by far the most professional and responsive contractor I've ever dealt with and I'm a Director of Operations for a high rise! Most importantly, after completing the project, there were a couple of minor issues, but Eduardo was more than happy to come back and take care of them. Update! Its been two winters and part of the walkway has not…read moreheld up. When I let Eduardo know, he went back and forth with me via text for about 39 minutes saying I used salt on the concrete. That was it, he took no accountability, just that I used salt and ruined my own walkway I spent thousands on. He then offered to see it in person (which he should have just said in the first place) and told me over and over I used salt during the winter. Anyone who knows me knows that I wouldn't use salt and in fact have been using sand. He asked to see the bag, I brought it up and then he said, I was using salt. He then asked how many people live in the building (not important, the city sidewalk doesn't look like this, neither does the walkway in the back, which is decades old). It was really weird and he took absolutely no accountability for what might have happened, as I only stated the work was not aging well. He just kept saying he did a good job, etc and that I used salt. After all of that, he said he could fix it (sir, you should have led with that). The price he gave was high and ultimately I didn't think I should have to pay more for work that didn't really hold up after 2.5 years. So just know if you get concrete work and it looks bad after a few years, he'll blame you over and over before finally offering an expensive solution.
