I discovered General Wax earlier this year when I thought candle making would be a fun hobby. I brought a friend along to their North Hollywood location for what was advertised as an educational class. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like a class much at all but more like an activity. The 'instructor' claimed to sell her own candle creations, yet seemed surprisingly unknowledgeable. Our group was outspoken and asked lots of questions, but she was incredibly vague and nonchalant. When asked basic technical questions like how different fragrances react with specific waxes or how to choose the right wax for a project, she couldn't even provide clear answers. I really didn't learn much of anything at this paid class. (Fyi, I turned to YouTube!) The store itself is spacious and well organized, but be very careful with their pricing. I've found that many of their supplies are significantly marked up compared to local craft stores or Amazon. For example, I bought a digital scale here that turned out to be a non-functioning and non-reliable piece of trash. After some research, I realized they charged me three times more than better models available online. Thankfully, I was able to return it. Their fragrance selection and quality is mostly great and I do like their wax. The staff doesn't go out of their way to help but are approachable and friendly. What prompted this review today was a total lack of communication regarding their hours. I checked their website before leaving my house to ensure they were open. The only holiday closure banner on their website was for a holiday that happened months ago (labor day). After a 40-minute drive, I arrived to find the gates closed. I had to pull over and call, only to hear a recording stating they are closed for the next 10 days for holidays and inventory. It's incredibly irritating to waste that much time and gas because a business can't be bothered to update their website. Honestly, it shows that they don't really value their customers or their time.

i'm sad. i was so happy, but the job they did was sub-par. first they were really nice about…read moreredoing it, but then the woman who does that went out of town. i thought i would have to wait for her return for a fix, but then another woman in the store did them for me, but not nearly as well. she got defensive and said i'd have to wait a month for the first woman to return. i asked why and she wouldn't answer. nothing makes me more frustrated than being a good repeat customer and getting stone walled when asking why something is being handled a certian way. finally her boss stepped in and explained that as i wasn't happy with the work the second woman had done, she wasn't comfortable redoing it, and i needed to wait. that was all she had to say. instead she just stood there, stony saying, you have to wait, and when i said, but why? she'd say, you have to wait. it was infuriating. so maybe go to the bougie place that charges more. silver sky will eventually get it done cheaper, but at what cost?

I've driven past this shop for months now and it's been discussed at my knitting club so after finally having a new project on hands + reason to visit; I decided to drop on by! StitchStop conveniently has a small parking lot available around back on Moorpark so you won't have to wander the neighboring streets for parking. The pricing of their notions (zippers/thread/needles/hooks) overall is competitive and better than the (sadly) recently vacated nearby Joann's Fabrics also in Sherman Oaks. That said; their selection is limited, likely as the shop is still new and finding its footing + small store room. For example; I specifically dropped in for both circular knitting needles in a size I wanted a longer cm length in for the cardigan project I'm on + a brown zipper. While they had 2 lengths of circular needles for all sizes available; both weren't long so I couldn't pick up what I needed here. However, they had a ton of zippers in different sizes and colors! Yarns here include both acrylics and naturals (both 1 color and dyed). Fabrics are predominantly cotton in fun prints or fleece blanket type fabric, absolutely no spandex spotted, limited chiffon. There are some nicely priced vintage patterns available.

He's very hands-on and knows everything about the products he sells and will make recommendations if you ask. I buy from them mostly online but I also drop by in person when I'm in NoHo. As another reviewer mentioned, their brick-and-mortar location is more of a small warehouse/shipping fulfillment center with an office attached so you can't really browse. But if you check out the merch on their website or in their eBay store JETStools and you know what you want (or have a basic idea) you can stop by in person and pay cash etc. When I know I'm going to drop by in person, I often call ahead and they have everything ready for me when I get there which is super convenient. The owner is always happy to answer my product and technique questions and recently he sold me a mini hammer that is my new favorite tool. He'll tell you upfront which is cheapest, which is best, which is a good combination of both, and he always has very helpful suggestions. I've made dozens and dozens (and dozens) of purchases from them over the years and I've never been disappointed with the quality of their items or their service, nor have I ever found someone with better prices.
