I went to this place every week with my mother for many years till they closed. I miss the family that ran it and the shopping experience.

It is within walking distance, which is a plus, though I do watch the prices and go to Mariano's or Jewel when they offer more for less. EVERYONE at the meat/cheese counter is great, and friendly. They really do know their stuff, though at times, I wish they had a ticketed numbered system. It would prevent me from going off on some of the older Eastern Euro clientele when they try to butt in line. NOT happening! The cashiers are efficient, though there is a tall male one that is new to me. Feels like his name should be Draco. Would almost pass for AI, due to his height an personality, though AI can be programmed to be charming and efficient. He literally saw me put down items on the belt and looked like he was confused as to what his role was, then asked me if I wanted a bag for all my purchases, despite it being obvious that I had none with me. I had to get snippy, because, well, I had to get snippy. Oprah did mention them in one of her shows, so they got "trendy" afterwards, but as other reviewers have said, they do carry items that you would find more at a Treasure Island than a Jewel, Aldi, or Mariano's. They are good for that. Now, if they would only work on their AI cashiers and make them more personable, then I would give them a five star rating. Especially since peeps in the hood voted down Amazon from taking over and planting seeds on the corner of Western and Lawrence, to take over the grocery store market.

It's a pretty standard small grocery store, with a few things that may be hard to find elsewhere. They have some international brands, although the Mexican grocery store farther west on Lawrence (Lindo Michigan) is a better bet for Central American things. They sell some local brands, including freshly-roasted coffee from Brü Coffeeworks, also on Lawrence. Prices are a smidge higher than you might find elsewhere, but at least they're consistent and don't require you to download an app or join a frequent shopper club or whatever. I do wish they would stay open a little later. The staff are helpful, and they have a good selection of spices and seasonings. I wasn't able to find caraway seed elsewhere, for some reason, but when I asked a staff member if they had any, he immediately took me to the exact spot on the shelf where they had it in two different container sizes.

Upon checking out.. no cashiers were at a register. ONLY SELF CHECKOUT. A 70 year old or so women was also checking out. This poor woman could be your parents or an elderly person you know. The manager here wanted to save what $15 so another staff member could be stocking a shelf? Crazy. Absolutely insane. This store is pretty decent overall, but the levels of disrespect this shows for your own staff and your community is just unreal. Whoever staffed the store that night should be deeply ashamed of themselves. The stockholders are gonna be ok. Put a working staff member on registers at all times period. What if someone got injured? The self checkout here has a TINY spot to put your bag. Move the bag a bit and the scale freaks out. I can think of endless reasons for a cashier to be working at all times. Think of members of your community who need help if you run a FOOD STORE. Think of ways to improve your business rather than screwing customers. What about people who are neurodivergent and have disabilities? All to save like $100 a week. I bet they pull cashiers every night that last hour. What an F you to the people you sell to. TLDR: 9:30pm and NO cashier working a register. Elderly woman forced to use self checkout with a cart full of heavy items.

Their well-maintained produce section is always clean and stocked, their staff is really kind and considerate, and you can spend about an hour just looking at the jam-packed aisles. You might not find what you're looking for if you're shopping for some typical American basics, but spend a little extra time checking out the global cuisine. They have an impressive pepper selection, lots of great dairy choices from all over the world, an absolutely crazy selection of smoked fish and herring, lots of different kinds of meats and an amazing deli with insane deals on domestic, bulgarian, and greek feta as well as a killer olive selection. Ryes from local bakeries, so many specialty items and a really fun wall of Russian candies that are just beautiful to look at. They have expanded their meat counter and have an on-site butcher who's happy to cut your meat for you as you wait. Right now during Coronavirus I've noticed that they've been excellent at staying consistently restocked, keeping their hours, and staff has been nothing but courteous. It's truly a neighborhood grocery store and I'm fortunate to live in a diverse area filled with families and caring, considerate individuals.

The butcher YaYa is excellent and ground my chicken breast fresh and also packed it very nice so I didn't have to re-package it at home before freezing it. They have a great selection of spices and also several ethnic breads made fresh locally that you can't find at your regular grocery store. Locally owned by a family. That's enough of a reason to shop, but they also have pretty good prices. Big place to get lots. It's not just Indian stuff. Though there's certainly plenty of that. A lot from other countries. Middle Eastern particularly. Also it looked to be fresh. There's a pretty big produce section. Got some things that compared to other places were quite affordable. They have a lot of cheap specials. Fairly obvious this is a pretty international area. It's located on Devon at Artesian amongst the Indian markets and restaurants. This has plenty for meat eaters and vegetarians.

This is located just south of the Jewel-Osco in Andersonville, between Clark and Ashland on Catalpa. When I wandered around they had a variety of vendors. There were a few with prepared food, and I think at least one you could buy food for cooking later. There was a candle vendor, and obviously several vendors selling vegetables. I did finally sign up with the composting company that I had been considering. I didn't know anyone using it, as I'd liked to have used a referral code to give someone credit for the referral, but I am glad they were here for me to finish my registration. I'm hoping that as we get deeper into the season, there will be more to choose from. But the ramps I picked up were really good, and I'd be in heaven if I could find some strawberries at the market if I visit in early June.

The market is compact since it's only couple of blocks long. There are plenty of options for veggies and fruits, but organic and non-organic. The only item that I didn't find was corn. The red and black berries are delicious. The Bruni-Uusto cheese stand is incredible which you can taste before you buy a packet or two. It's great to have this market during the week to replenish your fruits and veggies that you have bought over the weekend. The evening hours is a plus. Looking to return.
