Best value on SPI. We were visiting town and wanted some fresh fish, saw the reviews on Yelp and decided to try Cevice Cevice for dinner. The food was so delicious with large portions of fresh fish and produce at a reasonable price that we ended up coming back again before we left. We got the Classic and the Islander, both were amazing, but my favorite was the Classic. The creamy jalapeño sauce was our favorite of the sauces. A bit late on my review, we actually were there on February 15, 2025. I was not able to decide what I wanted for my wife and I and our two friends, so I made the decision to purchase the classic and the Islander. From the outside the business looks a tad rundown. Went inside it also looks a little bit worn. BUT, then everything changes when you talk to the staff. They are extremely knowledgeable, with a degree of comfort and teaching new people about this wonderful thing called ceviche. The young lady who took care of me, did not rush anything at all, and was willing to explain every part of the process and all of the different nuances available from their menu. When I was finally able to make my decision, she crafted one of the most beautiful things I think I've ever seen. Everything was super fresh, where she even had to chop up a few different items fresh from the refrigerator so that it could be crisp and wonderful and my dish. I don't know when we will get back to South Padre Island again, but you can bet your lucky stars. I'll probably be in there about every other day. The food was fabulous and the staff was tremendous. I agree with a couple previous postings, take a little bit of time and invest in the aesthetic and the outside view and you'll probably be more busy than you could ever imagine. This place is a total tourist trap. If you're just looking for a fruit or veggie salad with some shrimp, it might seem like the go-to spot--but that's about it. The cleanliness here is seriously lacking. The prep surfaces looked like they hadn't been wiped down in ages--definitely not up to food safety standards. Cross-contamination seemed inevitable. In the 20 minutes I waited to order, I watched the girl behind the counter eat and drink without washing her hands once. Then a guy took out the trash while wearing gloves, came back in, swapped gloves without washing his hands, and immediately started prepping food. Everything about the space felt unsanitary. The surfaces were visibly dirty, and it was uncomfortably hot inside. The same guy who didn't wash his hands was sweating heavily and wiping his forehead while handling food--definitely not okay. Some serious management and food safety training are needed before people start getting sick. And if your idea of "fresh," as some other reviews suggest, includes pre-cut veggies from a bag, then you'll probably be fine. Unfortunately, my tomatoes were wilted and had that unpleasant "refrigerator" taste. Maybe this place used to be worth the hype, but like many spots that get too popular, the quality and flavor have clearly gone downhill. read more
