So good! I haven't heard about this dessert shop before, but I love the concept and all the desserts. There are other Asian dessert shops, but I'd say Cha-An is one of my favorites in the city. We ordered the parfait and matcha tiramisu, both of which were delicious. The tiramisu was surprisingly light and not very rich, and the parfait had so many delicious ingredients so every bite was a surprise. It seems like this dessert shop is a popular one, so seating can be hard. However, in my opinion, it's worth the wait. Came back to Cha-An for the first time in over 5 years last Friday. It's a small Japanese tea house located on the second floor. It's cozy and has really nice vibes for tea after a meal/date, and was basically full 30 mins after opening. There are a lot of different types of tea offered, I ended up ordering a white tea with notes of guava. They also give you a free refill of the tea as well. To be honest, the tea was not super fragrant or flavorful (even after we let it brew for a while) but it was still nice to sip on on a cold rainy day. I also got some mochi to share. The mochi balls on a stick were covered in a brown soy sauce glaze which I've never had before (I thought it was going to be more like brown sugar) which was kind of interesting. Everything was good but did feel kind of overpriced. I think my total came out to over $30 for the pot of tea and mochi. While beautifully served and presented, we were extremely disappointed in the food. The most tasteful was a savory rice selection. Cream puffs with match cream, again looked pretty, but lacked flavor. Other offerings included a square of white bread with cream and alice of strawberry, a mochi skewer, meringue cookie and butter cookie. My friend and I came on MLK Day around noon. The restaurant was fairly full at the time but we were able to be seated right away as soon as both of us arrived. After we sat down we had to wait a bit of time before we were able to flag someone down to take our order. The man later brought over our waters and utensils. For our food we decided to share two items: --CHA-AN SET: a gorgeous set up with lots of items to try out. The miso soup was delicious. The sampler tray of the unagi, smoked salmon and tuna tataki were all great but I have to say that the smoked salmon was my favorite. It really whet my appetite to try their smoked salmon toast because the dressing and salmon just worked so well with the lettuce. The only item I wasn't 100% thrilled about was the fried glutaneous dough/tofu. There was not too much flavor to it. Additionally, all of the items were warm and not hot. I would have appreciated if the temperature of the items was higher. --UNAGI KABAYA: wonderful flavor to the unagi, I just wish there was more fish - there was only five small pieces. Everything else with the dish was delicious though! All in all, a calming restaurant serving up some yummy foods with just a few hiccups. When the waitress came to get our order they said that it had to be one order per person. So we decided to get a mocha and a small ice cream. The order took a while to come and the food ended up being way to sweet. The white balls that came with the mochi tasted like soy sauce and the mochi fillings tasted very artificial. The Peach White Tea ($12), as encouraged by the worker, was SOOO fragrant. Described as mild, fruity, and sweet, the tea was like smelling candy but tasting hot floral water. They allowed us 1 free refill with it. If it were to me, I wish I brought in a hot kettle or took the leaves with me home! The Mochi Mochi had two types of mochi served with matcha ice cream, red bean, and some type of heavy flavored drizzle, that I did not quite like. The mochi was definitely the star of the show though, and I LOVED how chewy and fresh tasting they were. This was such a great find we came across walking around the unofficial little Tokyo area - it is a small space located on the upper floor level of a shophouse, and if you sit at the counter (like we did), you have a full view of the area where they are brewing the tea. We got the $15 hot matcha drink to try it - it was incredibly rich, with that traditional bitter aftertaste taste. I also got an iced Sakura tea because it sounded kind of refreshing and it was pretty hot outside - it was definitely tamer but still tasty with a little floral aftertaste to it. The workers are super nice. And the desserts my god looks so beautiful. I don't think my photos do it justice, but you really gotta see it in person. We had this special type of Japanese raindrop cake (I think called mizu shingen), kinako mochi (which is a softer more jelly ish mochi), and this matcha shaved ice. All of them felt really special and tasted great. The matcha on the shaved ice (and that was also drizzled over the mochi) was insanely strong. Some of the best matcha I've tasted and the mochi was everything I imagined. Not sure if I'd get the raindrop cake again but it looked so cool I'm really glad I got it at least once. The HJ Kakigori is definitely a shareable item, so just keep that in mind lol because we were shocked, expecting that it wasn't going to be as big. It's probably good for 2-4 people.
