I was unimpressed for a couple of reasons. The space is super tiny, in particular, it is very narrow. Upon entering you order and then head to the back but then to get out of the store is hard because you have to get past those ordering. I had been looking forward to trying Sorate after seeing it all over social media and finally got to stop by the SoHo location. This is a small tea shop located on Sullivan street. They have a few seats along the bar inside and a bench outside. Both employees were very kind. One of them took my order and explained some of the items on the menu, and the other prepared the drinks. Honestly a bit disappointed because I've been so excited to try the matcha at sorate. They had a seasonal special called the Sakura matcha latte which was cherry blossom flavored. Was a bit disappointed with the presentation of this one because we thought we would be able to see a pink cold foam as advertised. But as you can see in the pictures, all the lattes looked the same. Taste wise, this was floral and a bit sweet. The floral taste overpowered the matcha and it really tasted more like a rose milk drink. Would give that drink a 4/10. I got the iced matcha with whole milk and was genuinely so sad. It tasted creamy but barely of matcha. I prefer stronger lattes so this was almost like drinking plain milk. Would give it a 3.5/10. Sadly disappointed. I heard so many good things about this place but when I went my experience was nothing like what I heard about. The person making matcha didn't smile at all the whole time and looked unhappy to be there. It's very small and cramped in the store and we watched him make our drinks and he didn't even sift the matcha! We paid so much for high quality matcha and then had the most grainy, watery, not good tasting drinks. We also got a hojicha which had the same problem and tasted like it had absolutely 0 sweetener which was undrinkable. Should have probably asked for more sweetener to be added but it wouldn't have solved the graininess or watery taste. We couldn't take more than a couple sips of our three drinks without tossing it. I had a wonderful experience at Sorate! There was a seat available at the bar so I was able to sit in for an hour or so. I ordered a round of the petit cookies and the iced matcha latte. I had to the option to add honey or agave and chose agave. The matcha was not bitter at all, smooth, had the smallest amount of sweetness and was such a neat experience. This is how matcha should taste like. Thank goodness for the cold because I found my absolute fav tea after being here. I ordered a genmaicha tea (hot) also with agave. It was INCREDIBLE. The aroma is nutty and at first sniff it may not be everyone's cup of tea. But man when I tell you it was the richest green tea in the best way possible. I wanted to walk out with a few grams to make at home. You're able to get 3 rounds of the tea in total which is nice given the price. I enjoyed the matcha latte (tried the Soku), and would come back for their high quality matcha. I like how they use the traditional methods to make it (the same way as one does for a Japanese tea ceremony). I asked the staff the difference between the Soku and the Hekisho matcha; Soku is more creamy and the Hekisho is more earthy. The staff member who took my order was pleasant. There were just so many questions to ask about the order: which type of matcha (of the 3 on the menu), hot or iced, type of milk, do we want sweetener? if so what type? Totally normal to ask ofc, but there were just so many questions and didn't realize those were customizable, and I felt anxious like I was holding up the line from all the questions. Maybe if they made that more clear on the menu or had a guide at the counter leading up to ordering... My friend asked if we were able to sit at the bar, but the staff said we had to have asked to dine-in beforehand (they serve in a non-disposable cup if so), and if you have the matcha made in a disposable cup you cannot sit at their bar. Finally got to check out this vibey matcha spot that recently opened their second location so sounds like they're seeing a lot of success! It makes sense, as I do think they're crafting some of the best cups of matcha in the city (high quality, thoughtfully made cups, that is) and not your generic oversweetened American matcha equivalent. The matcha here leaned very earthy, and even for me, I found myself having to add just a bit of sweetener and then it was perfect and one of my favorite cups in my quest to find the best matcha available. The space is obviously beaaautifully decorated, and you feel like you could stay in there all day. It's dimly lit, cozy, though small, and so you will maybe find it hard to post up there. Also, the constant flow of customers means it'll be a busy place with not a lot of personal space. That being said, I loved it here, and they also sell wagashi, which comes out BEAUTIFULLY and tastes extremely authentic, and you can tell was made with care. They were yummy too, and the perfect addition to your matcha experience. They aren't very sweet, though, so if you're not used to wagashi, don't expect anything too sugary or even mochi-like. I don't think words can describe how flabbergasted I was of how bad the service was at this "higher end" matcha place. I understand having a bad day as a food service worker, as I was once in that world myself. Yet, I was still extremely shocked by my experience here. As we were waiting for our drinks, two different parties in front of us had expressed that they wanted the larger size as they were making their drinks. The only thing that saved this experience was the little matcha tiramisu which wasn't too sweet and enjoyable.
