A Lee Kum Kee (李錦記) ice cream + thai tea collab has to be one of the wildest collabs I've seen lol. As a Hongkonger, their sauces have always been a staple in my kitchen. So when I saw @nuarnyc turning soy sauce and oyster sauce into desserts and drinks, I had to see what it was all about. I won't lie, these umami flavors are definitely a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing, but if you're a die-hard Lee Kum Kee fan like I am, it's fun to try! ＊Umami Treat Ice Cream $8.5 I use 蠔油 (oyster sauce) almost every day, but I never thought it'd work in ice cream! It added an umami depth that made the creamy ice cream taste even richer. Imagine miso caramel or soy caramel ice cream but even more umami. Once it started getting a little too savory, the sweet red bean and waffle cone balanced everything out. ＊Umami Soy Sauce Thai Tea $7.5 Thai tea topped with a milk foam infused with 頭抽 (first draw soy sauce). They used the reduced sodium version, so it added a subtle umami flavor without tasting salty. I actually loved this one because I usually find thai iced tea a little too sweet, but the savory milk foam complemented it well. It tasted just like salted cheese foam (but again, more umami). ＊Open Sesame Thai Tea $8.5 I literally just bought this 芝麻醬 (sesame paste) to make cold appetizers for the summer, so I wasn't expecting to see it in a thai tea. I came into Naur twice for the mini print vending machine. Both times, it was pretty hot outside and inside was absolutely boiling. I think it was hotter inside than it was outside. You can exchange cash for quarters - but only if you have cash on hand. Both times they were great about this. Now onto the drinks. I think the drinks were pretty expensive and just OK. The Thai Iced Tea without milk was fine. I thought it was overly sweet. Somehow it was sweeter than the one with condensed milk. The Thai Iced Tea Lemonade Soda was not good at all. Didn't know about this place until I saw influencers post about the Lee Kum Kee collab, and I came just to try it. I'm not the type of person who adds soy sauce or oyster sauce to everything, but I'm totally the type to have a lick of them by itself without any ingredients. I got the umami soy sauce thai tea and umami treat ice cream. Both were disappointing. I came here to taste those sauces and I couldn't. The ice cream looked partially melted when it came out. I can't taste the oyster sauce whether it's the sweetness, umami, or juiciness. I could get a bit of savoriness but I couldn't tell it's oyster if you didn't tell me. It was too sweet but not like seafood sweetness. In fact my tongue got a bit numb from eating it. Don't tell me maybe I'm not used to umami. I eat these sauces all the time. The red bean paste wasn't too sweet but also lacked any substantial flavor. At least I could use it to offset the sweet ice cream. My favorite part of this ice cream was the crunchy coconut roll. Are they the same ones from Costco (LOL idk I've seen it before but never ate it)? Anyways I was disappointed. I wish they used the oyster sauce as a drizzle or mixed in like a fudge. The Thai tea was slightly better in terms of being less offensive, but I still wouldn't get it again. The Thai tea itself was too weak. Literally my neighborhood Malaysian restaurant who sells it for $5 does a better job. They added soy sauce to the cold foam on top. I personally don't like cold foam in general, so it's self-inflicted disappointment by having this. I don't get how people drink cold foam with a straw, because I literally had to open the lid and use my ice cream spork to mix it in. I tasted the foam by itself and indeed could taste the soy sauce. It was faint but it at least it was identifiable. Naturally, after mixing in the cold foam and having ice melt, I couldn't taste the soy sauce again. I was honestly looking for them to add a dash (or more) of soy sauce in the thai tea which could really help offset the sweetness. I guess it wouldn't matter if the tea itself isn't strong enough. The layout of the store is weird where it's a long thin rectangle. It can get messy between people waiting to order vs pickup. They benefit from having public seats just outside the store. I came here to try their summer special Lee Kum Kee series and was sadly disappointed. Their Umami Soy Sauce Thai Tea did not taste umami at all. It just tasted like a regular Thai tea, albeit not too sweet which I liked. The Umami Treat Ice Cream was savory, kinda like a salted vanilla caramel, but I could not taste the oyster sauce. I know it's meant to just have a touch of oyster sauce to bring out the umami flavor but I couldn't even taste a hint of it. The place is really cute and their other items look appetizing. I would have loved to try their Kopi Latte and Mango Sticky Rice Smoothie, but after this disappointing collab, I feel like this is just another spot thats overhyped on IG and TikTok. Came in on a Saturday because I saw videos that they are doing a collab with Lee Kum Kee and the new collab items look intriguing! Who would have thought to put oyster sauce in an ice cream or put sesame oil in a drink! They have a spacious outdoor seating however we choose not to sit outside due to the hot weather. We sat indoors by the bar seats. When we came in, the store was already filled with people enjoying food. And some of the people were waiting for their order by the register. The interior store layout is like a rectangle. They have small cards on old school vending machines for sale. There were six designs to choose from. We waited for a bit for our umami treat ice cream with lee kum kee's premium oyster sauce. It was an interesting combination. The item has red bean paste and coconut wafers. Came for the Pandan Wafer, but they were sold out! It was probably my fault for showing up 40 min before closing, but I had hoped for a miracle. Sigh. Next time. The staff was friendly, and the place inside, while small, seems like a nice place to work, with a warm and comforting atmosphere. I went with the Signature Blend Thai Tea Latte, available hot or iced, with the usual coffee/tea sizes: 8 to 12 oz for hot and 12 to 16 oz for the large. I went with iced, and it was $7 or $7.50 depending on size, and I went with the latter. It was very tasty, with the tea flavor shining through, unlike most variants. It wasn't overly sweet from the various milks, with enough spices to make it distinctly the Thai version of this drink. For the same price point, you can also order it hot, without milk, or mixed with lemonade, along with an oat option for an extra dollar. This is a tasty little specialty shop. The service situation here is odd, and additionally they told me they weren't serving the wafers but didn't tell me why. It was so early I can't imagine they were sold out but who knows. Cute shop walking distance from Madison Square Park and Herald Square. It is located right next to a small alley with benches outside. The inside is a long, narrow walkway with two tables and four chairs facing the park. People seem to grab and go or if they do sit down it's for a quick bite. The Thai tea latte comes in regular whole milk or oat milk for an extra dollar. The drink was milky and strong at the same time. It's not as sweet as other Thai iced tea. I saw a lady ask for more condensed milk in her drink. My boyfriend enjoyed the Thai tea latte though! The Thai tea ice-cream was my favorite out of the three items. It has strong Thai tea flavor with the sweetness of Ice-Cream, but it was not overly sweet to the point I cannot handle. It was honestly perfect. The kaya toast comes in pandan or Thai tea flavor. Ive always had kaya in it's original flavor or pandan flavor at home, so I decided to go for the thai tea. I like the flavor but I did not liked the toast. I liked the Thai tea latte hot with the $1 toasted marshmallows over it. The texture of the marshmallows is actually a perfect bed of fluff that slowly melts over the Thai tea. The toast was okay--I think it would have been better if it were actually fully toasted or some sugar caramelized the outside of it to add another layer of flavor. I stopped by Nuar before dinner in the area to grab a Thai Tea. You order at the register and they'll call your name when your order is ready. Service was super friendly and quick. It was delicious and although it is sweetened, I can still taste the hints of thai tea in the flavoring. As a cafe dedicated to thai tea, I had concerns how diverse their menu could get but they get really creative with their rotating and special offerings, including a pandan cream top thai tea which was really delicious, though I will say the pandan overpowers the thai tea when it's all integrated, so I would personaly keep the layers mildly mixed - mix until it reaches your desired balance of thai tea and pandan. The thai tea quality is also quite good compared to an ordinary thai tea. I wanted to get the kaya toast, but was alone, so I opted for the less heavy mango ice cream with butterfly pea sticky rice which was yummmmmmmhyyyy! The mango puree adds that nice touch of sweetness that the rest of this not-too-sweet dish benefits from, and toasted nuts on top adds a nice crunch. Sticky rice cooked perfectly and chewy.
