What they are known for are the desserts and tea, especially on a late night. This small hidden away restaurant is located upstairs and can require a wait on a Friday or weekend night. With so many delicious Japanese teas, there is a tea for everyone's palate. The hot teas are served in teapots made for either one person or two. The iced teas are served in glasses for individuals. The signature matcha milk teas are a must if you love matcha milk. All the desserts are great, especially the black sesame brulee and signature zenzai! With the different textures layered in the tiny glass container, you will be just fine with one dessert. Chill atmosphere! Having been to Tokyo and frequently visit a mochi pastry place in Toronto, I found everything on the menu overpriced and the food quality disappointing. I bookmarked this teahouse because Im a big fan of mochi and Japanese sweets. We ordered the highly anticipated jewelry box but half the items turned out to be stale. We ordered the hojicha mochi but they ran out of hojicha ice cream...each hot matcha cost a whooping US$8. We ordered: - Hojicha Anmitsu - Homemade mochi - Matcha Tiramisu (my order) I'll preface this review by saying that I had pretty high expectations for this place based on its price and presentation. The matcha tiramisu was certainly very interesting on three aspects: it had decent quality green tea powder all throughout, had red bean fillings, and contained some sort of a liqueur at the bottom. Unfortunately, the execution of this dish did not live up to its innovative concept. These different aspects did not feel harmonious at all, with the bitter aftertaste of the green tea powder being exacerbated, not balanced, by the noticeable aftertaste of the alcohol absorbed in the bottom layer. As for the other dishes, I got to taste a bite of them and liked them, but for the dish that I ordered, my experience was just not very great. Lastly, I will note that we visited here at around 7PM on a Saturday, and the next door bar was playing music so loudly that we could feel the vibration of the bass throughout the place. This is a small romantic tea house perfect for a date. Dessert sizes are small and slightly expensive. I liked the black sesame creme brulee the most. There is a scoop of black sesame ice cream, a black sesame water and on the bottom a black sesame creme brulee. Flavor of black sesame was really nice. Matcha chiffon cake was good. Ugh amazing place. I went here pre-COVID so this review is overdue. It has an intimate vibe to the place - definitely a good place to bring a date for a calm, cozy night out on a chilly night. I ordered the Jewelry Box (~$30) for two, which differs based on the Chef's choice for the day. It's super cute, delicate, and has a variety of small desserts. It is small though - the portions are light. The chef gave us a bunch of biscuits/cookies, so I wouldn't say it was anything that special aside from the presentation of the dessert. Because the entire place is rather small, the line can be extremely long during the evenings or on the weekends. I haven't been here for their savory foods, but I've always enjoyed their simple yet delicious Japanese desserts. There isn't necessary a huge list of desserts to choose from, but every time I always struggle with what to order, especially since I personally love matcha and other traditional Japanese flavors. The seasonal parfaits are my usual go-to, but I've also enjoyed their black sesame creme brulee, the mochi mochi, and their different flavors of ice cream scoops. All of which are fantastic! I came in with some friends to the non-sit down side of Cha-An and absolutely loved it. We came right before closing and I ordered the (last) mochi cookie, an iced hojicha latte, a hojicha soft serve, and black sesame mochi. The mochi cookie seems to have been the most well known pastry and it was delicious - it was not too sweet and had the perfect blend of chewiness from the mochi and pastry aspect of the cookie. The hojicha latte and black sesame mochi were good, but I think the hojicha soft serve ice cream shined the most. I absolutely love hojicha so I would recommend others to try the soft serve over the latte if you plan on only getting one. I would definitely come back in the future to get my favorites as well as try other flavors of mochi there i.e. the yuzu or strawberry ichigo. read more

Love the side dishes. The dessert included in my set is ok. Just puff pastry with cream... a sandwich shaped puff pastry. I had no room for more dessert, and I was bummed. They have very detailed descriptions of the tea flavors. Very accurate descriptions so make sure you read it carefully before making a decision. The layout felt a bit crowded, but it lived up to being a small cute place to dine. What we ordered: - Matcha Kakigori - Sakura Drop - Matcha-Tini It was very clear that their menu was heavily influenced by using matcha as a base ingredient. I was instantly drawn to so many items on this menu but we decided to only go with three things. When the matcha kakigori arrived, I expected it to be a little bigger for the price. However, as I went in for my first bite, I was speechless. I made sure to include a mochi, red bean, green tea ice cream and matcha shaved ice, which made this first bite magical as the ingredients all joined together beautifully. The only downside is that there wasn't a lot of mochi and red bean so the dish just included a ton of shaved ice at the end with no toppings to complement. For the Sakura Drop, they include a brown sugar syrup that you drizzle over the Sakura flower jelly. This desert was definitely more for pleasing the eye than to be something that tastes amazing. The Matcha-Tini has the products to be a great cocktail, but slightly missed the bar for our group. Overall, Cha-an has the foundation to make some amazing desserts and drinks, but in this visit I was left wanting more from our selection. I had a great time and the service staff was great, and I'm hoping that they continue to innovate and curate some tasty matcha desserts! Came here with a few friends who stated this was the best matcha in the city and I agree! The stairs to get up are tight, especially if there is a wait. But, the overall space is really nice and makes you feel like you're outside of the city. We got the deluxe iced matcha and a few desserts. All were excellent. Be prepare to wait at least half an hour. I came here a couple of times but was discouraged due to the long wait time. (It was over an hour wait). The good thing is that you do not have to wait at the place. You can put your name and number down and they text you 10 minutes before the table is ready. It is not ideal to wait here because the waiting area is small and a lot of people come and go. The stairway is also small and can just fit two people standing next to each other. The inside is also small. There is not a lot of seating. It is not ideal for parties more than 4. Service was slow. We sat there for over 10 mins and the staff did not take our order. We waited another 15 mins before we got the check. Not sure if it was because our table was together with the party next to us and they thought we were the same party. We ordered the black sesame creme brûlée and the green tea parfait. Creme brûlée is really good. It was creamy and rich. But for the price I wish the portion was bigger. The green tea parfait was okay. It was too much going on and the flavors doesn't really blend that well. You have to eat most of the top portion before you can get to the jelly below. When we went in at 2:25 it was already packed with people and luckily we were able to get the last seat that was available. Finally, one weekend I got to try it! Five of us waited 50 minutes to be seated. The tiny dessert/ restaurant is located on the 2nd floor, up a narrow flight of stairs. The area is dimmed and demurred. Most people having quiet conversations, and enjoying their drinks and desserts. We each got a dessert- which was way too many desserts. Some of the desserts were aesthetically pleasing but didn't taste great. Other desserts were tasty but not beautiful. We were sugar overloaded by the time we were done. We shared: Jewelry box- tiny lacquered box filled with miniature desserts. This was really hard to share. It was so adorable though! I loved the sakura raindrop cake (jelly). There was a blossoming sakura inside the raindrop. 3 shortbread cookies in the Jewelry Box- one was green tea, the other black sesame. Matcha truffle. It looked cute. Didn't get to try. Strawberry cake in the Jewelry Box- this was ok. It was a little dry. This was our group's least favorite. Green tea parfait- this was the best tasting dessert. There was red bean, soft fresh mochi, cornflakes, green tea ice cream. There was so many textures and flavors! I wish this was my dessert. Strawberry shaved ice- the cream and strawberries were good. Stopped by on a Friday evening for dessert after dinner at sobaya across the street (so good!). Intimate space with limited seating, but its this small space concept that also makes the visit special - you sort of feel like you're doing something right in life when you've made your way through the line up that narrow stairway and are allowed entry into this sacred space of decadent sweets and traditional tea. The two of us had to exert a certain level of restraint in just ordering three desserts and not the whole menu. We got the Cha an original special Sakura parfait, matcha tiramisu, and the black sesame creme brûlée. The Sakura parfait was stunningly beautiful in presentation. Kind of wished the glass was wider so that when getting bites we could gather all the layers together, but delicious nonetheless. That matcha tiramisu tho, was out of this world in its complexity and use of traditional East Asian flavors and texture to arrive at a "tiramisu." You can't really compare it to an Italian tiramisu - it's in a category of it's own, and eating it feels like winning the prize after you've beaten a hidden level mega boss. Last but not least, the humble yet elegant sesame crème brûlée completely blew my taste buds out of this universe - whisps of childhood flavors of sesame paste soup and other sesame flavored Asian desserts were pulled out from the depths of memory to add texture and create new memories. Super cute dessert place! The interior is literally the cutest thing I have ever seen, like there are actual little huts and teahouses within the space where you can sit semiprivately! Cute spot to hit up for dessert, though they can get quite crowded. For the two of us, on a Sunday afternoon, it was about a fifteen minute wait, and we probably got lucky because it looked like there was more of a rush coming in after us. Came for the artisanal desserts, as much a sugar overload as a piece of art, and the teahouse didn't disappoint. First things first: the seasonal special, the Tsukimi Parfait, caught our eye, and we had to order it. It has pu-erh tea jelly, mitarashi mochi, Japanese pear, crunchy cereal (think: frosted cornflakes), baked Japanese sweet potato, Yaki-mo maple ice cream, and monaka, Japanese wafer. When I saw it, I was imagining an Asian version of one of those crazy shakes, though decidedly less fluid. I tried to get a spoonful with everything, because the combined flavor is truly unique. The pu-erh tea jelly, especially, was a delight, because I usually don't see that kind of flavor and texture in a mixed dessert. I wasn't into the wafer, which tasted quite dry and bland, and thought the sweet potato was interesting but unnecessary. Loved the ice cream with the jelly, mochi, and pear combo, topped with sweet flakes. We also got the mochi mochi, which had warabimochi, shiratamamochi surrounding a scoop of hojicha ice cream. I really liked the flavor of the ice cream and the texture of the mochi. The hojicha flavor better suited me than the maple ice cream flavor, and I almost wanted a mix of the two desserts, with the hojicha substituted into the parfait. Because it was so busy, they capped each table to an hour, though that was plenty of time for us. We enjoyed our time there: desserts are pricey, but you're partially paying for the presentation. Their matcha is pricier than other places, but easily worth it--the quantity of matcha is more generous than most and quality is superior. It's a splurge, but a worth it and delicious splurge. The desserts are pretty much all good, but the standouts to me always are their parfaits and summer-seasonal shaved ices, which are truly a joy each and every time. The only dessert I do not recommend is the "homemade mochi" listed on the menu (which is filled with whipped cream), but other mochi dishes, like their "mochi mochi," are really good. I would also not recommend their savory dishes--the lunch set feels somewhat overpriced, and their savory toasts aren't that good, in my opinion.
