update: you can get a 1/2 serving of the tom soups (as i like to call them)! it's not on the menu, but if you ask real nice, they'll do it. also- tonight i tried the fresh rolls with shrimp. the peanut sauce was excellent. the rolls were good, but rolled more like a sushi hand-roll. my friend got the sausage ones and they were rolled normally, so i'm not sure what's up with that. FYI- the shrimp they use are BIG!! in all the dishes (soup, rolls, pad-thai), were these jumbo, pink, perfectly cooked delights. i also tried the rad narh. the sauce was a little on the thick side, but it was so full of flavor, i wanted to lick the plate. my dining partners agreed that the pad thai was as good as i had promised. i was also told the pad see ew was very good. can't wait to start taking all of my other friends here! read more

if i crave thai (which is way too often) i instantly think of Cha Ba Thai. that being said, i refuse to dine in. i will only take go-go because their food is oh-so good, but their service is oh soooo shitty. seriously, it doesn't hurt to greet me HI and tell me you'll be right with me. a few times i went, they were really busy, but no one even acknowledged me as i waited forever at the front door. they slam your dishes on the table without even saying what it is and they never smile. sheesh. funny thing is i noticed they were way nicer to all the caucausian people in the resturant. Great Beef Salad, #19 on their Menu! I went here w/my co-workers for lunch & I've been here many times, but i keep forgetting to write a review for this place. I normally order the same thing, but it hasn't gotten old for me because i probably only go here every 3-4 months. I get their beef salad, curry chicken, pad thai, tom yum soup and pad se ew and each time it always taste delicious! I've had better at my friend's house, but for it being at a restaurant its pretty good. The only reason i didn't put a 5-star is because it doesn't taste very homemade or authentic. I don't think they use bo dac sauce, but substitute it for an ingredient that doesn't stink to high heavens! Their substitute is good & i can understand that they don't want to scare the customers away. Another gripe i have is their lunch menu price is either the same price as their dinner entree or just a few cents off...not a great lunch deal. I dined with my family and was surprised that it was not as good as I had experienced other times. One previous lunch last month the food was served barely warm which was a surprise, so I assumed it was just an off afternoon which is why I suggested dining here again. We tried three different dishes and again they were not very hot in temperature. The serving size was small compared to my favorite local Thai restaurant and just mediocre. Disappointing since I've been coming here for almost 15 years. I'm sad to say I probably won't return. read more

Went for my sisters birthday (back in February)... it used to be her favorite restaurant. We ordered tofu spring rolls, and everyone got an entrée. My sister order something that was described as having rice noodles, beef, and fresh vegetables... When it arrived it was almost as described... except the only "fresh vegetables" were mushrooms... tons and tons of mushrooms... My sister hates mushrooms. We felt bad, but as it wasn't described correctly on the menu we asked to send it back. They were more than accommodating and offered to make a new dish with no mushrooms. The new dish came... with mushrooms. At this point we have been waiting over 35mins for her food... and our food is now cold, as we waited for her to be served. They apologized again, and didn't charge us for her meal... however she didn't get to eat her birthday dinner, and the food we were served was not great. The server was great for the first half of our meal... but after the second mis-made dish arrived we had a really hard time getting their attention, when we finally did we asked for boxes to-go and that took nearly 10mins to get them. Then we had to wait another 10mins for our check. I might be more understanding if it had been really busy, but it wasn't. Too bad... but this is no longer our go-to Thai restaurant. read more

I feel I have to write this review. I am or used to be a big fan of Cha Ba Thai. I think they're food is extremely flavorful. And, it still is. So, this review is more about the steady decline in service I have noticed in the last year. I will add that this last visit was a packed house and only 2 servers. That should be somewhat predictable on a Thursday evening. Service was inattentive just the opposite can be annoying as well) for a table of 5. We asked for items that we never received. I have noticed a decline in service but the taste of their food never disappoints. You can decide which is more important. read more

Live in the neighborhood and have come here often. It used to be really good but the last three times I've been here the service has been horrible. The foods flavor is bland now and it used to be so so good. I brought people here about a month ago and me and my friend's food came with a normal wait, but our third guest's food never came. I kept asking because we had a play to go to and we allowed 1 1/2 hours for dinner but we were totally done eating and then they brought out the third plate. I told them to just take it back as we were leaving and they argued with me about taking it off the bill (they wanted me to take it to go) the whole experience was unbelievable. So my sister and i went in for lunch with our kids ages 1, 10 & 2 seven year olds. we ordered drunken noodles which we both thought was a bit burnt! You could taste the burnt DRY noodles so I politely asked them if it would be possible if they would make a new one. She was very nice and took it back. Check came. They charged me the drunken noodles which was fine I didn't expect them to take it off the tab since they brought us a new one but what had me was they charged us a 20%gratuity! This is probably my favorite Thai restaurant in Portland, along with Lemongrass. Chaba Thai, however, is not as pricey as Lemongrass, and the Pad Thai is the best we have ever had...slightly sweet, slightly tangy, and not overwhelming on the peanut sauce. It doesn't leave you with that greasy, beyond-full feeling. The Emerald dish is also delicious, which is lighter fare: spinach, broccoli and tofu with a side of peanut sauce. The only reason I don't give five stars is because the service is slightly on the slower side, but they are very polite and smiley! When i see this i always assume the best, and when it was time to eat it was awesome! I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because the service could be a little better. I've been going here for over 10 years...I only order one dish - tofu pad thai, this woman knows what she likes and gets it! Best pad thai in town by far - and I KNOW my pad thai. Their sauce is a perfect balance between sweet and savory. I've brought all my family and friends here as well! They have changed their recipe in the past year - added cabbage, to mimic what they do on Alberta I guess? Anyway, I just order it without the cabbage since that changes the flavor for me. The pad thai on Sandy is much better than the pad thai they serve on Alberta - different sauce? I dunno, but there's definitely a difference. Went out to dinner with a couple friends after work a few weeks ago, one of them was craving Thai food and wanted to go to Cha Ba Thai. I have been a couple times in the past and have not been impressed, but it has been a long time so I was willing to give it another try. Right off the bat, all the servers were extremely kind and there wasn't a wait which is always ideal. We shared the fish cakes as an appetizer and I was blown away at how the addition of basil changed the profile of the dish from what I am used to. I ordered the Roasted Duck in Red Curry Sauce--eggplant, bamboo shoots, tomatoes, pineapple, bell peppers, basil leaves, grapes, tropical fruit, and roasted duck. This dish is similar to one I really love at another Thai restaurant in town but bigger portion and less expensive. The lychee and roasted duck combination is addictive. I am going to have to attempt to make it at home, but if I get lazy then I'll have remember to come back here and get some take-out. read more

What is it with Thai restaurants? If I show up 15 minutes before their closing time I'm told the restaurant is closed, not serving anymore! Any other kind of restaurant serves up to the time they close. Cha Ba Thai is one of those restaurants that say they're closed when the sign says it's still open for 15-20 minutes. Maybe they should change their sign, open til 9:00 pm, stop serving at 8:30 pm! The food is good and I would have given a higher rating except for the service. I have been there numerous times and the servers are rude and short. I haven't been to the one on Alberta and maybe the service is better there, but the one on Sandy Blvd has some unpleasant servers. read more
