This place has become my go-to spot for Indian comfort food this year. They've got a huge variety from snacks to full meals, and in my experience, everything's been consistently good. I usually go for the dahi papdi chaat when I want something cold and refreshing or the chaat samosa if I'm craving something warm. The house thali is amazing with a lot of variety when I want more of a meal. The place is simple, clean, cafeteria-style setup. It's nothing fancy, but the food's worth it. Service is quick. Terrible experience at Chaat House in Sunnyvale. We ordered the chaat special (3 chaats) over the phone, and the person taking the order was rude and dismissive the whole time. When we got there, they only gave us 2 chaats instead of the special we ordered, and we had to get them to fix it. We specifically asked for no sev, but 2 chaats came with sev anyway. One came back completely untouched, and when we pointed it out, the employee literally said, "So what?" For the other, they claimed they made a fresh one, but it was obvious they had just scraped the sev off the top since there was still a bunch left at the bottom. They also gave us only 5 rotis in a pack that was supposed to have 10. When we called afterward to complain, they pretended not to hear us, basically said "too bad," and hung up. Terrible customer service and incredibly disrespectful. Won't be back. read more

We have been going to Chaat house for over 20 years and have seen some management changes but their recent management and cooking staff is phenomenal. This has become our go to place whenever we crave home cooked food. We come here atleast once a week :) Love their thalis, paratha, saag, chaat and chhas! The staff, especially Kiran is very respectful and the service is quick and amazing. We tried their on site catering for Diwali and it was a huge hit - ever since, we have recommended them to several of our friends and everyone loved their food! This place is okay. At one stage, I went once a week for a few weeks straight to get their house thali because of the variety they served, but I don't go much now. I particularly went on Thursday because they serve both aloo gobi and Bhindi (okra), both of which I tend to like. So that's the only day I might go on the odd occasion. I don't think they serve amazing food, some of the dishes are good (like the Bhindi) and others are decent (like the aloo gobi). But their other sabjis are just okay. You get a kadhi, I always replace it with channa masala or saag, both of which are okay, I am not sure if it is super fresh or not. You also get one type of dal usually which tastes good. Some days you get one of the paneer curries, they taste similar mostly, and maybe a single piece of paneer. 2 phulkas(thin wheat bread), one cup of rice, that can be replaced with a phulka if you prefer. A bowl of yogurt/curd, and a papad. It is pretty filling. You can also get chai or buttermilk on the side. I like their chai. 3 stars for the food. I also tried their dum aloo once and it was not authentic at all and not spiced right. Their parathas are good though and very filling. Simple ambiance, quick service. They are busy most of the time. The Thali I feel is not great value for money now, especially when you takeout because the portions are lesser in their to go box. They also sometimes close earlier than their listed timings. read more

Terrible food. All items in the thali were too salty, paneer was extremely hard and tasted like rubber. The lassi and curd were extremely sour and tasted bad. Ambience was a let down as the AC wasn't working on an extremely hot day lunch time. The drinks in the fridge were also not cold and looked like the refrigerator wasn't working either. My go-to for South Indian! Prices are very fair, ambiance and service is what you would expect for a hole in the wall. The food is amazing every time- I get the house thali which comes with a free drink (I get the chai) and pani poori. Such a great place to gather! Eating Chaat House feels like eating a home cooked meal. The food comes out fast and pipping hot and it never disappoints. With a bigger group it's nice to order a bunch of dishes and do family style but the House Thali is a great option for when you're eating alone. Chaat House offers vegetarian North Indian cuisine. My friend visits this place often but always orders the same thing - Thali. I asked what else should I try? She suggested everything here is very homelike, the salt might be on lower end but that can always be added from top. So I ordered a thali too, following the queue. The thali contains a bowl of rice, 2 roti, kadhi, dal, 2 veg curries (today they served Saag and Aloo Baigan), curd, papad, onions. It comes with either Buttermilk (chaas) or tea. It's quite a meal and they also accommodate minor changes to it. My friend asked for extra roti instead of rice and they were ok doing it. The kadhi was delicious, proper Punjabi taste with onion pakodas in it. The aloo baigan was also very nice. The daal tasted ok whereas the saag was just fine. The roti reminded me of home or the roti in Langar. There were no floating oil on any of the curry and hence even though the taste was average, it brought it up to very nice. I'd surely come back and probably try something else, if not, then Thali is always a safe bet! read more

In what appears to be a former fast food restaurant, Chaat House is a casual restaurant turning out stainless steel platters of vegetarian Indian chaats and meals. The setting felt anachronistic with retro fast food furniture (booths, tables, chairs, and even trash bins), a counter for placing orders, and a pass looking into the semi-open kitchen, over which hung a long black sign with the word "Swagatam." My pick from the menu was the daily special thali, a round metal platter lined with six bowls containing the dishes of the day. The masoor dal was a spiced lentil soup; the kadhi was a distinctively sour yogurt soup; and the mix veg was a mixture of peas, carrots, potato, and cauliflower stir-fried with onions and spices. My favorite was the malai paneer, which came with chunks of paneer in a mildly spiced, slightly sweet orange-colored cream-based curry, and the thali also came with jeera (cumin) rice, thick curd, sliced red onions, a crunchy papad cracker, and two freshly made roti flatbreads! Every item on this thali was delicious, perfectly spiced, and made for a balanced meal. The curries and flatbreads were all served hot, and the thali even came with a drink selection. An old player when it comes to vegetarian North Indian food. They had a very homely mom and pop store vibe and old Hindi songs playing in the background. I wasn't that impressed by the food sadly. Portion sizes were also small. We got the following: 1. Malai kofta curry - the curry itself was nice but the kofta didn't really taste good. Also there were just two or three small koftas in this curry. 2. The pani puri/gol gappa/puchka - around 7 small puchkas served with imli water that was Really Good! I wish they had served more puchkas. Also came with black chana, onions and boiled potatoes. Pity that portion size was meager. Ive given them three stars just for that imli water. 3. Aalu tikki chaat with channa - could barely see the aalu tikki. It was mostly channa and onions. Seemed pretty sad tbh. Wont recommend. Other places serve bigger quantities for the price. Yesterday, I was at a popular Indian restaurant in San Francisco and wanted to hurl upon walking in. It's located in the TL with lots of homeless people sleeping at storefronts so it smelled like b( I )ty. When I went to the restroom, I saw curly pubes laying on the rusted toilet seat. Nope. I'm not even going to pop a squat on that thing. Despite the dirty atmosphere (which I never noticed before because I was inebriated), this particular restaurant always serves some good Northern Indian food. The best Asian food are from dingy dives, right? As I was waiting for my order at Chaat House (vegetarian north indian restaurant), I went to wash my hands and I was horrified at the state of the woman's restroom. It looked and smelled like it hasn't been cleaned since 1981 so I had high hopes that the chaat would be good. It's hard to find this in San Francisco so I always order this when I see it on the menu. The poori here were swimming in a pool of watery, bland chutneys and haphazardly slapped on with so much yogurt that it was a soggy mess. I got the mango lassi which always hits! It was a little tangy very creamy and nice and sweet! I got the Bharta(eggplant) paneer(cottage cheese) and OMG it was so good. It wasn't too oily which is how the dish usually is, and it was packet with flavor and onions! I got the garlic paratha to go with it and it was mind melding. Super fresh super big and very garlicky! The ambiance was also really nice and cute with lots of seating and space! The service was also immaculate as the employees were very kind even asking my opinion on the food. This place was okay until 4 years ago. First time I went there after the Pandemic and it seems the chef or cook has changed. My favorite used to be their Chana Bhatura but boy was that AWFUL today. Worse than a dhaba in Punjab! The chana masala was devoid of any taste other than chill cayenne. The zing in it had gone along with the former cook. The chaat that we ordered was more dahi than chat and too goddamn sweet! These guys need to close shop or hire another cook. I DREAM about the wonderful parathas served here at Chaat House. As soon as I ate here I knew my paratha expectations were going to go up. I got a dal makhani to go with it and both were delicious. This place is great for a quick lunch stop since the food comes out pretty quickly. What I love most is how authentic everything is. That "homemade" feeling is captured really well through the food. I recommend checking out the various dals/sabzis since all of them are good quality. Of course you must get a paratha - personally I enjoy the hara bhara - because I feel like Chaat House has really perfected them. Docked a star for ambience and general upkeep of the store since many areas aren't super clean and there's never any paper towels in the bathroom.
