Crispy dishes like pakoras were the same soft spongy texture as naan or tempeh. I really thought Techa served food, but they serve humiliation and discrimination on a platter. We were given small chaat-sized plates for the appetizers, and when the biryani arrived, we were told to keep eating off those same small plates -- we asked for proper plates and were initially told none were available, only to have larger plates suddenly appear once we pushed back. We asked more than twice for serving spoons for the biryani, and were eventually told we'd have to use eating spoons instead. Even then, we were given only one spoon for two full orders of biryani, and the second spoon came only after we asked again -- well after we'd already started eating. Napkins had to be requested separately too. The bigger issue was the food itself. We'd ordered one biryani spiced and one mild -- both came out bland, with no salt and no discernible spice, not once but across three separate attempts to fix it. This wasn't just our opinion; everyone at our table agreed. When I raised this at checkout, the response was dismissive -- I was essentially told I didn't understand how biryani is made, and that "only we" had a problem with it. A manager did come by, but rather than address the service failures, he explained there was a private event happening in another room, which seemed to be offered as the reason we were deprioritized. Tried Thecha recently after hearing good things, and overall it was just okay for me. The food was decent, but nothing really stood out or made me want to come back specifically for a dish. The flavors were fine, though I felt they could have been a bit more balanced and flavorful. We went for the Valentine's Day lunch buffet. They were overflowing, and had us sit in their banquet hall. Very polite service - they bring fresh roti, puri and paratha to your table. Indian buffets are very carbohydrate heavy - but I look for veggies and paneer to balance my meal. They had simple food and added a Hakka noodle plus some idli and sambar and pav bhaji, besides the entire food buffet. It was $22 for one person - for all you can eat, it's a very reasonable price. My favorite dishes - sabudana vada, peanut chutney, Srikhand, fried papad and sabudana papad and pickle. I am used to the thecha that is red colored and super spicy - they har a green chili one, but wasn't that spicy. The food is super simple - so if you're craving home cooked food, you should go. I tend to want to eat out for things I don't get at home, so I don't think I get cravings for this food. Will definitely take relatives that enjoy veggie simple food to this place. Underwhelming experience at Vishnuji ki Rasoi. The only real standout for me was the Kadhi--comforting and well done. The Besan ki Dal may be authentic, but it didn't work for my palate. Mix Veg Sabzi was very average and could be significantly better. The Misal didn't hit the spot at all, and most disappointing was the Masale Baat, especially given that it's their signature dish. Pooris were great, but the rotis weren't soft or homelike. The appetizers were boring - no chutneys were served, which made them feel even more incomplete. We visited during Sunday lunch and the restaurant was nearly empty, yet the service felt oddly disorganized. There didn't seem to be a clear process for the unlimited thali. While I appreciate the intention to reduce food waste and serve thoughtfully, generosity matters--especially when only a few items truly stand out. When we asked for Shrikand, we were literally served a spoonful. If something is good and requested again, please be more accommodating. Food-wise, it was a bit hit or miss, mostly because of one consistent issue: salt. Almost every dish felt under-seasoned, which held things back. Vada Pav: Pretty average, nothing standout and again needed more salt. Thecha Paneer: Interesting concept--the paneer itself isn't coated in thecha, but the thecha on the side was actually really good. Sabudana Khichdi: Tasted nice overall but needed more seasoning. Sinhagad Combo: Presentation was great and the yogurt was a nice touch. Pitla was good, but the bhakri was too thick and under-seasoned. Misal: Easily the highlight. Probably one of the better misals I've had in the Bay Area--even here, a bit more salt would have made it perfect. Chai: Pretty average. Overall, I like what they're trying to do and I genuinely want this place to succeed. It feels like a few tweaks (especially around seasoning and consistency) could make a big difference. I had a really disappointing experience at Thecha in Sunnyvale. I made a reservation and arrived on time, expecting at least basic organization. Instead, I was asked to wait for about 15 minutes... which then turned into an indefinite wait with no clear timeline or communication. What made it worse was that there were multiple groups in the same situation. Some people mentioned they had already been waiting 45 minutes to an hour just to be seated. Even guests who were already seated were still waiting over an hour for their food. The biggest issue here is poor management. If you're opening a new restaurant, it's understandable that things may not be perfect--but you need to have a clear system. Either honor reservations properly or run on a first-come, first-served basis. Right now, it feels like both systems are being mixed with no structure. Walk-ins were being added alongside reservations, and there was no priority given to people who had actually booked in advance. Overall, the experience was chaotic, frustrating, and poorly managed. We made a reservation through Resy/Google yesterday and went there on time by 7.15 pm and they didn't even honor the reservation and we had to wait with hungry toddlers for an hour to even get seated! Even after being seated the table wasn't cleaned for another 10 minutes and then for another 20 minutes no one even bothered to take an order! They are severely short staffed and operate with pure chaos and no order in getting people seated or taking orders or serving the food! When we went and checked multiple times to atleast take order as kids were super hungry waiting till 9pm they kept saying "1 min" and didn't even come back. When we finally showed frustration after waiting for almost 2 hours they didn't even apologize or acknowledge their mismanagement or show empathy but rather were rude and asked us to "relax" as if it were a pleasant experience for us to manage hungry cranky kids without getting realistic definitive updates or timelines. Overall it was a pathetic experience making a reservation and driving all the way there hoping for great food and dine in experience! If you are a large group with more than 6 people then don't even bother going anywhere near this restaurant and waste time! read more

Again, we were given the same "one minute" response multiple times (at least six), with no real acknowledgment of the delay or any sense of urgency. Eventually, the owner stepped in to take our order and mentioned that the kitchen was busy and food would take another 20 minutes. While the explanation was appreciated, it came far too late to salvage the experience. Overall, this was an extremely disappointing visit. I was here with my friend, who treated me to an amazing maharashtrian dining experience. Umesh, one of the owners of this restaurant was great right from the beginning when we entered the resturant. We were seated at the booth with menu and a special banarasi Mango lassi with cream. A banana leaf was placed and one by one dishes were served- papadam, Mango pickle, bhajiya, kothimbir vadi, sabudana vada, with thetcha, panchamrit which was so delicious we asked for a second round, matki usal, daal, roti, puri. Shrikhand, mixed vegetable curry, shaahi paneer, Mango rasmalai, banarasi pedha... everything was so delicious and home made dishes, was truly a time travel experience with an ambience that reminds you of the village from Maharashtra, the walls, the utensils, the wall pictures of Shivaji Maharaj and other dignitaries of India. We were so full but it was a worth every dish that we tried as it was all good and just like home cooked with great customer service. I will highly recommend you for this experience. read more

We order pitla bhakri and bhaji separately the guy at billing counter confused and guy a small portion of bhaji that usually accompanies pitla bhakri and didn't give proper quantity of bhaji. So they charged us for 2 items (~$20) - but gave very small quantity of bhaji and charging ($7-$8) for bhaji. On asking that last 2-3 times the quantity of bhaji was nearly double, thus we came but this time you reduced quantity significantly yet charging us same price- the guy at billing counter shrugged and said this is the only quantity they serve. Horrible service overall- I wonder why management is extremely poor- I have no words for that. No wonder the place is always empty and other horrible 1 star reviews for this place. read more

Decided to revisit VKR since they reopened, but left disappointed. Although we were informed at the beginning that the kitchen was backed up on orders, the delay was evident. There was only one person taking orders, serving, and cleaning tables; who was trying to memorize orders by repeating them instead of writing them down, and ended up failing. They forgot to communicate our Biryani order to the kitchen, and we had no choice but to cancel it because we had been waiting nearly 20 minutes after finishing our first course.
